CHAMP News: Jerry Kelly, Matt Gogel tied for lead at Boeing Classic

Jerry Kelly rang up six birdies in a row late in his opening round on Friday, and he shares the early lead with Matt Gogel at the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Wash.

Kelly’s 7-under-par 65 saw him roll in birdies at Nos. 12-17, including par-3s at Nos. 13 and 17 at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge.

That run actually boosted him to 8 under, but he finished on a sour note at the par-5 18th when he went from bunker to bunker, reached the green in four and two-putted for his only bogey of the day.

“I didn’t even realize I was on a pretty good birdie streak until I saw it on 17, that was fun,” Kelly said. “I knew I was 8 under but didn’t know I just made six in a row.”

Kelly, 58, will try to win the Boeing Classic for the second time. It was the site of his first PGA Tour Champions victory in 2017; now he is searching for his 14th title overall.

“It’s special because of this whole area, I love it,” Kelly said. “When I can look around and forget about golf, that’s a great thing for me. It’s so beautiful up here that it can even make me forget about golf.”

He and Gogel take a one-stroke lead over Paul Goydos into the weekend.

Gogel was one of the last players to finish and capped off a busy day with birdies at Nos. 8-9 to tie Kelly for the lead. Gogel recorded nine birdies and two bogeys. He was 1 over through six holes before birdieing eight of his final 12 holes.

Goydos, meanwhile, turned in a bogey-free card, with five of his six birdies coming on the front nine.

“For nine holes I really couldn’t have done much better. Everything was exactly what I was trying to do for the most part,” Goydos said. “Back nine I played solid. I didn’t hit the putter quite as well. I hit it to two inches on 12 for my only birdie on the back.”

Six players are tied for fourth at 5-under 67: Brandt Jobe, David Duval, Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson, New Zealand’s Steven Alker, Fiji’s Vijay Singh and Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke.

Two-time defending champion Stephen Ames of Canada opened with a 2-under 70.

President Donald Trump Brokers Historic Peace Deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Nominated Again for Nobel Peace Prize: CWEB Political News

The White House August 8, 2025

In yet another extraordinary display of diplomatic mastery, President Donald J. Trump has achieved what generations of world leaders could not, brokering a lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, ending decades of bitter conflict in the South Caucasus. This monumental accomplishment has once again thrust President Trump into the global spotlight, with multiple nations nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize—an honor that has eluded him despite multiple past nominations, each more deserved than the last.

A Triumph of Unmatched Statesmanship

Today, under President Trump’s unparalleled leadership, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a historic peace declaration in the hallowed halls of the White House. This agreement not only halts generations of bloodshed but also establishes a framework for economic cooperation, energy security, and regional stability—a testament to President Trump’s unique ability to turn adversaries into partners.

“For too long, the people of Armenia and Azerbaijan have suffered under the weight of a conflict that seemed endless,” President Trump declared, his words resonating with the authority of a leader who has repeatedly defied the odds. “Today, we declare a new beginning—one built not on the ruins of war, but on the foundation of peace, prosperity, and mutual respect.”

A Global Peacemaker Like No Other

This latest diplomatic triumph adds to President Trump’s already staggering legacy as the most effective peacemaker in modern history. From the historic Abraham Accords, which reshaped the Middle East, to groundbreaking agreements between Israel and Iran, Serbia and Kosovo, and India and Pakistan, his tenure has been defined by an unrelenting pursuit of stability and prosperity.

President Aliyev, visibly moved, praised President Trump’s unwavering commitment: “No leader in history has achieved so much for peace in such a short time. The people of Azerbaijan will forever remember President Trump as the man who brought us out of darkness and into a new era of hope.”

@cwebnews♬ original sound – CWEB

Prime Minister Pashinyan echoed these sentiments, stating, “This is not just a peace deal—it is a rebirth for our nations. Without President Trump’s vision and determination, this day would never have come.”

Nobel Peace Prize Nomination: A Long-Overdue Honor

In recognition of this historic achievement, multiple nations have once again submitted President Trump’s name for the Nobel Peace Prize—an accolade that has, inexplicably, been denied to him despite his unparalleled contributions to global harmony.

Past nominations, each backed by leaders and legislators from across the world, have highlighted his transformative impact on international relations. Yet, in a glaring oversight, the Nobel Committee has thus far failed to award him the prize he so richly deserves.

This latest nomination, however, may finally correct that injustice. With a legacy that includes ending multiple wars, forging unprecedented alliances, and fostering economic prosperity in conflict-ridden regions, President Trump stands as the most deserving candidate in decades.

