MLS News: Nashville SC, San Jose battle for crucial playoff points

0

The San Jose Earthquakes will aim for some badly needed goals and points when they host Nashville SC’s sturdy defense on Saturday.

Both Nashville (12-9-7, 43 points) and San Jose (10-10-10, 40 points) are in seventh place in their respective conferences, though Nashville has a bit more breathing room in its push for the Eastern Conference playoffs. Only eight points separate second place from 10th in the compact Western Conference, so a loss Saturday and some unfavorable results in other matches could put the Earthquakes below the playoff line entirely.

San Jose is 1-3-2 in its last six matches, including Wednesday’s 2-1 road loss to the Portland Timbers. Portland is now one point behind the Earthquakes in the West standings, as San Jose missed a chance to create separation in the playoff race.

“We need to have a short memory and move on quickly,” Earthquakes coach Luchi Gonzalez said after Wednesday’s match. “I thought we could be better in the attacking third … We need more (goals) and a little bit more determination and final action that I know we have in us.”

Finding that offense could be difficult against Nashville SC, whose 27 goals allowed are the fewest in MLS. Nashville earned its ninth clean sheet of the season in Wednesday’s 3-0 road shutout of Sporting Kansas City.

The victory ended a six-match winless drought (0-4-2) for Nashville SC. Head coach Gary Smith felt the respite and training time provided by the 18-day break in their schedule was critical to his team’s improved form.

“A bit of rest and recovery, or some possessional work and some structure in the team, that was there to see (against Kansas City),” Smith said.

2022 MLS Golden Boot winner Hany Mukhtar is again battling for the award. The Nashville forward has 15 goals this season to lead the league and has scored in each of his last two matches.

San Jose defender Rodrigues is questionable to face Nashville after leaving Wednesday’s match with an undisclosed injury.

MLS News: Scorching Timbers host bottom-table Rapids

0

If it’s September, then it must be time for a late-season run by the Portland Timbers.

The Timbers (10-11-9, 39 points), who will play host to the Colorado Rapids (4-14-10, 22 points) on Saturday night, have won three straight games and are 4-1-1 under interim coach Miles Joseph. They sit in eighth place in MLS’ Western Conference, just above the nine-team cutoff line.

“I think we’ve shown more heart than before,” Timbers defender Dario Zuparic said. “Every time when a team changes the coach, something happens. We are the same team, but I think we changed the mentality.”

The Timbers are coming off a 2-1 victory Wednesday against the San Jose Earthquakes, with Cristhian Paredes and Evander scored.

Evander has scored in seven of his last 11 matches across all competitions. Only Miami’s Lionel Messi (eight) has scored more during that stretch.

Paredes, who was wearing the captain’s armband in place of veteran Diego Chara, who underwent an emergency appendectomy last week, was booked for time-wasting and will miss Saturday’s match because of yellow-card accumulation.

“Probably our best performance so far, front to back,” Joseph said. “First half, I felt like we controlled a lot of the game, especially with our ability to step into the front half of the field, press them, and cause them to make some turnovers. We would gain possession out of that in the front half of the field, which was great. Created a lot of chances off that.”

The Rapids dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Seattle on Wednesday despite Cole Bassett scoring for the second consecutive match. Colorado is 1-4-0 since the resumption of MLS play after the Leagues Cup and is tied with Toronto with a league-low 22 points.

The Rapids had gone five league matches without a goal before Bassett began scoring.

“I hope that for the coaching staff, I hope it brought them belief,” Bassett said. “And you could tell on the field as well, even for myself, I thought I played a pretty bad first half, so I had to come out second half and kind of change that, and I started hot, and (the goal) just got my confidence going. Then for the rest of the half, it was good.”

The Timbers and Rapids played to a scoreless draw July 12 in Commerce City, Colo., in the resumption of a game suspended by weather.

MLS News: St. Louis looks for revenge vs. Minnesota

0

St. Louis City became the first team in the Western Conference to clinch a playoff berth with a 0-0 draw against defending MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Football Club on Wednesday. But there’s still plenty to play for during the regular season for the expansion team as it heads into Saturday night’s match with Minnesota United in Saint Paul, Minn.

With four games and a possible 12 points remaining, St. Louis (15-10-5, 50 points) can still break the expansion-season points record 57 set by LAFC. A top-four finish would guarantee home-field for the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs. And St. Louis City also holds a five-point lead over the second-place Seattle Sounders (12-9-9, 45 points) in the race for the Western Conference title.

