FIFA News: 2030 World Cup to be held in 6 countries across 3 continents

The World Cup will be very different when the 2030 edition rolls around.

FIFA and global soccer leaders reached agreement Wednesday to accept one bidder that grew from Spain-Portugal to include Morocco, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay in a tournament that is set to be played on three continents in six countries.

Among the key considerations was finding a way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the World Cup in Uruguay, where the inaugural tourney final was held in 1930.

Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay are targeted to host kickoff matches to begin the 2030 World Cup, with a specific aim to play in Montevideo, capital of Uruguay and home of the 1930 Cup final.

“The centennial World Cup could not be far from South America, where everything began,” said Alejandro Dominguez, the president of South American soccer body CONMEBOL. “The 2030 World Cup will be played in three continents.”

FIFA will allow all six of those countries’ national teams to receive automatic entries, and Morocco will be the first North Africa nation to host the event.

The 2030 decision has sped up the process of finding a home for the 2034 World Cup, which is to be held in Asia or Oceania, likely in November and December.

Saudi Arabia now becomes the primary candidate for the 2034 edition.

The 2030 FIFA agreement still must meet formal approval in 2024 during a meeting of the 211 member federations.

“In 2030,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement, “we will have a unique global footprint, three continents — Africa, Europe and South America — six countries — Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay — welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the FIFA World Cup.”

The current size of the World Cup, 32 teams, moves to 48 beginning with the 2026 event that will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Football Supporters Europe, a fan group that the Union of European Football Associations officially recognizes, expressed its displeasure with the great lengths of travel to be required in 2030 and believes that will promote Saudi Arabia’s 2034 candidacy.

“FIFA continues its cycle of destruction against the greatest tournament on earth,” an FSE statement said. “Horrendous for supporters, disregards the environment and rolls the red carpet out to a host for 2034 with an appalling human rights record.”

The 104-match 2030 tournament is set to run in June and July.

PGA News: Peter Malnati retracts calling Lexi Thompson in PGA Tour event ‘gimmick’

0

Peter Malnati hasn’t been shy when it comes to sharing his opinions since joining the PGA Tour policy board, but he found himself choosing his words very carefully when speaking about Lexi Thompson on Tuesday.

Thompson, who owns 11 career LPGA victories, was given an exemption for next week’s Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas, which is a PGA Tour event. Malnati was surprised by the move, stating that the Tour doesn’t need to “resort to gimmicks,” but he quickly had a change of heart.

“I shouldn’t have said that,” Malnati said. “I don’t know that having Lexi play is a gimmick, but I don’t think the tournaments are going to have to go to those kind of lengths to drum up interest and get storylines that they can sell because I think these events are actually going to have a lot of meaning.

“Like I said, change is hard for everyone at every level, so I assume if you’re a host organization of a tournament … you just don’t know right now for sure what you have anymore because the fall is completely reimagined.”

At the very least, Malnati does believe Thompson’s entry into the 132-woman field will catch people’s eye.

“Having Lexi play certainly will get a lot of headlines, and if that’s the goal for Shriners and the host organization in Vegas there, that’s great,” Malnati said. “Obviously, she’s a professional athlete. She’s accomplished a lot.”

Malnati, 36, stuck to his steadfast opinion back in June, when he made comments regarding a lack of trust that players have in the Tour following its framework agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. He noted that it would take time for the relationship between the two sides to be fixed.

Malnati will be playing in this week’s Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Miss. He last appeared in the Fortinet Championship, finishing tied for 11th on Sept. 17.

NAS News: Iowa debut highlights 2024 NASCAR Cup Series schedule

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Iowa Speedway will make its NASCAR Cup Series debut next year, part of the 2024 schedules announced on Wednesday for the all of NASCAR’s top series.

The seven-eighths-of-a-mile short track in Newton, Iowa, follows a number of other venues that have hosted Cup Series races for the first time in recent years. The list includes the Chicago Street Race, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and World Wide Technology Raceway.

