NFL News: Commanders WR Curtis Samuel, S Kamren Curl to play vs. Bills

Washington Commanders wide receiver Curtis Samuel and safety Kamren Curl are expected to play in the team’s home game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in Landover, Md.

Samuel (hip/illness) and Curl (illness) both missed practice on Friday and were listed as questionable to face the Bills (1-1). On Saturday, the Commanders (2-0) upgraded both players.

Samuel, 27, has recorded eight catches for 73 yards to go along with two carries for 19 yards in two games for Washington.

Curl, 24, has totaled 19 tackles and one pass defensed in two games this season.

NFL News: Colts release Week 1 starting RB Deon Jackson

The Indianapolis Colts released Week 1 starter Deon Jackson and signed fellow running back Trey Sermon from the practice squad on Saturday.

Jackson rushed for just 14 yards on 13 carries and gained only 14 yards on five receptions in the season-opening 31-21 loss to Jacksonville on Sept. 10.

Zack Moss got the start in Week 2 at Houston and gained 107 yards from scrimmage on 22 touches and scored on an 11-yard run in the Colts’ 31-20 victory.

With 2021 NFL rushing champion Jonathan Taylor still on the physically unable to perform list, Moss will remain the RB1 for the Colts (1-1) in Sunday’s game in Baltimore against the Ravens (2-0).

Jackson, 24, rushed for 281 yards and two touchdowns and caught 35 passes for 223 yards and one score in 27 games (three starts) over the last three seasons in Indianapolis. He was undrafted out of Duke in 2021.

Sermon, 24, was a third-round pick by San Francisco in 2021. He has rushed for 186 yards and one TD and has three receptions for 26 yards in 11 games (two starts) with the 49ers (2021) and Philadelphia Eagles (2022).

The Colts also elevated guard Ike Boettger and wide receiver Juwann Winfree to the active roster from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.

NFL News: Broncos rule out OLB Frank Clark, S Justin Simmons vs. Dolphins

The Denver Broncos will be without two important players on defense against the host Miami Dolphins in Week 3, ruling out outside linebackers Frank Clark and safety Justin Simmons with hip injuries Friday.

Clark will miss his second straight game, but Simmons popped up on the injury report Wednesday. They both missed practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Defensive tackle Mike Purcell (ankle) also missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, but he returned as a limited practice participant Friday and was ruled questionable for the Miami game.

Simmons, 29, was a Pro Bowler in 2020 and a second-team All-Pro selection in 2019, 2021 and 2022. He had 14 tackles through two games for the Broncos this season.

Clark, 30, is a three-time Pro Bowler who joined the Broncos in the offseason. He had two tackles in Week 1 and has racked up 58.5 sacks in his first eight NFL seasons with Seattle and Kansas City.

The Dolphins listed running back Salvon Ahmed (groin) as doubtful. Ahmed returned to practice in limited fashion Friday after missing Wednesday and Thursday.

Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (concussion) and tackle Terron Armstead (back, ankle, knee) are among seven Dolphins players listed as questionable.

CFL News: Facing Stampeders, Tiger-Cats aim to end home woes

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have struggled mightily at home this season.

With five losses in seven games in Hamilton, the Tiger-Cats (6-8) look to give their fans a better performance on Saturday when they host the Calgary Stampeders (4-10).

Hamilton is returning home after dropping a 29-14 decision to the provincial-rival Toronto Argonauts last Saturday.

Tiger-Cats rookie Taylor Powell completed 27 of 42 passes for 334 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Kiondre Smith proved to be his most trusted target, reeling in nine balls for 156 yards.

“Every time we take the field, it’s to win the football game but we have to help ourselves,” Tiger-Cats head coach Orlondo Steinauer said. “We did some great things (against Toronto) but it was sporadic.

“We have to string it together consistently, we have to play a little better situational football. I think there is a lot of resolve, a lot of resilience. The effort is there, it’s the execution.”

