NHL News: Blues say D Torey Krug injured foot while training

St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug injured his right foot during early fitness preparations for the upcoming season, general manager Doug Armstrong announced Tuesday.

The nature and severity of Krug’s injury were not revealed, but the team said Krug will be reevaluated on Oct. 1. The Blues’ season begins Oct. 12.

Krug, 32, is entering his fourth season with St. Louis after nine years with the Boston Bruins. He signed a seven-year, $45.5 million contract in 2020.

Krug had 32 points (seven goals, 25 assists) over 63 games in 2022-23. In 701 career games with Boston (2011-20) and St. Louis, he has tallied 444 points (85 goals, 359 assists) and 342 penalty minutes. He also has 11 goals and 46 assists over 82 career playoff games.

Krug averaged 18:35 of ice time last season, his lowest average since 2013-14.

NHL News: Avalanche, F Tomas Tatar agree to one-year deal

The Colorado Avalanche agreed to terms with forward Tomas Tatar on a one-year contract on Tuesday.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Tomas has been a consistent, productive player throughout his NHL career,” Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said. “He is a veteran winger who brings scoring depth to our middle six and can contribute at both ends of the ice. We are excited to have him under contract for this season.”

Tatar, 32, played in all 82 games last season with the New Jersey Devils, racking up 20 goals and 28 assists for 48 points. It was the sixth time in his career that he scored at least 20 goals in a season.

The Ilava, Slovakia, native also became only the second player in franchise history behind Patrik Elias (2000-01) to record 20 or more goals and have a +40 rating or better. He led the Devils and was fifth in the league with a +41 plus/minus rating.

A second-round pick (60th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Tatar has 455 points (211 goals, 244 assists) in 783 career NHL games with the Red Wings (2010-18), Vegas Golden Knights (2018), Montreal Canadiens (2018-2021) and Devils (2021-2023).

PGA News: Zach Johnson factoring ‘demanding’ course into U.S. Ryder Cup lineups

0

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson and vice captain Stewart Cink have their team of 12, and now the time for scouting the course and penciling mock pairings has arrived.

There’s chemistry between teammates to consider, such as Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele’s dominance together as match-play partners. But what stands out to Johnson and Cink about this Ryder Cup in particular is the demanding nature of Marco Simone Golf Course.

“It’s probably the most — the most demanding, physically, of any Cup course I’ve ever seen that I’ve been a part of,” Cink said Tuesday ahead of the PGA Tour’s Fortinet Championship.

“No question,” Johnson said. “In my time, for sure.”

Johnson headed to Rome earlier this month with nine of the team’s 12 players to scout Marco Simone. Only Jordan Spieth, Cantlay and Schauffele could not make the trip.

“We’re starting to get into some possible pairings to see what’s best for that golf course and what’s best for our team,” Johnson said.

“I think the golf course is going to solve some of that problem because it’s so hilly and the temperature could be pretty hot, too, that I think guys are going to be happy to probably rest,” Cink chimed in. “There’s not going to be a lot of disappointment for not playing.”

Johnson agreed, noting it was “a brutal walk.”

The host team gets to set up the course to its liking, and the United States has not fared well overseas, last winning a Ryder Cup in Europe in 1993.

Johnson and Cink will spend some time at the Fortinet Championship with two of their team members, Max Homa and Justin Thomas. Homa is the event’s defending champion, while Thomas is competing for points in the first-ever FedEx Cup Fall series.

When making their lineup decision, the captain and vice captain aren’t going to weight Homa’s and Thomas’ week in Napa, Calif., too heavily.

“Four days of stroke play is vastly different than five sessions of match play in three days,” Johnson said.

Cink already figures that whatever Homa and Thomas accomplish this week “will be overstated to the good or to the bad.”

“I hope they both win. I don’t think that’s possible, but I hope they both win,” Cink said. “That would be great for their confidence alone … I just think for us internally, it would probably be — we hope that they have confidence coming out of this week and that would be a great thing.”

Oracle Stock Drops 10 percent on Weak Outlook

0

Oracle’s fiscal first-quarter results, released on Monday, exceeded analysts’ expectations thanks to growing demand for cloud services driven by businesses’ efforts to develop generative artificial intelligence applications.
Despite the positive results, Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) shares dropped more than 10% pre-market today as the company provided a less optimistic outlook for the second quarter during the earnings call.
Oracle reported adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.19 on revenue of $12.45 billion, surpassing the Street expectations of EPS of $1.15 on revenue of $12.44 billion.
During the earnings call, Oracle projected that total revenue would grow by 5-7% at current currency rates and 3-5% in constant currency. However, the company anticipated cloud revenue growth of 28% in constant currency, slightly below the 29% reported for the first quarter. This cloud revenue outlook is likely the primary reason for the stock’s post-earnings decline.

