NCAAF News: Texas A&M beats UMass to snap six-game slide

Freshman Conner Weigman passed for 191 yards and a touchdown as Texas A&M defeated UMass 20-3 and snapped a six-game losing streak on Saturday in College Station, Texas.

Weigman found Noah Thomas for 22-yard TD reception in the second quarter in his third career start for the Aggies (4-7), who had not won since Sept. 24.

Le’Veon Moss rushed for 72 yards with a 12-yard score — his first career touchdown — with 5:10 left in regulation and Randy Bond kicked a pair of field goals to round out the Texas A&M scoring.

Moose Muhammad made three catches for 75 yards after being suspended last week. Weigman completed 11 of 19 passes and also rushed for 66 yards.

Brady Olson was 9-of-22 passing for 55 yards, Isaac Ross caught four passes for 25 yards, and Kay’Ron Adams rushed for 58 yards for UMass (1-10).

While the Aggies had a 398-168 advantage in total yardage, the Minutemen recovered three fumbles, sacked Weigman three times and broke up four passes. Jalen Mackie had eight tackles and a sack for UMass.

UMass stopped the run early on the opening series, but a pair of 20-plus-yard Weigman tosses allowed Texas A&M to score first on Bond’s 27-yard field goal.

Cameron Carson kicked a tying 25-yard field goal for UMass early in the second, capping a 13-play, 72-yard drive.

Texas A&M began the second quarter with a fumble and a three-and-out. UMass also went three-and-out twice before Weigman’s 22-yard scramble set up the Thomas score to put the Aggies up 10-3.

Making up for a 47-yard miss at the end of the first half, Bond drilled a 35-yard field goal to make it a two-score game with 7:49 left in the third.

Bond’s 45-yard kick with 12:38 left was no good, ending the first drive of the final quarter. The Moss touchdown run came four plays after the Minutemen failed to convert a pass on fourth-and-7.

NCAAF News: Will Rogers lifts Mississippi State in rout of East Tennessee State

Will Rogers tossed five touchdown passes as Mississippi State wrapped up its home schedule by walloping East Tennessee State 56-7 on Saturday afternoon in Starkville, Miss.

Rogers, who completed 30 of 37 passes for 301 yards, has 32 touchdowns on the season. The outing marked Rogers’ 29th occurrence of passing for at least 200 yards, tying Dak Prescott (2012-15) for the school record.

In relief, Chance Lovertich completed all six pass attempts for 36 yards with his team’s final score, a short pass to J.J. Jernighan.

The Bulldogs (7-4) concluded their 2022 home slate with a 6-1 mark — the only loss being last Saturday’s 45-19 debacle against top-ranked Georgia. It marked the first time they were victorious six times at home in a season since 2018.

East Tennessee State (3-8), an FCS program, broke up the shutout bid in the fourth quarter when Ja’Varius Harrison’s punt block was returned 39 yards by Erek Campbell.

Tyler Riddell completed 5 of 11 passes for 47 yards with two interceptions as the Buccaneers’ offense produced just 154 yards.

The Buccaneers looked to repeat 2021’s season-opening upset at Vanderbilt when they took down the Commodores 23-3 in Nashville. But they had no such luck Saturday while climbing the Southeastern Conference’s power ranks.

Rogers threw a pair of scoring strikes inside the game’s first 10 minutes, finding Lideatrick Griffin from 12 yards and Rara Thomas from 8 yards for a 14-0 lead. The second drive was set up by safety Jalen Green’s second interception this season.

In the second quarter, Rogers pitched a second short score to Griffin on a jet sweep at 12:51. A deflected interception and broken-field sprint by cornerback Emmanuel Forbes resulted in the junior’s 76-yard return.

Jo’quavious Marks’ 22-yard run made it 35-0. Earlier, the running back extended his streak to 34 games with a reception, one short of the school record set by Fred Ross from 2013-16.