Calgary knows a thing or two about struggling with its execution. The Stampeders fell for the fifth time in six games last Saturday with a 28-11 setback to the Montreal Alouettes.

“It hasn’t been easy,” Calgary running back Dedrick Mills said Thursday. “We’ve just got to take it one game at a time, focus on our job, and do what we’ve got to do and come out with a win.”

While Mills is ready to go, Ka’Deem Carey became the latest member of the running back room to be affected by an illness. Carey did not participate in Thursday’s practice and is questionable to play versus Hamilton.

Fullback William Langlais returned to practice on Thursday after sitting out Wednesday’s session due to an illness.

As for the Tiger-Cats, defensive linemen Ted Laurent (hamstring) and Cedric Wilcots II (shoulder) and offensive lineman Chris Van Zeyl (arm) have been ruled out versus the Stampeders.

CFL News: Win over Redblacks would send Alouettes to playoffs

The Montreal Alouettes have a straightforward mission Saturday at Ottawa: Win and they’re in the playoffs.

The Alouettes (7-7) swept the first two dates with the Redblacks (4-10) by a combined margin of just eight points.

Montreal won 19-12 in the June 10 season opener at home and 25-24 in the nation’s capital on Aug. 19.

The East Division rivals will complete a home-and-home set and wrap up their season series in Montreal on Oct. 9.

Montreal halted a four-game skid and improved to 4-3 on the road with a 28-11 win at Calgary last Saturday.

Cody Fajardo passed for 252 yards and a touchdown and Caleb Evans ran for two TDs to lead the Alouettes.

“When you don’t (win) for four weeks in football, it weighs on you mentally and physically,” Montreal head coach Jason Maas told TSN690 on Wednesday. “It sure feels good to win after you go through something like that.”

Tyson Philpot has recorded 13 catches for 192 yards and a touchdown over his past two games. He had 19 grabs for 155 yards in his first seven contests.

“Philpot’s been making the most of his opportunities,” Maas said. “This is the Tyson that I remember watching film of all offseason. The last two weeks, he’s been spectacular for us.”

Ottawa also ended a long slide last weekend, beating Saskatchewan 36-28 on Sept. 22 to snap a seven-game losing streak that began on July 28.

The Redblacks led 36-14 with 8:28 remaining and held off a late charge by the Roughriders. Dustin Crum passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns and Devonte Williams ran for 136 yards to lead Ottawa.

“It’s a team that’s in our division,” Redblacks head coach Bob Dyce said of Saturday’s game with Montreal, per TSN. “We’ve got to build off what we accomplished the other night and move forward to get the win back here on our field once again.”

Ottawa has ruled five players out for Saturday, including defensive back Sherrod Baltimore (arm) and wide receiver Nate Behar (ankle).

Montreal receiver Austin Mack (thigh) is doubtful. Defensive lineman Marcus Valdez (ankle), defensive back Kordell Rodgers (foot) and wideout Chandler Worthy (ankle) are out.

CSGO News: ESL Pro Tour transitions to Counter-Strike 2

All of ESL Gaming’s upcoming tournaments will be held in Counter-Strike 2, the Esports tournament organizer announced Friday.

ESL Pro League Season 18, which started before the recent launch of Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), won’t be held there, but ESL’s other major events will.

A’ja Wilson paces Aces to 2-0 lead over Wings

A’ja Wilson became the first player in WNBA postseason history with three straight 30-point games, scoring 30 points to go with 11 rebounds, and the Las Vegas Aces took a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five semifinal series with the Dallas Wings, winning 91-84 at home on Tuesday.

Wilson – revealed earlier Tuesday to have finished third in Most Valuable Player voting behind Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas and winner Breanna Stewart of New York – scored 10 first-quarter points to set the tone for Las Vegas.

The Aces never trailed and had four scorers in double figures. Chelsea Gray’s 23 points, Kelsey Plum’s 18 and Jackie Young’s 13 complemented Wilson.

