NCAAF News: No. 4 TCU rallies for last-second win over Baylor

Behind an inspired effort from Max Duggan and a last-second field goal by Griffin Kell, No. 4 TCU kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive with a dramatic 29-28 comeback win Saturday against host Baylor in Waco, Texas.

Duggan passed for 327 yards and a touchdown and led the Horned Frogs (11-0, 8-0 Big 12) with 50 rushing yards and a score.

Kendre Miller and Emari Demercado also ran for touchdowns for TCU. Taye Barber caught five passes for 108 yards and Gunnar Henderson had a touchdown reception for the Frogs.

Craig Williams rushed 19 times for 112 yards for Baylor (6-5, 4-4), which finished with 232 yards on the ground. Blake Shapen passed for 269 yards and a touchdown.

Monaray Baldwin had six receptions for 123 yards for the Bears. Kelsey Johnson added rushing and receiving TDs.

Baylor kicked off the scoring when tailback Qualan Jones found paydirt from 10 yards out on the game’s opening drive. The 11-play scoring march was aided by a fourth-and-1 run by Dillon Doyle.

TCU tied the game on its second possession on a Duggan 7-yard touchdown run. A 39-yard pass from Duggan to Quentin Johnston, which put the Horned Frogs in Baylor territory following a missed field goal, sparked the scoring drive.

The Bears took a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter when Johnson scored on a 2-yard run. But TCU responded with a five-play, 90-yard drive, which was capped by Miller’s 2-yard touchdown scamper.

Baylor threatened to take the lead before halftime, but Shapen was intercepted by Bud Clark in the end zone, which kept the game gridlocked at 14.

The Horned Frogs took a 20-14 lead with less than six minutes to go in the third quarter when Duggan hooked up with Henderson for a 26-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good.

Johnson’s 12-yard touchdown grab and John Mayers’ extra point gave the Bears a 21-20 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Richard Reese’s 1-yard scoring plunge with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game put Baylor up 28-20. The score was set up by Baldwin’s 74-yard reception on third-and-11.

TCU cut the lead to 28-26 on Demercado’s 3-yard run with 2:07 to play, but the two-point conversion failed.

After a three-and-out by Baylor, Kell’s winning field goal capped a nine-play, 46-yard drive.

Mavs look forward to rematch vs. Jokic-less Nuggets

The Dallas Mavericks had so much fun playing the visiting Denver Nuggets on Friday night that they are happy to do it again on Sunday.

Dallas cruised to a 28-point win in the first of two games in three days with Denver, but it comes with a bit of an asterisk. The Nuggets played without three starters, including two-time MVP Nikola Jokic, and it showed against the Mavericks.

Luka Doncic notched his fourth triple-double of the season (33 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists) and the 50th of his career after sitting out a game for rest, and it looked easy for him and his teammates. Dallas led by as many as 31 against a short-handed Denver squad.

“It’s great. It feels amazing,” Doncic said. “It’s a pleasure. I’m just really glad that I’m here and doing this.”

It doesn’t look like the Nuggets will have Jokic back for the rematch. Coach Michael Malone said Friday night Jokic will remain in health and safety protocols for the third straight game, as will Jamal Murray, who missed Friday’s game.

In addition to Michael Porter Jr., the only other starter with a chance to play is Aaron Gordon, who has missed the past two games with a non-COVID illness.

“I’m going to go home and pray the rosary tonight that we can get some help,” Malone said after the loss.

Denver had no success in stopping Doncic and little in containing Christian Wood, who scored 28 points in the 127-99 win.

“I think he’s comfortable. I think that you can see that he’s comfortable playing his role,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said of Wood. “He’s doing a great job for us on both ends, offense and defense. Just understanding that we’re trying to get the ball offensively because he is a talent.

“The nice part about that is he’s really unselfish and he’s looking to make the right play — and he’s doing that for a high level for us right now, and we need that.”

The Nuggets need someone to step up if they’re going to flip the script Sunday night. Porter has struggled in the two games Jokic has missed, scoring a total of 15 points and shooting a combined 5-for-23 from the field.

The previous game, a win at Chicago last Sunday, Porter scored 31 points.

“I think it also speaks to the value and greatness of Nikola, how he gets guys so many easy looks because one, he attracts so much attention and he’s a great and willing passer,” Malone said. “While Nikola is not here, we have to find ways to try to get Michael some easy ones, and I think Michael’s got to help himself at the same time.

“We need Michael.”

