Haley Cavinder plots hoops return, enters transfer portal

Haley Cavinder plans to transfer from Miami with her focus on returning to college basketball next season.

Cavinder and twin sister Hanna spent last season on the Hurricanes’ roster but said in April they planned to join WWE and end their hoops journey.

Haley Cavinder, a 5-foot-6 guard, averaged 12.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists last season. She is likely to be coveted in the portal if she chooses to leave Miami and has 2,065 career points entering her fifth season of eligibility.

The twins have more than 5 million social media followers, who were the first to know Haley intends to get back on the court. She posted a photo overlaid with an all-caps statement “See you next season” to Instagram on Friday.

Multiple outlets confirmed Haley Cavinder entered the transfer portal.

Hanna plans to remain retired, her agent told ESPN.

The 22-year-old twins helped Miami reach the Elite Eight as a No. 9 seed in March, beating Oklahoma State, Villanova and Indiana before losing to national champion LSU.

Social media superstars, the Gilbert, Ariz., natives spent their first three seasons at Fresno State and transferred to Miami for the 2022-23 campaign.

The twins are in the top five of all NIL earners across sports. They will continue deals with Champs Sports and others.

James Harden hasn’t changed tune about 76ers

James Harden was asked again Friday if his fractured relationship with the Philadelphia 76ers front office and general manager Daryl Morey could be repaired, and his answer was instant and emphatic.

“No,” he said.

Time doesn’t appear to have changed the stance of Harden, who in August told reporters he didn’t expect he could get past issues with Morey.

“This is in life,” he told reporters Friday. “When you lose trust in someone, it’s like a marriage. … I wanted to retire a Sixer. And the front office didn’t have that in their future plans.”

Harden has voiced his desire to be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers as the third star on the team, joining Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. The Sixers and Clippers haven’t made progress on a potential deal, though has said “we are continuing to work with his representation to find the best solution for the 76ers and all parties.”

Harden, a six-time first-team All-NBA player acquired twice by Morey, has soured on his boss, made clear when he spoke in August at an Adidas event in China.

“Daryl Morey is a liar, and I will never be a part of an organization that he’s a part of,” Harden said then. “Let me say that again: Daryl Morey is a liar, and I will never be a part of an organization that he’s a part of.”

Harden, 34, already has been paid half of the $35.64 million due to him this year — a prepayment option many players choose to take — according to ESPN.

Despite his displeasure in Philadelphia, Harden reported to training camp but remains hopeful of a trade. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the season.

A 14-year veteran who has played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Brooklyn Nets and 76ers, Harden has career averages of 24.7 points, 7.0 assists and 5.6 rebounds in 1,000 games (786 starts). He led the league in scoring three times, and last year, his 10.7 assists per game were the most in the NBA.

A 10-time All-Star, Harden was the league’s Most Valuable Player in the 2017-18 season.

Hornets’ Miles Bridges turns himself into authorities

Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges turned himself in to North Carolina authorities on Friday morning after an arrest warrant was issued for an alleged violation of a domestic violence protective order.

Bridges, 25, surrendered to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and later appeared before a district judge prior to being released on $1,000 bail, a public information officer told The Associated Press.

Bridges pleaded no contest to a felony domestic violence charge last November in Los Angeles and was sentenced to three years of probation with no jail time. He was accused of assaulting the mother of his two children in May 2022.

His sentencing agreement included a 10-year criminal protection order for the woman as well as weekly narcotics and marijuana testing, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

After his court case was concluded, the NBA suspended Bridges for 30 games. He has 20 games credited, so he will only miss the first 10 games of the 2023-24 season.

Bridges was the Hornets’ leading scorer with 20.2 points per game during the 2021-22 season. He last played on April 10, 2022.

Despite his battle with dementia, Bruce Willis is not “totally verbal.”

Prior to disclosing his dementia diagnosis in February, Willis’ family revealed that the actor had been given an aphasia diagnosis the previous year.

Her family’s statement read, “Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed, and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD). Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,” his family wrote in a statement on the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration’s website.

According to “Moonlighting” writer Glenn Gordon Caron, who told the New York Post that the actor is “not totally verbal” despite his struggle with frontotemporal dementia.

