NHL News: Knights hope for continued success on dads’ trip to Minnesota

After sputtering into their bye week and the All-Star break, the Vegas Golden Knights pulled out their secret weapon.

Their dads.

The Knights, who had lost four in a row on the road and seven of their eight previous games, returned from their nine-day break with a 5-1 victory at Nashville on Tuesday in the first half of their two-game dads trip.

The Golden Knights, who moved back into first place in the tightly bunched Pacific Division with the victory while also improving to 6-0-1 all-time in dads trip games, will try to keep that point streak in front of their fathers alive when they face the Minnesota Wild on Thursday in Saint Paul, Minn.

“It’s big,” forward William Carrier, who had a goal and an assist in the win over the Predators, said of having the fathers along on the trip. “It’s great to have them around. It just makes the energy level go high. It’s great to have them here, especially this road trip. Nashville and Minnesota are tough barns.”

Vegas dominated the win over the Predators, holding Nashville to just six shots on goal in the first 49 minutes, including only two in the second period. Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill ended up with 16 saves.

“I liked where our mindset was,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “I thought all our lines were ready to go. Our (defense) was engaged. They were holding their gaps.”

Vegas finished with 12 takeaways, 16 blocked shots and just four giveaways.

“We managed pucks well for most of the night,” Cassidy said. “Our giveaways were really low and our takeaways were high. Usually that means you are taking care of the puck in the neutral zone.”

Hill added, “I thought we had a great game. (On) plays where pucks were hitting bodies in front, we always got our stick there first. We always had the right body position in front of the net and our guys did a phenomenal job. We had a lot of blocked shots tonight, so that paid off.”

While the Golden Knights spent Wednesday holding a curling tournament with their fathers in Saint Paul, the Wild dropped their second road game in three nights, falling 4-1 to the Dallas Stars.

It was the fifth loss in the past seven games for Minnesota, which slipped out of third place in the Central Division and into the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

The good news for the Wild is they play their next seven games at the Xcel Energy Center, where they are 7-0-2 all-time against the Golden Knights, including a 3-0 win last season.

Minnesota, which blew a 2-1, third-period lead in a 3-2 loss at Arizona on Monday, fell behind 3-0 midway through the second period at Dallas before Joel Eriksson Ek scored a power-play goal with 1:44 to go in the middle frame. Roope Hintz sealed the win for the Stars, who got 38 saves from Jake Oettinger, with an empty-netter.

“We just didn’t find a way to score,” Wild coach Dean Evason said. “We’re doing a lot of real good things. A lot of positives in this hockey game. We have to obviously stay as positive as we can. We play (Thursday) night.”

Minnesota defenseman Jake Middleton added, “We’re pissed. There’s really no other way to put it at this point. We know we’re not in that third spot anymore and the coming weeks are pretty important. We have to play desperate for the next stretch here.”

NHL News: Trade principals set to face ex-teams as Isles, Canucks clash

Bo Horvat and Anthony Beauvillier, the key figures in a Jan. 30 trade between the New York Islanders and the Vancouver Canucks, will face off against their former teams on Thursday in Elmont, N.Y.

The Islanders were off on Wednesday after earning their fourth straight win on Tuesday, a 4-0 victory over the visiting Seattle Kraken in which Horvat scored his first goal with his new team.

The Canucks will be completing a back-to-back road set after falling to the New York Rangers 4-3 on Wednesday night.

The game against familiar faces will cap a frenetic 11-day stretch for Horvat and Beauvillier. The deal sent Horvat to New York in exchange for Beauvillier, Aatu Raty and a protected 2023 first-round pick.

Horvat, who was named one of the Canucks’ representatives to the All-Star Game, was in Florida with his family and played for the Pacific Division in a 6-4 loss to the Central Division on Saturday.

“A little bit in shock and it’s been a big whirlwind for me right now and my family,” Horvat said Jan. 30. The center spent the first eight-plus years of his career with the Canucks, who named him captain in 2019.

Horvat, 27, joined the Islanders on Sunday and signed an eight-year extension worth a reported $68 million immediately after his first practice. He made his Islanders debut Monday, when he joined the top line and played 19:08 in a 2-1 win over the host Philadelphia Flyers.

On Tuesday night, Horvat was serenaded with chants of “HOR-VAT” upon scoring the Islanders’ final goal early in the second period. The four goals were the most amassed by New York since a 6-2 win over the Canucks on Jan. 3 — when Horvat scored both Vancouver goals.

“I think I took a deep breath after that one,” Horvat said. “It definitely felt good.”

Beauvillier was also on vacation when news of the trade broke. He cut the trip short to return to Long Island and pack up his belongings, but he ended up seeing a lot of ex-teammates at the Islanders’ practice facility.

