MLB News: Bobby Witt Jr.’s bomb in extras gives Royals win over A’s

Bobby Witt Jr. smacked a tiebreaking three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning and the Kansas City Royals stretched their winning streak to a season-best four games with a 4-1 victory over the Athletics on Tuesday night at West Sacramento, Calif.

Salvador Perez also homered for Kansas City, which has won five of six contests following an eight-game skid. Maikel Garcia and Perez each had two hits in the opener of a three-game series.

Jacob Wilson had an RBI single and Shea Langeliers had three hits for the Athletics, who left 14 runners on base.

Nick Mears (2-1) worked a perfect ninth. Lucas Erceg walked Carlos Cortes with two out in the bottom of the 10th before Zack Gelof reached on an infield hit to load the bases.

Erceg then retired Darell Hernaiz on a soft liner to second to post his seventh save.

The Royals had runners on first and second with no outs in the 10th against Justin Sterner (1-3) before Garcia popped up a bunt that Langeliers caught in foul territory. Witt then came up and hit the second pitch to right-center, and the ball barely cleared the short wall for his second homer in two games. Witt didn’t hit any in the team’s first 27 games.

The Athletics lost Tyler Soderstrom to an apparent right shoulder injury after a dive for a fly ball in the fifth — he initially stayed in — and the Royals saw Vinnie Pasquantino exit with lower-back tightness after being hurt during his swing while grounding out in the sixth.

The Athletics’ Aaron Civale didn’t allow a run in five innings while giving up five hits and one walk. He struck out three.

Kansas City’s Kris Bubic permitted one run and four hits in five-plus innings. He struck out six and walked four and departed after hitting Cortes with a pitch to start the sixth.

The A’s took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Gelof reached on an infield hit and scored from second on Wilson’s two-out single to center.

Perez tied the score with one out in the sixth when he jumped on a 2-2 fastball and ripped a 425-foot blast to center off Hogan Harris. The nine-time All Star has homered twice in his last three games.

Perez nearly had a homer in the fourth, but he didn’t have enough elevation on a liner that smacked against the left field wall. He was held to a single by Soderstrom.

MLB News: Cubs break game open late to get by wild Padres

Nico Hoerner’s two-run double snapped a sixth-inning tie and Pete Crow-Armstrong broke open the game with a three-run homer Tuesday night as the visiting Chicago Cubs stopped the San Diego Padres 8-3.

The game was tied 2-2 when Hoerner lined his two-bagger into right center field, scoring Nicky Lopez and Crow-Armstrong. Both runs were charged to reliever Kyle Hart (0-1), who allowed a single and a walk before being lifted for David Morgan.

After San Diego pulled within 4-3 in its half of the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Luis Campusano, Chicago blew it open with four runs in the seventh, all with two outs. Pinch hitter Alex Bregman poked a run-scoring single to right before Crow-Armstrong unloaded his second homer of the year over the center field wall.

Cubs starter Edward Cabrera (3-0) lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven. Padres starter Walker Buehler pitched 4 2/3 innings, yielding three hits and two runs with three walks and four strikeouts.

Buehler got himself into second-inning trouble by issuing consecutive walks to Ian Happ and Michael Busch. Dansby Swanson, who left after the half-inning with a left glute cramp, cashed them in with a two-run double to the wall in left-center.

San Diego pulled a run back in its half of the second when Xander Bogaerts jacked his fifth homer of the year just inside the left field foul pole. The Padres tied the game in the fourth via Ty France’s RBI single that scored Bogaerts, who walked and stole second.

But the Padres simply couldn’t hold off the Cubs’ attack. Chicago finished with eight hits and got help from San Diego pitchers, who combined to walk six, toss three wild pitches and hit two. Bregman and Seiya Suzuki each collected two hits.

Padres manager Craig Stammen left the dugout in the eighth inning to catch a flight in order to attend a funeral. Bench coach Randy Knorr ran the team for the game’s remainder and will act as the manager for the series finale on Wednesday.

MLB News: Cam Schlittler dazzles again as Yankees hold off Rangers

Cam Schlittler pitched six shutout innings to best Jacob deGrom, and Aaron Judge homered for the third straight game as the visiting New York Yankees hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas.

The Yankees won for the 10th time in 11 games and Schlittler (4-1) turned in their 11th scoreless outing by a starting pitcher through their first 30 games. Schlittler allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked two.