The 68-year-old actor’s friend Caron revealed that while Willis still recognizes him when he visits, he has seen some differences. He said, “My sense is the first one to three minutes he knows who I am,” he said. “Willis used to be a voracious reader, he didn’t want anyone to know that -and he’s not reading now. All those language skills are no longer available to him, and yet he’s still Bruce.”

American actor Bruce Willis is currently retired. He rose to stardom after landing the lead in the comedy-drama series Moonlighting. He has since acted in more than a hundred movies, and his depiction of John McClane in the Die-Hard series helped him establish himself as an action star.

For over thirteen years, Willis and actress Demi Moore were married, and they share custody of their three daughters.

MLB News: Rangers’ Max Scherzer, Orioles’ John Means left off ALDS rosters

Texas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer and Baltimore Orioles left-hander John Means were left off their respective team’s rosters for their upcoming American League Division Series.

The Rangers’ move comes one day after Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, faced live batters for the time since straining the teres major muscle in his right shoulder on Sept. 12.

“He pitched yesterday and threw well and he said he felt pretty good this morning, but we felt like we didn’t have enough information to include him on the roster,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday. “He was going to miss the first two games anyway. He’ll keep progressing, and we’ll see where he stands in a few days.”

The Rangers acquired Scherzer from the New York Mets at the trade deadline. The 39-year-old went 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts for Texas before being placed on the 15-day injured list on Sept. 13.

The Rangers added left-hander Cody Bradford in place of right-hander Grant Anderson, who was on the team’s wild-card roster.

Means, who was a possible candidate to start Game 3 of the best-of-five series, is nursing a sore elbow. The 30-year-old is 1-2 with a 2.66 ERA in four starts since returning from Tommy John surgery in September.

MLB News: Braves’ Kyle Wright to miss 2024 with shoulder injury

Atlanta Braves right-hander Kyle Wright will need a shoulder procedure and is expected to miss the 2024 regular season, manager Brian Snitker said Saturday.

The Braves put Wright, 28, on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain earlier Saturday in advance of their National League Division Series matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies. An MRI on Friday revealed the extent of Wright’s shoulder damage.

Atlanta recalled left-hander Max Fried and right-hander Daysbel Hernandez from the 15- and 60-day injured lists, respectively. Both were added to the NLDS roster, while right-hander Jesse Chavez was dropped.

Over the past three postseasons, Wright was 2-1 with a 3.93 ERA in five games (three starts). In last season’s NLDS against the Phillies, Wright threw six scoreless two-hit innings in a game Atlanta eventually lost.

But this season was marred by injury and inconsistency, with Wright appearing in just nine games (seven starts), posting a 1-3 record with a 6.97 ERA in 31 innings.

“You could tell in his last couple outings something wasn’t right.” Snitker said Saturday.

MLB.com reported that Hernandez impressed the Braves’ brass during two intrasquad games this week.

Hernandez, 27, appeared in just four games and threw 3 2/3 innings before going on the injured list with right forearm inflammation. He was 1-0 with a 7.36 ERA.

Fried, 29, was bothered by a blister issue in September but Snitker pronounced him ready to go this week. On the season, he was 8-1 with a 2.55 ERA in 14 games, limited to just 77 2/3 innings because of a left forearm strain.

In his postseason career, Fried is 2-4 with a 4.43 ERA in 18 games (10 starts).

Chavez, 40, was 1-0 with a 1.56 ERA and a save in 36 games (one start). He was part of Atlanta’s World Series-winning team in 2021.

MLB News: Rangers RHP Max Scherzer encouraged after facing live hitters

Texas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer faced live batters Friday for the time in 24 days and was encouraged with how his right shoulder felt.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner was encouraged with the two-inning simulated session of nearly 40 pitches and is hopeful of pitching for the Rangers this postseason.

“I felt good,” Scherzer said after the stint in Baltimore. “I’ve got to recover. I’ve got to see how I wake up tomorrow and see what this does to the arm.”

Texas won an American League wild-card series over the Tampa Bay Rays and begins the AL Division Series against the Orioles on Saturday.

Scherzer strained the teres major muscle in his right shoulder on Sept. 12, and there were concerns he wouldn’t pitch again this season.

But the 39-year-old had a pain-free bullpen session on Wednesday followed by Friday’s appearance in which Mitch Garver was the only player to hit the ball hard against him.

Suddenly, he’s open to playing any role he can — even in this series against Baltimore.

