MLS News: Columbus to host 2024 MLS All-Star Game

0

The 2024 Major League Soccer All-Star Game will be contested at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio.

Columbus hosted MLS’ midsummer showcase event on two previous occasions (2000, 2005).

“We are pleased to award the 2024 MLS All-Star Game to Columbus, the third MLS All-Star Game for this terrific soccer city,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said Wednesday. “In just over three years, the Haslams (Dee and Jimmy, who own both the Crew and the NFL’s Cleveland Browns) and their partners have built one of the world’s best soccer stadiums, revitalized the club, and expanded the Crew fanbase. Columbus and Lower.com Field will be a tremendous host for the MLS All-Star Game and festivities.”

The MLS All-Stars will face Arsenal of the English Premier League in the 2023 All-Star Game on July 19 at Audi Field in Washington. An opponent has yet to be named for the 2024 event, however.

The Haslams said they already are looking forward to hosting the 2024 MLS All-Star Game.

“In everything we do, the Crew are dedicated to excellence on the pitch, creating engaging experiences and memories for our supporters and serving as leaders in the community, and hosting the 2024 MLS All-Star Game clearly accomplishes all of those goals,” the Haslams said in a statement. “The week-long celebration of soccer at all levels of play is an exceptional opportunity to showcase Lower.com Field, which provides one of the best atmospheres in all of sports and entertainment, the incredible hospitality and growth of the City of Columbus and our passionate fans.”

CONCACAF News: Gold Cup roundup: 2nd-half goals lift Panama over Martinique

0

Second-half goals from Jose Fajardo and Michael Amir Murillo led Panama to a 2-1 win over Martinique on Friday in Group C play at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Harrison, N.J.

Panama (2-0-0, 6 points) clinched a quarterfinal berth later Friday night when El Salvador (0-1-1, 1 point) and Costa Rica (0-1-1, 1 point) played to a scoreless draw. The Canal Men would finish atop the group if they beat El Salvador on Sunday in Houston.

Martinique (1-1-0, 3 points) would advance with a victory over Costa Rica on Sunday in Harrison.

The game’s first goal came in the 57th minute. Panama’s Eric Davis delivered a cross from the left flank, and an unmarked Fajardo headed it in.

Twelve minutes later, Panama doubled the advantage. Alberto Quintero chipped the ball over the Martinique defense, and Murillo knocked a right-footed shot over the head of goalie Theo De Percin.

Karl Fabien got a consolation goal for Martinique in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.

In the late game at Harrison, El Salvador goalie Mario Gonzalez made three saves and Costa Rica’s Kevin Chamorro stopped two shots as the teams failed to score. Costa Rica had 52.4 percent of the ball possession and a 12-9 edge in total shots.

CONCACAF News: Gold Cup: Demarai Gray’s birthday brace sends Jamaica past T&T

0

Demarai Gray scored a first-half brace on his 26th birthday and Jamaica cruised to a 4-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago in a CONCACAF Gold Cup match at St. Louis on Wednesday.

The result leaves Jamaica (1-0-1, 4 points) in second place in the Group A standings behind the United States (1-0-1, 4 points), which posted a 6-0 defeat of Saint Kitts and Nevis (0-2-0, 0 points) later on Wednesday in St. Louis. The U.S. team is in first place due to a superior goal differential.

Trinidad and Tobago (1-1-0, 3 points) had won its opener against Saint Kitts and Nevis on Sunday.

The top two teams in each of the four groups advance to the quarterfinals.

Leon Bailey assisted Gray for a 12-yard, right-footed goal in the 14th minute.

Three minutes later, Bailey broke in one-on-one with Trinidad and Tobago goalie Nicklas Frenderup and fired home a left-footed strike that was originally ruled out for offside. However, a video review showed Bailey was onside, and the goal stood.

Gray, who just joined the Jamaican team for this event after playing for his native England at the youth level, scored again in the 29th minute. Michail Antonio went to the ground in the penalty area but kept control of the ball and sent it to Gray, who tapped it into a wide-open net.

Andre Rampersad got a consolation goal for Trinidad and Tobago in the 49th minute, and Jamaica’s Dujuan Richards scored in second-half stoppage time.

Jamaica concludes group play against Saint Kitts and Nevis on Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif. The same day, Trinidad and Tobago will oppose the United States in Charlotte.

