NCAAF News: RB position a strength as Pitt takes on Virginia

Asked how he would employ his talented cadre of running backs Saturday at Virginia, Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi joked that he was waiting for media advice.

Narduzzi was in a jocular mood coming off a 19-9 upset of then-No. 20 Syracuse as Rodney Hammond Jr., subbing for the nation’s all-purpose yardage leader Israel Abanikanda, carried 28 times for 124 yards and a touchdown against the top defense in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Not only did Hammond excel, Notre Dame grad transfer C’Bo Flemister emerged for Pitt. During a show-of-force, 11-play drive, Flemister was called on for 10 carries that produced 42 yards and a touchdown.

“If Izzy feels good, we want to give him his touches,” Narduzzi said. “Rodney, C’Bo — it’s a good problem to have.”

It was a much-needed win for defending ACC champion Pitt (5-4, 2-3), which lost three of its first four league games but can clinch a bowl trip with a victory over Virginia (3-6, 1-5).

The Cavaliers also had a chance for a big win on Saturday before falling to then-No. 17 North Carolina 31-28.

Minus his top three receivers, who were sidelined by injuries, Brennan Armstrong threw for 232 yards and rushed for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Sackett Wood, who entered the game with five career catches, had six receptions for 94 yards.

Virginia also was missing its top rusher Perris Jones, giving Mike Hollins (16 carries, 75 yards) and Ronnie Walker Jr. (six carries, 30 yards, touchdown) a chance to thrive.

On Tuesday, Virginia coach Tony Elliott called all three of his sidelined receivers day-to-day but sounded optimistic about the return of top wideout Keytaon Thompson (53 catches, 579 yards), who is “probably the closest.”

Deep threat Lavel Davis Jr. (16 catches, 371 yards) is out of concussion protocol, Elliott said. And Dontayvion Wicks (30 catches, 430 yards) is nursing a bone bruise.

Elliott said he is preparing his team for a physical test against the mauling lines of the Panthers.

“They’re gonna play Steel City football,” Elliott said.

Pitt gained a 48-38 shootout victory vs. Virginia last year despite 487 passing yards and three touchdown throws from Virginia’s Armstrong.

Magic’s game vs. Mavs moved up due to tropical storm

Wednesday’s game between the host Orlando Magic and Dallas Mavericks will tip off at 5:30 p.m. ET instead of its originally scheduled time of 7 p.m. ET due to Tropical Storm Nicole.

Doors to the Amway Center will open to fans one hour before tip.

Orlando enters the contest with four losses in its last five games, while the Mavericks have won four straight. Dallas has won six of the last seven meetings between the teams, including a 114-105 victory on Oct. 30.

NCAAF News: ‘Remember November’: Kentucky faces Vanderbilt, seeks strong finish

If attaining bowl eligibility with last weekend’s win over Missouri wasn’t enough to keep complacency from becoming an issue with Kentucky, the Wildcats got another boost with Tuesday night’s release of the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

The Wildcats (6-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) will take a No. 24 CFP ranking into Saturday afternoon’s matchup with Vanderbilt in Lexington, Ky.

It is the second consecutive season the Wildcats have earned a spot in the CFP’s Top 25. They finished No. 22 in last season’s final pre-bowl poll.

At his weekly media conference earlier in the day, coach Mark Stoops talked about the importance of a strong finish for his team.

“With three games left in November, we still have to be relentless in our improvement,” Stoops said. “We’ve got to finish strong. That old saying ‘remember November’ is no joke. You want to remember how you finish.”

The Wildcats will be going for their 40th win in the last five seasons when they open a three-game homestand against the Commodores (3-6, 0-5). Matchups against Georgia and Louisville will follow. An improbable sweep of all three would put the Wildcats in position for a second consecutive 10-win season, including a bowl game.

Their chances of that might come down to the health of quarterback Will Levis, who passed for three touchdowns last week in a 21-17 win at Missouri while playing through foot and shoulder issues that led to five sacks.

Stoops said Levis’ lack of mobility was “unfortunate for himself and for us because we’ve seen what he’s done in the past with his mobility. But Will will continue to work extremely hard to get treatment and be as ready as he can be to help his team.”