Iowa Speedway hosted the Xfinity Series and Craftsman Truck Series from 2009 to 2019, but this time the sport’s biggest stars in the NASCAR Cup Series will head to Iowa on Sunday, June 16, 2024. The race will air live on USA Network at 7 p.m. ET.

“NASCAR is committed to delivering an annual schedule that continues to be bold and dynamic across all three national series while maintaining the famed destinations that our fans love,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR senior vice president of racing development and strategy. “The 2024 NASCAR national series schedules strike a great balance between visiting many of our traditional tracks that continue to put on a great show, and newer locations like our first Cup race in Iowa and our highly anticipated return to the streets of Chicago that create ‘bucket list’ moments and attract new fans to America’s leading motorsport.”

The 2024 Cup Series season will commence with the already announced third installment of the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, Calif. on Sunday, Feb. 4, on FOX and FOX Deportes at 8 p.m. ET. For the first time in Cup Series history, a NASCAR Mexico Series race will precede the main event on Sunday afternoon, featuring the most talented drivers from Mexico’s premier motorsports series.

The running of the 66th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway again marks the start of the Cup Series regular season on Sunday, Feb. 18, airing live on FOX at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Some additional highlights to the NASCAR Cup Series schedule worth noting are both 2024 races at Richmond Raceway will now take place in prime time — the first on Easter Sunday, March 31 (7 p.m. ET, FOX) and the second on Sunday, August 11 (6 p.m. ET, USA Network).

NASCAR also returns to the concrete high banks at Bristol Motor Speedway for the spring race (Sunday, March 17, 3:30 p.m. ET, FOX).

The NASCAR Cup Series’ annual All-Star Race (Sunday, May 19, 8 p.m. ET, FS1) will return to historic North Wilkesboro Speedway. Kyle Larson took home the $1 million prize this season in NASCAR’s return to the venue for the first time since 1996.

Round two in the streets of Chicago will be on Sunday, July 7 (4:30 p.m. ET, NBC), which saw Shane van Gisbergen take the checkered flag in an action-packed 2023 event.

NASCAR will also return to the traditional oval at The Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400 on Sunday, July 21 (2:30 p.m. ET, NBC) after a three-year stint running the road course.

The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs will begin one week later in 2024, with the regular-season finale taking place at Darlington Raceway (Sunday, Sept. 1, 6 p.m. ET, USA Network) and Daytona International Speedway hosting the penultimate race of the regular season (Saturday, Aug. 24, 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC).

The opening race of the NASCAR playoffs will be at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 8 (3 p.m. ET, USA Network) with the crowning of a champion in the desert at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, Nov. 10 (3 p.m., NBC). Watkins Glen International (Sunday, Sept. 15, 3 p.m. ET, USA Network) will also join the NASCAR playoffs mix and help set the tone in a new-look Round of 16.

The Xfinity Series schedule is highlighted by a triumphant return to Iowa Speedway on Saturday, June 15 (3:30 p.m. ET, USA Network) — the series’ first visit to the short track since 2019.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series will also have an update to the playoff schedule, visiting Talladega Superspeedway for a second time in 2024 on Saturday, Oct. 5, which will air live on NBC at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The Xfinity Series will also join the Cup Series on the streets of Chicago for the second consecutive year over the Fourth of July Weekend (Saturday, July 6, 2:30 p.m. ET, NBC).

Bristol Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway will swap stops on the schedule, with The Last Great Colosseum becoming the regular-season finale (Friday, Sept. 20, 7:30 p.m. ET, USA Network) and the playoffs opener taking place at Kansas Speedway (Saturday, Sept. 28, 3:30 p.m. ET, USA Network).

The Craftsman Truck Series will return to Martinsville Speedway for the penultimate race in the Round of 8 (Friday, Nov. 1, 6 p.m. ET, FS1), setting the stage for the finale at Phoenix Raceway on Friday, Nov. 8 (8 p.m. ET on FS1). Additionally, Richmond Raceway becomes the regular-season finale (Saturday, Aug. 10, 7:30 p.m., FS1) while Milwaukee Mile Speedway returns to the schedule, this time as the playoffs opener on Sunday, Aug. 25 (4 p.m. ET, FS1).

