NFL News: 49ers signing RB Jeff Wilson Jr. to bolster backfield

The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly bringing back a familiar face to an injury-depleted backfield.

Jeff Wilson Jr., who spent the first four-plus years of his NFL career in San Francisco before spending the past three seasons in Miami, will re-sign with the 49ers after working out for the team on July 30.

The 2018 undrafted free agent out of North Texas rushed for 1,733 yards and 15 touchdowns with San Francisco, which traded the running back to Miami midway through the 2022 season.

Wilson ran for just 637 yards and three scores in Miami, appearing in only 19 games over the past two years.

The 29-year-old adds some depth for the 49ers, who have seen several running backs succumb to injuries recently.

Ameer Abdullah, who worked out with Wilson on July 30 and signed with the team, exited Saturday’s preseason opener against Denver with a rib injury. Isaac Guerendo (shoulder) and Jordan James (broken finger) also have been sidelined.

That left San Francisco with only Christian McCaffrey, Corey Kiner, Patrick Taylor Jr. and recently signed Ke’Shawn Vaughn as healthy options in the backfield.

Fever sign G Odyssey Sims to hardship contract

The Indiana Fever signed veteran guard Odyssey Sims to a hardship contract on Sunday.

Indiana sought leave approval after losing guards Aari McDonald (right foot) and Sydney Colson (left ACL) for the season during Thursday’s 95-60 loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Both players had to miss a game — which they did Saturday — before the Fever qualified to sign a replacement.

In addition, another guard, star Caitlin Clark (right groin), has missed 10 consecutive games.

The Fever had just nine available players — and no point guards — while beating the Chicago Sky 92-70 on Saturday.

Sims, 33, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 draft by the then-Tulsa Shock and has averaged 11.2 points, 3.8 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 304 games (208) starts over 11-plus seasons.

She was with the Los Angeles Sparks at the outset of this season and averaged 9.8 points and 3.5 assists in 12 games (11 starts) before being released in early July.

She was an All-Star in 2019 when she averaged 14.5 points and 5.4 assists in 34 games for the Minnesota Lynx.

Sims played two seasons for the Shock before the franchise moved to Dallas for the 2016 season. She again played for Dallas in 2023-24.

Sims also spent time with the Sparks (2017-18, 2024-25), Minnesota (2019-20, 2022), Atlanta (2021) and Connecticut (2022).

The Fever (18-14) host the Dallas Wings on Tuesday.

NFL News: Titans RB Tyjae Spears nursing high-ankle sprain

Tennessee Titans running back Tyjae Spears is expected to miss a few weeks with a high-ankle sprain, head coach Brian Callahan told reporters Sunday.

Spears sustained the injury during Saturday’s 29-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a preseason game.

He had three carries for minus-1 yard on Saturday for the Titans, who likely will rely on fellow running backs Julius Chestnut and Kalel Mullings to provide support for starter Tony Pollard.

Spears, 24, rushed for 312 yards and four touchdowns and added 30 catches for 224 yards and one score in 12 games (one start) last season for Tennessee.

He has rushed for 765 yards and six touchdowns in 29 career games (two starts) since being selected by the Titans in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Tulane.

MLS News: Danny Musovski, Sounders dominate Galaxy

0

Danny Musovski tallied twice as the Seattle Sounders cruised to a 4-0 victory against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday night in Carson, Calif.

The Sounders (11-6-8, 41 points) extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches in MLS play (4-0-3) since competing in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Thomas, filling in for the injured Stefan Frei (concussion), made three saves in posting the shutout.

The Sounders opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Pedro de la Vega sent a cross from the left wing to the far post. A hard-charging Paul Rothrock got a foot on the ball before it glanced off falling Galaxy defender Julian Aude and into the net.

Seattle doubled its advantage in the 37th minute. Rothrock played a low through ball to Musovski in the penalty area. Los Angeles goalkeeper Novak Micovic made a diving save on Musovski’s original 12-yard shot, but the forward pounced on the rebound and poked it into the net from the top of the 6-yard box.

The Galaxy (3-15-7, 16 points), who failed to put a shot on net in the first half, had two chances in the opening five minutes of the second, but Thomas made a diving stop against Matheus Nascimento and a routine save versus Gabriel Pec.

