MLB News: Yankees RHP Luis Severino (oblique) done for season

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino has a high-grade left oblique strain and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Saturday night.

He was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier in the day, a move that could end his career in pinstripes.

In a corresponding transaction, the Yankees recalled right-hander Ron Marinaccio from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He is 4-5 with a 4.08 ERA in 44 relief appearances this season.

The oft-injured Severino exited Friday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers after allowing a single to Brice Turang to start the fifth inning. He appeared fine physically in the first four innings, as he gave up two runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. But after facing Turang, he grabbed his left side in obvious pain.

“I feel like somebody shot me,” Severino said after the game. “It’s just like a deep, sharp pain.”

Severino made his season debut in mid-May after recovery from a lat strain that had sidelined him since spring training, an injury that also plagued him last season.

After All-Star seasons in 2017 and ‘18, the Yankees signed Severino to a four-year, $40 million contract extension. He now is in the fifth, team option year of that deal, paying him $15 million this season.

Since his combined 33-14 record and 3.18 ERA in 2017-18, Severino is 13-12 with a 4.47 ERA in 45 games. That includes this season’s mark of 4-8 with a 6.65 ERA in 19 appearances (18 starts).

In his eighth season, all with the Yankees, Severino, 29, is 54-37 with a 3.79 ERA in 141 games (125 starts).

Severino missed most of the 2019 season with a lat strain and all of 2020 due to Tommy John surgery. He also has had problems with his groin and shoulder.

Whether the Yankees re-sign him this winter is anyone’s guess.

“There’s a lot at stake for him,” manager Aaron Boone said Friday. “He’s been through a lot over these last several years (with) injuries, and when he has pitched, he’s pitched really well. This year, when he came back, he really had an extended struggle when he’s been healthy for the first time in his career.”

MLB News: Royals activate RHP Brad Keller (shoulder) from 60-day injured list

The Kansas City Royals on Saturday activated Brad Keller from the 60-day injured list after the right-hander recovered from a right shoulder impingement.

The Royals also placed rookie catcher Freddy Fermin on the 10-day IL because of a left middle finger fracture; placed rookie left-hander Austin Cox (left knee) on the 60-day IL; and selected the contract of catcher/outfielder Tyler Cropley from Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Keller last pitched for the Royals on May 15, allowing three hits, eight walks and three runs (two earned) in a 4-0 loss at the San Diego Padres. He went on the 15-day IL and was transferred to the 60-day IL on Aug. 16. This season, he is 3-4 with a 4.36 ERA, 40 walks and 31 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings over nine starts.

“It’s been a trying year for (Keller),” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “But as of late, the last three weeks or so, he’s really thrown the ball well on his rehab assignment.”

Keller, 28, is an impending free agent who has played for Kansas City his entire MLB career since 2018. He is 38-53 with a 4.25 ERA, 298 walks and 506 strikeouts in 677 innings over 148 games (114 starts).

Fermin injured his hand when his glove was clipped by Toronto’s George Springer on a catcher’s interference play in the eighth inning of the host Blue Jays’ 5-4 victory on Friday.

Fermin, 28, is batting .281 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs in 217 at-bats over 70 games.

Cox also was injured in Friday’s game while running to cover first base on Alejandro Kirk’s grounder in the seventh inning. Cox’s left knee buckled as he went to catch the throw from first baseman Salvador Perez. He was helped off the field and did not return, with his season now over.

Cox, 26, who made his major league debut in May, is 0-1 with a 4.79 ERA, 17 walks and 33 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings over 24 games (three starts).

Cropley, 27, batted .235 with a .329 on-base percentage, .359 slugging percentage, four home runs and 17 RBIs in 145 at-bats over 43 games at Double-A.

“(Cropley) does a great job behind the plate receiving and blocking,” Quatraro said. “This will shift (first baseman Perez) back there more.”

MLB News: Braves bring up LHP Dylan Dodd, option RHP Ben Heller

The Atlanta Braves on Saturday recalled rookie left-hander Dylan Dodd from Triple-A Gwinnett and optioned right-hander Ben Heller to Triple-A.

Dodd, 25, is 2-1 with a 7.40 ERA, eight walks and 12 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings over five games (all starts) for Atlanta after making his major league debut in April.