“That’s not my decision,” Scherzer said. “We’ll have a discussion about it. But it’s October and all hands on deck. I’ll do whatever it takes to help the team.”

The Rangers acquired Scherzer from the New York Mets at the trade deadline. He went 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts for Texas before being placed on the 15-day injured list on Sept. 13.

The eight-time All-Star is 214-108 with a 3.15 ERA with six teams, including 6 1/2 seasons with the Washington Nationals and five with the Detroit Tigers.

Left-handers Andrew Heaney and Jordan Montgomery will pitch the first two games of the series for Texas with right-hander Nathan Eovaldi a near-certainty for Game 3.

MLB News: Dodgers’ World Series push starts with pesky Diamondbacks

At face value, it appears to be another typical Los Angeles Dodgers playoff series ahead, with Clayton Kershaw starting in Game 1 of the National League Division Series Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Yet this matchup promises to be something new entirely.

In the playoffs for the 11th consecutive year, but with one 2020 World Series title to show for it, perhaps it was time for the Dodgers to unveil something different.

Los Angeles will employ a group-effort pitching strategy, with shorter starts, possible bullpen games and a “piggy-back” plan where two or more pitchers throw multiple innings each.

While it sounds like a full buy-in on next-level analytics, the Dodgers instead are operating out of necessity because of injury, performance uncertainty and the arrival of several rookie pitchers getting their first taste of the playoffs.

“That’s where we’re at as a team (and) I think that’s a great thing, I really do,” Kershaw said. “As far as embracing it or not, I think everybody’s in the mindset that we just want to help this team win a World Series. And so however that looks, whatever (manager Dave Roberts) thinks is best for us to go out there and pitch, that’s what we’re going to do.”

Since returning from a shoulder injury in August, Kershaw has been limited to five innings in all but one of his eight outings, and that was 5 1/3 innings in his regular-season finale. He has not thrown more than 84 pitches in any of those starts.

Those figure to be his limits moving forward, with the Dodgers’ bullpen stepping into the fray. If history holds, the Dodgers like their chances Saturday with Kershaw posting a 22-12 record and a 2.73 ERA in 44 career regular-season starts against Arizona.

There won’t be any shuffling of the deck on offense, with the Dodgers led by four 100-RBI performers in Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, J.D. Martinez and Max Muncy. Betts, Freeman, Martinez and Will Smith were All-Stars.

An impressive group in Arizona is set to announce its arrival, led by NL Rookie of the Year favorite Corbin Carroll, who is getting the biggest stage to show off his impressive blend of speed and power.

Carroll hit 25 home runs with 54 stolen bases in his first full season, then took the wild-card round by storm when he went 4-for-7 with a double, home run and two RBIs in a two-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Even more youth will be served by the Diamondbacks, who lost 110 games as recently as 2021 and haven’t won a postseason contest since 2011. Outfielder Alek Thomas, catcher Gabriel Moreno and infielder Geraldo Perdomo all have made an impact.

“I’ll give them their props,” Carroll said of the Dodgers, according to mlb.com. “You know, they’re a great team. Just a great lineup, good pitching, but you know, we’ve played them all year, we know what they are, we know what they’re not. You know, I wouldn’t count us out.”

When the Dodgers swept a three-game home series between the teams in late August, they outscored the D-backs 23-5. Los Angeles won eight of the 13 regular-season meetings.

Arizona will send right-hander Merrill Kelly to the mound in Game 1. And while he was impressive in the 2023 regular season, Kelly (12-8, 3.29 ERA) has a terrible history against the Dodgers. In 16 career regular-season starts vs. Los Angeles, he is 0-11 with a 5.49 ERA, while Betts has three home runs and a .351 on-base percentage against him.

“For whatever reason, there are certain players and certain teams throughout your career and your life in baseball that you kind of run into that just seem to have your number,” Kelly said. “Unfortunately, throughout my career, this team seems to be that team for me. But I’m as confident as ever.”

While Moreno departed early in Arizona’s wild-card clincher Wednesday after he was hit in the head by a Brewers backswing, he is likely to play Saturday. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said on Friday that Moreno passed all tests and had no concussion symptoms.

Rare Ring of Fire eclipse to be seen in US, coast to coast

0
Credit ssuaphotos

A rare ‘Ring of Fire’ eclipse will be seen across the nation on Saturday, October 14. This celestial event is unique as the solar eclipse will be visible across the nation from the east coast to the west coast, weather permitting. However, people in the U.S. should take precautions and not look directly at the eclipse. It is dangerous to do so as it causes damage to the eyes. People should use special eclipse glasses or pinhole projectors.