Churchill Downs extends Bob Baffert suspension through 2024

0

Churchill Downs Incorporated is extending the suspension for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert through the end of 2024, the company announced Monday.

The parent company of Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., claimed that Baffert poses a “threat to the safety and integrity of racing” at its tracks. The ruling means that Baffert-trained horses will be ineligible for the 2024 Kentucky Derby.

Baffert’s suspension stems from the disqualification of Medina Spirit after the horse crossed the finish line first at the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Medina Spirit failed a drug test after the race, testing positive for the steroid betamethasone.

“Mr. Baffert continues to peddle a false narrative concerning the failed drug test of Medina Spirit at the 147th Kentucky Derby from which his horse was disqualified by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission in accordance with Kentucky law and regulations,” CDI said in a news release. “Prior to that race, Mr. Baffert signed an agreement with Churchill Downs which stated that he was responsible for understanding the rules of racing in Kentucky and that he would abide by them.

“The results of the tests clearly show that he did not comply, and his ongoing conduct reveals his continued disregard for the rules and regulations that ensure horse and jockey safety, as well as the integrity and fairness of the races conducted at our facilities.

“A trainer who is unwilling to accept responsibility for multiple drug test failures in our highest-profile races cannot be trusted to avoid future misconduct.”

CDI’s statement said that it would re-evaluate Baffert’s status after 2024.

Baffert had no immediate comment.

Baffert also served a suspension from the New York Racing Association for multiple medication violations. Initially a two-year ban, it was reduced to one year in 2022.

Baffert, 69, has produced six Kentucky Derby winners — Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998), War Emblem (2002), American Pharoah (2015), Justify (2018) and Authentic (2020). American Pharoah and Justify also won the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes to win the Triple Crown.

NHL News: Canadiens acquire Alex Newhook from Avs for 2 draft picks

The Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Alex Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday in exchange for a first- and second-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and defenseman Gianni Fairbrother.

The Avalanche picked up the 31st and 37th picks in the draft, which begins Wednesday in Nashville, Tenn.

Fairbrother, 22, sat out all of last season due to a knee injury. The Vancouver, British Columbia, native has yet to make his NHL debut since being selected by the Canadiens in the third round (77th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft.

NHL News: Flyers trade F Kevin Hayes to Blues

The Philadelphia Flyers traded forward Kevin Hayes to the St. Louis Blues for a 2024 sixth-round draft pick on Tuesday.

The Flyers will retain 50 percent of Hayes’ salary on the remaining three seasons of his contract, the team announced.

Each team will incur a cap hit of roughly $3.57 million in 2023-24. Hayes signed a seven-year, $50 million extension with Philadelphia in July 2019.

Hayes, 31, tallied 54 points (18 goals 36 assists) in 81 games this past season, his fourth in Philadelphia.

The former first-round pick (No. 24 overall in 2010) has 386 points (155 goals, 231 assists) in 634 career games with the New York Rangers (2014-19), Winnipeg (2019) and Flyers.

The Flyers acquired Hayes from Winnipeg in June 2019.

NHL News: Senators GM: D.J. Smith, coaching staff to return for 2023-24

Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said Tuesday that head coach D.J. Smith and his entire coaching staff will be back for the 2023-24 season.

The announcement comes two weeks after a change of ownership. New majority owner Michael Andlauer accepted Dorion’s recommendation to bring back Smith, who has not made the playoffs in his four-year tenure in Ottawa.

“In dealing with Michael, he said the general manager runs the hockey operations and he decides the coach and my recommendation was for D.J. and his staff to be back,” Dorion said in Nashville, Tenn., site of Wednesday’s draft.

Dorion also said he’s trying to trade forward Alex DeBrincat ahead of the draft after just one season. DeBrincat, a restricted free agent, hasn’t asked for a trade but has declined to sign a long-term deal with the club.

The Senators acquired DeBrincat from Chicago last July.

DeBrincat tallied 66 points (27 goals, 39 assists) in 82 games for the Sens last season. He has 373 points (187 goals, 186 assists) in 450 career games.

The Senators missed out on the playoffs by six points this past season, going 39-35-8.

Smith is 120-139-32 in four seasons.