After safety Jackie Matthews grabbed the Bulldogs’ third pick on the second half’s first series, Austin Williams caught Rogers’ fourth passing score, a 5-yard catch-and-run. Justin Robinson snared another touchdown toss by Rogers for a 49-0 lead.

Anthony Edwards saves Wolves in win over Sixers

Anthony Edwards scored a team-high 25 points, but his most important play of the night came when he disrupted a potential, lead-changing fastbreak attempt to preserve the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 112-109 win over the host Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

It was the Wolves’ third consecutive road victory.

Minnesota led by as many as 20 points in the final game of its four-game road swing but surrendered a 19-5 run over the last eight-plus minutes of regulation.

De’Anthony Melton pulled Philadelphia to within a 110-109 margin, connecting on three of his 19 points with 29.1 seconds remaining.

Melton then stole the ball from Edwards on the ensuing Timberwolves possession and raced down the court for a layup. Edwards was right on top of the attempt, however, and Karl-Anthony Towns grabbed his eighth and final rebound. Edwards put the game away with a pair of free throws.

Minnesota surged ahead with a big start to the second quarter before Philadelphia whittled the gap to 12 points before halftime.

The 76ers — down three starters with Tyrese Maxey joining James Harden and Tobias Harris on the bench — struggled to get the deficit back to single digits until the closing stretch.

Joel Embiid fueled the comeback with a game-high 32 points, team-high nine rebounds and six assists. Melton shot 5 of 9 from 3-point range and Shake Milton finished with 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting.

The final miss was a backbreaker for the 76ers, however, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Georges Niang added 15 points for Philadelphia, though he shot just 1 of 7 from 3-point range.

Minnesota got 19 points and seven assists from D’Angelo Russell, and Jaylen Nowell’s 13 points led the Timberwolves to a 37-20 advantage in bench points. Naz Reid and Taurean Prince added nine points each in reserve duty.

NCAAF News: Pitt takes advantage of Duke miscues, missed chances in win

Pitt feasted on a pair of costly Duke turnovers and running back Israel Abanikanda had another strong game as the host Panthers prevailed 28-26 by stopping a two-point conversion in the final minute Saturday afternoon.

Duke was in Pitt territory with less than four minutes remaining, but couldn’t convert on third- and fourth-and-5 plays. Then the Blue Devils took over at the Pittsburgh 22 after the Panthers botched a punt play, scoring on a fourth-and-18 play on Riley Leonard’s 19-yard pass to Jaylen Coleman with 47 seconds left. It was followed by the second failed conversion in the final 10 minutes for Duke (7-4, 4-3).

Pitt scored its first touchdown on a 6-year run by Abanikanda and its final one on a defensive score on Brandon Hill’s return of a fumble in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers (7-4, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) held on to win the matchup that might determine second place in the ACC’s Coastal Division.

Duke quarterback Riley Leonard threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. He was 24-for-45 for 290 yards, but Duke’s rushing attack was limited to 63 yards.

Quarterback Kedon Slovis of Pitt was 15-for-32 for 190 yards with a touchdown throw and two interceptions. Ben Sauls kicked field goals of 47 and 51 yards in the first half for the Panthers.

Abanikanda rushed for 113 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown and two-point conversion run.

Pitt’s first touchdown came one play after a punt hit Duke return man Jalon Calhoun and the Panthers had the ball at the Duke 6-yard line. Abanikanda ran for the score.

The Panthers went ahead 10 seconds before halftime when Slovis connected with Jared Wayne on a 15-yard play.

The score remained 20-14 through a scoreless third quarter before Hill’s touchdown while on defense and Abanikanda’s two-point conversion run. Down 28-14, Duke was quick to respond, with Leonard’s 49-yard pass play to Jordan Moore.

Duke’s first touchdown was set up by a blocked punt and came on Leonard’s 28-yard hookup with Calhoun in the first quarter. The Blue Devils were up 14-13 on Leonard’s 1-yard run with 3:01 left in the first half.

