MLB News: Marcell Ozuna’s 2 HRs help Braves earn doubleheader sweep of Marlins

Marcell Ozuna hit a pair of long home runs to power the Atlanta Braves to an 8-6 win over the visiting Miami Marlins on Saturday to sweep the day-night doubleheader.

The Braves won the first game 7-1 and have won three of four games in the five-game set.

Ozuna was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. It gives him 18 home runs this season.

Atlanta rookie Drake Baldwin went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and has driven in 10 runs in the series.

Atlanta starter Erick Fedde (4-12) earned his first win since joining the Braves. He pitched five innings and allowed four runs on five hits, four walks and four strikeouts. It was Fedde’s first victory since May 9 when he was with St. Louis.

Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his 16th save.

Miami starter Sandy Alcantara (6-11) worked five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits, four walks and four strikeouts. He gave up both of Ozuna’s home runs.

The Marlins scored four runs in the fourth inning. Jakob Marsee doubled in a run and scored on Eric Wagaman’s single. Xavier Edwards, celebrating his 26th birthday, drove in two runs with a single.

The Braves got a run back in bottom of the fourth when Ozuna crushed a fastball 433 feet to center field.

Atlanta took the lead in the fifth inning by scoring four runs. Baldwin drove in a run with a single and Ozuna followed with a three-run homer that carried 416 feet into the left field seats.

The Braves took an 8-4 lead by scoring three runs in the sixth off reliever Valente Bellozo. Matt Olson singled home a run and Baldwin drove in two runs with a single.

The Marlins trimmed the deficit to two runs on a two-run single by Heriberto Hernandez in the seventh.

MLB News: Corbin Carroll stays hot, Lourdes Gurriel delivers walk-off in D-backs’ win over Rockies

Corbin Carroll homered for the third straight game, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in three runs and had a walk-off double in the ninth, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5 in Phoenix on Saturday.

Geraldo Perdomo doubled with one out in the ninth off Jimmy Herget (0-2) and scored on Gurriel’s double, which one-hopped the wall in left field and gave rookie right-hander Andrew Hoffman (1-0) his first major league win in his sixth appearance.

Carroll tied his career high with 25 homers and has four in the last seven games. His game-tying shot in the fifth was measured at an estimated 437 feet.

Brenton Doyle had two hits including a homer and Ezequiel Tovar had two hits and an RBI for the Rockies, who have lost six in a row and have been outscored 66-17 in the stretch.

Perdomo had three hits and scored twice, Ketel Marte had two hits and scored twice, and Gurriel and Blaze Alexander had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks, who have won five of seven.

Marte is 14-for-30 with two homers and nine RBIs against Colorado this season.

Tyler Freeman, who walked in five plate appearances, has reached base in 51 of his last 52 starts, but Diamondbacks left-hander Andrew Saalfrank got him to ground into a double play with a runner on first to end the eighth.

Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave up five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, with five walks and two strikeouts. Three of his walks scored.

Colorado starter Bradley Blalock gave up five runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, with four strikeouts and three walks. Two of his three walks scored.

The D-backs took a 1-0 lead on Gurriel’s single in the first before the Rockies scored the next four for a 4-1 lead.

Doyle hit a two-run homer and Kyle Farmer singled in a run in the second. Tovar walked, stole second and scored on rookie Warming Bernabel’s single in the third.

Marte doubled in a run and Gurriel hit a sacrifice fly as the D-backs cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third. Carroll’s homer triggered a two-run fifth capped by Adrian Del Castillo’s two-out, run-scoring double for a 5-4 lead.

Rodriguez, in line for the victory, walked Farmer with one out in the sixth before being replaced by Juan Burgos, who gave up Tovar’s single to tie the game at 5-5.

MLB News: Max Kepler’s double backs Jesus Luzardo as Phillies beat Rangers

Max Kepler’s two-run double in the seventh inning propelled Philadelphia to the front and backed the solid outing by Jesus Luzardo as the Phillies beat the Texas Rangers and struggling ace Jacob deGrom 3-2 on Saturday in the second of a three-game interleague series in Arlington, Texas.

The Phillies guaranteed their third straight series win and have captured five of their past six games. Texas, meanwhile, has dropped three in a row.

Luzardo (11-5) was the beneficiary of the Phillies’ seventh-inning rally after hurling six frames while allowing a run on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk. He won his third straight start and is 4-0 over his past six appearances while allowing 14 runs over 35 2/3 innings over that stretch.

deGrom (10-5) lost for the third outing in a row despite cruising through 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

However, things unraveled for him and the Rangers in the seventh. Brandon Marsh singled with one out and went to second on deGrom’s only walk of the game. Kepler followed with a ringing double to right field that scored both baserunners and put the Phillies up 2-1.

After Edmundo Sosa’s flyout to center pushed Kepler to third, the Rangers’ starter was lifted in favor of Danny Coulombe, who allowed an RBI single by Stott that expanded Philadelphia’s lead.

deGrom, who has won just once in his past six starts, allowed all three runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out eight.

Corey Seager trimmed Texas’ deficit to one with a solo homer in the eighth off Matt Strahm before closer Jhoan Duran struck out one in a perfect ninth to earn his 19th save.

