MLB News: After clinching playoff spot, Brewers rally past Cards in 10

Caleb Durbin ripped a game-tying RBI double in the 10th inning then scored the winner on Andruw Monasterio’s single as the host Milwaukee Brewers topped the St. Louis Cardinals 9-8 on Saturday.

The Brewers celebrated their 11th walk-off victory of the season hours after they officially clinched their seventh postseason berth in eight years with the New York Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.

After Jordan Walker scored on a double-play groundout in the top of the 10th inning, Durbin forged an 8-8 tie with a double into the left-center field gap. Monasterio then capped a 10-pitch at-bat against Kyle Leahy (4-2) with a single to center.

Abner Uribe (3-2) got the win after allowing the 10th-inning run on no hits and one walk.

Milwaukee’s William Contreras had an RBI infield single to cap a three-run outburst in the ninth inning. He had three RBIs and Sal Frelick drove in two runs for the Brewers (91-58), who trailed by five runs entering the bottom of the sixth.

St. Louis’ Ivan Herrera homered to highlight a three-hit performance and Brendan Donovan also went deep. Thomas Saggese had an RBI single among his three hits for the Cardinals (72-77), who have lost five in a row.

Trailing 7-4 in the ninth inning, the Brewers put the first two runners aboard against Riley O’Brien before Frelick doubled home Durbin. Jackson Chourio’s infield single plated Monasterio, and Contreras’ infield single leveled the score at 7.

Herrera deposited a first-pitch fastball from rookie right-hander Jacob Misiorowski over the wall in left-center field to open the scoring in the first inning.

Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch two batters later and scored on Lars Nootbaar’s double to center field.

Donovan sent a 0-2 curveball from Misiorowski over the wall in right-center field to lead off the third inning.

Frelick’s sacrifice fly in the third inning trimmed Milwaukee’s deficit to 3-1, but St. Louis regained its three-run cushion in the fifth when Herrera ripped a one-out double and came around to score on Willson Contreras’ single to right field.

Victor Scott II had a sacrifice fly and Pedro Pages scored on a wild pitch by Rob Zastryzny in the sixth inning to push the Cardinals’ advantage to 6-1.

NCAAF News: Ahmad Hardy leads No. 25 Missouri past Louisiana

Ahmad Hardy rushed for 250 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries Saturday as No. 25 Missouri hammered visiting Louisiana 52-10 in Columbia.

Hardy scored on runs of 7, 71 and 7 yards for the Tigers (3-0), while quarterback Beau Pribula threw for 174 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, two through the air. Backup running back Marquise Davis added 113 yards and a score on 20 carries as Missouri outgained the Ragin’ Cajuns 606-121.

Pribula completed 15 of 22 passes with an interception before leaving in the third quarter. Kevin Coleman was his favorite target, hauling in eight passes for 84 yards. The Tigers finished with 32 first downs, converting 9 of 13 third downs.

Most of Louisiana’s offense came on one play, an 84-yard touchdown run in the second quarter by Zylan Perry with 3:27 left. The Ragin’ Cajuns (1-2) used two quarterbacks and neither was effective. Starter Daniel Beale hit 1 of 8 passes for 5 yards and backup Lunch Winfield was 1 of 6 for minus 1 yard.

Hardy’s first 7-yard touchdown run initiated the scoring with 8:26 left in the first quarter, capping a 10-play drive that lasted more than five minutes. Pribula hit Marquis Johnson for an 11-yard scoring strike on the next possession.

Pribula hit paydirt on a 14-yard run 42 seconds into the second quarter, followed by his 39-yard touchdown pass to running back Jamal Roberts. After Tony Sterner got Louisiana on the board with a 34-yard field goal, Hardy made it 35-3 with 5:41 left in the half on his 71-yard scoring jaunt.

Following Perry’s touchdown run, Missouri mounted a late drive and Robert Meyer converted a 21-yard field goal with five seconds remaining for a 38-10 halftime lead.

Hardy tacked on his third score on a 7-yard run at with 10:02 left in the third quarter and Davis barged in on a 2-yard run with 7:02 left in the game.

MLB News: Dodgers place All-Star catcher Will Smith (hand) on 10-day injured list

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed All-Star catcher Will Smith on the injured list Saturday because of a right hand contusion.

The move to the 10-day IL is retroactive to Sept. 10. In a corresponding move, the Dodgers recalled catcher Chuckie Robinson from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Smith, 30, was struck by a foul tip on Sept. 3 in a game at Pittsburgh and bruised a bone in his right hand. He missed five games but got clean results from X-rays, a CT scan and an MRI, so Smith remained on the active roster.