Dallas rallied from 13 points down in the first half to force a 49-49 tie early in the third quarter, but Las Vegas closed the period on a 21-8 run.

After the Aces pushed their lead to 14 points early in the fourth quarter, the Wings chipped away at the deficit again with a 9-0 run.

Las Vegas responded with a quick 8-3 spurt, which included 3-pointers from Plum and Gray. The duo combined to go 7 of 11 from deep – Plum 4 of 7, Gray 3 of 4 – as the Aces shot 9 of 24 from beyond the arc.

The Wings, meanwhile, shot 10 of 26 from long range, led by Arike Ogunbowale’s 6 of 13. She connected on two attempts over a 10-4 Dallas run that trimmed the deficit to four points with 1:36 left.

The visitors got no closer.

Wilson knocked down four free throws and Young added a pair to keep Dallas at bay. Young also grabbed nine rebounds and passed for four assists.

Gray dished a game-high eight assists.

Ogunbowale led Dallas with 24 points. Natasha Howard and Teaira McCowan each recorded double-doubles; Howard tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds, and McCowan had 12 points and 10 boards.

The series shifts to Dallas’ home court in Arlington, Texas, for Game 3 on Friday.

Kansas G Arterio Morris charged with rape, removed from team

Kansas guard Arterio Morris has been charged with rape and removed from the team.

Morris previously was suspended from the Jayhawks as the alleged sexual assault was investigated.

“When we learned of allegations regarding Arterio Morris, he was suspended from the Kansas men’s basketball program,” coach Bill Self said in a statement emailed to the Journal-World in Lawrence, Kan., Friday morning. “We are now aware he has been arrested and charged, and he was dismissed from the program. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are not able to comment further at this time.”

Morris, 20, was charged in Douglas County (Kan.) District Court with one felony count of rape. The charge is connected to an incident that an 18-year-old woman said occurred on Aug. 26 at McCarthy Hall on campus.

Morris was taken into custody at 7:13 a.m. local time on Friday and released on a $75,000 surety bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 18.

Three teammates potentially are witnesses or have information to offer in the case, according to police reports.

In June 2022, Morris was charged with misdemeanor assault for an alleged altercation with an ex-girlfriend in Texas but was not suspended by the University of Texas.

Morris transferred to Kansas after his freshman season at Texas, when the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 4.6 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.7 steals and 11.8 minutes as a reserve in 38 games. He had yet to play in a regular-season game for the Jayhawks.

Morris was the No. 16 overall player and the No. 1 point guard in the 2022 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He is from DeSoto, Texas.

Kansas already has removed Morris from its online roster.

NBA suspends free agent Joshua Primo 4 games

Free agent Joshua Primo was suspended four games without pay for conduct detrimental to the league on Friday after an NBA investigation concluded that he “engaged in inappropriate and offensive behavior by exposing himself to women.”

The San Antonio Spurs terminated Primo’s contract on Oct. 31 after the team’s former sports psychologist alleged the guard/small forward exposed himself to her multiple times. She then sued the Spurs and Primo, and the complaint was settled out of court.

“Primo maintains that his conduct was not intentional, and the league did not find evidence that he engaged in any sexual or other misconduct apart from these brief exposures,” the NBA said in a statement. “Nevertheless, this behavior does not conform to league standards and warrants discipline.”

Primo, 20, would serve the suspension should he sign with another NBA team.

Shortly after his release from the Spurs, Primo expressed that he was struggling with his mental health.

“I know that you all are surprised by today’s announcement,” Primo said at the time in a statement to ESPN. “I’ve been seeking help to deal with previous trauma I suffered and will now take this time to focus on my mental health treatment more fully. I hope to be able to discuss these issues in the future so I can help others who have suffered in a similar way. I appreciate privacy at this time.”

Primo, a guard, averaged 5.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 54 career games (16 starts) after being selected by the Spurs with the 12th overall selection in the 2021 NBA draft out of Alabama.