The Sounders essentially put the match away in the 54th minute. Cristian Roldan played a pass to de la Vega at the top left of the penalty area and he re-routed the ball to Jesus Ferreira for a 12-yard shot that Micovic stopped with a diving save. Musovski was alone at the top of the 6-yard box to tap the rebound into a gaping net.

Snyder Brunell, an 18-year-old making his MLS debut, scored in the 85th minute on an 8-yard shot off a cross from Alex Roldan.

The Sounders were without their leading scorer, midfielder Albert Rusnak (10 goals, seven assists in MLS play), because of a hamstring injury suffered Wednesday in a Leagues Cup match against Club Tijuana.

Third-quarter spree lifts Lynx past Liberty in WNBA Finals rematch

Kayla McBride scored a game-high 18 points as the Minnesota Lynx won their fifth straight game, defeating the host New York Liberty 83-71 on Sunday afternoon.

The Lynx, who own the WNBA’s best record at 27-5, used a 14-0 third-quarter run to take control.

Alanna Smith approached a triple-double for Minnesota with eight points, a game-high nine rebounds and seven assists.

Courtney Williams added 14 points and seven assists for the Lynx. But the Lynx took off in the third quarter when Williams had foul trouble and was replaced by fellow point guard DiJonai Carrington, who finished with 15 points.

New York, which beat Minnesota in last year’s WNBA Finals, had its three-game win streak snapped.

The Liberty committed 20 turnovers compared to 11 for Minnesota. In addition, New York shot just 42.4 percent while the Lynx shot 48.6 percent overall and 10 of 21 (47.6 percent) on 3-point attempts.

New York got 14 points from Natasha Cloud, 11 each from Jonquel Jones and Emma Meesseman and 10 points from Sabrina Ionescu. The Liberty also got help from reserves Marine Johannes (10 points) and Isabelle Harrison (nine).

Minnesota’s Napheesa Collier, the Las Vegas betting favorite to win league MVP honors and the WNBA’s leading scorer at 23.5 points per game, missed her fourth straight game due to a sprained right ankle.

New York, meanwhile, continues to play without three key players: seven-time All-Star Breanna Stewart (bone bruise on her right knee), Kennedy Burke (calf) and Nyara Sabally (knee). Due to those injuries, the Liberty have used a franchise-record 12 starting lineups this year.

Williams was brilliant early with eight points and five assists to help Minnesota take a 25-24 lead after a first quarter that featured nine lead changes and six ties.

New York claimed a 38-36 halftime lead after a low-scoring second quarter. New York shot just 40.5 percent from the floor in the first half, including 3-of-11 on 3-pointers. Minnesota shot 45.5 percent, including 3-of-9 from deep, and the Lynx also struggled from the foul line (3 of 6).

In the third quarter, Minnesota increased its defensive pressure to trigger its 14-0 run. The Liberty committed four turnovers in a 1-minute, 32-second stretch to help the Lynx transform a 54-50 deficit into a 64-54 lead. By the end of the third, the Lynx led 66-57 and their lead only widened from there.

MLS News: Luis Muriel, Orlando City overwhelm Inter Miami again

0

Luis Muriel scored twice and had an assist and Martin Ojeda had a goal and an assist as host Orlando City SC routed Inter Miami 4-1 on Sunday night.

Orlando City (12-6-8, 44 points) swept the Florida Derby season series with a pair of three-goal victories and leapfrogged Inter Miami (12-5-6, 42 points) in the Eastern Conference standings.

Orlando City remained unbeaten against Inter Miami at home in eight all-time meetings and ascended to fourth place in the East while Miami fell to sixth after suffering its second loss in its past four league matches (1-2-1).

Inter Miami played without superstar forward Lionel Messi, who missed his second consecutive match across all competitions with a mild hamstring injury.

Goalkeeper Oscar Ustari returned to Inter Miami after a five-match absence due to his own hamstring injury, but he was greeted by a relentless barrage of shots.

Ustari made eight saves as Orlando City outshot Inter Miami 22-10 and 12-5 on shots on target.

Muriel struck quickly in the game’s second minute, capitalizing on a great through ball by Ojeda.

Miami leveled the match only three minutes later, however, when defensive midfielder Yannick Bright delivered his first MLS goal on a quick shot off a failed clearance attempt by Orlando.

Orlando City then took control with three second-half goals.

Muriel scored again in the 50th minute. Instead of kicking the ball deep on a corner kick, Ojeda rolled it short toward Muriel, who dribbled past Jordi Alba and fired a quick shot past Ustari.