CWEB Political News: A Legacy That Cannot Be Ignored

As CWEB Political News reports, President Trump’s latest diplomatic victory is not merely another headline—it is a defining moment in world history. His ability to bring nations together, to resolve conflicts that others deemed unsolvable, and to create a safer, more prosperous world is unmatched.

The Nobel Committee now faces a critical choice: Will they finally recognize the man who has done more for peace than any other leader of our time? Or will they allow politics to overshadow merit once again?

One thing is certain: History will remember Donald J. Trump as the President of Peace—whether the Nobel Committee does or not.

MLB News: Giants head home full of hope to face skidding Nationals

The San Francisco Giants hope to ride the momentum of a successful road trip in the wake of a trade-deadline sell-off when they oppose the Washington Nationals on Friday night in the opener of a nine-game homestand.

The Giants returned from a pair of 2-1 series wins over the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates in fifth place in the National League wild-card standings, having played better ball of late on the road than at home.

The last time the Giants took the field at in San Francisco, they were completing an 0-6 homestand against those same Mets and Pirates. They enter the weekend series having lost eight in a row at home, while they have won six of their past eight on the road.

Though the Giants lost new starting right fielder Jerar Encarnacion to a strained right hamstring on Wednesday in a series-ending, 4-2 win at Pittsburgh, the trip finished with encouraging performances by center fielder Jung Hoo Lee and first baseman Dominic Smith.

Lee had an extra-base hit in all six games of the trek while going 10-for-24 (.417). Smith extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a tiebreaking pinch single in the ninth inning of the Wednesday win.

The Giants flew home with a lot of confidence, according to Smith.

“This clubhouse has a belief that we can win and go on a run,” he said. “Understanding that it’s one game at a time, and if we can win that, then we’ll stack enough series wins, and then who knows where we’ll be at the end of the year.”

The Giants will open the series with right-hander Kai-Wei Teng (0-1, 13.50) making his first home start. The 26-year-old, whose four appearances last season were all in relief, struggled in his first big-league start on Saturday against the Mets, serving up five runs in 3 1/3 innings during a 12-6 defeat.

Among Teng’s outings as a rookie last season was one against the Nationals, when he allowed two runs in 3 1/3 innings in an 8-1 loss.

Washington lost two of three to the Giants in a low-scoring home series in May. The Nationals’ lone win came in the start of Jake Irvin (8-6, 4.89 ERA), who will get the ball on Friday. The 28-year-old right-hander has done his best pitching of late on the road, having allowed a total of two earned runs over 12 innings at Milwaukee and Minnesota in his past two away starts.

Irvin threw arguably his best game of the season in a 3-0 victory over the Giants on May 24, when he yielded three hits and two walks while striking out seven in eight innings. The result improved his career record against San Francisco to 3-1 with a 2.77 ERA in four starts.

The Nationals flew west after a 6-0 loss to the Athletics on Thursday that ended a 1-5 homestand. They have lost seven of their past eight overall.

While Washington has little reason to get excited about the final 48 games of the season, Irvin hopes the performance of former University of Oklahoma pal Cade Cavalli inspires his own uplifting effort in San Francisco.

Making his first major league appearance since August 2022, Cavalli worked the first 4 1/3 innings of a 2-1 win over the A’s on Wednesday, holding the visitors scoreless while fanning six.

“It’s freaking awesome,” Irvin said after the game. “Getting to play with a college teammate and a great friend of mine is something that means a lot.”

MLB News: Junior Caminero, Rays ready to rake against Mariners

On the lengthy list of players from the Dominican Republic who have starred in the major leagues, only three have hit 30 homers in their age 21 or younger season.

Albert Pujols hammered 37 long balls in 2001, and Juan Soto socked 34 in 2019.

“Two legends,” the Tampa Bay Rays’ Junior Caminero said Wednesday after hitting two homers in a 5-4 victory against the host Los Angeles Angels to become the third member of that exclusive club.

“I’m just trying to play my game, and it brings me a lot of pride to hear that. It makes me really happy.”

After a day off Thursday, Caminero and the Rays will open a three-game series Friday against the host Seattle Mariners.

Caminero, an All-Star third baseman, hit a two-run blast in the first inning on Wednesday and a solo shot in the third. The former was measured at 447 feet, the longest of his career.

“I’m impressed with everything Junior does,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “To be at his age, the quality of the at-bat that you get, the power that he shows, the defensive play … he’s doing a lot of things to help us win.

“Continue to be impressed with the work that he puts in and the really good results that he gets.”

Teammate and fellow Dominican Christopher Morel, who hit the decisive home run in the seventh inning, seemed more excited by Caminero’s night.