Pacers rally past Magic for fourth straight win

Aaron Nesmith scored a career-high 19 points, including two foul shots with 9.6 seconds left, and the Indiana Pacers extended their winning streak to four games with a 114-113 victory over the Orlando Magic on Saturday in Indianapolis.

Tyrese Haliburton had 22 points and 14 assists for Indiana, while Myles Turner contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds. Buddy Hield scored 15 points on five 3-pointers and Jalen Smith added 14 points for the surprising Pacers, who have won eight of their last 10 games.

Franz Wagner led Orlando with 29 points, while Bol Bol had 22 points and 11 rebounds. Mo Bamba added 21 points and nine rebounds, R.J. Hampton had 14 points and Jalen Suggs tallied 12 points and eight assists.

Orlando took a 113-109 lead with 1:43 remaining when Wagner made one of his five 3-pointers.

Nesmith answered with a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game, and the third-year forward provided the final points when he went to the foul line with 9.6 seconds left.

The Pacers escaped with the victory after Wagner missed a shot near the basket with 5.1 seconds left. Bamba got the rebound, but his tip-in attempt fell short.

Indiana started slow for the second straight night and trailed by as many as 11 in the first quarter. The Pacers trailed 28-22 after Bennedict Mathurin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Mathurin finished with 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting.

Orlando’s size continued to cause problems for Indiana in the second quarter. Bamba had 13 points in the first half for the Magic, who took a 55-51 lead into the break after Haliburton made a half-court shot at the buzzer.

The Pacers took their first lead of the game at 79-77 when Smith scored with 3:39 left in the third quarter. Indiana ended the third quarter with an 89-84 advantage after shooting 15 of 22 (68.2 percent) for the period.

Orlando played without forward Paolo Banchero, who missed his sixth straight game with a sprained left ankle.

NCAAF News: No. 19 Florida State keeps rolling, crushes Louisiana

Jordan Travis and Treshaun Ward each rushed for two touchdowns as No. 19 Florida State routed Louisiana 49-17 in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Seminoles (8-3, 5-3 ACC) took a 21-0 first-quarter lead and rolled to their fourth consecutive victory. They have outscored their last four opponents 173-39.

Chandler Fields threw a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown for the Ragin’ Cajuns (5-6, 3-4 Sun Belt), who need to win at Texas State in their regular-season finale next Saturday to become bowl eligible.

Trey Benson’s 2-yard touchdown run on FSU’s first possession of the third quarter increased the lead to 42-3. Benson finished with 80 rushing yards, snapping his three-game stretch of reaching 100 yards on the ground.

On the first play of the ensuing possession, the Seminoles recovered a fumble at the Louisiana 18. Three plays later, A.J. Duffy threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Markeston Douglas for a 49-3 lead that remained at the end of the third.

On fourth and goal from the 5, Fields connected with Michael Jefferson for the first touchdown against FSU in three games. Fields added a 5-yard scoring run.

On the first possession of the game, the Seminoles drove 75 yards, the last 36 of which came on Ward’s touchdown run.

After the Cajuns went three and out, FSU drove 65 yards and Travis ran 3 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Travis’ 13-yard touchdown run pushed the lead to 21-0 near the end of the first quarter.

Ward added a 1-yard run to extend the lead to 28-0 midway through the second quarter.

The Seminoles scored their first touchdown through the air when Travis connected with Malik McClain on a 9-yard scoring pass for a 35-0 lead.

Louisiana drove to a first-and-goal at the FSU 2 but settled for Kenneth Almendares’ 24-yard field goal as time expired, reducing the lead to 35-3 at halftime.

Rockets figure to present Warriors chance to overcome road woes

There was little out of the ordinary in the Warriors’ 111-101 home victory over the New York Knicks on Friday.

It was a win that featured six Warriors scoring in double figures paced by Stephen Curry, who paired a team-high 24 points with 10 assists and now ranks third in the NBA in scoring.

Draymond Green added 10 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two blocks. Klay Thompson scored 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting for the Warriors, who claimed their sixth consecutive win at Chase Center by springing to an 18-point lead behind their veteran starting unit.