“From day one we spoke about being competitive and I think we’ve proved that,” St. Louis coach Bradley Carnell told mlssoccer.com. “We checked that box (for making the playoffs). Now what’s next for us? Can we get a top-four finish? Once we get that box checked, then can we win the Western Conference? So it’s all things in baby steps and stages.”

Another box that could be checked is revenge for a 1-0 home loss to Minnesota United (9-10-10, 37 points) earlier this season.

The Loons handed a then 5-0-0 St. Louis City team the first loss in team history on April 1. Luis Amarillo scored on a penalty shot in the 78th minute, and Dayne St. Clair made three saves while picking up a clean sheet.

Minnesota United enters the contest in 10th place in the West and off a bitter 4-3 loss to the LA Galaxy on Wednesday. The Loons led that one 3-1 in the second half before imploding. Defender Ethan Bristow got sent off in the 74th minute after picking up his second yellow card, and Diego Fagundez then scored the game-winner eight minutes later for the Galaxy.

“We managed to throw a game away that we should have won,” Minnesota United coach Adrian Heath told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “Moving forward, we can’t keep doing this. We can’t keep putting ourselves in great position and come away with nothing.”

The Loons enter Saturday’s contest just one point behind FC Dallas for the final playoff spot.

“It’s still in our hands,” Heath said. “There are enough points to play for, but we can’t keep doing the same stiff and expect different results.”

Bristow is suspended for Saturday’s match, and midfielder Joseph Rosales will also miss the contest with a hamstring injury. The Loons are holding their breath that star midfielder Emanuel Reynoso, who left Wednesday’s loss at halftime with a thigh injury, can play Saturday. Heath listed Reynoso as day-to-day.

MLS News: Real Salt Lake look to reverse slide against Whitecaps

0

The pressure is increasing for Real Salt Lake and their playoff push as the club hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday in Sandy, Utah.

Salt Lake (11-11-7, 40 points) is desperate to pull out of a tailspin that is threatening its postseason chances. RSL have lost four of five matches since resuming MLS regular-season play in August. Salt Lake’s offense has faded, and the defense has become toothless during the stretch.

Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to FC Dallas was a microcosm of the Utah club’s problems during this late-season slide. RSL took a halftime lead on a goal from Chicho Arango but surrendered three goals over a 15-minute span early in the second half to lose a winnable match at home. It was the first time Salt Lake lost a match this season when scoring first.

Arango has tallied at least one goal in four consecutive matches. He isn’t getting much help from his teammates on either end of the pitch.

“What we need at this moment is guys to step up and guys to really show the character, and guys who really put the team on their back,” Salt Lake coach Pablo Mastroeni said.

Vancouver (11-9-8, 41 points) historically hasn’t had much success in Utah. The Whitecaps have beaten RSL in Sandy just twice in 14 matches all-time.

Breaking through again on the road seems doable for Vancouver this time around. The Whitecaps were unbeaten in four straight road matches before falling 4-1 to Houston on Wednesday.

“It’s a good wake-up call,” Vancouver coach Vanni Sartini said of the loss to the Dynamo. “We’ve been in a kind of heaven from the last few weeks … It’s good to understand if we’re not the best version of ourselves, it’s hard to make points.”

Potent offense has spurred Vancouver’s climb up the Western Conference standings. The Whitecaps have scored eight goals in their last five road matches.

Brian White and Ryan Gauld have been an especially potent offensive duo. White has tallied 11 goals and four assists for the Whitecaps. Ryan Gauld has chipped in six goals and five assists over the past 10 matches.

RSL prevailed 2-1 over Vancouver in the most recent meeting between the clubs in February.

NHL News: Senators name Steve Staios president of hockey ops

The Ottawa Senators appointed Steve Staios as president of hockey operations on Friday.

Earlier on Friday morning, Staios resigned from his position as special adviser to hockey operations with the Edmonton Oilers.

“I am so excited that Steve is joining me in Ottawa to lead our hockey operations,” Senators new owner Michael Andlauer in a news release. “I have worked with Steve for many years and know first-hand that he will strengthen our team with his hockey acumen, attention to detail, commitment to excellence and enthusiasm for the game and its players. In hockey you can never accumulate too much talent. Having Steve and Pierre (Dorion, general manager) leading our hockey department gives us a formidable team.”