Some additional shuffling of the postseason includes Kansas Speedway becoming the first cut-off race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series playoffs’ Round of 10 (Friday, Sept. 27, 8:30 p.m. ET, FS1) and Talladega Superspeedway becoming the opening race in the Round of 8 (Friday, Oct. 4, 5 p.m. ET, FS1).

The US Supreme Court is set to determine whether state laws that restrict social media platforms violate the Constitution.

Image by Erik Lucatero from Pixabay

Three days before the start of its new term, the court made its announcement as the justices continue to debate the applicability of rules from the early days of the internet to today’s online landscape. The Supreme Court decided on Friday to rule on the constitutionality of state laws that aim to regulate Facebook, TikTok, X, Instagram, and other social media platforms.

The justices will examine measures passed by Republican-controlled legislatures in Florida and Texas and signed by Republican governors. Both regulations, though they have different specifics, are meant to stop social media corporations from limiting users based on their political views.

The United States Supreme Court is now poised to weigh in on a significant legal question: whether state laws aimed at limiting the activities of social media platforms violate the U.S. Constitution.

The US Supreme Court has said that during its forthcoming nine-month term, it will rule on the constitutionality of state legislation in Texas and Florida that restricts the power of social media companies to filter content. These state legislation, passed in 2021, are allegedly in violation of the First Amendment’s safeguards for free speech, according to two lawsuits lodged by organizations representing the technology sector, including NetChoice and the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA).

Organic Greek Vitamin Bottles and Multivitamin Gummies

Justices Barrett, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, Brett Kavanaugh, and Chief Justice John Roberts voted in favor of approving the emergency request made by two technology sector groups that had filed a legal challenge against the statute.

The laws would have continued to be in force if they had been upheld by Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Elena Kagan, and Neil Gorsuch. Alito expressed disapproval in his dissenting opinion, stating that “social media platforms have transformed the way people communicate with each other and obtain news.”

According to Texas law, social media businesses with more than 50 million active users per month are not allowed to ban people based on their political views. Users or the Texas attorney general may file a lawsuit to compel compliance with the legislation. Large platforms are required by Florida law to host some speeches that they might otherwise choose not to, like those of political candidates or media organizations.

These laws have been the subject of conflicting rulings from lower courts. Certain parts of the Florida statute have been declared unlawful, but the Texas law has been upheld. Conservative voices are silenced by social media platforms, according to proponents of these legislation, who cite instances like the suspension of then-President Donald Trump’s Twitter account after the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol as proof. On the other side, those who support content moderation stress the need for it in order to combat false information and extremist content. The Supreme Court’s decision will clarify the matter by determining how governments can control the content on non-public platforms

Quantum Dots Used in LED Lights Receive Nobel Prize in Chemistry

0

A team of innovative researchers has been honored with the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their ground-breaking work on quantum dots, a spectacular accomplishment that has transformed the LED lighting industry.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Chemistry was awarded to scientists Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Alexei Ekimov for “the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots,” which brighten computer and television displays and are used by physicians to track tumors.

Before relocating to the United States, Ekimov, who was born in the Soviet Union, worked for the Vavilov State Optical Institute. Ekimov was appointed head scientist of Nanocrystals Technology Inc. in 1999.

Brus is an emeritus professor at Columbia University, Ekimov works for Nanocrystals Technology Inc., and Bawendi teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

In 1972, Brus was employed by AT&T Bell Labs, where he worked for 23 years, spending a lot of that time on nanocrystals.

Nanoscale semiconductor particles known as quantum dots have special features that have altered how we create and interpret light. This acknowledgement of their achievements not only shows the significant significance of their study but also the importance of quantum dots in our daily lives.