It is Schlittler’s fourth start without allowing an earned run. He ended the night with 49 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings. He threw 64 of 92 pitches for strikes and struck out Corey Seager twice a night after Max Fried fanned the shortstop three times in New York’s 4-2 win.

The Yankees mustered a run on three hits in six innings against deGrom (2-1). The two-time Cy Young Award winner struck out five and walked none as Texas lost for the first time in his six starts this season.

Cody Bellinger hit an RBI double in the first inning off the top of the right-center-field fence after Judge had a two-strike single. Bellinger also made a nice catch at the warning track in left field on Brandon Nimmo in the first.

Austin Wells added a homer in the seventh off Jalen Beeks to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Judge hit a 424-foot shot into the second deck in left field in the ninth off Cole Winn and tied Chicago White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami for the major league lead with 12 homers.

Schlittler did not encounter any significant trouble until the sixth. After Nimmo singled and Josh Jung walked on four pitches, Schlittler struck out Seager on three pitches before retiring Joc Pederson and Jake Burger.

Brent Headrick stranded two in the seventh by fanning Nimmo, and Fernando Cruz stranded two in the eighth. Cruz made a backhanded catch on Joc Pederson’s bunt before using his splitter for strikeouts of Burger and pinch hitter Ezequiel Duran.

New York closer David Bednar allowed an RBI triple to Danny Jansen in the ninth when center fielder Trent Grisham slammed into the fence, and Jung delivered an RBI single two batters later. Bednar secured his ninth save, however, by getting Seager to bounce into a game-ending double play.

MLB News: Late offensive eruption leads Mariners over Twins

Josh Naylor went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 7-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night in Minneapolis.

Julio Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with three doubles and two RBIs for Seattle, which evened the three-game series at one win apiece with the rubber match set for Wednesday. Cole Young finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Byron Buxton went 2-for-5 with a solo home run to lead Minnesota. Buxton also swiped his first base of the season.

Mariners right-hander Eduard Bazardo (2-1) got the victory with one scoreless inning of relief. He was one of four relievers to follow starter Logan Gilbert, who allowed one run on six hits in five innings.

Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (2-3) gave up two runs on six hits in six-plus innings. He walked one and struck out six.

The Twins opened the scoring when Buxton led off the fifth with a 389-foot solo shot to left field. It marked his seventh home run of the season, his second in the past two days and his fourth in the past seven games.

The Mariners responded quickly to make it 1-all in the sixth.

Rodriguez started the comeback with a two-out double to left. Four pitches later, Naylor ripped an RBI single to even the score.

Seattle took a 2-1 lead in the seventh and chased Ryan from the game.

Randy Arozarena hit a leadoff double to center, which marked Ryan’s final hitter. Left-hander Kody Funderburk entered the game and retired the next two batters, but Arozarena advanced to third. Young singled to left in the next at-bat to make it 2-1.

Naylor padded the Mariners’ lead to 5-1 with a three-run homer in the eighth. His 390-foot blast to right also scored J.P. Crawford and Rodriguez.

Rodriguez capped the scoring with a two-run double to left in the ninth.

MLB News: Brewers end 7-game homerless stretch, demolish Diamondbacks

Sal Frelick went deep to snap Milwaukee’s seven-game homerless streak and propel the Brewers to a 13-2 rout of the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday in the opener of the three-game series.

Frelick opened the second inning with his second homer, sending a 1-2 pitch from Merrill Kelly 396 feet to right-center. The seven-game streak without a homer was the Brewers’ longest since a franchise-record 13-game stretch in August 1999.

Arizona rallied within 3-2 with two runs in the fifth, but the Brewers answered with two in the bottom half and then erupted for eight runs in the sixth to go in front 13-2.

Brewers starter Chad Patrick (2-1) allowed two runs on one hit in five innings. He walked five and struck out five in a 98-pitch outing. Shane Drohan followed with a scoreless inning and Jake Woodford handled the last three innings for his first save.

It was the second consecutive rocky outing for Kelly, making his third start since coming off the injured list. The 37-year-old right-hander allowed five runs on six hits in five innings with five walks and one strikeout. Kelly was tagged for eight runs in 4 1/3 innings in his previous start.

Held hitless through four innings, the Diamondbacks capitalized on a sudden lack of command by Patrick in the fifth, when he walked the first three hitters of the inning. James McCann singled in two runs to pull Arizona within 3-2.

