MLB News: Athletics take control late to defeat Reds

Jacob Wilson broke a seventh-inning tie with a double, Carlos Cortes hit his third home run in two days and the Athletics dealt the Cincinnati Reds’ postseason hopes another blow with an 11-5 triumph Saturday night in West Sacramento, Calif.

Nick Kurtz chipped in with a late grand slam and Brent Rooker also homered for the A’s (69-80), who got four innings of shutout ball from four relievers after starter Luis Severino left a 5-5 game after the fifth.

Will Benson and Tyler Stephenson had home runs for the Reds (74-74), who gained no ground in the National League wild-card race despite losses by the two teams immediately ahead of them — the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. The Reds also lost the series opener to the A’s on Friday night, 3-0.

After each team had a two- and a three-run uprising within the first four innings, the teams were deadlocked at 5-5 until Shea Langeliers led off the seventh with a double off Nick Martinez (10-13) and Wilson greeted Graham Ashcraft three batters later with his go-ahead double.

Kurtz’s grand slam, the second of his rookie campaign, blew the game open in a five-run eighth that also included an RBI single by Lawrence Butler. Kurtz’s homer was his 31st of the season.

The homers by Benson in the second, his 11th of the season, and Stephenson in the fourth, also his 11th, accounted for all the Cincinnati scoring. Benson’s homer gave the Reds a 2-0 lead; Stephenson’s three-run blast created the 5-5 tie.

In between, Rooker hit his 28th homer, a solo shot, and Cortes added his fourth, a two-RBI blast, in a three-run second inning that gave the A’s a 3-2 lead.

Wilson’s first of two doubles capped a two-run third that ended Hunter Greene’s night after just 2 1/3 innings. He was charged with five runs on four hits, with four walks and three strikeouts.

Severino got through five innings, during which he also allowed five runs. He served up six hits and two walks, with two strikeouts.

Brady Basso (1-0), who threw a scoreless seventh, was credited with the win.

Cortes, Rooker, Butler and Darell Hernaiz joined Wilson with two hits each for the A’s, who totaled 12 hits, half of which went for extra bases. Langeliers scored three runs, while Butler and Hernaiz scored twice apiece.

Sal Stewart collected three singles for the Reds, who got only two hits off the Oakland bullpen over the final four innings. Stephenson finished with two hits and scored twice in Cincinnati’s 11th loss in its last 17 games.

NCAAF News: Athan Kaliakmanis helps Rutgers stomp Norfolk State

Athan Kaliakmanis threw for 309 yards and a touchdown, his teammates scored twice on blocked punts and Rutgers sailed past FCS Norfolk State 60-10 on Saturday in Piscataway, N.J.

Jett Elad blocked a punt and intercepted a pass for the Scarlet Knights (3-0), who scored their most points since a 66-7 win over Wagner in 2022. Kaliakmanis completed 18 of 26 passes in three quarters of action and Antwan Raymond ran for 79 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Rutgers.

Otto Kuhns went 8-for-20 passing for 90 yards and an interception for coach Michael Vick’s Spartans (1-2). They were more successful on the ground, with Kevon King going for 56 yards and a TD on seven carries.

After Norfolk State went three-and-out to open the game, punter Marco Peery fumbled the snap and tried to kick it on the run. Dylan Braithwaite batted the ball down to himself and took it 6 yards to the house, but Jai Patel’s extra-point attempt was blocked.

Rutgers’ special teams unit scored a second time before the offense could get on the board. In the final minute of the first, Elad broke through the line to block Peery’s punt and Kaj Sanders fielded the lame duck before running 23 yards for a touchdown.

Evan Helfrich booted a 34-yard field goal for Norfolk State before Rutgers’ first scoring drive. KJ Duff made a tremendous one-handed catch while falling out of bounds that was eventually ruled complete, as he tapped one heel inbounds. On the next play, Raymond scored from 3 yards out.

Patel made field goals from 31 and 44 yards before halftime for a 26-3 Rutgers edge.