In the 58th minute, Ojeda controlled a long ball from distance from Muriel, stopped and then snuck a shot just inside the near post from the corner of the 18-yard box past Ustari.

Marco Pasalic put the finishing touches on Orlando’s victory with an unassisted goal in the 88th minute.

Orlando goalkeeper Pedro Gallese suffered an injury scare midway through the second half after making a spectacular save. With Gallese off his line, Luis Suarez fired a deep shot from just across midfield trying to sneak it over him. Gallese recovered enough to swat the ball away but landed awkwardly on his left leg and collapsed into the back of the net. But after being attended to by Orlando’s medical staff, Gallese finished the game.

Liberty’s Breanna Stewart targets return before end of month

New York Liberty star forward Breanna Stewart is bidding to return to the court before her 31st birthday.

That’s Aug. 27, if you’re counting the days or planning to send a card.

The two-time WNBA MVP sustained a bone bruise in her right knee during New York’s 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on July 26.

“I feel great. I just finished working out on the court in the back,” Stewart said. “And it’s really just kind of giving my leg, the bone, a little bit of time while we have it. But hoping to be back sooner than later and really just wanting to be back with my team.”

Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello previously set late August as a tentative timeline for Stewart’s return.

“We want to be smart with it,” Brondello said. “If we can get her back at the end of August, I think that’s great. It’s big picture … so when she’s ready. But keep it fresh for the playoffs. I know she’ll be back before then. How early she gets back before the end of the (regular) season, I don’t know.”

Stewart is averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 24 games (all starts) this season.

A seven-time All-Star, Stewart was selected as the WNBA MVP in 2018 and 2023, the Finals MVP in 2018 and 2020 and the 2016 Rookie of the Year.

Stewart has been on league championship teams with the Seattle Storm (2018, 2020) and Liberty (2024).

MLS News: Charlotte FC’s Wilfried Zaha’s late goal stuns 10-man FC Cincinnati side

0

Wilfried Zaha’s late goal propelled Charlotte FC over a 10-man FC Cincinnati side in a significant 1-0 road victory on Sunday evening.

For Cincinnati (15-7-4, 49 points), the loss is a missed chance to claim first place in the Supporters’ Shield race after the Philadelphia Union lost their Saturday match. Charlotte FC’s (13-11-2, 41 points) triumph means they have completed a regular-season sweep over Cincinnati.

The momentum of the game shifted in the 70th minute when midfielder Tah Brian Anunga picked up a clumsy red card. The Cameroonian stamped on Djibril Diani’s leg while trying to stop a counter-attack.

Zaha and Charlotte capitalized on their numbers advantage 15 minutes later. Idan Toklomati set up the goal when he headed a stray ball in the box toward Zaha. Zaha’s one-touch volley squeaked by Cincinnati keeper Roman Celentano (three saves) at the near post to give Charlotte the only goal of the match.

The goal marked Zaha’s seventh of the season and Toklomati’s second assist.

Charlotte FC, missing leading goalscorer Pep Biel (hamstring) and captain Ashley Westwood (yellow card suspension), struggled to get into the game and win possession early. They attempted just one shot in the first half and struggled to link up play in the final third.

Zaha couldn’t deal with Cincinnati’s physicality and looked frustrated during the game’s stoppages. They relied on a clutch performance from goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina (seven saves).

Cincinnati kept applying pressure on Charlotte’s defense as the second half continued, shooting 16 times in total.

Charlotte rarely advanced the ball near the final third. Kahlina parried away several shots from Ender Echenique and Anunga, and Cincinnati looked fully in control.

WTA News: Coco Gauff breezes, Emma Navarro falls in Cincinnati Open

0

Second-seeded Coco Gauff needed just 70 minutes to deliver a 6-3, 6-2 victory over China’s Xinyu Wang in second-round play Sunday at the Cincinnati Open in Mason, Ohio.

Playing for the first time since winning the National Bank Open doubles title with McCartney Kessler in Montreal, Gauff shrugged off eight double faults by rebuffing all five of Wang’s break points.

Emma Navarro was not as fortunate in her first match. Germany’s Ella Seidel knocked out the eighth-seeded American 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 as Seidel broke Navarro three times in the third set.

Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova pulled off the other upset in afternoon action as she defeated No. 17 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-4, 7-6 (0). Kudermetova collected six aces to Bencic’s one. Bencic committed five double faults to Kudermetova’s one.

No. 7 Jasmine Paolini of Italy earned a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) win over Greece’s Maria Sakkari in a match that nearly took a crazy turn at the end. Paolini built a 6-0 lead in the second-set tiebreaker, but Sakkari saved five consecutive match points before double-faulting for an anticlimactic finish.

“I feel sorry for her, but, yes, after she missed the first serve, I was like, ‘Please make the double fault,” Paolini told Tennis Channel with a laugh. “I have to be honest. Because it was a really tough tiebreak… and I was praying.”

No. 16 Clara Tauson of Denmark built on the momentum from her semifinal run at Montreal with a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4 win over Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. No. 23 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia claimed a walkover against Columbia’s Camila Osorio due to an abdominal injury.

No. 26 Ashlyn Krueger, No. 31 Magda Linette of Poland and No. 32 Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine advanced to the third round with victories, while No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland learned a day early that she’s headed to the fourth round.

Swiatek was slated to face No. 25 Marta Kostyuk on Monday, but the Ukrainian withdrew Sunday due to a right wrist injury.

In the seven evening/night matches, seeded players won three, but dropped four.

No. 4 Jessica Pegula rebounded from a first-round loss in Montreal by cruising past Australian Kimberly Birrell, 6-4, 6-3. No. 29 McCartney Kessler edged Cincinnati native Caty McNally by the same 6-4, 6-3 score, while, in the final match of the evening, No. 11 Karolina Muchova, from the Czech Republic, spent 2 hours, 6 minutes on court to best France’s Caroline Garcia, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (0).

Garcia, who is planning to retire after the U.S. Open, won the Cincinnati Open in 2022.

Four other seeded players are now making plans for the final Grand Slam of the season. No. 10 Elina Svitolina, from Ukraine, Australian No. 15 Daria Kasatkina, No. 20 Linda Noskova, from the Czech Republic, and No. 24 Sofia Kenin all were eliminated by unseeded players. Svitolina dropped a three-setter, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Barbora Krejcikova, of the Czech Republic; Kasatkina fell, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti; Noskova was stunned by 17-year old American Iva Jovic, 6-3, 6-0 and Kenin lost a 2-hour, 26-minute marathon to France’s Varvara Gracheva, 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-3.

MLS News: Darren Yapi’s first career brace lifts Rapids over Minnesota

0

Darren Yapi scored his first career brace to lift the visiting Colorado Rapids to a 2-1 victory at the Minnesota United on Sunday in Saint Paul, Minn.

Yapi’s fifth and sixth goals of the season came 10 minutes apart in the second half for Colorado (9-11-6, 33 points), which snapped a nine-match road league winless streak.

It was perfect timing for a good game from the 20-year-old, coming in the first league match after Colorado dealt joint team scoring leader Djordje Mihailovic to Toronto for a fee worth up to $9 million.

Zack Steffen made nine saves for the Rapids, who moved up two places to eighth in the Western Conference standings in the scrap for nine conference playoff places.

Tani Oluwaseyi cut Minnesota’s late deficit in half with his 10th league goal after also scoring three times in Leagues Cup play.

But the third-place Loons (12-6-8, 44 points) have now lost back-to-back games in all competitions.

Minnesota outshot Colorado 9-4 during the first half but rarely seriously worked Steffen.

Colorado grew into the game after the break and had already created a couple quality opportunities before Yapi broke through for his brace.

In the 60th minute, Yapi ran onto Sam Vines’ long outlet ball down the left, then cut in on his right foot and guided a low finish beyond Dayne St. Clair into the bottom left corner.

In the 70th, he was a late-arriving runner as the Rapids pushed numbers forward on the counter, receiving Rafael Navarro’s cross-field pass and this time finishing with more power past St. Clair from the right side of the box.

Oluwaseyi pulled Minnesota’s goal back in the 73rd minute after the Loons attacked down the left, finishing off Joseph Rosales’ cross from near the penalty spot.

Minnesota continued to apply pressure from there but lacked composure.

Oluwaseyi wasted another effort after getting behind Colorado’s back line, failing to hit the target. On another promising foray down the right, Rosales tried to cut the ball onto his stronger left foot, which allowed his shot attempt to be blocked.