Tyler Black’s two-run single in the bottom of the frame restored Milwaukee’s three-run edge.

The Brewers bunched eight hits, including two bunt singles, a walk and catcher’s interference for eight runs in the sixth off Andrew Hoffmann, who entered to start the inning but got just one out.

Joey Ortiz’s two-run single put Milwaukee up 3-0 in the fourth.

Arizona’s Ildemaro Vargas opened the eighth with a single to center, extending his hitting streak to 24 games, including 21 this season. That ties Vargas with Steve Garvey for the fourth-longest streak to start a season since 1940. Ron LeFlore had a 30-game season-opening streak in 1976.

MLB News: Drew Romo switch-hits 2 home runs as White Sox bash Angels

Drew Romo homered from both sides of the plate, Colson Montgomery also went deep and Davis Martin pitched effectively into the sixth inning as the host Chicago White Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 on Tuesday.

Chicago has won the first two games of the series against skidding Los Angeles, which has lost five in a row and nine of 10.

Solving resurgent Angels right-hander Jose Soriano was the key on Tuesday.

Soriano entered the game with a 0.24 ERA — the lowest figure in a pitcher’s first six starts with a minimum 30 innings pitched since earned runs became official in both leagues in 1913, per MLB research.

Chicago hit the veteran right-hander more than any other club this season — after Soriano (5-1) struck out the side in the first inning, that is.

Montgomery led off the second with a solo home run to right field to give the White Sox an early 1-0 lead. Jo Adell grounded an RBI single to center against Martin to tie the game in the fourth before Chicago responded with another long ball in the bottom half.

Romo belted an 0-2 fastball over the fence in right field for a two-run blast that marked his first career home run and first hit of any kind in the majors since 2024. Chicago selected Romo’s contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday while designating fellow catcher Reese McGuire for assignment.

Romo added a solo home run against Brent Suter in the sixth while batting right-handed. He hit from the left side against Soriano.

Martin improved to 4-1 by limiting the Angels with runners on base. Sebastian Rivero and Nolan Schanuel both collected two hits against Martin, who yielded seven in his 5 2/3 innings, but Schanuel’s double was the only one that went for extra bases.

Chicago’s Sam Antonacci was hit by a pitch to force in a run in the seventh. The Angels’ Josh Lowe hit a solo homer in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Seranthony Dominguez earned his seventh save in nine chances.

Martin allowed one run. He walked one and struck out seven.

Soriano scattered three runs and six hits in five innings with three walks and six strikeouts.

Chicago’s Everson Pereiera left the game with right shoulder soreness and is day-to-day. Austin Hays replaced him in right field.

MLB News: Cubs’ Justin Steele (elbow) sidelined late in Tommy John recovery

Chicago Cubs left-hander Justin Steele has been shut down in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday.

Steele, who last pitched for Chicago on April 7, 2025, was trending towards a return in late May or early June, but has now stopped throwing as he deals with a left elbow flexor strain.

He’ll be re-evaluated in another month. It’s not entirely clear how much longer that could delay Steele’s return for a Cubs pitching staff that’s already without right-hander Cade Horton due to Tommy John surgery.

This Tommy John surgery was the second of Steele’s career. Now 30, he previously had the same procedure done when he was a prospect in Chicago’s farm system.

Steele has been consistently effective for the Cubs when available. The 2023 All-Star who finished fifth in National League Cy Young Award voting that season has a 32-22 record and a 3.30 career ERA over 102 appearances (91 starts).

MLB News: Martin Perez leads Braves past Tigers in matchup of division leaders

Martin Perez pitched five scoreless innings and Ozzie Albies homered to help the Atlanta Braves defeat the visiting Detroit Tigers 5-2 on Tuesday in the opener of a three-series between division-leading clubs.

The journeyman left-hander allowed two hits and four walks while striking out five. Perez (2-1) logged his first win over the Tigers since Aug. 25, 2019.

Atlanta’s nine-hit attack was led by Mike Yastrzemski, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Yastrzemski had been struggling, going 2-for-20 with six strikeouts in the previous six games.

Albies added a two-run homer, his sixth, in the eighth inning off reliever Tyler Holton to provide some insurance.

Didier Fuentes, recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday when Dylan Lee went on the paternity list, followed Perez with two scoreless innings. Tyler Kinley allowed two hits but struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning. Aaron Bummer allowed a two-run homer to Wenceel Perez in the ninth.