The moon will almost cover the sun entirely and a “ring of fire” will be visible in some regions. There will be an orange hued ring around the shadow of the moon and hence it is termed the ring of fire. Some locations will observe a partial eclipse.

The natural showstopper might be seen for three minutes and up to five minutes in certain locations. The entire annular solar eclipse is expected to last between two and a half to three hours at certain locations.

If the weather permits, the ring of fire or a partial eclipse will be seen by skywatchers in the following states:
Oregon
Nevada
New Mexico and
Texas.

It will also be seen in parts of
Arizona
California
Colorado and
Idaho.

Organic Greek Vitamin Bottles and Multivitamin Gummies

On Saturday, the path of annularity or the full ring of fire effect will be seen in a roughly 125-mile path that stretches from Oregon south to Texas and also cuts through Central and South America. Many skywatchers in North America might be able to see a “partial solar eclipse.”

Solar eclipses are much anticipated events as they can be viewed only from specific parts of our planet. It is uncommon for an annular solar eclipse to be seen across the nation from the Pacific Coast to the Gulf Coast. So, the solar eclipse on Saturday October 14, 2023 is a unique event. The next ring of fire eclipse that is expected to be seen across the U.S. will occur on February 2046.

NASA will live stream the entire celestial event. Its website also offers instructions on how to safely observe the solar eclipse and more, and includes instructions on how to make a pinhole projector in your home.

What to Know About NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications

0

NASA

Scheduled for launch on October 13 alongside the Psyche mission, DSOC is set to showcase cutting-edge technologies that will empower NASA to achieve higher data transmission rates in deep space.

NASA’s groundbreaking Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment represents a groundbreaking leap in the realm of laser-based, or optical, communications. This innovation marks the first instance of such communication technology being utilized from a distance as far as Mars. The DSOC launch coincides with NASA’s mission to explore the metal-rich asteroid known as Psyche, and its primary objective is to put to the test pivotal technologies designed to enable forthcoming missions to transmit richer scientific data and potentially even stream video content from the Red Planet.

Here is a brief overview of this cutting-edge technology demonstration.

DSOC is the first time NASA will test how lasers could increase data transmission from deep space. Until now, NASA has used only radio waves to communicate with missions that travel beyond the Moon. Much like fiber optics replacing old telephone lines on Earth as demand for data grows, going from radio communications to optical communications will allow increased data rates throughout the solar system, with 10 to 100 times the capacity of state-of-the-art systems currently used by spacecraft.

The tech demo involves equipment both in space and on Earth. The DSOC flight laser transceiver is an experiment attached to NASA’s Psyche spacecraft, but Psyche relies on traditional radio communications for mission operations.

The tech demo involves equipment both in space and on Earth. The DSOC flight laser transceiver is an experiment attached to NASA’s Psyche spacecraft, but Psyche relies on traditional radio communications for mission operations. The laser transceiver features both a near-infrared laser transmitter to send high-rate data to Earth and a sensitive photon-counting camera to receive a laser beam sent from Earth.

Organic Greek Vitamin Bottles and Multivitamin Gummies

DSOC will encounter unique challenges. DSOC is intended to demonstrate high-rate transmission of data of distances up to 240 million miles (390 million kilometers) – more than twice the distance between the Sun and Earth – during the first two years of Psyche’s six-year journey to the asteroid belt.

Cutting-edge technologies will work together to make sure the lasers are on target and high-bandwidth data is received from deep space. The flight laser transceiver and ground-based laser transmitter will need to point with great precision. Reaching their targets will be akin to hitting a dime from a mile away while the dime is moving.  So, the transceiver needs to be isolated from the spacecraft vibrations, which would otherwise nudge the laser beam off target.

This is NASA’s latest optical communications project. In 2013, NASA’s Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration tested record-breaking uplink and downlink data rates between Earth and the Moon. In 2021, NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration launched to test high-bandwidth optical communications relay capabilities from geostationary orbit so that spacecraft don’t require a direct line of sight with Earth to communicate. And last year, NASA’s TeraByte InfraRed Delivery system downlinked the highest-ever data rate from a satellite in low-Earth orbit to a ground-based receiver.