Tiny wonders with enormous potential: quantum dots. Small semiconductor particles called quantum dots, which are frequently only a few nanometers in size, have extraordinary optical and electrical capabilities. The quantum confinement effect, which limits the motion of electrons and holes within the system, is responsible for these features.

These characteristics result from the quantum confinement effect, which limits the movement of holes and electrons within the substance. Due to their small size and ability to generate certain hues of light when heated, quantum dots are well suited for use in a variety of industries, including LED lighting, displays, and even medical imaging.

WTA News: Jelena Ostapenko jolts Jessica Pegula in Beijing

0

Jelena Ostapenko recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals at the China Open in Beijing.

Ostapenko, the 13th seed from Latvia, collected 24 winners against 11 unforced errors to win the match in 78 minutes.

“I think I always play quite well in China,” said Ostapenko, a 2017 semifinalist in Beijing. “Finally tournaments are back here and with a lot of fans, which I like a lot.

“After the U.S. Open, I had a bit more confidence and I had really good preparation before that.

“Some matches during the year were close. I was losing them, but they were very close. I felt like at some point they have to go my way. It’s working now.”

Ostapenko avenged an early-season loss to Pegula in Doha. Pegula posted a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory in that match.

“Just in general, I think I played well but it was not easy because the court was very slow and the rallies were super long. I felt the court is a bit slower than other tournaments,” Ostapenko said.

“I felt like if you go for very dangerous shots it didn’t really work on these courts,” Ostapenko said. “So I tried to open the point up and when I had the chance, just to finish it. Playing more angles worked pretty well.”

Ostapenko advanced to play Russian Liudmila Samsonova, who needed 2 hours and 55 minutes to post a 6-5, 6-7 (4), 7-5 win over Marta Kostyuk of the Ukraine.

Pegula finished with 12 winners against 12 unforced errors in a losing effort.

Also on Wednesday, second-seeded Iga Swiatek breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Polish compatriot Magda Linette in 65 minutes.

Swiatek won 84.2 percent of her first-serve points (16 of 19) to advance to face either ninth-seeded Caroline Garcia of France of Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine.

“I felt like I was playing a good game and I was in control from the beginning to the end,” Swiatek said. “I’m happy that I was consistent. I didn’t have ups and downs in the match, so it doesn’t matter who I’m playing. If I play like that, I feel really confident.”

Fifth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan overcame a first-set misstep to notch a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 third-round victory over 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva of Russia in 1 hour, 49 minutes.

Rybakina, a former Wimbledon champion, won 10 of the last 11 games to set up a quarterfinal clash against either World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus or Italian Jasmine Paolini.

ATP News: Marc Polmans apologizes for hitting chair umpire with ball

0

Marc Polmans apologized for hitting a tennis ball into the face of the chair umpire, leading to his disqualification during final-round qualifying at the Shanghai Masters.

Polmans was leading 7-6 (3), 6-6 (6-5) and facing match point against Italy’s Stefano Napolitano on Tuesday when he vented his frustration following a missed shot. The 26-year-old Australian swatted the ball as it rebounded off the net, resulting in it hitting chair umpire Ben Anderson.

Anderson did not appear to be seriously injured.

“An update from me – the umpire, Ben, has accepted my apology for my actions,” Polmans wrote late Tuesday on Twitter. “He knows it was unintentional, and I shanked the ball on the frame in frustration in the heat of the moment.

“We both move on. It was a high-pressure situation and I should have reacted better.”

ATP News: ATP roundup: Jannik Sinner captures Beijing crown

0

No. 6 seed Jannik Sinner finally broke through for a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) victory against Daniil Medvedev to capture the China Open title on Wednesday in Beijing.

The 22-year-old Italian had lost his first six matches against the second-seeded Russian before prevailing in a little over 2 hours to claim his ninth title.

Sinner finished with 29 winners and 13 unforced errors, compared to 26 and 11 for Medvedev. Neither player was able to convert a break point, but Sinner’s superior play at the net (23-8 edge in points) and in the tiebreaks made the difference.