A senior who transferred from Penn State in time for the 2021 season, Levis has rushed for 11 career touchdowns, sixth on the school’s all-time list for quarterbacks and just one behind fifth-place Jared Lorenzen’s 12.

Mistakes were costly for the Commodores last week in their 38-27 loss to South Carolina. They rushed for 226 yards, but four turnovers were too much to overcome as they dropped their 26th consecutive conference game. Vanderbilt hasn’t won an SEC contest since a 21-14 victory over Missouri on Oct. 19, 2019.

The Commodores on Saturday will be without starting quarterback AJ Swann, who came away with an undisclosed injury against South Carolina.

“He’ll be OK, just not available this weekend,” Vandy coach Clark Lea said. “So we’ll keep tabs on him and, hopefully, get him back for the Florida game. But time will tell.”

Vandy is host to the Gators on Nov. 19.

Mike Wright, who started at quarterback for the first three games this season, will start against Kentucky while being backed up by junior Ken Seals.

Wright has completed 58.3 percent of his 96 passes for 654 yards and eight touchdowns in seven games and has rushed for 328 yards with an average of 7.5 yards per carry.

Swann has passed for 1,195 yards and rushed for a net of minus-55.

Tight-knit Nuggets continue road-heavy stretch at Pacers

The Denver Nuggets are finding out how to bond early in the season. With a majority of their games on the road, the Nuggets have spent a lot of time together on planes and in hotels.

It hasn’t hurt them in the standings.

Denver is riding a three-game winning streak, including a win at San Antonio Monday night to kick off a four-game trip that continues at the Indiana Pacers Wednesday night in Indianapolis.

The Nuggets overcame 22 total turnovers in the win over the Spurs with keys plays from Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic.

Murray has ramped up his playing time after missing all of last season while recovering from left ACL surgery. He had two crucial assists in the fourth quarter to hold off a San Antonio rally. One was a threaded assist to Aaron Gordon for a dunk and another one to Jokic for an easy basket.

It was a reminder of how effective the two-man game between Murray and Jokic can be.

“I love Jamal,” Denver coach Michael Malone said. “I love everything he’s about. Him and Nikola are just like peanut butter and jelly.”

The Nuggets currently lead the NBA in 3-point shooting at 41.9 percent, and a large part of that comes from the play of Michael Porter Jr., who is hitting 49.3 percent from behind the arc. The sharpshooter has played better defense this season, but he was on the bench during crunch time Monday night.

Porter wasn’t upset that he wasn’t in the game.

“Even though I want to be on the floor, it’s whatever coach thinks gives us the best chance to win,” Porter said.

Denver will face a Pacers team that’s on a two-game winning streak and has won four of its last five. Myles Turner was the catalyst in a 129-122 win over New Orleans on Monday night with 37 points and 12 rebounds.

Turner missed the first four games with an ankle injury but has found his groove.

“My biggest thing is just trying to stay healthy and keep my rhythm going,” Turner said. “It was a great individual performance, great team performance. All eyes forward.”

Turner’s production might be needed even more with guard Chris Duarte expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a sprained left ankle suffered Friday night.

Turner knows what he needs to do to help the team.

“Just running the floor, I think that’s big for me,” Turner said. “When I get out there in transition, I know I’m quicker and faster than a lot of these bigs. When I get out there, even if I don’t get the ball, someone on the perimeter is going to get the ball because they’ve got to tag or force help. If I can get myself, my motor going early, everything else feels easier.”

It’ll be a challenge to stop a Nuggets team that is healthier than it has been in the last two years.

NCAAF News: After lopsided loss, Miami to meet Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech, which is 3-2 since Geoff Collins was fired as coach, will host Miami on Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Atlanta.

The Yellow Jackets (4-5, 3-3 ACC) are favored against the disappointing Hurricanes (4-5, 2-3), who are coming off a 45-3 home loss to Florida State.

While the Hurricanes no doubt are feeling embarrassed by the lopsided score against their rivals, the Yellow Jackets have some momentum.

Zach Pyron, the team’s true freshman quarterback, made his first career start last week and led the Jackets to a 28-27 win at Virginia Tech.

The Hokies led 27-16 in the fourth quarter, but Pyron engineered two late touchdown drives.