Detroit’s Kevin McGonigle reached on an infield single in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, but Spencer Torkelson went 0-for-3, ending his franchise-record-tying streak of five consecutive games with a home run.

Atlanta scored twice in the third, a frame that began with Yastrzemski and Ronald Acuna Jr. hitting back-to-back doubles. Acuna went to third base on Drake Baldwin’s infield out and scored on Matt Olson’s sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Detroit starter Casey Mize had to leave the game with right groin tightness after the Baldwin grounder. Mize fielded the ball and made an underhand toss to get the out, but grimaced as his momentum carried him into foul territory. Detroit manager A.J. Hinch and the team trainer examined Mize, who was immediately removed from the contest.

Mize (2-2) worked 2 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

The Braves upped their lead to 3-0 with a run in the seventh inning against reliever Burch Smith. Mauricio Dubon doubled with two outs and scored when Yastzemski lined a single that just got over the glove of leaping second baseman Gleyber Torres.

MLB News: Bo Bichette homers as Clay Holmes, Mets shut out Nationals

Clay Holmes threw six scoreless innings Tuesday night for the struggling New York Mets, who rolled to an 8-0 victory over the visiting Washington Nationals in the opener of a three-game series.

Bo Bichette homered leading off the first and Juan Soto’s two-run blast closed out a seven-run fourth-inning outburst for the Mets, who are just 3-15 since April 8 — a span in which they have been outscored 87-47.

Three players had a hit apiece for the Nationals, who have lost seven of 11.

Holmes (3-2) gave up three hits and one walk while striking out six. The Nationals got their only runner into scoring position in the second, when Holmes escaped a two-on jam by striking out Luis Garcia Jr.

New York reliever Tobias Myers tossed two hitless innings before Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in a perfect ninth.

Bichette was the only Mets player to reach base in the first three innings against Zack Littell (0-4), who retired eight in a row following Bichette’s homer before he walked the third baseman in the third.

MJ Melendez singled with one out in the fourth and Mark Vientos and Brett Baty walked. Melendez and Vientos then scored when third baseman Jorbit Vivas misplayed Marcus Semien’s grounder.

Carson Benge laced a two-RBI single on the next pitch and Ronny Mauricio singled before Benge trotted home on Bichette’s long fly to right. Soto chased Littell with his second homer of the season and his first since April 1.

Benge had two hits — his third multi-hit effort in his last four starts. The rookie outfielder had multiple hits just once in his first 21 games (19 starts).

Littell allowed the eight runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out one over 3 2/3 innings. He has given up 24 runs (18 earned) over just 13 2/3 innings in his past three starts.

MLB News: Trey Yesavage shines in season debut as Jays blank Red Sox

Trey Yesavage pitched 5 1/3 sharp innings in his season debut Tuesday night and the Toronto Blue Jays shut out the visiting Boston Red Sox 3-0.

Yesavage (1-0) allowed four hits and no walks while striking three. He started the season on the injured list due to a right shoulder impingement.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two hits and an RBI while Kazuma Okamoto had a two-run single to help the Blue Jays end Boston’s three-game winning streak.

Louis Varland struck out the side in the ninth to earn his fourth save.

Boston won the opener of the three-game series 5-0 on Monday, when Toronto was limited to two hits. The decisive match will be played Wednesday afternoon.

The Red Sox had runners at third base without scoring in each of the first two innings against Yesavage. Willson Contreras was stranded at third after his one-out double in the first. Boston left runners at first and third in the second after Trevor Story bunted for a single and Marcelo Mayer singled to right with two outs. Mayer extended his career-best hitting streak to seven games.

Toronto took a 2-0 lead against Payton Tolle (0-1) in the third. Andres Gimenez led off with a single and took third on Guerrero’s two-out double to left. Both runners scored on Okamoto’s single off the wall in left, but Okamoto was retired while trying for a double.

The Blue Jays added to the lead in the fifth. After Myles Straw and Ernie Clement accepted two-out walks, Zack Kelly replaced Tolle and saw Guerrero hit his first pitch for an RBI single to center.

Tolle allowed three runs, three hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Yesavage struck out Contreras to open the sixth before being replaced by Mason Fluharty.

Toronto’s Jeff Hoffman pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts, and Tyler Rogers added a perfect top of the eighth. Boston did not have a hit after the fourth inning.

Boston’s Wilyer Abreu went 0-for-3 with a walk to end a six-game hitting streak.