The Rangers staked deGrom to an early lead when Wyatt Langford’s one-out single in the first inning drove home Seager, who had singled and advanced to second on a single by Marcus Semien.

Philadelphia threatened in the third when Bryson Stott ripped a two-out double into the right field corner. But deGrom fanned Trea Turner to end the inning. The Rangers’ Sam Haggerty opened the bottom of the frame with a double but was also stranded when Luzardo struck out Seager before coaxing Semien and Langford into groundouts.

MLB News: Brewers find another way to win as Mets drop sixth straight

William Contreras hit an insurance two-run homer immediately after his inning-ending flyout was negated by a pitch clock violation Saturday night for the host Milwaukee Brewers, who beat the skidding New York Mets 7-4.

The Brewers rode the four-run seventh to their eighth win in as many games this month. Milwaukee has won 11 of its last 12 overall to improve its record to a baseball-best 72-44.

Pete Alonso tied Darryl Strawberry atop the Mets franchise’s all-time home run list by hitting the first of the team’s three solo homers Saturday, but New York still lost its sixth straight game and for the 10th time in 11 games. Alonso’s homer in the top of the second inning was his 26th of the season and the 252nd of his career.

Sal Frelick hit into a game-tying RBI groundout off Ryne Stanek (2-6) in the seventh inning. Ryan Helsley relieved Stanek, and Isaac Collins delivered the two-out, go-ahead run-scoring single two batters later when his grounder skipped past Mets third baseman Ronny Mauricio.

Helsley then committed a pitch clock violation on Contreras’ flyout to right. Contreras followed with a 399-foot homer to left-center field.

The rally made a winner of Jared Koenig (4-1), who tossed a hitless seventh. Abner Uribe struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth before Trevor Megill notched his 28th save with a one-hit ninth.

Milwaukee starter Tobias Myers allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over 3 1/3 innings.

Blake Perkins and Andrew Vaughn scored on a two-out error by Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor in the second, and Brice Turang hit a game-tying homer in the fourth.

Starling Marte and Juan Soto also homered for the Mets while Cedric Mullins had an RBI single.

Mets opener Reed Garrett tossed a perfect first inning in his first big league start before Frankie Montas gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts over three innings of bulk relief.

MLB News: C.J. Kayfus’ first homer helps Guardians streak past White Sox again

C.J. Kayfus hit his first home run and Joey Cantillo pitched into the sixth inning as the visiting Cleveland Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Saturday for their fifth straight win.

Cantillo (3-2) allowed one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings for Cleveland, which has won nine of its last 10. Cantillo walked two and struck out three.

Nic Enright, Hunter Gaddis and Erik Sabrowski combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings before Cade Smith retired the White Sox in order in the ninth for his fifth save.

Michael A. Taylor hit a solo homer for Chicago, which was held to four hits and lost its sixth straight.

Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the first against Sean Burke (4-9) when Kyle Manzardo’s two-out single drove in Steven Kwan, who doubled to begin the game.

Taylor tied the game with two outs in the second when he deposited Cantillo’s first pitch over the left-center field wall for his eighth homer of the season.

The Guardians regained the lead with a run in the fourth when Kayfus drew a leadoff walk and raced around to score on Brayan Rocchio’s double.

Burke gave up two runs on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings.

The White Sox put runners on the corners with one out in the fifth, but Cantillo escaped unscathed as Edgar Quero struck out and Luis Robert Jr. grounded into a fielder’s choice.

Cleveland tacked on an insurance run with Kayfus’ leadoff homer in the sixth against Bryan Hudson. The 23-year-old Kayfus turned on a 2-0 fastball for his first long ball since being promoted to the majors on Aug. 2.

Chicago threatened with two runners on in the eighth before Mike Tauchman grounded into an inning-ending double play.

The White Sox have lost 12 of their last 13 meetings with the Guardians, dating back to July 4, 2024. Taylor had two hits for Chicago, which went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

MLB News: Royals pitching dominates Twins for shutout win

Maikel Garcia and Jonathan India drove in one run apiece, and that was more than enough for the Kansas City Royals as they held on for a 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night in Minneapolis.

Garcia’s RBI double was the lone extra-base hit for Kansas City, which evened the series at one victory apiece with the rubber match set for Sunday afternoon. Kyle Isbel finished 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Ryan Jeffers went 3-for-4 to lead Minnesota, which totaled eight hits, all singles. Austin Martin tallied a pair of singles from the leadoff spot.

Royals left-hander Noah Cameron (6-5) tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory. He scattered six hits, walked two and struck out four.

Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (4-7) allowed one run on four hits in six innings. He walked one and fanned four.

Kansas City’s bullpen combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings to seal the shutout. Left-hander Angel Zerpa notched one out to finish the sixth inning, right-hander Hunter Harvey fired a scoreless seventh and righty Lucas Erceg set the Twins down 1-2-3 in the eighth.

Royals closer Carlos Estevez finished off the Twins in the ninth to collect his 29th save. He needed 16 pitches to complete the inning but did not allow a baserunner as he struck out Mickey Gasper, got Alan Roden to pop out and ended the game by striking out Martin.

