In the day’s two other matches, NRG was playing on red as they topped FlyQuest in 27 minutes, and Immortals, who were playing on blue, got the best of 100 Thieves in 27 minutes. It was a rare victory for Immortals, who came out on top for just the third time in 13 group stage matches.

Aces aim to clip Wings in finale of home-and-home set

The Las Vegas Aces will look for their 10th straight victory on Friday night when they conclude a home-and-home series against host the Dallas Wings in Arlington, Texas.

The Aces recorded an 89-82 victory in Las Vegas on Wednesday to remain the WNBA’s only undefeated team at home (10-0). Las Vegas (16-1) received 28 points from Jackie Young in the victory but had to come back from an early 14-point deficit.

A’ja Wilson collected 22 points and 13 rebounds, Chelsea Gray scored 20 points and Alysha Clark added 10 points for the Aces.

Las Vegas played without Kelsey Plum, who was dealing with an illness.

“It’s not always a bad thing to walk into a fight and get punched,” Aces coach Becky Hammon said after the comeback. “You’ve got to be able to take it.”

Dallas led by nine points at halftime and by two starting the fourth quarter. The lead switched hands several times before the Aces went in front for good.

Las Vegas’ lone loss of the season was a 94-77 setback to the Connecticut Sun on June 8.

Natasha Howard recorded a season-best 32 points on Wednesday for the Wings (8-9), who fell to 2-7 on the road.

Teaira McCowan added 14 points and 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Arike Ogunbowale contributed 12 points, albeit none in the second half. She made just 5 of 20 shots from the floor.

Star forward Satou Sabally finished with nine points while being limited to just 18 minutes due to an illness. She did not play in the second half.

“We don’t play 40 minutes and that shows — that’s how we lose the game,” Sabally said. “We will get punished if we don’t execute for the whole game.”

Lynx try for fifth straight win, face last-place Mercury

The Minnesota Lynx will try to extend their season-best winning streak to five games by beating the visiting Phoenix Mercury for the second time in less than a week on Friday in Minneapolis.

The Lynx (8-9) knocked off the host Mercury 86-76 on Saturday before opening their four-game homestand with a 90-83 victory over the Indiana Fever on Wednesday. The Mercury (3-13) followed their setback against the Lynx with a 99-95 loss at the New York Liberty on Wednesday for their eighth defeat in nine games.

In the teams’ last meeting, the Mercury took a 55-51 lead on Sug Sutton’s 3-pointer with 4:25 left in the third quarter, but the Lynx ended the period on a 10-2 run to take 61-57 advantage they wouldn’t relinquish.

Diamond Miller, who was the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, finished with a season-high 25 points and five steals, while Napheesa Collier had 16 points and nine rebounds. Rachel Banham scored a season-high 13 points off the bench.

The Mercury were paced by Brittney Griner’s 23 points and five rebounds, while Moriah Jefferson chipped in 14 points, a team-high seven assists and four rebounds. Michaela Onyenwere had 10 points and Brianna Turner grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

But Phoenix was undone by 24 turnovers, which the Lynx converted into 18 points.

“Twenty-four turnovers are rough,” Phoenix interim coach Nikki Blue said.

“We just have to be more intentional with what we are trying to get. Our passes and our cuts and the illegal screens are things we have to really clean up. So, 24 turnovers is not feel-good but a lot of those were on us. And the good thing though is a lot of those are correctable.”

The Lynx have won eight of their past 11 games after starting the season 0-6.

“We’re just going along in our journey, figuring it out. We’re OK with that; we’re OK being exactly who we are,” said Lynx guard Kayla McBride, who scored 21 points against Indiana. “We’re just enjoying the process. We never get down on ourselves, it’s, ‘OK, next up, next up.’ That’s a testament to who we are right now.”

Collier has scored more than 30 points in three of her past four games, including 32 against the Fever.

Minnesota fell to the host Mercury 90-81 in the first meeting between the teams, who conclude their season series on Sept. 3 in Minneapolis.

Courtney Williams, improving Sky host two-game set with Dream

Chicago Sky point guard Courtney Williams embodies the turnaround her team has shown in the last week despite a coaching change in the process.

Williams averaged 4.8 points per contest during the Sky’s recent six-game losing streak. She is now the WNBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 20.3 points per contest during the recent three-game winning streak for Chicago (8-9).

Williams will face her former team, the Atlanta Dream, on Friday in the first of two consecutive home games against them. The teams also play Sunday.

Chicago’s interim coach and general manager Emre Vatansever, who took over for James Wade after the latter left to join the NBA’s Toronto Raptors as an assistant, won his first game by leading the Sky to last Sunday’s 89-87 win over the host Indiana Fever.

“It’s just overwhelming,” Vatansever said. “It’s a lot of things to do. It’s not just the coaching part. It’s also the GM part. I would never have thought I’d take over the GM part, too.

“We’re ready for an unexpected situation. This happened all of the sudden and you just step up and take the lead.”

Williams, who is also averaging a career-high 6.1 assists, scored a season-best 28 points in the win over the Fever.

Chicago forward Ruthy Hebard, who gave birth to son Xzavier less than three months ago, is cleared to return to action.

Atlanta (8-8) is also on a three-game winning streak after losing three consecutive games.

Allisha Gray scored 23 points, Cheyenne Parker had 14 points and 11 rebounds in a 90-79 win at the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday.

Rhyne Howard, coming off a career-high 43 points in a 112-84 win over the Sparks in Atlanta on Sunday, finished with 15 points on Wednesday.

Howard was not selected to the WNBA All-Star Game, a snub that motivates her.