“(Pyron) has ice in his veins for a young kid, whether it’s making a throw or lowering his shoulder to get a first down,” said Jackets interim coach Brent Key, who replaced Collins in September.

Georgia Tech starting QB Jeff Sims, who is out with a foot injury, could be ready for the Miami game. But that doesn’t mean Key will use Sims, who has completed 58.5 percent of his passes this season. Sims hasn’t improved much as a passer in his three years with the Jackets, completing 57.5 percent in 25 games.

Pyron, who has completed 61.7 percent of his throws, has a better QB rating than Sims. Pyron has thrown for 451 yards, and his average yards per attempt is 7.5, which is superior to Sims’ figure of 5.9 this season.

Meanwhile, Miami has had problems at quarterback. Starter Tyler Van Dyke left the Florida State game in the second quarter after he appeared to injure his passing shoulder again, and backup Jake Garcia has averaged one interception per every 20.5 throws (compared with Van Dyke’s 61.3 number).

Third-string QB Jacurri Brown is strong as a runner but has struggled at times as a passer, bouncing or sailing throws.

In addition, Miami’s offensive line is without left tackle Zion Nelson, an NFL prospect who has yet to play this season because of injury, while left guard Jalen Rivers was injured Saturday.

“There’s no sugar-coating it,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “We have a lot of work to do.”

Clippers come off of thrilling win, host Lakers

The Los Angeles Clippers have dominated their roommates, the Los Angeles Lakers, of late and another victory is up for grabs when the two teams meet in their shared downtown building.

The Clippers will take an eight-game winning streak over the Lakers into Wednesday’s second meeting of the season. This time, the Clippers will be the home team after they defeated the host Lakers 103-97 in the season opener.

The Clippers also enter off their best victory of the season when they rallied from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and used a late 15-0 run to earn a 119-117 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday. The result ended Cleveland’s eight-game winning streak.

Clippers star Kawhi Leonard has missed the last eight games with ongoing issues with his knee, so Paul George has expanded his already large presence. George scored 26 points Monday, including a key three-point play in the final minute that pushed his team in front.

George has averaged 25.0 points per game, but has delivered even more at 31.0 points per game over the last five contests. The Clippers have gone 4-1 in those games to rebound from a four-game losing streak.

Forward Terance Mann has stepped up with his first double-digit scoring games of the season in the last two contests. Mann had a season-best 16 points Monday on 6-of-9 shooting.

“He defended, created offense for himself, created offense for the team and when he’s aggressive it changes our team,” George said. “If we can get T Mann on that level on a nightly basis, he elevates our team.”

Now the Clippers face the Lakers, who they haven’t lost to since July 30, 2020. The Lakers still have a 150-82 advantage in the all-time series.

The Lakers will enter off a 139-116 road defeat to the Utah Jazz on Monday.

Anthony Davis scored 29 points for the Lakers on Monday with LeBron James out because of left foot soreness. The Lakers also were without scoring guard Lonnie Walker IV (illness) and defensive-minded guard Patrick Beverley (illness). Utah shot 55.8 percent from the field.

“It seems like we’ve lost all our defensive intensity, and that’s what’s killing us,” Davis said. “It sucks to be 2-8. We had enough to win this game. We’ve got enough to win every game.”

The Lakers’ Darvin Ham is having a rough start to his coaching career. The Lakers lost their first five games, pulled off consecutive victories, then lost their last three, including two to the Jazz in that stretch.

“It’s not going to always be like this,” Ham said. “We’re going to turn the corner. I didn’t come here to lose. They didn’t bring me here to lose. But there is a process involved where we have to go through tough times.”

Russell Westbrook scored 22 points off the bench for the Lakers on Monday and has averaged 16.3 points per game in nine contests, with three of those as a starter. It would be his lowest points-per-game average since his second season in 2009-10 with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

NCAAF News: Oregon coach Dan Lanning shuts down Auburn rumors

A report came out Sunday that linked Oregon coach Dan Lanning to the vacant job at Auburn. On Monday night, Lanning unlinked himself from the Southeastern Conference job he might otherwise be suitably prepped to take.