Staios, 50, served as the president (2015) and general manager (2016-22) of the Hamilton Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League prior to joining the Oilers in October.

“Steve Staios has resigned his position as a special advisor to Edmonton Oilers hockey operations to pursue another opportunity. We have accepted Steve’s resignation, thank him for his time with the club and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Oilers CEO of hockey operations Jeff Jackson said in a news release.

Staios, an Ontario native, totaled 220 points (56 goals, 164 assists) in 1,001 career games as a defenseman with the Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, Atlanta Thrashers, Oilers, Calgary Flames and New York Islanders.

Rasheen Ali rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries to lead Marshall to a 24-17 home win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Cam Fancher went 16 of 27 passing for 166 yards for the Thundering Herd (3-0).

Kyron Drones rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, and passed for 160 yards in defeat for Virginia Tech (1-3). Bhayshul Tuten rushed for 88 yards on nine carries to flank Drones for the Hokies.

Virginia Tech took the opening kickoff and scored first, taking a 7-0 lead with 11:59 left in the second quarter on a 31-yard touchdown run by Drones.

The score stayed that way until the second quarter, when Marshall tied the game at 7-7 with 14:50 left until halftime on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Fancher to DeMarcus Harris.

Following a 21-yard field goal by John Love that gave Virginia Tech a 10-7 lead with 11:47 left in the second quarter, Marshall drove the field and took a 14-10 lead with 9:10 remaining until halftime on a 56-yard touchdown run by Ali.

Rece Verhoff then made a 21-yard field goal with 2:55 left in the second quarter to give Marshall a 17-10 lead.

In the third quarter, pinned at its own 2-yard line, Marshall drove 98 yards in seven plays and took a 24-10 lead with 7:22 remaining in the third on a 1-yard touchdown run by Ali.

The big play of the drive was a 61-yard run by Ali to the Virginia Tech 18-yard line.

Virginia Tech drew closer in the fourth quarter, cutting its deficit to 24-17 with 7:14 remaining in the game on a 16-yard touchdown run by Drones.

Virginia Tech drove down to the Marshall 31-yard line in the final minute in its last attempt to tie the game, but the drive ended on downs.

NCAAF News: Kentucky starts fast, tops Vanderbilt to remain undefeated

Kentucky’s Maxwell Hairston returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns as the visiting Wildcats led wire to wire in a 45-28 SEC victory Saturday over Vanderbilt at Nashville, Tenn.

The Wildcats (4-0, 1-0 SEC) jumped out to a 21-0 lead just over 13 minutes into the game and the Commodores never got the lead within single digits after that.

Both quarterbacks struggled in a day marked by sloppy play. Vanderbilt’s AJ Swann was 16 of 40 for 189 yards and three interceptions, while Kentucky’s Devin Leary was 15 of 29 for 205 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

With Kentucky’s offense struggling to start the second half, the Wildcats’ De’Eryk Jackson intercepted Swann, giving Kentucky possession at the Vanderbilt 11 after a Commodores personal foul.

Davis powered in from 1 yard out, extending the Wildcats lead to 31-13 with 6:44 left in the third quarter.

Hairston returned another errant Swann pass 54 yards for a score with 4:15 left, giving Kentucky its final points.

The Wildcats led 24-10 at half.

Kentucky running back JuTahn McClain dashed 36 yards into the end zone on the Wildcats’ first possession for a 7-0 lead.

On Vandy’s ensuing drive, Kentucky pressured Swann leading to an interception by Harrison and 29-yard return for a TD.

Vandy intercepted Leary on the next drive. But after another Commodores three-and-out, Kentucky’s Davis’s 2-yard scoring run with 1:56 left in the first quarter made it 21-0.

The Wildcats’ Alex Raynor (27 yards) and Vandy’s Jacob Borcila (41) traded field goals, then, the Commodores got their first score on Sedrick Alexander’s 7-yard run with 20 seconds left in the half for a 24-10 lead.

It was an emotionally charged return for Davis who had 17 carries for 78 yards and two scores for Kentucky. He led Vanderbilt with 1,042 yards rushing last season. Davis and Vandy’s CJ Taylor had a confrontation as the teams headed into the tunnel for halftime.

The Commodores (2-3, 0-1), playing without starting safety De’Rickey Wright and starting corner BJ Anderson, lost starting safety Jaylen Mahoney to a targeting ejection 2 1/2 minutes into the game.