The Braves selected Dodd in the third round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Southeast Missouri State.

Heller, 32, pitched one scoreless, hitless inning on Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Braves’ 8-2 home victory.

In 19 appearances for the Braves this season, Heller has a 3.86 ERA with 11 walks and 16 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings over 19 appearances. Atlanta acquired him in a June 6 trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for future considerations.

Celebrity Paul Walker gets fiftieth birthday emotional tribute from daughter Meadow, web fans pour in love

Meadow Walker Instagram

Celebrity Paul Walker would have been 50 years old today and the Fast and Furious star’s daughter Meadow Walker posted a touching tribute to her father who passed away almost a decade ago in 2013, in a car crash at the age of 40. The model and actress shared a couple of photos: one of Paul Walker and the other one was a cute throwback of father and daughter.

Meadow shared a photo of her as a young child with her father. She added text in his honor where she described him as a “guardian angel” and more. She added a lot of adjectives describing the good qualities of her late father and concluded the post saying, “I love you and miss you every day.”

The cute photo shows a father and daughter in a field. It appears as if Meadow is sitting on Paul Walker’s lap.

A post shared by Meadow Walker Thornton-Allan (@meadowwalker)

Later in the day, she posted another photo of her father from Fast and called him an Icon and a Legend. The photo shows Paul Walker standing with an iconic car from the movie behind him. She said that the photo had been used as an image on limited edition t-shirts for the Fast star’s 50th birthday and its proceeds would go to the Paul Walker foundation. She thanked Universal for allowing them to use the photo.

Although legendary actor Paul Walker died in November 2013, he continues to receive tributes in different ways from his celebrity costars of the Fast franchise as well as his family. The most recent one included Meadow’s debut in Fast X, the newest film in the Fast and Furious franchise. In May, Paul’s younger brother Cody named his newborn son Paul, in honor of his brother.

Celebrity Vin Diesel, has not only been Paul Walker’s costar in the Fast and Furious movies, but is also the godfather of Meadow. In October 2021, Vin Diesel walked Meadow down the aisle, in place of her late father Paul Walker, when she married Louis Thornton-Allan.

McDonalds is Getting Rid of Self-Serve Soda Fountains

Library of Congress

Almost gone are the days where the server at fast food chain McDonald’s (MCD) hands you a cup you fill up and refill at the soda station. You still have time; however, the franchise will phase out this self-style service by 2032. Customers must ask for refills at the counter once the restaurants implement the policy.

Since the COVID-19 epidemic, consumer behavior has shifted, and the company has seen an increase in sales through its drive-thru and delivery services. Fewer people are opting to eat in its dining rooms, which decreases the demand for the self-serve machines.

In order to reflect this new reality, McDonald’s future restaurant designs will have high-tech drive-throughs as well as smaller or no dining rooms. According to its most recent earnings report, digital sales, which include orders placed through its app or through partners that offer food delivery, now account for 40% of all its sales.

Catastrophic flooding in Libya, 3,000 are thought dead- another 10,000 missing

Tragically, one of the deadliest natural disasters in Libya’s history just occurred there. Following terrible flooding that has spread through several parts of the country, over 3,000 people are thought dead and another 10,000 are missing. Libya and the rest of the world are in shock as a result of this calamity, which has prompted immediate measures to save and aid those in need.

The city of Bayda had more than 16 inches of rain in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday, according to the National Center of Meteorology of Libya.

An extraordinary occurrence of torrential rainfall, overflowing rivers, and a lack of infrastructure to handle the floods led to flooding in Libya. Tripoli, the nation’s capital, and other northern regions have been particularly heavily struck, overwhelming locals and government officials.

https://organicgreek.com

The BBC reported, “Mr. Chkiouat, the aviation minister and part of the eastern government’s emergency response committee, told BBC Newshour that the collapse of one of the dams to the south of Derna had dragged large parts of the city into the sea. “A massive neighborhood has been destroyed – there is a large number of victims, which is increasing each hour.