Lanning is nine games into his tenure at Oregon, sitting at 8-1 overall, and 6-0 in the Pac-12, good for first place. His Ducks are primed to move up from last week’s No. 8 slot when the latest College Football Playoff rankings are unveiled Tuesday night.

Still, Lanning was forced to address rumors from an Auburn-produced fan site that there’s mutual interest between the school and the former Nick Saban assistant.

“The grass is not always greener,” Lanning, 36, said about the report. “The grass is damn green in Eugene. I want to be here in Eugene for as long as Eugene will have me.

“… Oregon checks every box for me,” he added. “Hopefully that’s the last time I have to address it, but the reality is this is a destination, not just for me but for elite players.”

Auburn fired football coach Bryan Harsin last week after one-plus seasons and a 9-12 overall record. Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, a former All-American at the school, is the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Lanning was a graduate assistant to Saban in 2015 and eventually made his way to being Kirby Smart’s defensive coordinator at Georgia from 2018-21. Lanning coached the Georgia defense that went on to win the national championship last season.

Oregon’s only loss this season was a 49-3 thumping at the hands of Smart’s Bulldogs on Sept. 3 in the opening week.

The Ducks face Pac-12 foe Washington (7-2, 4-2) on Saturday in Eugene.

Bucks coming off first loss as Thunder seek revenge

The Milwaukee Bucks beat the Oklahoma City Thunder a few days ago without Giannis Antetokounmpo.

When the Bucks take on the Thunder on Wednesday in Oklahoma City, they might be without another one of their primary pieces.

Jrue Holiday, who played a major role in the Bucks’ 108-94 home win over Oklahoma City on Saturday, is listed as doubtful for Wednesday’s game after spraining his right ankle late in Milwaukee’s loss to Atlanta on Monday.

The loss was the Bucks’ first of the season.

Antetokounmpo, who didn’t play Saturday, is listed as probable with left knee soreness.

Holiday had 10 points, 13 assists and six rebounds in Milwaukee’s win over the Thunder.

While Antetokounmpo and Holiday get plenty of attention, Jevon Carter has played a big role in Milwaukee’s hot start as well.

His defensive effort went a long way toward the Bucks holding Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to a season-low 18 points.

“He just can be a pest and kind of bother people,” Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer said. “Gilgeous-Alexander has the ball a lot so to have somebody that kind of embraces having to guard all those screens and get into them, we’re fortunate to have Jevon be able to do that.”

The Thunder trailed by as many as 24 in the third quarter but cut it to 10 in the fourth before Brook Lopez and Holiday helped the Bucks put the game away for good.

“That’s what effort does,” Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault said. “When you give effort, the game can turn your way and you can benefit from some chance and you can drum up some plays even in the face of adversity and I thought that’s what happened in the second half.

“We just need to apply that to all 48 (minutes).”

While Milwaukee is looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season after a 9-0 start, the Thunder are trying to snap a three-game losing streak.

Daigneault said he was embracing the challenge for a young team facing one of the NBA’s best.

“Playing against the best teams is a great opportunity because it’s the most accurate barometer of where you’re at,” Daigneault said. “Against that team, you have to work to score. They make you work. That’s why they’re a great defense.”

Heading into Wednesday’s games, the Bucks are the NBA’s top defense, with a 101.9 defensive rating — the number of points allowed per 100 possessions.

Budenholzer said the Thunder present plenty of offensive challenge.

“They score so much in the paint, they drive it so hard, they do a good job of kind of slipping screens and creating driving lanes and just driving it in general and spacing the court with five out,” Budenholzer said.

The Thunder are No. 7 at 108.8 in defensive rating, though during their three-game losing streak Oklahoma City has posted a 113.6, dropping on the list.

Wednesday’s game, the final meeting of the season between the teams, is the first of back-to-back home games for the Thunder. That marks their only two home games in an eight-game stretch.

For Milwaukee, it’s the second in a three-game road trip that began with Monday’s 117-98 loss in Atlanta.

NCAAF News: Houston faces Temple with all signs pointing to a shootout

It would be easy to criticize Houston’s defense following last week’s 77-63 loss to SMU.

But Cougars coach Dana Holgorsen took the opposite approach.

“The key is moving forward,” Holgorsen said. “They played well. That’s the greatest single quarterback performance I’ve seen in a long time.”