What continues to bedevil the Warriors is their effort on the road, where they are winless in eight games. Golden State will be in Houston on Sunday to face the Rockets seeking their first road win.

The reigning champions have yet to muster the same consistency away from home. It’s been a bizarre set of circumstances for a team with such a strong veteran presence and one accustomed to dizzying levels of success. The victory over the Knicks provided another snapshot of how the Warriors perform when they are at their best.

“A lot of room to grow,” said Curry, who shot 5 of 13 from behind the arc and posted his league-leading eighth game with at least five 3-pointers made. “We’re nowhere near where we want to be. Still under .500, still struggling to put a sequence of games together so no panic. Just attention to detail and understanding we have what it takes, we’ve just got to get it done.”

The Rockets would appear to be a likely candidate to hand deliver the Warriors their first road triumph. Houston coughed up a 20-point first-half lead in falling to the Indiana Pacers 99-91 at home on Friday, leaving the Rockets with only one victory at Toyota Center this season.

Houston continues to struggle to cobble together complete performances. For a second consecutive game, the Rockets held an opponent below 100 points, even limiting the Pacers to just 10 points in the opening period. However, the Rockets labored initiating their offense without guard Kevin Porter Jr., who was sidelined by lower left back soreness. While Porter has committed an NBA-high 60 turnovers, he leads the Rockets averaging 5.8 assists per game.

“Not having KPJ makes a difference,” Rockets coach Stephen Silas said. “He’s a good player.

“When we don’t have our starting point guard it’s hard to have guys out there who can get us into a bunch of stuff. … Our game is based on having multiple ballhandlers on the floor, and there were times when we didn’t.”

Porter is listed as doubtful for Sunday.

Without Porter, the Rockets recorded more turnovers (17) than assists (15) against the Pacers. Their primary ballhandlers in his absence combined for 10 turnovers, with second-year guard Jalen Green responsible for six while Eric Gordon and Daishen Nix posted two apiece.

The Rockets rank 28th in assists per game (21.3) and 26th in assist percentage (55.8) with or without Porter.

NCAAF News: No. 8 Alabama cruises to 34-0 shutout over Austin Peay

With their backfield short-handed, Jase McClellan ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns to lead the host Alabama Crimson Tide to a 34-0 victory over Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Crimson Tide (9-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference), ranked No. 8 in the latest College Football Playoff standings, took care of business a week before their annual Iron Bowl matchup with rival Auburn as they hope to sneak into the playoffs if they can get some help over the final two weeks.

Austin Peay (7-4, 3-2 Atlantic Sun Conference) will now wait to see if it can earn a spot in the upcoming Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Quarterback Mike DiLiello completed 20 of 32 passes for 147 yards, but was intercepted twice — first by Kool-Aid McKinstry and later by Brian Branch.

Drae McCray caught 12 passes for 92 yards to lead the Governors’ offense.

Alabama’s offense was without starting running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who sat out with an ankle injury.

It didn’t keep them from a strong start, as quarterback Bryce Young directed the Tide on a 13-play, 92-yard drive to open the game, which was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by McClellan.

The Crimson Tide sputtered a bit after that both on offense and special teams for part of the first half.

Alabama muffed a punt when the ball hit Kendrick Law on the helmet, allowing the Governors to recover at the Crimson Tide 36. But Alabama’s defense stopped Austin Peay on downs inside the 5.

The Governors failed to capitalize on a Tide turnover on their ensuing possession after kicker Maddux Trujillo missed wide left on a 25-yard field goal.

Alabama began to break it open at that point as Young connected with Jermaine Burton for a 4-yard touchdown pass.

Young completed 18 of 24 passes for 221 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. His second scoring toss also went to Burton from 10 yards out with 13:20 left in the fourth quarter. Burton caught all seven of his targets for 128 yards.

AJ Griffin gets game-winning bucket as Hawks edge Raptors

Rookie AJ Griffin caught a pass from Trae Young and made an uncontested shot at the buzzer to give the Atlanta Hawks a 124-122 overtime win against the visiting Toronto Raptors on Saturday.