Jokic, Gordon and Murray weren’t the only ones sidelined. Ish Smith has missed the last two games with a right calf strain, further depleting the bench. It did give Vlatko Cancar a chance for some minutes, and he logged 23 while scoring eight points.

Bones Hyland was the only reserve to score in double figures. He finished with 17 points on 5-of-16 shooting and was 3-for-11 from 3-point range.

NCAAF News: Late FG helps No. 3 Michigan beat Illinois to stay unbeaten

Jake Moody kicked a game-winning 35-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining as No. 3 Michigan stayed unbeaten and pulled off a narrow 19-17 victory over Illinois on Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Chase Brown’s 37-yard rushing touchdown with 1:37 left in the third quarter gave the Fighting Illini (7-4, 4-4 Big Ten) a 17-10 lead, but Moody made field goals of 41 and 33 yards in the fourth to pull the Wolverines (11-0, 8-0) within one.

Michigan’s defense prevented Illinois from manufacturing a first down on its second-to-last drive, and the Wolverines took over at their own 48. A defensive pass interference penalty put Michigan at the Illini 22, setting up Moody’s game-winner.

Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy completed 18 of 34 passes for 208 yards, and running back Blake Corum rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries despite being hampered by a second-quarter knee injury.

Brown finished with 140 yards and a pair of scores on 29 carries, while Tommy DeVito threw for 178 yards on 21-for-30 passing.

After the Illini went three-and-out to open the second half, the Wolverines drove to the Illinois 28 and extended their advantage to 10-3 thanks to Moody’s 46-yarder.

But the Fighting Illini leveled the score just 3:27 later when Brown wrapped up a nine-play, 67-yard drive with an 8-yard rushing score.

Caleb Griffin’s 29-yard field goal provided the Fighting Illini’s only points of the first half, pulling Illinois within 7-3 with 4:03 left to play before the break.

A 25-yard rush by Corum and a 22-yard completion to Ronnie Bell on Michigan’s ensuing possession helped the Wolverines drive down to the red zone, but Corum lost a fumble at the Illinois 13. Corum also sustained his injury on the play, exiting the game under his own power. He carried the ball just once following halftime.

Michigan wasted no time getting the offense going, driving 75 yards in seven plays on its first drive for a 7-0 lead. Corum capped the stand with a 2-yard rushing TD.

The Wolverines’ defense was suffocating through the first 15 minutes of action, holding Illinois to just 22 yards.

Heat, Cavaliers bring weary legs into matchup

Fresh off snapping a five-game losing skid, the Cleveland Cavaliers continue a four-game homestand on Sunday when they welcome the visiting Miami Heat.

Miami continues a four-game road trip with Sunday’s contest, coming in having dropped its first two decisions at Toronto and Washington.

Friday’s 107-106 overtime loss against the Wizards exposed the Heat’s struggles with depth. Just seven players dressed, six of whom logged more than 30 minutes.

As Friday’s contest wore on, the Miami offense sputtered with a pair of second-half quarters scoring fewer than 20 points, followed by only two points in overtime.

“I really wish I could have told something better to my locker room, because I’m really proud of that effort tonight.” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said in his postgame press conference.

Kyle Lowry recorded a triple-double with 24 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds, while Max Strus added 22 points — but shot just 3-of-14 from beyond the 3-point arc.

The last of Strus’ misses came out of a timeout on the game’s final possession.

“I disappeared in the second half and we had a lot of guys step up and play hard, give us great minutes,” Strus told the Sun-Sentinel. “We should have won the game. I’ll take that one and move on from it.”

Miami faces Cleveland still facing numerous roster questions. Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler, both of whom sat on Friday, are listed as day-to-day with knee injuries.

Butler leads the Heat at 20.9 points per game, while Adebayo is averaging 19.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Tyler Herro, averaging 19.6 points and 2.4 made 3-pointers a contest, missed the Washington game with an ankle injury.

Duncan Robinson, Dewayne Dedmon and Gabe Vincent are also all listed as day-to-day.

Cleveland, meanwhile, opened its four-game homestand on Friday with a 132-122, double-overtime defeat of Charlotte. The win was the Cavaliers’ first since Nov. 6 when they concluded an eight-game winning streak.

The Hornets very nearly extended Cleveland’s losing skid, rallying from a 16-point second-half deficit to force extra frames.

“We let our guard down,” Darius Garland said in his postgame press conference, following a 41-point performance. “We thought the game was over. We was up by like 12 and that’s when they started making shots. Bad communication from some of us with the switches and screens and stuff like that. We have to be better at the defensive end of just communicating.”