“More than just the two home runs, but also for him to get to 30 at that age and that quickly,” Morel said. “I wanted to see him accomplish that. I’m very proud of him.”

Caminero, who set a goal of 30 homers before the season began, has had to adjust his sights.

“Finish the season in good health,” he said, “and get to the World Series.”

The latter might be a long shot as, despite back-to-back victories, the Rays enter play Friday 4 1/2 games back in the American League wild-card chase, with three teams between Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees, who currently hold the final playoff berth.

The Mariners, who are in the AL’s second wild-card spot, are 6-1 on their 10-game homestand. Dominic Canzone’s one-out single in the 11th inning on Thursday lifted Seattle to a 4-3 victory against the Chicago White Sox.

Former Ray Randy Arozarena hit a two-run homer, his 23rd of the season, matching his career high.

“We talk about effort and pushing through until the end, and our guys did it again today,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. “Incredible effort.”

The victory might have come at a cost as first baseman Josh Naylor had to leave after three innings because of shoulder discomfort. Naylor, who had three homers and 10 steals over his first 13 games with the Mariners after being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks, will be re-evaluated on Friday.

“Just a little bit of shoulder soreness,” Wilson said. “We’re going to get some answers here and monitor it and see where he’s at. I think it’s a day-to-day kind of thing.”

Rays All-Star Drew Rasmussen (9-5, 2.81 ERA) is set to take the mound in the series opener against a fellow right-hander, the Mariners’ Luis Castillo (8-6, 3.22).

Rasmussen won his past two starts, against the Yankees and the Dodgers. He allowed four hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings with no walks and six strikeouts on Saturday in a 4-0 victory against visiting Los Angeles.

Rasmussen, who was born in nearby Puyallup, Wash., is 2-0 with an 0.61 ERA in four career appearances against the Mariners, including three starts.

Castillo is 4-1 over his past six starts. His only no-decision in that span came Saturday against the visiting Texas Rangers, when he gave up two runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Castillo is 2-1 with a 3.30 ERA in five previous starts against Tampa Bay.

NFL News: Rob Gronkowski to replace retired Jimmy Johnson on Fox pregame show

Fox Sports confirmed Friday that retired All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski will become a full-time member of the “Fox NFL Sunday” crew, replacing Super Bowl-winning coach Jimmy Johnson.

Johnson, 82, announced his retirement in March. Gronkowski previously made guest appearances on the pregame show.

The 36-year-old Gronkowski won four Super Bowl rings, three with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On the Fox show, he will join host Curt Menefee and Pro Football Hall of Fame members Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long and Michael Strahan. NFL insider Jay Glazer also returns.

The show is entering its 32nd season. Bradshaw and Long are original members of the group.

Fox also announced Friday that its No. 1 broadcast team — play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt, analyst Tom Brady and sideline reporters Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi — will have the Week 1 call on Sept. 7 of the game between the Washington Commanders and New York Giants.

The following week, they will be in Kansas City for the Super Bowl LIX rematch between the Chiefs and champion Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL News: Report: X-rays clean for Colts QB Anthony Richardson

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson reportedly will return to practice “in the coming days” after X-rays on his dislocated pinkie came back clean.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz provided the positive update Friday for the injury-plagued passer, who sustained the injury to his right (throwing) hand in the first quarter of Thursday’s preseason opener at Baltimore.

Richardson, who got the start over offseason acquisition Daniel Jones, was under center for his second drive when he was sacked by David Ojabo for an 8-yard loss. Replays showed his little finger bent at an awkward angle.

After the game, he said he needed to have better awareness in such a situation.

“I definitely looked at it. That’s a tricky one because it’s five-man pro and hot from the backside,” Richardson said of the play on which he was injured. “I’ve just got to get my eyes to be able to react to that. It was just five-man pro playing hot. I need to be on my Ps and Qs when it comes to that.”

“It was going to be hard for me to see anyway,” Richardson added. “My eyes are looking a certain way, but I just have to be keyed on when anybody brings pressure like that. I thought it would be the nickel, but they brought it from the other side. I just have to be ready to get the ball out.”

Richardson completed 2 of 3 passes for 21 yards before exiting the Colts’ 24-16 loss to the Ravens. Jones was 10-for-21 passing for 144 yards and rookie Riley Leonard completed 12 of 24 passes for 92 yards and an interception.

Richardson, 23, is battling to keep his starting job after making 11 starts in 2024 and briefly being benched for Joe Flacco.