Kansas City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third. Isbel hit a two-out single to left field and came around to score on Garcia’s double to right.

A one-run game persisted until the ninth, when the Royals added one more run. Adam Frazier hit a one-out single to left, advanced to second on when Mike Yastrzemski drew a walk and scored moments later on India’s single to left.

The Twins had a runner on third base three times but could not push across a run.

Royce Lewis struck out swinging with a runner on third to end the first inning. Lewis had another chance in the third with runners on first and third with one out, but he grounded into an inning-ending double play.

In the fifth, Lewis hit a flyout to left with runners on first and third and two outs.

MLB News: Athletics’ Brent Rooker, Shea Langeliers bash O’s

Brent Rooker and Shea Langeliers each homered and combined to drive in seven runs as the Athletics blew out the host Baltimore Orioles 11-3 on Saturday night.

Jack Perkins (1-2) pitched six innings for his first major league victory, giving up three runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts. The rookie right-hander made his second start in his 10th career game.

Michael Kelly worked two scoreless innings out of the Athletics bullpen and Hogan Harris took care of the ninth to ensure a split in the first two games of this series between two teams occupying last place in their respective American League divisions.

Rooker knocked in four runs and Langeliers had three hits to go with his three RBIs. JJ Bleday and Nick Kurtz added two hits apiece and Gio Urshela knocked in two runs.

Gunnar Henderson provided Baltimore’s offense with a three-run homer in the first. Brandon Young (0-6) took the loss as he surrendered six runs and six hits over three innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

There were similarities to Friday night’s series opener as the Orioles scored all their runs in the first for the second night in a row. But this time, Baltimore didn’t win.

The Orioles’ four hits were one more than the previous game. They left three runners on base, one more than Friday night.

The Athletics posted double figures in runs for the third time in a 14-game span and the 10th time this season.

Despite Langeliers’ two-run homer, the Athletics trailed 3-2 after the first. They went ahead with a four-run third as Rooker blasted a three-run shot for his 24th long ball of the season.

Rooker drove in the first run in the Athletics’ five-run fifth. Luis Urias’ single and Urshela’s two-run double added to the advantage before Langeliers’ RBI ground-rule double.

The first three batters in Baltimore’s batting order each had one hit — accounting for all of the Orioles’ offense — until Ryan Mountcastle’s two-out single in the ninth.

MLB News: Noelvi Marte gives clutch performance as Reds edge Pirates

Noelvi Marte had three hits and an RBI and scored the eventual winning run to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 2-1 victory over the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.

Marte’s efforts backed up a quality start from Nick Martinez (10-9), who gave up one run on four hits over seven innings to help the Reds snap a three-game losing streak.

The Pirates had one last chance in the ninth to record what would have been their fifth win in a row against Cincinnati this season and third of this series. Reds closer Emilio Pagan issued a leadoff walk to Oneil Cruz but recovered by inducing a flyout from Andrew McCutchen. Cincinnati’s defense did the rest as shortstop Elly De La Cruz caught a line drive from Nick Gonzales and doubled up Cruz at first base to end the game.

Pagan secured his 25th save of the season.

Marte roped a double to left field off Pirates long reliever Carmen Mlodzinski (2-7) to lead off the top of the seventh. Ryan Borucki replaced Mlodzinski on the mound one out later. He retired TJ Friedl on a fly to right, but it was deep enough for Marte to score on the sacrifice and give the Reds their eventual winning margin.

Pittsburgh used an opener on Saturday, as rookie Braxton Ashcraft started the game and threw 3 1/3 innings. He gave up one run on three hits, walked one and struck out five on 56 pitches.

The Pirates struck first on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Pham, which scored Jared Triolo in the bottom of the third. Triolo doubled off Cincinnati starter Martinez to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a Spencer Horwitz single.

Ashcraft was pulled after giving up a single to Spencer Steer with one out in the fourth inning and replaced by Mlodzinski. After Tyler Stephenson struck out, Marte tied the game 1-1 with a double into the left field corner that scored Steer.

Mlodzinski gave up one run on three hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Horwitz led the Pirates with two of their seven hits. Steer had two hits for Cincinnati, which totaled seven.

MLB News: Pete Alonso hits 252nd HR to tie Darryl Strawberry for Mets’ mark

Pete Alonso tied Darryl Strawberry atop the New York Mets’ all-time home run list Saturday night when the slugging first baseman homered in the second inning against the host Milwaukee Brewers.

Alonso hit a 1-2 pitch from Tobias Myers 413 feet beyond the left-center wall for his 252nd regular-season homer, tying the mark set by Strawberry from 1983-90. Alonso tied the record in his 963rd game – 146 fewer than Strawberry.

The homer was the 26th of the season for Alonso, a five-time All-Star.

The milestone homer was hit at an appropriate locale for Alonso, who delivered the biggest hit of his career last Oct. 3 with his go-ahead three-run blast for the Mets against the Brewers in the ninth inning of the decisive Game 3 of their National League wild-card series. New York went on to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in the Division Series before falling in the NLCS to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.