“I was already mad … and it just kept flowing,” Howard said of her 43-point performance. “There was some words said on the other end so it just kept me going … They need to put some respect on my name.”

The Dream and Sky will play for the second time this season.

In the first meeting May 30 at Atlanta, the Dream won 83-65 behind 20 points from Howard. Dana Evans scored 11 points for the Sky.

Mystics, Fever clash in first game since trade

The Indiana Fever and Washington Mystics made a trade on Tuesday. On Friday night, when the teams meet in Washington, they’ll get an early chance to see how it works out.

Indiana dealt second-year post Queen Egbo to the Mystics in exchange for veteran center Amanda Zahui B., giving the Fever much-needed experience while providing Washington with immediate help inside amid injuries.

The Mystics (9-7) are without center Shakira Austin (hip) for at least two more weeks and lost their star forward, Elena Delle Donne, to an ankle injury on June 30. Already ninth in the 12-team WNBA in rebounding, Washington needs Egbo’s physical presence to shore up a present weakness.

“Queen’s a young post player with a lot of upside,” Mystics coach Eric Thibault said. “The things that jumped out right away are her rebounding and rim protection. We kind of needed that person that could come in and get some rebounds and anchor us a little bit defensively.”

Washington hasn’t played since an 89-72 loss Sunday in Dallas, where it allowed 42 points in the paint. A 30-point third quarter by the Wings doomed them.

Meanwhile, the Fever (5-12) dropped their fifth straight game Wednesday night at Minnesota to the Lynx, 90-83. Defense has been the issue of late for Indiana, which has allowed 90.6 points per game during their slide.

The acquisition of Zahui B. not only adds an older player to the roster but also offers more versatility. Zahui B. is more of a stretch five, capable of making 3-pointers, and could open up the lane for new teammates Aliyah Boston and NaLyssa Smith.

“Amanda’s versatility and ability to play the 4 and 5 spot make her a great addition,” Fever general manager Lin Dunn said.

Boston and Smith combined for 40 points and 20 rebounds in the defeat at Minnesota. Boston, who will join teammate Kelsey Mitchell in the All-Star Game next weekend, was named WNBA Rookie of the Month.

Indiana walloped Washington 87-66 last month in the teams’ first meeting of the season.

Report: Jeff Van Gundy eyes return to coaching

Jeff Van Gundy is exploring a return to coaching after being laid off as a top analyst by ESPN last week, Sports Illustrated reported Thursday.

Van Gundy hasn’t coached in the NBA since 2007, the same year he joined ESPN. He was among the on-air staff dropped by the network in a cost-cutting move.

Van Gundy “has been actively exploring a return to coaching” in an assistant role, per the report. Further, he had discussions with the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics before they added staff, leaving coach Wes Unseld Jr.’s staff with the Washington Wizards as a possible landing spot, per SI.

Van Gundy, 61, has a 430-318 career record as head coach of the New York Knicks (1995-2002) and Houston Rockets (2003-07). His teams went 44-44 in the playoffs, and he led the Knicks to the Eastern Conference championship in 1999. The San Antonio Spurs defeated New York in five games to win the NBA title.

Thunder make deals for Davis Bertans, Victor Oladipo

The Oklahoma City Thunder acquired forward Davis Bertans and guard Victor Oladipo in separate deals Thursday.

Bertans arrives from the Dallas Mavericks along with 2023 No. 10 overall draft pick Cason Wallace in exchange for No. 12 pick overall Dereck Lively II.

A two-time All-Star, Oladipo arrives from the Miami Heat along with second-round draft picks in 2029 and 2030 in exchange for cash considerations.

Bertans, 30, has career averages of 7.8 points and 2.5 rebounds in 432 games (40 starts) for the San Antonio Spurs, Washington Wizards and Mavs. He’s a career 39.8 percent shooter from the 3-point line.

Oladipo, 31, previously played for the Thunder in 2016-17. He has career averages of 16.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 504 games (397 starts) with the Orlando Magic, Thunder, Indiana Pacers, Houston Rockets and Heat.

Wallace, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard, averaged 11.7 points, 4.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 32 games in his lone season at Kentucky in 2022-23.

Lively, a 7-1 center, averaged 5.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in 34 games in his only season at Duke.

Blazers match Mavs’ $33M offer, keep Matisse Thybulle

Restricted free agent forward Matisse Thybulle is staying in Portland after the Trail Blazers matched a $33 million offer sheet he signed with the Dallas Mavericks.

Thybulle, 26, was acquired in a trade deadline deal in February and signed the offer sheet with Dallas on Thursday, the first day free agents are permitted to sign official contracts.

Portland’s rollercoaster offseason has included drafting point guard Scoot Henderson with the No. 3 pick in the 2023 draft, sparking a trade demand from franchise centerpiece Damian Lillard, and a five-year, $160 million deal to bring back free agent Jerami Grant.

Grant, 29, averaged 20.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 63 games (all starts) last season.

Thybulle, a defensive stopper, averaged 4.1 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 71 games last season between the Philadelphia 76ers and Trail Blazers.

Thybulle contributed 4.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assists in 267 career games (100 starts) with the 76ers and Trail Blazers.

MLB News: Tigers RHP Alex Faedo to rejoin rotation on Friday

Detroit Tigers right-hander Alex Faedo will come off the injured list to start Friday against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays, manager A.J. Hinch said Thursday.

Faedo, 27, has not pitched since May 30 due to discomfort in his right middle finger.

He is 1-3 with a 5.54 ERA in five starts this season, striking out 26 batters and walking only two in 26 innings.

A first-round pick by Detroit in 2017, Faedo made his major league debut in 2022 and went 1-5 with a 5.53 ERA in 12 starts.