Enphase Energy Slashed to Hold at Truist Securities

0

Truist downgraded Enphase Energy (NASDAQ:ENPH) from a Buy rating to a Hold, along with lowering the price target from $210 to $135. The analysts provided insight, expressing concerns about the potential risks associated with a near-term recovery in the U.S. residential solar market due to factors like rate and spending challenges.
This adjusted outlook and the reevaluation of group valuations were the primary reasons for the downgrade. The analysts further explained that the valuation dynamics within the industry have shifted, with utility-scale solar suppliers now trading at a premium compared to residential supplier counterparts.

Coinbase’s Stock Impressive YTD Gain is Unsustainable

0

Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) shares have surged by an impressive 124% year-to-date, but Mizuho analysts believe that this rapid rise is not sustainable.
Bitcoin prices have also experienced a 56% increase year-to-date, driven by a more favorable environment for risky assets. However, the analysts suggest that this situation may not last.
Mizuho Securities pointed out that, historically, rising Bitcoin prices have led to increased retail engagement in cryptocurrency trading. However, they now observe a decline in retail crypto FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), which they believe could result in an unprecedented disconnect between Bitcoin prices and Coinbase trading volumes. Retail trading accounts for a significant 95% of Coinbase’s trading revenue.
The analysts anticipate a substantial drop in Coinbase’s stock value in the coming months, citing the waning enthusiasm seen after the spike in daily trading volumes following news related to the SEC and Grayscale. As evidence, the analysts highlighted that average daily volumes in September are tracking at a level approximately 25% below those in August.

Sight Sciences Plunges 46 percent Following Full Year Guidance Cut

0

Sight Sciences (NASDAQ:SGHT) revised its revenue expectations for the year due to uncertainties surrounding the Medicare coverage for its products. Shares plummeted more than 46% intra-day today.
As a consequence of this uncertainty and a subsequent decrease in demand, the company now anticipates its full-year revenue to range between $80 million and $82 million. This is a decrease from their earlier projection of $89 million to $94 million.
Furthermore, for the third quarter, their revenue is estimated to be in the range of $19 million to $20 million, compared to the Street estimate of $23.7 million.
Sight Sciences plans to provide a comprehensive report on its third-quarter results in early November. Alongside this update, the company has announced the appointment of Matt Link as its Chief Commercial Officer.

GoDaddy Gains 4 percent as Activist Investor Urges a Potential Sale

0

GoDaddy (NYSE:GDDY) shares are on the rise (up 4% intra-day today) following a letter from activist investor Starboard Value, which indicated the presence of a significant opportunity for value creation within the company.
Starboard, currently the third largest shareholder in GoDaddy with around 7.8% of the outstanding common stock, expressed its disappointment in GoDaddy’s operational, financial, and stock performance over the past 18 months.
GoDaddy had previously held an Investor Day in early 2022 where it outlined its financial goals for 2022 through 2024. However, Starboard believed that there was room for improvement beyond those targets. While some initial progress was made in 2023, GoDaddy, according to Starboard, has since fallen behind on nearly every metric it presented at the Investor Day.
They also emphasized that the board should maintain a receptive attitude toward exploring other possibilities for enhancing value. This could encompass strategies to achieve greater profit margins and execute cost-cutting measures. Additionally, Starboard mentioned the possibility of considering a potential sale of the company.

Report: Maui Invitational expected to be played in Honolulu

The Maui Invitational is expected to move to Honolulu this November as Maui continues to recover from August’s devastating wildfires, The Messenger reported Tuesday.

Tournament organizers are finalizing plans and could announce the move by week’s end, per the report.

The Lahaina Civic Center, the home for the Nov. 20-22 tournament, was not damaged in the fires but is being used by various relief organizations to assist in fire recovery. That has left organizers to look at the arena at the University of Hawaii, instead, for the Maui Invitational.

The eight teams making up this year’s tournament field are Kansas, Marquette, Purdue, Gonzaga, Syracuse, Tennessee, UCLA and Division II host Chaminade.

Per the report, several venues across the United States offered to host the tournament, but organizers want to keep it in state to help bolster both fundraising efforts and Hawaii’s economy.

The PGA Tour has not altered plans to hold the season-opening The Sentry at Kapalua, Maui, in the first week of January. Commissioner Jay Monahan said earlier that his group will follow the lead of local officials.

“We want to help be a part of the revitalization,” Monahan said Aug. 22 during his annual State of the PGA Tour news conference. “There are a lot of considerations.

“We’re committed … if we’re allowed to, if we’re invited, if we’re embraced, given all that needs to be accomplished, we will be there, 100 percent. But I think at this point right now that’s outside of our hands. Our focus is on what we can do (to help).”
