NHL News: After ‘needed’ break, streaking Hurricanes face Blackhawks

The Carolina Hurricanes are the hottest team in the NHL.

Yet they welcomed the weekend break. But now they’re getting set to return to action with their franchise-record 14-game points streak, taking on the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night in Raleigh, N.C.

“It’s a grind. It’s a long season,” said Carolina center Sebastian Aho, who recently returned from a lower-body injury. “These short breaks are definitely going to feel good. We’ve earned it.”

The Hurricanes have won eight games in a row for the longest active winning streak in the NHL. No. 8 came with Friday night’s 6-5 home victory against the Philadelphia Flyers before three days without a game.

“We needed a break,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “We’ve pushed hard. Everybody needed a mental break here.”

A ninth consecutive victory would match the most recent nine-game winning streak for the Hurricanes; it came at the beginning of the 2021-22 season.

The Blackhawks have been in an opposite situation. They snapped an eight-game losing streak Friday by winning the finale of a three-game homestand, a 5-2 decision against Columbus.

“There’s no replacing finding that success,” Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said. “Now, going forward, we have to consciously make that decision every time we go on the ice that we’ll build off that. Remember that feeling … use that confidence and work our way out of it.”

The Blackhawks had goalie Alex Stalock back in action for the first time since Nov. 1 as he posted the victory in the Columbus game.

“I got to get into it and got back up to speed,” said Stalock, who had been out with a concussion.

That win could earn him another start, particularly with the break preventing any sort of quick turnaround. If not, the Blackhawks will have ex-Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek available in the nets.

Even though Aho didn’t register a point on any of the goals in Carolina’s victory against Philadelphia, the team was encouraged to have him back following a seven-game absence because of his injury.

“I don’t think he was on his best, but we need him,” Brind’Amour said. “You’ve got your best player, you’re going to put him in when he says he’s ready to play. I think it’s going to take him a few games to get back to feeling good again.”

Aho has 27 points in 27 games this season. He said he felt good to have a chance to contribute again while acknowledging that the Hurricanes have been cruising even during his layoff.

“It felt awesome. I was anxious to get back,” he said. “Just battling with the guys. They’ve been doing an awesome job without me. I have to thank the guys for hanging in there.”

Carolina allowed three third-period goals to the Flyers but seemed unfazed by the close encounter. The Hurricanes were fortunate to hold a four-goal edge before the Flyers perked up.

“Flush that third period and take the positives of whatever the last 14 games have been,” Carolina forward Jordan Martinook said. “Going into the break on a high.”

Chicago forward Max Domi will be back in Raleigh for his first game since he was a trade-deadline addition to the Hurricanes last season.

Movie Review: War on the Diamond (9/10)

War on the Diamond (9/10)

90 minutes.

NR.

Prime.

As a lifelong rabid baseball fan, I of course knew who Ray Chapman was. He was a 29 year old shortstop for the Cleveland Indians who was killed when hit in the head by a pitch by Carl Mays of the Yankees in 1920 at the Polo Grounds in New York. But that was all I knew about him.

This fascinating documentary tells the story of Chapman combined with a history of the rivalry between the Indians and the New York Yankees over the years. But the rivalry takes second place to the story of Chapman, who was a lovable, extremely popular player who had a storybook marriage with a beautiful woman from a wealthy family. At the time he was hit he was batting .303 and in the middle of his best year, a pennant-winning and World Series-winning (over the Dodgers) one for the Indians.

Directed by Andy Billman and based on the book “The Pitch that Killed” by Mike Sowell, this contains archival footage and interviews with a plethora of people, including Lesley Visser, Senator Sherrod Brown, and players like Jim Abbott and Sandy Alomar. It also includes archival sound bites from Carl Mays himself and George Steinbrenner, the volatile Yankees’ owner from 1973-2010, Chapman’s sister, Terry Francona, Bob Feller,  and others.

It also shows the various parks which the Indians have called home, League Park, which was apparently small and beloved, Cleveland Stadium, which was big and cold and wasn’t, and Jacobs Field aka Progressive Field.