Garland’s 41 points came less than a week after he finished with 51 points in a Nov. 13 loss to Minnesota. The 51-point outpouring set the NBA’s single-game scoring-high — for about an hour, anyway. Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid scored 59 points the same night.

Donovan Mitchell added 34 points in the win on Friday. Mitchell is one of just five players in the league averaging north of 31 points per game with at least 11 games played.

While the backcourt duo paced the offense, Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised the total-team effort — particularly in the overtimes.

“Everybody who was on the floor made a play,” Bickerstaff said in his postgame press conference. “It was shots, it was stops, it was rebounds, assists. I just thought that there was a will and a determination.”

NCAAF News: Michigan star RB Blake Corum misses most of second half

Star running back Blake Corum sat for most of the second half with an apparent left knee injury Saturday as No. 3 Michigan rallied for a 19-17 win against visiting Illinois.

The Heisman Trophy contender headed to the locker room with trainers late in the second quarter, but returned to the field for one play in the third quarter.

With 1:38 left in the first half, the crowd at Michigan Stadium held its collective breath when Corum appeared to be favoring his knee after being tackled after a 4-yard gain. He fumbled on the play and the Illini recovered.

Initial reports out of Ann Arbor, Mich., characterized Corum’s injury as a bruise.

Corum finished with 108 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and added two catches for 39 yards.

For the season, he has rushed for 1,457 yards and 18 touchdowns in 11 games for the unbeaten Wolverines (11-0), who defeated Illinois (7-4) with Jake Moody’s late 35-yard field goal.

Cavaliers F Kevin Love (thumb) is day-to-day

The Cleveland Cavaliers say forward Kevin Love is day-to-day with a hairline fracture of his right thumb.

The team announced Saturday that Love is doubtful for Sunday’s contest against the visiting Miami Heat.

He got hurt in the third quarter of Friday night’s 133-122 double-overtime home win over the Charlotte Hornets.

Love, 34, is averaging 11.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 15 games (one start) in his 15th NBA season.

The five-time All-Star has career clips of 17.5 points, 10.6 boards and 2.4 assists in 827 games (660 starts) with the Minnesota Timberwolves (2008-14) and Cavaliers.

NCAAF News: Navy’s potent rushing attack sinks No. 20 UCF

Daba Fofana ran 20 times for 114 rushing yards and John Marshall set a single-game program record with four sacks as Navy upset No. 20 UCF 17-14 on Saturday in Orlando, Fla.

The Midshipmen (4-7, 3-4 American Athletic Conference) defeated UCF for the second straight season. Fofana fronted a Navy rushing attack that wound up with 248 yards on 63 carries.

UCF (8-3, 5-2) entered Saturday as the highest-ranked Group of Five team in the College Football Playoff rankings. But Navy’s defense kept the Knights at bay and put a dent in their chances of reaching the AAC championship game.

Starting quarterback John Rhys Plumlee was ineffective in the first half and UCF replaced him at halftime with Mikey Keene looking to spark a comeback. Keene finished with 123 yards and a touchdown on 8-for-15 passing. Javon Baker caught six passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Navy was a perfect 4-for-4 on fourth-down conversions, including one on its final drive that chewed up the final 5:54 of game clock to secure the win.

Set up by a 46-yard dash by Fofana on the opening drive, quarterback Xavier Arline — who threw one pass the entire game — powered in for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal from inside the 1.

UCF reached the red zone on its second and third drives, but Navy stuffed the Knights and forced them to settle for 21- and 31-yard field goals by Colton Boomer.

After the second field goal cut it to 7-6, the Midshipmen responded with a 13-play, 84-yard drive that ate up 6:47 of clock. Vincent Terrell II ran around the left end for an 8-yard touchdown with 1:33 before halftime. Terrell finished with 41 yards on eight carries.

Plumlee was intercepted by Mbiti Williams Jr. on a Hail Mary bomb short of the end zone on the last play of the half, keeping it 14-6 Navy.

Keene came on to open the second half and guided the Knights 75 yards in five plays, tossing a 28-yard touchdown to Baker just 1:35 into the third quarter. Plumlee came in for the two-point conversion and connected with Baker to tie the game.

But on UCF’s next possession, Marshall strip-sacked Keene and Colin Ramos recovered for Navy at UCF’s 34-yard line. Four plays later, the Midshipmen went back ahead on a 45-yard field goal by Bijan Nichols.

Keene led another Knights drive in the fourth quarter, but on fourth-and-4 at Navy’s 43, his pass was broken up as Williams nearly grabbed his second pick of the game.

