No. 8 UCLA shoots to one-sided win over Sacramento State

Jaylen Clark’s perfect shooting performance and a 20-0 first-half run powered No. 8 UCLA to a 76-50 rout of Sacramento State on Monday in the season-opening contest for both teams in Los Angeles.

The Bruins trailed 16-12 midway through the first half before consecutive baskets from Tyger Campbell jump-started what proved to be the decisive stretch.

Campbell’s five straight points, including one of his two made 3-pointers on four attempts for the night, gave UCLA a lead it never relinquished. The Bruins extended the gap to 16 points before Sacramento State ended its scoring drought with 2:41 left in the half.

The Hornets went more than seven minutes between field goals as the Bruins took over.

UCLA’s lead swelled to as many as 27 points in the second half.

Clark’s game-high 17 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the floor highlighted a strong all-around performance that included four assists, eight rebounds and seven steals. His turnover-creation contributed to UCLA’s outstanding defensive night.

The Bruins turned 21 Sacramento State giveaways into 26 points. UCLA held the Hornets to just 19-of-55 shooting (34.5 percent) from the floor, including 2-for-18 (11.1 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc.

UCLA, meanwhile, knocked down six of its 10 3-point attempts as part of a 34-of-64 overall shooting performance from the floor (53.1 percent). David Singleton came off the bench to pace the Bruins’ long-range shooting, going 3-of-3 en route to 13 points.

He was one of five Bruins to score in double-figures along with Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Campbell, both of whom recorded 14 points. Jaquez also grabbed seven rebounds, while Campbell matched Clark and Sacramento State’s Gianni Hunt with a game-high four assists.

Amari Bailey rounded out UCLA’s double-digit-scoring performances with 10 points in his collegiate debut.

Zach Chappell and Cameron Wilbon led Sacramento State with 10 points each. Callum McRae led all players with 10 rebounds, and Akol Mawein added seven points and eight rebounds.

UC Davis beats neighbor Cal for first time in 34 tries

Elijah Pepper and Ty Johnson combined for all of the scoring in a late 11-0 run Monday night, rallying UC Davis to its first-ever men’s college basketball victory over Cal 75-65 in each team’s season opener in Berkeley, Calif.

Christian Anigwe had 21 points, Johnson 17 and Pepper 16 for the Aggies, who had lost the previous 33 times they faced their Northern California rival, separated by about 75 miles, in a series that dates back to 1917.

Transfer Devin Askew had 19 points to pace Cal, which was trying to start off the season on a positive note after going 12-20 last season.

Cal led 61-60 after a free throw by Sam Alajiki with 7:04 to play before going almost five minutes without scoring.

Meanwhile, Pepper dropped in a pair of layups, Johnson went for five consecutive points, and Pepper nailed a jumper in an 11-point burst that suddenly had the visitors in front 71-61 with just 2:53 to play.

Hampered by 38.1 percent shooting, Cal got no closer than six the rest of the way.

Anigwe hit 8 of 12 shots for Davis, which went 13-11 last season.

Johnson led the Aggies in rebounds with eight, while Pepper also found time for three assists and four steals.

The Aggies shot 48.2 percent and managed to equal Cal in 3-pointers with six apiece despite attempting six fewer.

Lars Thiemann had 17 points to go with eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Golden Bears. Kuany Kuany also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Askew, who shot 7-for-20, recorded a game-high four assists in his first game for Cal after having played one season apiece at Kentucky and Texas.

Utah begins season with blowout of Long Island

Branden Carlson’s 21-point, 10-rebound double-double helped Utah cruise to a 89-48 season-opening win over Long Island on Monday night in Salt Lake City.

Gabe Madsen added 13 points for the Utes, going 7 of 7 at the foul line. Freshman Wilguens Exacte hit for 12 off the bench, while Mike Saunders and Rollie Worster each chipped in 11 points. Utah controlled the boards 53-34 and committed only seven turnovers, more than making up for 41.7 percent field goal shooting.

Tre Wood scored 11 points for the Sharks, playing their first game under new coach Rod Strickland. The former NBA All-Star was hired to replace Derek Kellogg in late June.

LIU was able to hang with its Pac-12 Conference foe for nearly a half, but the Utes’ size and depth became too much in the second half. Utah came out of halftime with a 12-0 run that upped its lead to 26 points and kept pouring it on until it owned a 40-point advantage on Jaxon Brenchly’s driving layup with 5:16 left.

The Sharks made only 32.2 percent of their shots and coughed up 17 turnovers that led to 17 Utes points.

Utah set a quick tone by rattling off the first eight points and forcing Strickland to burn a timeout before his team scored a point. In fact, LIU failed to get on the board for the game’s first 4:29, finally doing so via Marko Maletic’s 3-pointer.

Exacte canned a 3-pointer at the 7:55 mark of the half to give the Utes a 27-11 lead. At that point, the Sharks made their best run of the game, ripping off 11 consecutive points to pull within 29-24 on CJ Delancy’s putback with 3:52 remaining.

However, Utah finally started pulling away. Madsen accounted for a 3-pointer and two foul shots in a 7-0 burst that pushed the margin back to 12 points. He made two more free throws in the last minute for a 42-28 lead at halftime.