The effects of this terrible incident are severe. Roads were washed away, homes were completely demolished, and critical infrastructure was badly harmed. As a result of the displacement of tens of thousands of Libyans, many of them are now stranded without access to food, clean water, or shelter. Numerous people’s everyday routines have been interrupted by this crisis, which has also made an already precarious humanitarian situation in Libya worse.

The leader of the Libyan military declared at a press conference on Monday that “entire neighborhoods have been wiped out with their residents.”

The extensive flooding in the country of North Africa is the result of Mediterranean storm Daniel, which over the weekend swept away entire neighborhoods and wrecked homes in numerous coastal cities.

Since Col. Muammar Gaddafi, Libya’s longtime leader, was deposed and killed in 2011, the country has been in political instability. The oil-rich country is now virtually divided between an interim, internationally recognized government that operates out of Tripoli and another one in the east.

Rescue operations are being hampered as a result, because the numerous agencies are unable to react swiftly to a natural disaster.

WTA News: Simona Halep banned 4 years for anti-doping violations

0

An independent tribunal suspended former World No. 1 Simona Halep four years for two violations of anti-doping rules, the International Tennis Integrity Agency said Tuesday.

The two-time Grand Slam winner from Romania has not played since the 2022 U.S. Open, when she lost in the first round as the No. 7 seed to Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur.

Last October, she was provisionally suspended by the ITIA after a positive test for the banned substance roxadustat at the 2021 U.S. Open. In May, the ITIA filed a second charge against her after the organization said it found discrepancies in her biological passport, which reveals the effects of doping.

Halep, from Romania, has denied all charges.

“It is of the utmost importance for players to be aware of the Tennis Anti-Doping Program rules and to follow them,” the WTA said in a prepared statement. “The WTA will support the decisions reached through the process and will continue to follow this closely.”

Halep has the right to appeal the ruling and said she plans to do so. If the suspension is not overturned or reduced, she is prohibited from playing pro tennis until Oct. 6, 2026.

“The last year has been the hardest match of my life, and unfortunately my fight continues,” Halep posted to social media Tuesday. “I have devoted my life to the beautiful game of tennis. I take the rules that govern our sport very seriously and take pride in the fact that I have never knowingly or intentionally used any prohibited substance. I refused to accept their decision of a four-year ban.”

Halep has acknowledged adjusting her nutritional supplements in the summer of 2022 on the advice of her “trusted team and physiotherapist” and said one of the supplements contained roxadustat, which wasn’t listed as an ingredient. She said subsequent tests came back negative.

“I am continuing to train and do everything in my power to clear my name of these false allegations and return to the court,” she said. “I intend to appeal this decision to The Court of Arbitration for Sport and pursue all legal remedies against the supplement company in question.”

Halep reached No. 1 on Oct. 9, 2017. She has 24 career singles titles, including wins at the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019. Her career earnings total $40.2 million.

NHL News: Mike Babcock, Blue Jackets players deny invading players’ privacy

New Columbus Blue Jackets coach Mike Babcock has denied allegations that he scrolled through cell phone pictures of his players during introductory meetings.

Former NHL player turned podcast host and NHL TV analyst Paul Bissonnette reported that Babcock asked several Jackets players for their phones and displayed pictures via Airplay in Babcock’s office.

In a social media post, Bissonnette said he had received corroboration from several players that the story is accurate. However, both Babcock and captain Boone Jenner denied the allegations in public statements.

“(Bissonnette’s version) couldn’t be anything further from the truth,” Babcock told The Athletic. “They sit in my office, their phone in their hand, and they scroll through.”

Babcock denied that players were forced to share all their photos with him, only sharing the photos the players chose as part of a project to get to know each other better before camp opens.

“I met with Boone first because he’s the captain,” Babcock told The Athletic. “He showed me things about his home, his farm … He was about to get married, so (pictures of) his fiancee, too. It was a great conversation we had, a real good meeting. To think it was any other way is a huge mistake.”

“I thought it was a great first meeting and good way for us to start to build a relationship,” Jenner said in a statement through the club, telling The Athletic it was his decision on which photos to share with Babcock. “To have this blown out of proportion is truly disappointing.”

Bissonnette stuck to his story on social media, saying he had “tons of players confirm it.”

The NHL Players’ Association told The Athletic it is investigating the allegations.