Rutgers poured it on with three touchdown drives in the third quarter. Kaliakmanis hooked up with Ben Black for a 37-yard touchdown, though the PAT was blocked again.

After the Spartans scored on King’s 25-yard sprint, Raymond punched in his second touchdown from a yard out and Ja’shon Benjamin barreled in from 11 yards in the final minute of the period.

Freshman quarterback AJ Surace made his Rutgers debut in the fourth quarter and had his first two touchdown passes, the first to Athan’s brother Dino Kaliakmanis. With five minutes left, Surace threw a dart to classmate Michael Thomas III, who leapt and tumbled down inbounds for the final score of the day.

Rutgers’ leading receiver Ian Strong sat out with an injury. Duff led the Scarlet Knights with 119 yards on six catches.

MLB News: Bryan Woo stellar again as Mariners down Angels for 8th straight win

Bryan Woo posted his American League-leading 21st quality start of the season and struck out a career-high 13 batters as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Los Angeles Angels 5-3 on Saturday night.

J.P. Crawford homered as the Mariners (81-68) won their eighth in a row to remain tied with Houston atop the AL West and two games ahead of Texas for the league’s third and final wild-card berth.

Jo Adell and Taylor Ward went deep for the Angels (69-80), who lost their third in a row.

Woo (14-7) pitched six innings and gave up two runs on three hits with one walk. The right-hander retired the final 13 batters he faced.

Luke Jackson, Caleb Ferguson and Matt Brash each pitched an inning of relief to close out the victory. Brash earned his fourth save of the season despite allowing Ward’s leadoff homer — the first earned run surrendered by Seattle’s bullpen during its winning streak.

The Mariners took the lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, Cal Raleigh was hit by a pitch and Julio Rodriguez doubled to left. Jorge Polanco drove in both runners with a double into the right field corner.

The Angels responded in the second. Adell led off with a homer to left-center field. Christian Moore drew a walk and, with two outs, Sebastian Rivero and Bryce Teodosio lined singles to right, the latter tying the score at 2-2. Woo fanned Mike Trout to end the inning and didn’t allow another baserunner.

The Mariners regained the lead on Crawford’s solo shot to right-center off rookie left-hander Mitch Farris (1-1) with two outs in the fourth.

Farris, making just his third start, was charged with five runs on five hits over four-plus innings, with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Raleigh led off the fifth with a bloop single to center and Rodriguez and Polanco walked to load the bases with no outs. The Angels brought in Chase Silseth, who caught Eugenio Suarez looking at a called third strike for the first out. Josh Naylor fouled off eight straight pitches, seven with two strikes, before taking a pitch in the dirt and then grounding a two-run single through the right side of the infield to make it 5-2.

NCAAF News: After extended delay, USC opens Big Ten play with win at Purdue

Jayden Maiava threw for 282 yards and rushed for a touchdown while defensive tackle Jamaal Jarrett returned an interception for a score as Southern California opened Big Ten play with a 33-17 win over Purdue Saturday night in West Lafayette, Ind.

Maiava completed 17 of 28 passes as the Trojans (3-0, 1-0) rolled up 460 total yards and kept the ball for 34:07. Ja’Kobi Lane caught three passes for 115 yards, while Waymond Jordan and Eli Sanders added 77 and 75 rushing yards, respectively.

Ryan Browne hit 24 of 39 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown for the Boilermakers (2-1, 0-1), but also tossed three interceptions. One of those was a tipped pass that the 6-foot-5, 360-pound Jarrett gathered in at the USC 30 and lugged 70 yards for a touchdown and a 30-10 advantage with 2:15 left in the third quarter.

Browne found Nitro Tuggle for a 9-yard score 43 seconds into the fourth quarter, and had the Boilermakers on the verge of another touchdown when he was picked by Bishop Fitzgerald at the 2 with 5:37 left. The Trojans converted that into Ryon Sayeri’s fourth field goal, a 19-yarder with 1:10 remaining.

The pregame storyline was a thunderstorm that swept over Ross-Ade Stadium and delayed the opening kickoff for over three hours. But once things got going, USC was able to keep Purdue at arm’s length by scoring on its first three drives.