NHL News: Blackhawks sign F Nick Foligno to 1-year contract

The Chicago Blackhawks signed newly acquired forward Nick Foligno to a one-year contract worth $4 million on Tuesday.

The signing comes one day after the Blackhawks traded for Foligno in a swap with the Boston Bruins that included centerpiece Taylor Hall.

Foligno was set to be an unrestricted free agent.

Foligno, 35, just completed his 16th season in the NHL, the past two in Boston. The winger has 525 points (215 goals, 310 assists) in 1,081 career games with four teams, including the Columbus Blue Jackets (2012-21). He was selected No. 28 overall by Ottawa in the 2006 draft.

NHL News: NHL, players start Player Inclusion Coalition

The National Hockey League and its players association are coming together to form the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, with current and former NHL players and women’s professional hockey players working toward equality and inclusion in the sport.

To assist in the coalition’s efforts, the league and the National Hockey League Players Association contributed $1 million.

Chairing the 20-member coalition will be former players Anson Carter and P.K. Subban. The members represent a variety of groups, including people of color and the LGBTQ+ community.

The group is a retooling of the NHL Player Inclusion Committee, formed in 2020 to make recommendations on how to advance the experiences of diverse players. But the new coalition is transitioning from one that just makes recommendations to one that will take action through educational sessions and events.

“Every member of the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition shares a passion to bring diversity and inclusion to the forefront of the hockey community. It has been incredible to work together to amplify the role of players as advisors, ambassadors, and catalysts for real change, which benefits underrepresented groups in the game,” said Carter, who played in 674 NHL games. “As we enter the coalition’s next phase, we are excited to grow our impact by sharing more of our work with fans to invite everyone who loves hockey to join the movement with us.”

LPGA News: Nelly Korda: Major at Pebble Beach ‘massive’ for women’s golf

0

Nelly Korda has fond memories of playing Pebble Beach Golf Links — the video game version.

She and her brother, tennis up-and-comer Sebastian Korda, would play EA Sports’ annual “Tiger Woods PGA Tour” series as kids.

“We used to always play Pebble,” Korda told reporters, “and my favorite hole was always 7 on that game.”

Maybe that old knowledge of Pebble’s par-3 seventh hole came in handy Monday when, during a practice round ahead of this week’s U.S. Women’s Open, Korda said she nearly made a hole-in-one.

“I haven’t made a hole-in-one since I was I think 11, but I was over it and I was like, ‘Hole-in-one, hole-in-one,'” said Korda, who used a pitching wedge. “It landed probably an inch away from the cup.”

Korda will be one of the stars of the show this week at Pebble Beach in California, where the famed venue is hosting a modern women’s major championship for the first time.

Korda and the other best players in the world have headed west just two weeks after playing historic Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey for the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

“It’s amazing to see we’re making these massive strides forward, not only with the increase in purses but the venues we get to play, the rich history that we just get to be a part of,” Korda said. “I think that’s our little piece of history, as well.”

Pebble Beach hosted the U.S. Women’s Amateur in 1940 and 1948 when it was considered a major. Since then, the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods have won U.S. Opens there, but the women’s game haven’t been back.

The USGA has already agreed to hold more U.S. Women’s Opens at Pebble Beach in 2035, 2040 and 2048.

The course, situated above the coastline in California’s Monterey Peninsula, is iconic not only for its history but its visual appeal.

“I would say scenic,” Korda said. “The views out here are impeccable. Some of the biggest houses I’ve ever seen, too. It’s a little bit distracting being on the golf course and looking at all the properties here.”

It’s a difficult test of golf, to boot, with players preparing for small greens and difficult slopes and elevations.

“I don’t think you can compare this golf course to any tournament,” Korda said. “It’s Pebble. Now I understand it, playing it for the first time.”

Korda, who missed the cut at the Women’s PGA last month after taking some time off to deal with back pain, is still ranked No. 2 in the world and is hunting for her second major championship after breaking through at the 2021 Women’s PGA.

She is also excited for what major venues like Pebble Beach — and record prize purses, like the record-setting $10 million on offer at the U.S. Women’s Open last year — can do for the future of women’s golf.

“Everything comes hand in hand,” Korda said. “I think when we get put on these incredible venues and you raise the prize money, that just raises attention. I think everything comes hand in and everything has to work together to form something beautiful.”