There are a few glitches. One is where someone describes the aura of the Yankees of the ‘30s and mentions Joe DiMaggio as “married to a movie star.” DiMag didn’t marry Marilyn Monroe until 1952, a year after he retired. Another describes one of DiMag’s nicknames as “Splendid Splinter.” Sorry, but that was what people called Ted Williams. Maybe someone sometime referred to Joe that way but anytime anyone who knows anything about baseball hears “Splendid Splinter,” it’s Ted Williams who comes to mind. It’s a little unsettling when a good documentary is despoiled by basic errors of fact, calling into question its credibility.

Regardless, I think they got most of it right and it certainly, finally, brought Ray Chapman’s character into the foreground and why his funeral in Cleveland was overflowing standing room only. Whether you are a baseball fan or not, this is a compelling story.

Two Republican Senators criticize McConnell and other GOP members for bipartisan support of omnibus package

0

On Sunday, two Republican senators slammed their leader Mitch McConnell and other senate colleagues for the bipartisan support they had given to the $1.7 trillion omnibus package that was passed by Congress and sent to the desk of President Joe Biden, on Friday.

Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other GOP senators helped the Senate to pass the huge spending bill, on Thursday. A total of 18 senators from the Republican Party voted in favor of the massive $1.7 trillion package, along with the Democrats. It was passed by the House, on Friday. This legislation is expected to provide funds for the federal government through September 2023.

Congresspersons across party lines favored the bill as it increased defense spending for 2023. The amount that has been locked in for defense spending in 2023 as per the bill is $858 billion. This is an increase of 9.7 percent, when compared with 2022. The bill also kept non defense spending increases at a rate below inflation.

Despite the bipartisan support, some Senate Republicans were unhappy that their party colleagues offered bipartisan support. Two of these senators: Ron Johnson from Wisconsin and Mike Lee from Utah denounced their leader Mitch McConnell and their GOP colleagues during an interview that was conducted, on Sunday by John Catsimatidis, a radio talk show host.

Appearing on “The Cats Roundtable” on WABC 770, Sen. Mike Lee said that the party leadership had turned on several including its Republic voters, its Republican base and most of its GOP senators. He called it the “final straw” and more.

The senator from Wisconsin also joined his colleague on the show comparing the vote with football. He said that the Republicans calling increased defense spending a win was “like a football team that just lost the game 60 to 0, and they kick a field goal in the waning seconds and say the field goal is a big win.”

Sen. Ron Johnson added that the Senate could have waited for the GOP House Leader McCarthy to take lead in the House early next year, instead of passing the bill at this point of time.

Southwest cancels 60% of flights amid weather chaos across the US. 27 reported dead in Buffalo snowstorm

At least 27 people have died as a result of this weekend’s winter storm in the greater Buffalo area alone, according to law enforcement agencies on Monday. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said late Monday afternoon that the county medical examiner has confirmed a total of 27 storm-related deaths in the county. And Niagara County on Sunday reported one confirmed storm death: A 27-year-old Lockport man who was pronounced dead Sunday from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning., reported The Buffalo News.

At least 49 deaths nationally have occurred due to the storm that devastated a large portion of the nation. The day after Christmas, flights are still being cancelled. From Wednesday through Saturday flight tracker, FlightAware reports over 15 % of flight in the US have been cancelled. At least 12,000 flights have been cancelled since the storm started.

Southwest cancelled 60% of flights  due to one of the worst winter storms across the USA in history. Call centers are having a hard time taking in all the calls. Peoples nerves are on end. Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said in a message to staff on Sunday. “We’ve talked an awful lot about modernizing the operation, and the need to do that. And Crew Scheduling is one of the places that we need to invest in. We need to be able to produce solutions faster.” “Part of what we’re suffering is a lack of tools,”

Passengers should be aware that airlines do not guarantee their timetables when making travel arrangements. Although airlines strive to deliver passengers to their destinations on time, a number of factors can  delay flights. Many  challenges, such as inclement weather, air traffic delays, and technical problems, are difficult to anticipate and frequently out of the airlines’ control. Fans are upset.

Airlines are not compelled to provide compensation to passengers in the US when a flight is delayed or canceled. U.S. law only mandates compensation when specific passengers are “bumped” from an overbooked flight.

Only flights that travel to, from, or within the United States are subject to the Department’s regulations on flight delays and cancellations. The laws of another country outside the US may provide protection against aircraft delays and cancellations for travelers traveling between or within other countries. Check with your airline about specific terms and conditions.