He played on Tuesday in a home win over Colorado, then was scratched from Wednesday’s game against the Rockies because his hand swelled up. Smith also sat out Friday’s series opener against the host San Francisco Giants.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said earlier that Smith likely will have to deal with the bone bruise for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.

Smith is batting .296 with 17 home runs, 61 RBIs, a .404 on-base percentage and .497 slugging percentage in 110 games this season.

Voted to the All-Star Game for three straight seasons, Smith is a career .264 hitter with 128 homers and 442 RBIs in 722 regular-season games, all with the Dodgers since 2019.

Smith, a member of the Dodgers’ World Series championship teams in 2020 and 2024, was a first-round pick (32nd overall) by Los Angeles in the 2016 MLB Draft out of Louisville.

Robinson, 30, has not appeared in a major league game this season. He rejoined Los Angeles after being optioned on Monday. He has hit .254 with four home runs and 28 RBIs in 48 games for Oklahoma City.

He batted .132 (17-for-129) with two homers and five RBIs in 51 games over parts of two seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (2022) and Chicago White Sox (2024).

NCAAF News: No. 24 Auburn takes care of South Alabama to set up anticipated Oklahoma matchup

Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold produced three touchdowns, Jeremiah Cobb rushed for over 100 yards and scored, and the No. 24 Tigers earned a 31-15 homecoming win over the South Alabama Jaguars on Saturday afternoon in Auburn, Ala.

Arnold rushed for 50 yards on 10 attempts and scored twice in the first half. He completed 13 of 24 passes for 142 yards and a score. Cobb carried 19 times for 119 yards to eclipse the century mark for the second straight week.

The Tigers (3-0), who entered tied atop the SEC in rushing touchdowns with seven, added to their total with three more and will look ahead to their conference opener next week at No. 13 Oklahoma, where Arnold transferred from.

Cam Coleman caught a TD pass, and Keyron Crawford recorded an interception that set up a touchdown.

For the Jaguars (1-2), Bishop Davenport completed 18 of 26 passes for 170 yards and two TDs, one to Jeremy Scott and the other to Devin Voisin.

Nearly a four-touchdown favorite over the Sun Belt Conference visitors, Auburn converted on fourth down at midfield early on. One play later, Arnold found Coleman on a deep ball for a 32-yard score at 9:09.

The Jaguars answered with a 12-play, 64-yard drive that ended with Hamilton DiBoyan’s 29-yard kick.

Crawford’s interception, the defensive end’s first career and first for Auburn this season, set up Arnold’s 6-yard dash around the right side for a 14-3 edge less than a minute into the second quarter.

With his linemen giving him a shove, the quarterback made it 21-3 by rushing for a second score at 9:48, capping a 54-yard drive.

On his squad’s best drive of the half, Davenport hit Scott for a quick 20-yard strike to cap a 75-yard drive, but Cobb’s short run in the half’s final minute built the lead to 28-9.

Ending another 75-yard scoring drive to open the second half, Davenport connected with Voisin for 12 yards to trim it to 28-15. Auburn kicker Alex McPherson booted a 34-yard field goal after the home side’s next drive stalled to give them a full two-score lead that it held to the end.

MLB News: Struggling Astros pick up rare consecutive wins

Hunter Brown threw 6 2/3 quality innings, Jeremy Pena and Christian Walker each drove in two runs, and the Houston Astros posted a 6-2 victory over the host Atlanta Braves on Saturday.

Brown (12-7) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one for Houston (81-68), which won consecutive games for the first time since a three-game winning streak from Aug. 27-29. Yainer Diaz went 3-for-4 for the Astros, who needed to win to stay tied with Seattle, which also won on Saturday, atop the American League West. Houston and Seattle also hold a two-game lead over the third-place Texas Rangers, who won their sixth straight earlier Saturday.

Braves starter Bryce Elder (7-10) allowed six runs on 10 hits across 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking three. Matt Olson had two hits, including a solo homer, for Atlanta (65-83), which lost its fourth straight and is 4-11 over its last 15.

Houston struck first in the second inning as Walker’s single and Jake Meyers’ walk were followed with Diaz’s run-scoring single to center. Two batters later, Pena’s two-run double extended the Astros’ advantage to 3-0.

After Carlos Correa’s double and Jose Altuve’s single began the third, Jesus Sanchez drove in the fourth Houston run on a fielder’s choice to second. Walker then connected on his 23rd homer of the season to push the margin to six runs.