Swann exited in the fourth quarter for Vanderbilt holding his right arm after a hit.

NCAAF News: Max Johnson, defense lead Texas A&M past Auburn

Backup quarterback Max Johnson replaced injured starting quarterback Conner Weigman and threw two touchdown passes as Texas A&M topped Auburn 27-10 Saturday afternoon in College Station.

Johnson, an LSU transfer, entered the game in the second quarter after Weigman left the game with a left leg injury. He finished 7 of 11 passing for 123 yards.

Texas A&M (3-1, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) wideouts Ainias Smith (five receptions for 78 yards) and Evan Stewart (three receptions for 50 yards and a score) led the Aggies’ air attack. Tight end Jake Johnson, Max Johnson’s brother, had two receptions for 32 yards and a score.

Le’Veon Moss (15 carries for 97 yards) and Amari Daniels (five carries for 85 yards) paced Texas A&M’s ground attack, while the Aggies’ defense limited Auburn to 200 total yards and racked up seven sacks.

Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne completed 6 of 12 passes for 44 yards and was sacked five times before being replaced by backup Robby Ashford. Ashford completed just one pass for four yards.

Jarquez Hunter had nine carries for 53 yards for the Tigers (3-1, 0-1). Brian Battie rushed for 59 yards and added two receptions for 23 yards.

Texas A&M jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the opening possession of the game after kicker Randy Bond capped a 12-play, 41-yard drive with a 51-yard field goal with 9:23 to play in the first quarter.

Bond pushed the Aggies lead to 6-0 with 5:31 to play in the opening quarter when he capped a seven-play, 43-yard drive with a 32-yard field goal.

Auburn kicker Alex McPherson’s 53-yard field goal with five seconds to play until halftime cut the Aggies lead to 6-3.

After stopping Auburn on the opening possession of the second half, Johnson capped a six-play, 46-yard drive when he connected with Jake Johnson on a 22-yard touchdown pass to put Texas A&M up 13-3 with 9:42 in the third quarter.

Johnson connected with Stewart for a 37-yard scoring reception with 6:22 to go in the third quarter.

Auburn trimmed the Aggies lead to 20-10 with 12:16 to go in the game when linebacker Eugene Asante returned a fumble 67 yards for a score.
Moss capped the scoring with a 4-yard rush with 3:59 to play.

NFL News: Patriots downgrade CB Jonathan Jones to out vs. Jets

The New England Patriots downgraded cornerback Jonathan Jones and rookie offensive lineman Sidy Sow to out for Sunday’s game against the host New York Jets in East Rutherford, N.J.

Jones (ankle) and Sow (concussion) initially were listed as questionable to face the Jets (1-1).

The Patriots (0-2) will be without three of their top four cornerbacks. Both Jack Jones and Marcus Jones previously were placed on injured reserve.

Jonathan Jones, 30, had one tackle and one pass deflection in New England’s 25-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 10 before sitting out in Week 2. He has 331 tackles, 11 interceptions and eight forced fumbles in 102 career games (44 starts) with the Patriots.

Sow, 25, was a fourth-round pick of New England in April. He started the Patriots’ season-opening loss to the Eagles.

NFL News: Bengals signing A.J. McCarron with Joe Burrow questionable

The Cincinnati Bengals are listing Joe Burrow as questionable for Monday night and adding another quarterback to the practice squad for insurance, NFL Network and ESPN reported Saturday.

As Burrow deals with a lingering right calf injury, the team brought in former Bengals quarterback A.J. McCarron for a workout on Saturday before signing him to the practice squad, per the reports.

If Burrow is unavailable for the Bengals (0-2) against the visiting Los Angeles Rams (1-1), Jake Browning would be in line to make his first NFL start on Monday night.

Cincinnati signed quarterback Reid Sinnett to the practice squad on Friday after losing Will Grier off the practice squad to the New England Patriots.

McCarron, 33, was a fifth-round pick by Cincinnati in 2014 and was with the Bengals through 2017.

McCarron last played in an NFL game with the Houston Texans in 2020. Playing for the St. Louis BattleHawks, the former Alabama star led the XFL with 24 touchdown passes during the 2023 season.

McCarron is 2-2 as a starter in the NFL, throwing for 1,173 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions in 17 appearances with the Bengals (2015-17), then-Oakland Raiders (2018) and Texans (2019-20).

Former Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals quarterback Trace McSorley reportedly worked out for the team on Saturday.