Toronto’s O.G. Anunoby made two free throws to tie the game at 122-122 with 3.8 seconds left. Atlanta, with no timeouts, advanced the ball to Young, who lobbed a high pass toward the rim. Griffin caught the ball in midair near the basket and dropped it in as the horn sounded.

Griffin scored 17 points, eight in overtime, with five rebounds, one of which was a key offensive board in the extra period. Young scored 33 points on 12-for-21 shooting with 12 assists.

The two teams have split two games and play for the final time on Jan. 14 in Toronto.

Atlanta also got 22 points from De’Andre Hunter, 18 points and 14 rebounds from Clint Capela and 17 points from Dejounte Murray.

Toronto’s Scottie Barnes scored a season-high 28 points. He also matched his season high with 11 rebounds. Anunoby scored 27 points, Thaddeus Young scored 18 and reserve Malachi Flynn added 17.

Toronto led by as many as nine in the second half and had a chance to win it in regulation, but Barnes missed a shot close to the rim and failed to tip in the follow and the game was tied 111-111 at the end of regulation.

The Raptors had only nine players available because of injuries to Otto Porter Jr. (dislocated toe), Gary Trent Jr. (flu), Precious Achiuwa (right ankle sprain) and Pascal Siakam (right adductor strain).

Atlanta has scored at least 100 points in each of its first 16 games for just the fourth time in franchise history, and in 37 straight, the longest active streak in the NBA.

The game was tied 55-55 with 1:23 remaining in the first half, but the Raptors scored the final seven points and led 62-55 at halftime.

The Hawks are now 2-0 in overtime. Toronto is now 0-1.

NCAAF News: No. 4 TCU rallies for last-second win over Baylor

Behind an inspired effort from Max Duggan and a last-second field goal by Griffin Kell, No. 4 TCU kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive with a dramatic 29-28 comeback win Saturday against host Baylor in Waco, Texas.

Duggan passed for 327 yards and a touchdown and led the Horned Frogs (11-0, 8-0 Big 12) with 50 rushing yards and a score.

Kendre Miller and Emari Demercado also ran for touchdowns for TCU. Taye Barber caught five passes for 108 yards and Gunnar Henderson had a touchdown reception for the Frogs.

Craig Williams rushed 19 times for 112 yards for Baylor (6-5, 4-4), which finished with 232 yards on the ground. Blake Shapen passed for 269 yards and a touchdown.

Monaray Baldwin had six receptions for 123 yards for the Bears. Kelsey Johnson added rushing and receiving TDs.

Baylor kicked off the scoring when tailback Qualan Jones found paydirt from 10 yards out on the game’s opening drive. The 11-play scoring march was aided by a fourth-and-1 run by Dillon Doyle.

TCU tied the game on its second possession on a Duggan 7-yard touchdown run. A 39-yard pass from Duggan to Quentin Johnston, which put the Horned Frogs in Baylor territory following a missed field goal, sparked the scoring drive.

The Bears took a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter when Johnson scored on a 2-yard run. But TCU responded with a five-play, 90-yard drive, which was capped by Miller’s 2-yard touchdown scamper.

Baylor threatened to take the lead before halftime, but Shapen was intercepted by Bud Clark in the end zone, which kept the game gridlocked at 14.

The Horned Frogs took a 20-14 lead with less than six minutes to go in the third quarter when Duggan hooked up with Henderson for a 26-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good.

Johnson’s 12-yard touchdown grab and John Mayers’ extra point gave the Bears a 21-20 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Richard Reese’s 1-yard scoring plunge with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game put Baylor up 28-20. The score was set up by Baldwin’s 74-yard reception on third-and-11.

TCU cut the lead to 28-26 on Demercado’s 3-yard run with 2:07 to play, but the two-point conversion failed.

After a three-and-out by Baylor, Kell’s winning field goal capped a nine-play, 46-yard drive.