Olson’s 24th homer of the season cut the Braves’ deficit to 6-1 in the fourth.

Meyers and Diaz slashed one-out singles in the fifth, chasing Elder from the game. But Dylan Dodd posted 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for Atlanta.

Olson singled and Ozzie Albies earned a two-out walk in the seventh, chasing Brown from the game after 108 pitches. Former Atlanta pitcher Enyel De Los Santos entered in relief, allowing He-Seong Kim’s RBI single to cut the Astros’ lead to 6-2.

Bryan King threw 1 1/3 perfect innings to close out the game for Houston.

Baylor rode a 35-point first half to an easy 42-7 victory over visiting Samford on Saturday at Waco, Texas.

Bryson Washington led Baylor (2-1) with 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns, despite leaving the game for a short time in the first quarter with an injury. Washington broke away for early runs of 31 and 23 yards.

Bears quarterback Sawyer Robertson was 23 of 37 for 211 yards and three touchdowns, with two interceptions.

Samford quarterback Quincy Crittendon was 7 of 13 for 59 yards, while the Bulldogs had 100 yards passing in the game. Samford running back CJ Evans had 13 carries for 53 yards.

Baylor head coach Dave Aranda kept Washington, Robertson and the Bears’ offense on the field well into the second half and the Bears dominated in total yards 468-195.

In the third quarter, the Baylor offense stalled with 81 yards on offense and one interception by Robertson. But Samford (0-3) was held to just 55 yards of offense in the quarter as the Baylor defense made its presence known.

Robertson responded in the fourth quarter on the quarterback’s final offensive drive with a 14-play, 88-yard scoring push, which culminated in an 11-yard touchdown reception by Louis Brown IV with 11:40 remaining.

When Washington was out with an early injury, freshman running back Caden Knighten moved into the backfield and scored on a 1-yard run with 1:09 remaining in the first half to give Baylor a 35-7 lead.

Samford’s lone touchdown came on a trick play from the 12-yard line with 1:07 remaining in the first quarter. On what looked like a screen play, Crittendon passed to Evans who caught the ball, stopped and threw a wobbling pass to Torrey Ward. After the catch, Ward pushed into the end zone from the 1-yard line.

Crittendon played only one half for Samford, while Brady Stober was 4 of 10 with 30 yards in the air for the Bulldogs.

MLB News: Parker Messick, surging Guardians down White Sox

Parker Messick won his third straight decision to begin his career and CJ Kayfus and Jhonkensy Noel each homered as the Cleveland Guardians beat the visiting Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Saturday night.

The victory allowed Cleveland (77-71) to pull within 3 1/2 games of the third and final American League wild-card spot, currently shared by the West Division co-leading Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners.

Messick (3-0) struck out four over six innings, giving up one run on seven hits with a walk. The left-hander was called up from Triple-A Columbus to make his debut Aug. 20 at the Arizona Diamondbacks and is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two home starts.

NCAAF News: Harrison Waylee helps Virginia pound William & Mary

Harrison Waylee rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns as host Virginia seized control early, pulled away in the second quarter and set a school record with 700 total yards in a 55-16 rout of William & Mary on Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers (2-1) scored on six of their first seven drives and rolled to their seventh straight victory in the series, spoiling the return of Mike London, who coached them to a 27-46 mark from 2010-15. Virginia eclipsed its previous record of 691 total yards set in 1968 against Davidson and held a 42-7 lead by halftime

Waylee scored three touchdowns for the second time in his career and first time since a double overtime win at Ball State when he was at Northern Illinois on Oct. 1, 2022. He scored on runs of 2 and 8 yards in the second quarter before ripping off a 97-yard TD run about 3 1/2 minutes into the third on the first play of Virginia’s opening drive of the second half.

Chandler Morris completed 13 of 19 passes for 149 yards before sitting the rest of the way after Virginia’s fifth scoring drive.

Noah Vaughn added 101 yards, including a career-best 54-yard run on a third down that set up Virginia’s fourth TD.

Kameron Courtney, J’Mari Taylor and Xavier Brown also had rushing TDs as the Cavaliers gained 379 yards on the ground.

William & Mary (1-2) was held to 263 yards and Carter Boyd punted nine times after the FCS program earned a one-point win over Maine last week. Tyler Hughes started and completed 5 of 8 passes for 93 yards in the first half before backup Noah Brannock finished up and scored on a short TD run in the third quarter.

Deven Thompson finished with five receptions for 108 yards, including a 79-yard catch for William & Mary’s lone TD of the opening half

After Courtney scored on a reverse and Taylor scored on a direct snap in a span of about 5 1/2 minutes in the opening quarter, Brown scored for a 21-0 lead early in the second.