As the Cougars (5-4, 3-2 AAC) prepare to host Temple (3-6, 1-4) on Saturday in an American Athletic Conference game, most questions in Holgorsen’s weekly press conference were directed toward the performance of Houston’s defense in the prior game.

SMU scored on its first nine drives and 11 of 12 overall.

Quarterback Tanner Mordecai threw nine touchdown passes for the Mustangs in the highest-scoring regulation game in FBS history.

“I don’t think that’s who we are defensively,” Holgorsen said. “Our guys competed. If I was looking at a defense that loafed and was not playing with effort and not competing, we’d have a real problem. It wasn’t that.”

Houston’s goal now is to quickly erase those bad memories.

“Better do it quick,” Holgorsen said. “Got a hot Temple coming in. We can’t overlook this one. They’ve got my attention. And we’ll make sure they get our players’ attention as well.”

On a positive note, Houston quarterback Clayton Tune threw for 527 yards and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for 111 yards and a score.

Temple, meanwhile, will look to build on its momentum following a 54-28 victory over South Florida. The Owls were dominant on both sides of the ball and didn’t record one punt for the first time in program history.

“Let’s see if we can keep this thing going,” Temple coach Stan Drayton said.

Running back Edward Saydee set career highs in rushing yards (265) and rushing touchdowns with three. He compiled 334 all-purpose yards, and quarterback E.J. Warner passed for a career-best 344 yards for the first 300-plus yard effort of his career.

“The beauty of explosive plays means there are players that are playing hard without the ball in their hand,” Drayton said.

To continue that trend, those habits must continue to be developed during the week.

“It’s not just gonna show up,” Drayton said. “We’ve got to continue to put the work in.”

Grizzlies, Spurs put close losses behind them ahead of tilt

The Memphis Grizzlies and host San Antonio Spurs will both look to get back on the winning track after last-minute losses when the two Southwest Division rivals square off on Wednesday.

The Grizzlies travel to Texas after a 109-106 loss to Boston at home on Monday. It was the third game in four nights for Memphis, which suffered its first loss in five home contests and had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Memphis was within 107-106 following Desmond Bane’s basket with 3.5 seconds left, but Boston hit two free throws to pad its lead. The Grizzlies then failed to get off a potential game-tying shot when Ja Morant slipped on the final play.

Morant hit for 30 points that included five 3-pointers to pace Memphis. He tallied 14 of his points in the third quarter, when the Grizzlies outscored Boston 31-19 and carried an 85-84 advantage into the final period.

Bane added 19 points for the Grizzlies in the loss, with Dillon Brooks hitting for 13, John Konchar scoring 12 and Brandon Clarke amassing 10 points. Memphis played without center Steven Adams, who was a late scratch after rolling his ankle in the third quarter of Sunday’s victory against Washington.

“Not saying we’re fine with losing, but how we went out and fought no matter what guys weren’t out there was a good sight to see, and really, what we’ve been pretty much doing these last couple seasons,” Morant said.

“Just have to lock in more, make shots tougher, rebound and just continue to play our style of basketball for 48 minutes.”

The Spurs have dropped four straight games, including a home-and-home set with the Denver Nuggets. The most recent setback was on Monday at home, when Keldon Johnson’s 30 points and a career-best 20 points by Tre Jones were not enough to keep San Antonio from falling to the Nuggets 115-109.

San Antonio battled to the end in a game that had 11 ties and 25 lead changes. Johnson’s layup with 4:06 remaining put the Spurs on top for the final time before Denver finished the game with an 11-4 run.

“We had (a season-high) 24 turnovers for 35 (Denver) points and that’s really going to make it difficult to win a game,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said afterward. “That’s how we lost it. But I couldn’t be prouder (of the team). Their execution, their competitiveness — that’s who they have to be night after night. They did a great job. Really good team play.”

Josh Richardson added 22 points off the bench for San Antonio while Devin Vassell racked up 17 points. The Spurs’ defense was much better after losing by 25 at Denver on Saturday, forcing the Nuggets into 22 turnovers.

San Antonio’s six losses this season are by an average of 20 points.

“Everybody was just trying to make plays down the stretch,” Jones said. “We were doing everything we could to give ourselves a chance to win.”