Sayeri converted the first of his field goals, a 24-yarder, at the 7:39 mark of the first quarter. Maiava scored on a 3-yard run on the first play of the second quarter, capping an 80-yard drive.

After Spencer Porath got Purdue on the board with a 39-yard field goal with 10:49 left in the half, the Trojans marched 75 yards and chewed up over seven minutes of clock. Jordan got the touchdown on a 6-yard run and USC took a 17-3 lead into halftime.

The Trojans outgained the Boilermakers 263-134 in the first half, enabling them to overcome six penalties for 70 yards.

Tuggle (69), EJ Horton (70) and Michael Jackson III (70) combined for 209 receiving yards on 16 catches.

MLB News: Shohei Ohtani’s 49th HR highlights Dodgers’ hit parade in rout of Giants

Shohei Ohtani launched his 49th home run, Teoscar Hernandez and Ben Rortvedt contributed two-run doubles in a six-run fifth inning and a classic pitching matchup of Clayton Kershaw against Logan Webb turned into a slugfest as the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers pounded the San Francisco Giants 13-7 on Saturday night.

Kershaw was touched for four runs in three innings and Webb for six runs in four-plus frames in a game that saw the Dodgers (83-65) retain their 2 1/2-game lead over the San Diego Padres atop the National League West, while the Giants (75-73) missed out on an opportunity to move past the New York Mets in the NL wild-card race.

After the Giants countered a Dodgers tally in the top of the inning with four runs in the last of the first, a majority of the night’s fireworks were shot off by the visitors, who totaled 17 hits.

Ohtani’s homer to center field leading off the third was the loudest blow of the evening, a 454-foot bomb that not only was the longest by a Dodger this season but also the longest at Oracle Park in 2025.

Kershaw was pulled after needing 67 pitches to get just nine outs. He allowed five hits and four walks while striking out two.

Webb took a 4-3 lead into the fifth but never got another out, loading the bases on a pair of walks sandwiching a Freddie Freeman single.

Reliever Jose Butto allowed all three baserunners to score and eventually three more runs, with Hernandez’s double giving the Dodgers the lead and Rortvedt’s two-bagger making it 8-4. Mookie Betts’ RBI single increased the advantage to five by inning’s end.

Webb (14-10), who threw 97 pitches, served up 10 hits and two walks. He struck out five.

An RBI double by Jerar Encarnacion and two-run double by Patrick Bailey gave the Giants life at 9-7 in the last of the sixth, but the Dodgers’ bullpen dominated the rest of the game, preventing the hosts from scoring again. Edgardo Henriquez (1-1) pitched a scoreless fourth inning and was credited with his first big-league win.

Miguel Rojas had a two-RBI double as part of a three-run sixth to help Los Angeles put away the fifth win in its last six games.

Hernandez finished with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored for the Dodgers, whose 13 runs equaled their most since putting up 18 on May 31 against the New York Yankees. Ohtani and Freeman also had three hits; Betts, Rortvedt and Andy Pages all had two apiece; and Ohtani scored three times and Betts twice.

Matt Chapman had two hits and scored twice, and Willy Adames collected two singles for the Giants, who lost for just the fifth time in their last 19 games.

NCAAF News: Behren Morton’s big day spurs No. 21 Texas Tech’s blowout of Oregon State

A lengthy lightning delay couldn’t hinder the high-powered offensive attack of No. 21 Texas Tech and Behren Morton as the Red Raiders stumped struggling Oregon State 45-14 Saturday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas.

Morton had a career day, finishing with a career-high 464 yards in three quarters. He added four touchdown passes and completed 23 of his 35 attempts with an interception as the only blemish.

Coy Eakin and Terrance Carter Jr. torched the Beavers (0-3) secondary, with Eakin finishing with six catches for 139 yards and Carter Jr. hauling in six as well for 102 yards. They had a touchdown apiece.