Virginia gave up the Tribe’s lone TD on a blown coverage in the secondary with 13:01 left but Waylee scored his first TD with 9:27 remaining and Rogers hauled in a short pass from Morris with 6:01 left.

The Cavaliers held a 42-7 lead by halftime after Harrison scored from eight yards out with 1:59 remaining to cap a drive set up by Suderian Harrison’s 56-yard reception.

MLB News: Red-hot Phillies beat Royals, move to brink of clinching NL East

Brandon Marsh drove in three runs and Kyle Schwarber belted his 51st homer to highlight the Philadelphia Phillies’ 8-6 win over the visiting Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

With its ninth win in 10 games, Philadelphia (89-60) lowered its magic number to one to clinch the National League East. The Phillies are two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers (91-58) for the top overall seed in the NL postseason.

Salvador Perez hit two home runs for Kansas City, giving him 300 for his career, and drove in three runs, pushing his career total to 1,000. The Royals (74-75) have lost six of their last seven games and will try to avoid a three-game sweep on Sunday.

Kansas City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Royals strung together five straight two-out hits against Taijuan Walker (5-8), including Perez’s two-run homer.

Philadelphia answered in the bottom half on Marsh’s two-run double, but Perez homered again in the third to make it 4-2.

After scoring a run in their half of the third inning, the Phillies took the lead with three runs in the fifth against reliever Angel Zerpa (5-2).

Schwarber’s line-drive homer to right field tied the game. Shortly thereafter, Nick Castellanos’ sacrifice fly gave Philadelphia its first lead, and Otto Kemp followed with an RBI double to make it 6-4.

Schwarber’s RBI single in the sixth gave the hosts an additional run, and Marsh’s homer in the seventh pushed the lead to 8-5.

Carter Jensen’s RBI single in the eighth brought the visitors within 8-6. Rookie Jack Caglianone then came up as the potential tying run, but he struck out on three pitches against veteran reliever David Robertson.

Jhoan Duran breezed through the ninth for his 30th save, capped by a 102 mph fastball to strike out Vinnie Pasquantino.

Walker allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings. Royals starter Ryan Bergert gave up three runs and four hits in four frames.

NCAAF News: Maryland topples Towson as nonconference win streak hits 18

Maryland true freshman Malik Washington carved up Towson’s defense by throwing for 261 yards and a touchdown in a 44-17 victory Saturday in College Park, Md.

Before retiring to the bench in the third quarter, Washington completed 16 of 22 passes and ran for the first touchdown of his college career as Maryland (3-0) extended its FBS-best nonconference winning streak to 18 games.

Washington was intercepted for the first time in his career on a tipped pass in the third quarter. But three plays later, the Terrapins’ La’Khi Roland answered with an interception in the end zone and raced 100 yards to give Maryland a 41-0 lead early in the second half.

The last Maryland defensive player to score on a 100-yard interception return was Tom Brown in 1962.

Also rushing for Maryland touchdowns were DeJuan Williams, who carried 12 times for 47 yards, and Nolan Ray, who added nine rushes for 23 yards.

Andrew Indorf, also a true freshman, completed 12 of 25 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown for Towson (2-1), which gained 220 of its 281 yards in the second half.

Maryland gained 324 of its 428 yards in the first half.

The Terrapins improved to 4-0 against their in-state foe in the series, outscoring the Tigers 173-43 in those games. They also improved to 23-0 against FCS-level teams since 1978.

Maryland cashed in on all six of its possessions in the first half. Field goals by Sean O’Haire of 37 and 39 yards bookended four touchdowns as the Terrapins held a 34-0 lead at the half.

Washington set up Maryland’s first touchdown with a 53-yard strike to Octavian Smith Jr. On the next play, Williams scored on a 2-yard run for a 10-0 lead. Smith finished with four receptions for 103 yards.

The next time the Terrapins got the ball, Washington highlighted a 78-yard drive with a 33-yard pass to Shaleak Knotts. On the next play, Washington scored on a 2-yard run.

Early in the second quarter, Washington and Knotts teamed up again on a 32-yard touchdown play which boosted Maryland’s lead to 24-0. Knotts finished with four receptions for 79 yards.

Towson avoided a shutout late in the third quarter when Indorf threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Lukkas Londono.

The Tigers’ Nathan Kent came off the bench in the fourth quarter and completed an 84-yard touchdown pass down the middle to Jaceon Doss.