“I thought it was going to be the right thing to do and it ended up being like a three-day goodbye,” Beauvillier told AM NY following the Canucks’ morning skate on Wednesday.

Like Horvat, Beauvillier — who is 25 years old but has 102 goals in 459 NHL games — immediately joined the first line with his new team, though he has yet to collect a point in two games for the retooling Canucks.

Vancouver, which returned from the All-Star break with a 5-4 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils on Monday night, went 4-11-0 in the final 15 games of the first half. On Jan. 22, the Canucks replaced head coach Bruce Boudreau with Rick Tocchet.

“A lot of nerves,” Beauvillier said, according to Newsday, following the Canucks’ practice on Tuesday. “I’m so happy I got my first game and first couple of practices out of the way. It feels like it was my first practice of my first NHL training camp.”

CALLOFDUTY News: iLLeY, Texas OpTic split

Indervir “iLLeY” Dhaliwal, a member of the OpTic Texas Call of Duty roster, announced he is a free agent.

“Restricted F/A, bang my line if you want to win,” he tweeted late Wednesday.

The organization has yet to announce a move.

iLLeY, a 21-year-old Canadian, won a world championship with the Dallas Empire in 2020. Following a November 2021 merger with OpTic Gaming, the team became OpTic Texas.

He joined the Empire in October 2019.

The move comes after OpTic Texas finished in fourth place at the CDL Major II last week.

This is the second recent roster change for OpTic Texas, which lost veteran Seth “Scump” Abner to retirement last month.

Remaining roster members are Anthony “Shotzzy” Cuevas-Castro, Cuyler “Huke” Garland and Brandon “Dashy” Otell.

The season opened in December with the Major II, and the team was eliminated in the group stage.

What to Expect From GLOBALFOUNDRIES Upcoming Q4 Results?

0

Deutsche Bank provided its outlook on GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. (NASDAQ:GFS) ahead of the upcoming Q4/22 results announcement.
Despite rising demand weakness/macro headwinds, the analysts believe the company should deliver a solid, approximately in-line Q4, benefitting from a fully booked 2022, backed by fixed/favorably priced long-term agreements.
Looking into fiscal 2023, analysts anticipate that the company should reach its cyclical bottom at some point in the first half of the year, reflecting the trough of the handset market. Taking the year as a whole, the analysts expect the company to be fairly resilient, despite expected weakness in its handset and PC-oriented segments as higher pricing in H2/23 and secure long-term agreements should enable the company to endure the tough macro environment.

Fiserv Shares Surge 8 percent Following Q4 Results

0

Fiserv Inc (NASDAQ:FISV) shares gained more than 8% yesterday after the company reported its Q4 results, with EPS of $1.91, in-line with expectations, and revenue of $4.36 billion, slightly better than the consensus estimate of $4.35 billion.
The company provided its fiscal 2023 outlook, expecting EPS to be in the range of $7.25-$7.40, compared to the consensus estimate of $7.28.
According to the analysts at Deutsche Bank, much of the credit for the robust quarter, past 18-month results and solid 2023 guidance needs to be given to CEO Frank Bisignano for changing the organic revenue growth of the company to sustainable higher levels.
Given solid continued execution and the expectation for a 38th consecutive year of double-digit EPS growth, the analysts believe the company is deserving of the premium it trades at vs peers. Based on the updated outlook, the analysts raised their 2023/2024 EPS by $0.16/$0.24 to $7.29/$8.10 and introduced a 2025 EPS of $8.99.

No. 25 San Diego State ekes out win at Utah State

Matt Bradley had 18 points and three steals as No. 25 San Diego State held on for a 63-61 win over Utah State in a Mountain West Conference game on Wednesday in Logan, Utah.

Jaedon LeDee had 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench and Micah Parrish contributed 12 points in a reserve role for the Aztecs (19-5, 10-2 MWC), who stretched their lead to one game over second-place Nevada in the conference standings.

Steven Ashworth had 18 points and six assists while Taylor Funk had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Aggies (19-6, 8-4), who could have moved into a tie for first with a victory.

Utah State, which came into the day as the top 3-point shooting team in the nation at 41.8 percent, shot 5 of 19 (26.3 percent) from beyond the arc for the game.

The Aggies trailed by 16 points at the half and by 10 with five minutes left.

Funk scored on a fastbreak to make it 62-59 with 1:52 to go, and Dan Akin continued the 9-0 run with two free throws with a minute remaining to make it a one-point game.

Bradley missed on a drive with 24 seconds left and LeDee couldn’t convert the tip, but Utah State’s Max Shulga missed a jumper with four seconds to go. San Diego State’s Keshad Johnson grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws with 1.8 seconds left.