Fourth Power Substation in Washington State Vandalized, Leaves 14K Without Power

After burglars vandalized three energy substations in Pierce County, Washington, on Sunday, power was knocked out for even more homes after a suspect or suspects entered a fourth substation, vandalized the equipment, and caused a fire, according to an update from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

According to police, the damaged equipment cut power to approximately 14,000 customers, weeks after an attack in North Carolina left thousands without power for days, despite federal warnings of extremist threats to electricity infrastructure.

The Christmas Day vandalism near Tacoma was one of several in the state, with the FBI investigating two November attacks on Puget Sound Energy substations. Vandalism and intentional damage were reported at substations in southern Washington and Oregon last month.

There are no suspects in the latest case affecting Puyallup and Graham, Washington, and it is not known if there had been any motive or if the incident was a coordinated attack on the power systems, according to a statement issued by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department on Sunday.

The FBI’s Seattle Division was aware of the vandalism reports but would not confirm or deny its involvement in any investigation, saying only that they did take threats against their infrastructure seriously and urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement. According to the alert sent to private industry, the bureau warned of reports of threats to electricity infrastructure by people espousing racially or ethnically motivated extremist ideology “to create civil disorder and inspire further violence” in a bulletin on November 22.

Tacoma Public Utilities stated on Monday that all customers should have power restored by the afternoon. Two electrical substations were shot up earlier this month in North Carolina, causing tens of thousands of customers to lose power and prompting local officials to declare a state of emergency. No one was arrested as a result of the attacks.

The sheriff’s office said the first report of a burglary at a Tacoma Public Utilities substation came at 5:26 a.m. PT. Then, according to the statement, a second burglary was reported at another Tacoma Public Utilities substation, with forced entry and equipment damage. Likewise, nothing was taken. Then, according to the statement, a second burglary was reported at another Tacoma Public Utilities substation, with forced entry and equipment damage. Likewise, nothing was taken at both stations.

Ben Mogen, the grieving father of the Idaho murders victim Maddie Mogen, says he is convinced the quadruple murderer made a mistake at the scene that will lead to his capture and admits he is surprised he is “still waiting” for answers.

Maddie Mogen, the grieving father of the Idaho victim, says he’s convinced the killer made a mistake at the scene that will lead to his capture, but he’s surprised he’s “still waiting” for answers.

As the case entered its sixth week, Mogen said that he has always known that people do not get away with murder these days. There were just too many things one can get caught up in, like videos and DNA everywhere. This is not something that people can get away with if it is not resolved. Mogen meanwhile continues to deal with the pain of losing his 21-year-old daughter whom he described as “smart, funny and very entrepreneurial”.

Maddie, along with her best friend Kaylee Goncalves, her roommate Xana Kernodle, and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, was stabbed to death in the early morning hours of November 13 at her off-campus home near the University of Idaho campus.

Investigators spoke with Mogen for three hours on the day of his daughter’s vigil, he said. He expressed gratitude for everything they’ve done so far, but he still has many unanswered questions because his daughter’s killer has yet to be identified. According to the bereaved father, one of the lead investigators is in constant contact with him.

He said he appreciates the frequent updates, especially given all of the online speculation, gossip, and misinformation that he describes as “hurtful.” However, he also expressed gratitude that investigators can draw on the resources of the entire country, particularly the FBI, and that they are working around the clock, including holidays, to find those responsible so that her daughter can receive justice.

Mogen, who is distraught, stated that he is just trying to get through each day. This is their close-knit family’s first Christmas without Maddie. He said a memorial service would be held to remember his daughter, whom he described as “inspiring.”

Charlotte FC completed the sale of striker Daniel Rios to Liga MX side C.D. Guadalajara for an undisclosed fee.

The MLS club announced the permanent transfer on Sunday.

Rios, who joined Charlotte from Nashville SC in February, had seven goals and two assists in 27 matches (15 starts) during the club’s inaugural MLS campaign.

The 27-year-old Mexico native scored all four of Charlotte’s goals in a 4-0 win against the Philadelphia Union on Oct. 1.

“It was a pleasure to see Dani’s skills evolve throughout the year and make a strong impact on the field late in the season which is a testament to the type of player development we’re building at Charlotte FC,” sporting director Zoran Krneta said. “Everyone at the Club thanks Dani for his time at CLTFC and wishes him all the best upon the return to his former club.”