“Daniil, thanks for letting me win at least one match,” Sinner said during the trophy ceremony. “We have had some very tough battles, especially this year. Thanks for making me a much better player. I have been training a lot to beat you. My team are working a lot. Thank you very much and it is special to share this moment with you.”

Rolex Shanghai Masters

China’s Zhizhen Zhang raced to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Frenchman Richard Gasquet as action got underway at the ATP 1000 tournament. It was the 26-year-old’s first main-draw victory in his hometown tournament.

“I was very nervous before the match because I had never had a success in Shanghai,” Zhang said. “Finally, in 2023, I got a first win, so I’m super happy about it.”

Zhang struck 27 winners to Gasquet’s six and never faced a break point in the 55-minute win. Ranked No. 60 in the world, Zhang fired 11 aces and converted five of his 11 break chances.

He entered the Shanghai event with more pressure than in the past after becoming the first Chinese men’s player ever to beat a top-5 opponent when he defeated Casper Ruud at the U.S. Open in August.

“It is more pressure, because more people are following me and more people have eyes on me, but I’m happy like this,” Zhang said. “It’s better than no one seeing you… The fans are super great, as well as my friends and family, so I appreciate them coming (to support me).”

His opponent in the second round will be Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No. 28 seed.

Russia’s Roman Safiullin knocked out three-time Shanghai champion Andy Murray of Great Britain 6-3, 6-2. He converted five of eight break points and will take on ninth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany in a rematch of last month’s Chengdu final.

Americans Mackenzie McDonald, Marcos Giron and Brandon Nakashima advanced in straight sets. Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic eliminated Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6 (7). Other winners include Marton Fucsovics of Hungary, Cristian Garin of Chile, Yannick Hanfmann of Germany, Jaume Munar of Spain, Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan and Australians Thanasi Kokkinakis and Dane Sweeny.

Home favorite and wild-card entry Buyunchaokete, a 21-year-old who goes by one name, won his ATP Tour debut. He was leading Miomir Kecmanovic 6-7 (6), 6-2, 2-1 when the Serbian was forced to retire.

Garin will face No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the second round. Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz of Spain awaits the winner between France’s Gregoire Barrere and Portugal’s Nuno Borges.

PREM News: Wrexham striker Paul Mullin on standby for Wales

Wales manager Rob Page confirmed that Wrexham striker Paul Mullin has been placed on standby for upcoming matches against Gibraltar and Croatia.

Mullin recently returned to action for Wrexham after suffering a collapsed lung and four broken ribs during the clubs preseason tour in America ahead of its return to League Two. He scored twice in Saturday’s 3-3 draw against Crewe Alexandra ahead of Tuesday’s scoreless draw against Mansfield Town.

Wales is preparing for a sold-out friendly with Gibralter at Wrexham’s The Racecourse Ground on Oct. 11, followed by a Euro 2024 qualifier against Croatia in Cardiff on Oct. 15.

Mullin, who has 81 goals in 102 appearances since joining Wrexham in 2021, plays internationally for Wales through his grandmother.

“Paul is on standby for the squad. I watched Paul against Sheffield United last year, and Jack Lester – my coach, who was at Sheffield United at the time – sang his praises,” Page told reporters Wednesday.

“We’ve had a few conversations about Paul, so the next step is he’s now on standby and he’s one step away.

“We monitor the Welsh players, and Paul is certainly one we’ve taken note of – and he deserves that. This is the next step of his development.”

Page made the comments while at The Racecourse Ground, which will play host to a Wales match for the first time since the team faced Trinidad & Tobago at the world’s oldest international football stadium in 2019.

“It’s massive for us. On behalf of all the players we want to thank the North Walian supporters, who always travel to watch us,” he said.

“To come up to Wrexham, and show them that respect, and give them the opportunity to be at home, is just a small price for us to pay (to thank them).

“We’re looking forward to it. It was the home of Welsh football when I was growing up, and I watched many internationals from here when I was younger, and on the TV with Rushy and Mark Hughes. For us to be coming back up here to play again is exciting.”