After a nearly two-and-a-half hour lightning delay that paused the game after six plays, Morton came out firing for the Red Raiders (3-0) on the third play back with a perfectly thrown ball in the corner of the end zone to Eakin for 38 yards.

Morton followed it up with another long score, this time 61-yards to Caleb Douglas to make it 14-0 with 6:27 left in the first. The two teams then traded interceptions, and Texas Tech turned its short field into a J’Koby Williams 30-yard screen pass touchdown to make it 21-0.

The Red Raiders ended their first-half scoring with a seven-play, 80-yard drive that finished with Williams punching it in from 3 yards out.

Williams had a productive day overall with 48 yards on the ground and 116 through the air.

It was quite the opposite for Oregon State, who suffered again from self-inflicted wounds. Maalik Murphy threw two interceptions in Texas Tech territory, and got sacked with no timeouts left to end the first half.

Earlier in the half, the Beavers missed a 47-yard field goal.

Murphy completed 25 of 46 passes for 282 yards with two interceptions and one touchdown. David Wells Jr. had six catches for 103 yards.

The Beavers were held to just seven rushing yards

Morton finished his day by leading two more scoring drives for the Red Raiders; a 23-yard touchdown to Carter and a 21-yard field goal by Upton Bellenfant to push it to 38-0 by the end of the third.

Cameron Dickey scored a 4-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 45-0 with 10:43 left.

The Beavers got on the board late in the fourth by way of two Murphy touchdown passes; a 6-yarder to Bryce Caufield and a 26-yarder to Karson Boschma.

MLB News: Padres slug 4 homers, overpower struggling Rockies

Manny Machado homered for the second straight game, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Bryce Johnson also went deep, and the host San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 11-3 on Saturday night.

Machado, Tatis, Elias Diaz and Luis Arraez finished with two hits each for San Diego (81-68). Arraez left the game after he was hit with a warmup throw as he jogged onto the field to field his position at the start of the ninth inning.

Dylan Cease (8-11) gave up a run on five hits and one walk and struck out six in six innings for the Padres.

Tyler Freeman doubled twice and singled and Jordan Beck had two hits for Colorado, which has lost 18 of its last 22 games. The Rockies (41-108) need just one win in their last 13 games to avoid tying the 2024 Chicago White Sox (41-121) for the most losses in the modern era.

Colorado took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Freeman doubled to lead off the game and scored on Beck’s two-out single, but the Padres scored in each of the first four innings to take control.

Rockies starter Bradley Blalock loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with a single and two walks, and Ramon Laureano’s sacrifice fly gave San Diego its first run. Tatis hit a two-run homer in the second to put the Padres ahead 3-1. It was his 22nd of the season.

Machado led off the third with his 25th homer, and Merrill hit a solo shot later in the frame, his 12th.

Blalock (1-5) left after allowing five runs on five hits and two walks over three innings.

The Padres continued to pad the advantage in the fourth against Antonio Senzatela, who got one out before yielding two singles wrapped around a walk to load the bases. Machado followed with a two-run single and, one out later, Laureano knocked in two more with a double.

Blaine Crim trimmed the lead with a two-run double in the eighth, but Johnson answered with a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning. It was his first of the season.

NCAAF News: No. 6 Georgia rallies to continue mastery of No. 15 Tennessee

Josh McCray ran in the game-winning 1-yard touchdown in overtime to give visiting No. 6 Georgia a 44-41 win over No. 15 Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday.

Gunner Stockton threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns and added another on the ground for Georgia (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference), which won its ninth straight game against the Volunteers.

Joey Aguilar threw for 371 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions for Tennessee (2-1, 0-1), which had its best chance to score its first win over Georgia since 2016. Chris Brazzell II had six catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.

After Max Gilbert – who had missed a potential go-ahead 43-yard field goal in the final seconds of regulation – made a 42-yard field goal to begin overtime, Nate Frazier ran for 21 yards to begin Georgia’s possession. Two plays later, McCray broke the plane of the end zone to win the game.