The Aztecs were leading 27-17 with 6:49 remaining in the half when a scuffle broke out as the teams headed to their benches for a timeout.

San Diego State point guard and second-leading scorer Darrion Trammell was ejected for leaving the bench, as were two walk-on players and an assistant coach for Utah State.

The Aggies quickly cut the deficit to six, but the Aztecs eventually took a 44-28 lead into the break.

The Aggies scored the first six points of the second half to slice their deficit to single digits, and an 8-0 run pulled them within 56-51 with 10:30 left after a layup by Sean Bairstow.

Utah State didn’t make another field goal until Ashworth rolled in a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 62-55 with 4:41 to play.

No. 14 Baylor dumps Oklahoma, wins 8th game in past 9

Keyonte George scored 23 points and Adam Flagler added 20 to help No. 14 Baylor to an 82-72 victory over Oklahoma on Wednesday in Waco, Texas.

The Bears (18-6, 7-4 Big 12) have won eight of their past nine games, while the Sooners (12-12, 2-9) have dropped six consecutive conference games and nine of their past 12 overall.

Baylor led by nine late in the first half, but the Sooners fought back early in the second half with a 13-4 run to take their first lead since the early stages on Tanner Groves’ jumper with just less than 14 minutes remaining.

But then Flagler and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua helped put the Bears back in control.

Flagler bookended Baylor’s 14-6 run with field goals, including a 3-pointer to wrap up the stretch.

Tchamwa Tchatchoua, the 6-foot-8 forward who was playing just his second game of the season after making his return from last season’s devastating knee injury, drained a pair of 3-pointers in the stretch, including one moments after Oklahoma’s Milos Uzan had cut Baylor’s lead to one point with a trey with 10 minutes remaining.

Tchamwa Tchatchoua had made just six career 3-pointers in 85 career games in his first three college seasons but has four in his first two games this season.

After George carried the load in the first half, scoring 15, Flagler controlled much of the second half, scoring 14. Langston Love finished with 19 points off the bench for Baylor.

Sooners coach Porter Moser continued to tinker with his lineup, inserting freshman Otega Oweh into the starting lineup for the first time this season, and using transfer Joseph Bamisile in an expanded role for the second consecutive game.

Oweh tied season highs with 10 points and six rebounds, while Bamisile had 10 points and a season-high seven rebounds in 18 minutes.

Grant Sherfield led the Sooners with 15 points.

While Baylor was 19 of 26 from the free-throw line, Oklahoma was just 6 for 12. The Sooners had made just two free throws before the final 3:16.

Baylor’s LJ Cryer sustained a leg injury in the first half and did not return.

No. 3 Alabama rolls over Florida, stays undefeated in SEC

Brandon Miller poured in 24 points as the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide roared past the Florida Gators 97-69 Wednesday night in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to stay perfect in the Southeastern Conference.

The nation’s top-scoring freshman, Miller went 9 of 17, including 4 of 8 on 3-pointers, and had nine rebounds as the Crimson Tide (21-3, 11-0 SEC) led by 29 points at the half and improved to 12-0 at home.

The 21-3 start matches the best in school history, equaling the first 24 games of the 1975-76 season. Alabama improved to 11-0 in the SEC to start a season for just the second time ever (1955-56).

It won its third straight meeting against the Gators but only for the fifth time in the past 20 games dating back to the 2008-09 season.

Lead guard Mark Sears scored 19 points and made 4 of 6 from long range. Jahvon Quinerly had 11 points and five assists.

Alabama made 15 of 34 (44.1 percent) from deep and held a 29-12 edge in bench points.

The Gators (13-11, 6-5) cut the deficit to 17 in the second half but lost for the third time in four outings. Colin Castleton had 29 points and 10 rebounds. Riley Kugel added 15 points and six boards. Will Richard scored 11.

On a tough shooting night, Florida was successful on just 34.9 percent (22 of 63) of its shots.

In their only regular-season matchup against Florida, the Crimson Tide got the start they needed behind hot shooting and strong defense. They made 4 of 5 field goals and both 3-pointers to lead 10-2 just three minutes in.

Meanwhile, the Gators struggled to find any offense and fell behind due to the home side’s 12-2 run. In the first 10 minutes, Castleton had some success and led with five points, but they made just 4 of 14 shots and trailed 29-11 as the contest began to slip away.

At 6:16 of the half, Alabama’s Jaden Bradley drove the lane and deftly fed a pass to the corner to Rylan Griffen, who drilled a trey to give the squad a 40-15 lead. Miller hit a pair of 3s to make it 50-21, and Sears’ drive and layup at the buzzer made it 52-23 at the break.