Kentucky transfer powers Washington past Weber State

Keion Brooks Jr. recorded 20 points and seven rebounds in his Washington debut to lead the Huskies to a 69-52 victory over Weber State in the season opener for both teams on Monday night at Seattle.

PJ Fuller II scored 10 points and Franck Kepnang contributed eight rebounds and three blocked shots before fouling out for the Huskies.

Brooks played three seasons at Kentucky before transferring to Washington prior to this season.

Keith Dinwiddie scored 14 points and Steven Verplancken added 12 for the Wildcats. Standout Dillon Jones had just eight points on 2-of-10 shooting but also had eight assists and seven rebounds before fouling out.

The Huskies shot 47.1 percent from the field, including 6 of 19 (31.6 percent) from 3-point range. Washington outrebounded the Wildcats 35-24 and held an 18-1 advantage in second-chance points.

Weber State connected on 35.6 percent of its shots and was just 4 of 23 (17.4 percent) from behind the arc.

The Huskies took a 10-point lead for the first time when Brooks scored on a putback with 17:01 remaining.

The Wildcats responded with an 11-4 run, and Jones’ layup cut Washington’s lead to 41-38 with 13:07 to play.

The Huskies scored the next eight points, a run that included 3-pointers from Brooks and Cole Bajema, to make it 49-38 with 11:34 remaining.

Jones made two free throws to cut Weber State’s deficit to seven with 6:27 left, but Washington went on a 11-1 run to put the game away.

Fuller scored four straight points to push the advantage to 60-47 with 3:48 to play, and Keyon Menifield completed the flurry with a 3-pointer to make it 65-48 with 2:43 left to help the Huskies close it out.

Washington finished the first half with a 15-1 run to hold a 31-23 halftime lead.

Dinwiddie converted a three-point play and Junior Ballard drained a 3-pointer to give Weber State a 22-16 lead with 9:04 left in the half.

However, the Wildcats missed their final 12 field-goal attempts of the half and the Huskies took advantage.

Bajema’s 3-pointer gave Washington a 24-23 lead with 3:17 left. Brooks capped the flurry with a putback with 34 seconds remaining.

Brooks had 12 points in the half. Washington shot 44 percent (11 of 25) while Weber State made just 5 of 22 shots (22.7 percent) before the break.

No. 21 Oregon buries Florida A&M behind strong second half

The Oregon Ducks didn’t shoot well from long range, but the inside presence of N’Faly Dante was enough to lead the 21st-ranked Ducks to an 80-45 win over Florida A&M on Monday night in the basketball season opener for both teams in Eugene, Ore.

Dante scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds, and Colorado transfer Keeshawn Barthelemy added 13 in his Oregon debut. Will Richardson scored 11 points and the Ducks outscored the Rattlers 44-20 in the second half.

The Ducks led by as many as 16 points, 29-13, in the first half. They took a 51-35 lead on Nate Bittle’s layup with 12:13 to play in the game, and Barthelemy followed that with a 3-pointer as Oregon took control.

Those two baskets were part of a 14-0 run that sealed the Ducks’ win. Up 46-35 early in the second half, Kel’el Ware and Barthelemy hit 3s to go with Bittle’s basket, two Tyrone Williams layups and a dunk from Quincy Guerrier.

Florida A&M couldn’t recover, suddenly down 60-35 with nine minutes to play.

The Ducks made just 1 of 14 3s in the first half but hit five in the second. Oregon dominated in rebounding with a 44-26 edge, and had 42 points in the paint to the Rattlers’ 24.

Not a single Florida A&M player scored in double figures. Jordan Chatman and Jordan Tillmon scored eight points each.

Richardson reached double figures in scoring for the 23rd time in his career. Head coach Dana Altman won his 301st game as Oregon’s head coach, and the 711th victory as a head coach.

The Rattlers (0-1) have a long road trip to the Pacific Northwest to open this season with three games in five days, starting at Oregon, north to Portland to play the University of Portland on November 9, and back down south to face Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore. two days later.

Oregon has won all three meetings with Florida A&M, in the overall series.

Steph Curry scores 47 as Warriors eke out win vs. Kings

Stephen Curry took the Golden State Warriors’ five-game losing streak into his own hands Monday night, exploding for a season-high 47 points in a come-from-behind, 116-113 victory over the Sacramento Kings in San Francisco.

Returning home from a trip in which they lost all five games, the Warriors watched the rival Kings use 14 3-pointers to lead most of the way, including 100-92 after a Kevin Huerter 30-footer with 6:17 to play.

But Curry saved 14 of his points for a game-ending, 24-13 run, including a 3-pointer that gave Golden State the lead for good at 110-107 with 1:24 to go.

Curry added a short jumper, an assist on a Draymond Green dunk and two free throws with 1.3 seconds remaining that accounted for the final margin of victory.

The Kings, who did not make a 3-pointer after Huerter’s success with 6:17 to go, had a desperation shot at a tie, but Huerter couldn’t connect on a 33-footer, sending Sacramento to just its second defeat in its last five games.

Curry’s 40-point game was the 57th of his career. He made 17 of his 24 shots, including seven of his 12 3-point attempts on a night when the Warriors matched the Kings’ 14 successes from beyond the arc.