Nets’ Kyrie Irving likely back, but Grizzlies’ Ja Morant out

Kyrie Irving’s last appearance with the Brooklyn Nets occurred on Nov. 1 as controversy swirled around the team.

His next appearance is likely Sunday night when the Nets return home from a four-game road trip to face the Memphis Grizzlies, who will be without star Ja Morant.

Irving is expected to return after sitting out Brooklyn’s past eight games. His last game was a four-point performance when the Nets folded in the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bulls in Jacque Vaughn’s head coaching debut after taking over from Steve Nash.

“It’s exciting for everybody. I mean we miss Ky. We miss his presence on the floor,” Brooklyn star Kevin Durant said. “I haven’t talked to him since we’ve been on the road trip about it, the last couple of days. But we’re looking forward to his return to the team. Definitely going to give us a much needed spark.”

Irving was the focal point of controversy for posting a link to an anti-Semitic film on Oct. 27, and was handed at least a five-game suspension when he did not apologize following a contentious media session at practice on Nov. 3.

When the Nets suspended him, they stipulated Irving must complete several steps, including meeting with commissioner Adam Silver. They met last week, and Silver said he did not think Irving held anti-Semitic beliefs.

Since Irving’s last appearance, the Nets are 5-3 and — even with allowing 153 points Tuesday at Sacramento — they are defending better recently.

Through Nov. 1, the Nets were allowing 118.8 points, 47.0 percent shooting and 41.2 percent from 3-point range. Since then, Brooklyn is allowing 104 points, 42.3 percent shooting and 35.8 percent from behind the arc.

Brooklyn returns after splitting a four-game West Coast trip. The Nets ended the trek by rallying from an 11-point deficit when Royce O’Neale capped his first career triple-double by tipping in the miss of a Durant jumper with seven-tenths of a second remaining in a 109-107 win Thursday.

Durant scored 35 points and has scored at least 25 in each game. He is the first player with such a streak since Michael Jordan did it in 16 straight to start 1988-89. The last player to achieve the feat in 17 straight was Rick Barry for the first 25 games of the 1966-67 season for the San Francisco Warriors.

Memphis snapped its second losing streak of the season by earning a 121-110 win over the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday when Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 25 in his second game back from right foot surgery.

Morant scored 19 before exiting late in the fourth quarter with a tweaked ankle. The star guard was diagnosed Saturday with a Grade 1 left ankle sprain and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

Tyus Jones will likely get the start as the Grizzlies have yet to play a game with their expected starting five of Morant, Desmond Bane, Dillon Brooks, Jackson and center Steven Adams.

“It is frustrating, but it’s part of the game,” Brooks said. “Been through it. We still got guys ready to play, ready to be active, ready to have their shot. It’s a tough one, but at the same time, though, next man up.”

Grizzlies star Ja Morant week-to-week with ankle sprain

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant was diagnosed with a Grade 1 left ankle sprain Saturday and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

Morant left Friday night’s victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder with an ankle injury after posting 19 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds in 32 minutes.

A first-time All-Star last season, Morant is averaging 28.6 points, 7.1 assists and 6.2 rebounds this season.

Morant, 23, has career averages of 21.7 points, 7.1 assists and 4.6 rebounds in 201 games. He is in his fourth NBA season.

The injury comes at a time in which Memphis is also without standout shooting guard Desmond Bane due to a sprained right big toe. Bane, averaging 24.7 points, is slated to be re-evaluated in two to three weeks.

NFL News: Bills escape snowy Buffalo, arrive in Detroit to face Browns

The Buffalo Bills made it out of wintry conditions that included more than 6 feet of snow and arrived in Detroit on Saturday night.

The Bills will play the Cleveland Browns on Sunday in the Motor City after the contest was moved from Orchard Park, N.Y., on Thursday due to the heavy snow.

The Bills said there were 77 inches of snow at their complex in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park.

Players, coaches and staffers received help from police and helpful neighbors to make it to the team facility in Orchard Park. Some people shoveled, others provided snowblowing and many helped with transportation.

Buffalo tight end Dawson Knox displayed a video on Twitter where his neighbors were helping dig him out.

“The city of good neighbors,” Knox began. “Getting to the plane. Wow. Let’s go. Never seen anything like it.”

The Bills received police escorts to make it to the airport and reportedly departed Buffalo around 4:45 p.m. ET for the flight to Detroit.

Conditions were so bad Friday that the team canceled practice and met on a virtual basis.

The Bills visit the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, but they aren’t staying in the area. They plan to return to Buffalo on Sunday night and fly back to Detroit on Wednesday.