As a rookie in 2023, the No. 4 overall pick sustained an AC joint sprain in his fourth career start and underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. Last season, Richardson missed two games with an oblique injury and two more due to back spasms, and he was absent from mandatory minicamp this summer because of a shoulder injury.

NFL News: Colts rookie CB Justin Walley (ACL) out for season

Indianapolis Colts rookie cornerback Justin Walley will miss the upcoming season after sustaining a torn ACL in a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens, head coach Shane Steichen announced.

Walley was listed as a starter on the first depth chart of the preseason by the Colts, who selected him in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Minnesota.

“Huge blow,” Steichen said on Thursday, two days after Walley suffered the injury. “I think he was having a hell of a camp. His man coverage skills were great, he was making a ton of plays in practice too before it happened.”

Walley, 22, recorded 42 tackles and two interceptions — including one returned for a touchdown — in 10 games last season with the Golden Gophers.

Fellow cornerbacks JuJu Brents and Jaylon Jones have missed practices while nursing hamstring injuries.

NFL News: ESPN finalizes acquisition of NFL Network, RedZone for 10% equity

ESPN and the National Football League on Tuesday formally announced an agreement in which ESPN will acquire NFL Network, the linear NFL RedZone Channel and NFL Fantasy in exchange for a 10 percent equity stake in ESPN.

The deal, pending final approval by NFL owners and other conditions, will bring major NFL media properties under the Disney-owned network and expand ESPN’s football offerings across both traditional and streaming platforms.

“Since its launch in 2003, NFL Network has provided millions of fans unprecedented access to the sport they love,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “Whether it was debuting Thursday Night Football, televising the Combine, or telling incredible football stories through original shows and breaking news, NFL Network has delivered. The Network’s sale to ESPN will build on this remarkable legacy, providing more NFL football for more fans in new and innovative ways.”

Under the agreement, NFL Network and RedZone will be integrated into ESPN’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service while remaining available via cable and satellite. NFL Fantasy would merge with ESPN Fantasy, creating the official season-long fantasy platform of the league.

As part of a second agreement between the sides, ESPN will also gain rights to license three additional NFL games per season, while four games will shift from ESPN to NFL Network.

“This is an exciting day for sports fans,” ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. “By combining these NFL media assets with ESPN’s reach and innovation, we’re creating a premier destination for football fans. Together, ESPN and the NFL are redefining how fans engage with the game–anytime, anywhere. This deal helps fuel ESPN’s digital future, laying the foundation for an even more robust offering as we prepare to launch our new direct-to-consumer service.”

The NFL will retain ownership of key properties including NFL Films, NFL+, NFL.com and the NFL Podcast Network, and will continue producing and distributing the digital version of RedZone independently.

Liberty inducting Tari Phillips into Ring of Honor

The New York Liberty will induct four-time All-Star Tari Phillips into the franchise’s Ring of Honor on Sunday afternoon.

The 6-foot-2 forward played for New York from 2000-03, reaching the WNBA Finals in 2000 and 2002.

Phillips, 55, will become the eighth inductee in the Ring of Honor — and first since 2021 — at halftime of the game against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

Phillips averaged 13.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 141 games (138 starts) with the Liberty. She still ranks second in team history in rebounds (1,077), fifth in steals (235) and ninth in points (1,826).

She was named the league’s Most Improved Player in 2000 and made the All-WNBA second team in 2002.

A first-round pick (eighth overall) by the Orlando Miracle in 1999, Phillips averaged 9.2 points and 5.5 rebounds in 232 career games (141 starts) with Orlando, New York and Houston.

Celtics extend contract of head coach Joe Mazzulla

Head coach Joe Mazzulla has signed a multi-year contract extension with the Boston Celtics.

The team announced his signing on Friday but did not reveal either the length of the deal or its monetary value.

Mazzulla, 37, has compiled a 182-64 regular-season record and a 33-17 playoff mark in three seasons with Boston. The Celtics won the NBA title in 2024.

He was the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since the 1968-69 season, when Bill Russell, then 35, led the Celtics to the NBA championship as a player-coach.

“We are very excited that Joe has agreed to extend with the Celtics,” said Brad Stevens, the team’s president of basketball operations. “He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans. He’s worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach — including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics.”

A Rhode Island native, Mazzulla was a Celtics assistant coach for three seasons before taking the helm.

“This is truly a blessing,” he said. “I would not be here without my faith, my wife and my children. We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad’s mentorship and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston.”

The Celtics will be a new-look team in the 2025-26 season.

Star Jayson Tatum is recovering from an Achilles injury suffered in the playoffs and could miss the entire campaign. The Celtics also traded away veterans Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis and aren’t expected to bring back Al Horford.