Trailing by four, Georgia scored on McCray’s first touchdown of the season, a 1-yard rush to help the Bulldogs take a 24-21 edge. After K.J. Bolden picked off Aguilar, Peyton Woodring’s 48-yard field goal pushed Georgia’s lead to 27-21.

Tennessee answered with Aguilar’s 56-yard touchdown pass to Brazzell with seven seconds left in the third.

Woodring’s 23-yard field goal put Georgia back on top, but Aguilar connected with a wide-open Braylon Staley for 32 yards, giving the Volunteers a 35-30 advantage with 11:01 remaining in the fourth.

After Stockton’s fumble, Gilbert’s 48-yard field goal put the Volunteers up 38-30 with 6:40 left in the fourth quarter.

On the ensuing drive, Georgia faced a fourth-and-6 from Tennessee’s 28, where Stockton threw a perfect back-shoulder touchdown to London Humphreys before finding Zachariah Branch for the game-tying two-point conversion with 2:32 remaining.

Aguilar ran in a 4-yard score on the game’s opening drive before Stockton’s 6-yard rushing touchdown knotted the score.

Two plays later, the offensive onslaught continued as Aguilar hit Brazzell for a 72-yard score to put the Volunteers ahead 14-7 with 9:29 left in the first.

Tennessee tacked on as Aguilar connected with Brazell for another score – this time from 14 yards out – extending the margin to 21-7 with 3:37 left in the first quarter.

Georgia cut its deficit in half on the ensuing drive as Stockton hit Branch for a 36-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter. Woodring’s 20-yard field goal trimmed Tennessee’s lead to 21-17 entering halftime.

MLB News: D-backs let late lead slip away, then top Twins in 10

Alek Thomas hit a two-run homer, Blaze Alexander doubled and drove in a pair and the Arizona Diamondbacks outlasted the Minnesota Twins for a 5-2 win in 10 innings on Saturday night in Minneapolis.

Gabriel Moreno also drove in a run for Arizona (74-75), which evened the series at one victory apiece with the rubber match set for Sunday. Geraldo Perdomo finished 2-for-4.

Kody Clemens went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to lead Minnesota (65-83).

Diamondbacks right-hander John Curtiss (3-1) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory. He allowed one hit, walked none and struck out two.

Twins right-hander Cole Sands (4-5) gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits in one inning. He took the loss after picking up the victory in the series opener.

The score was tied at 2-all after nine innings.

Arizona opened the 10th with a sacrifice bunt by Perdomo to move designated runner Jorge Barrosa to third base. Corbin Carroll drew an intentional walk two batters later and swiped a base to put runners on second and third with two outs.

Moreno provided the go-ahead RBI with an infield single that scored Barrosa. Moreno hit a ground ball deep into the hole at shortstop and narrowly beat the throw to first.

Adrian Del Castillo walked in the next at-bat, and Alexander took advantage when he hit a two-run double off the wall in right to make it 5-2.

The three-run 10th helped the Diamondbacks avoid a late collapse. They led 2-0 for most of the game before allowing the Twins to score two in the eighth.

Clemens evened the score at 2-all when he laced a two-run single off Taylor Rashi with the bases loaded, scoring Luke Keaschall and Austin Martin.

Arizona grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth.

Del Castillo led off the inning with a double to center field. Two batters later, Thomas belted a 440-foot, two-run shot to right field off Minnesota starter Joe Ryan. Ryan, an All-Star this year, pitched four innings and allowed two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson tossed six scoreless innings, giving up four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

NCAAF News: No. 2 Penn State pulls away from Villanova in blowout win

Nicholas Singleton ran for two touchdowns and Drew Allar threw for 209 yards and a touchdown as No. 2 Penn State cruised over visiting Villanova 52-6 on Saturday in University Park, Pa.

Allar finished 16-of-29, Kaytron Allen ran for a team-high 86 yards and Singleton ran 20 times for 84 yards for the Nittany Lions (3-0), while Trebor Pena chipped in 60 receiving yards and a touchdown on four catches.

Villanova quarterbacks Pat McQuaide and Tanner Maddocks combined to go 13-of-27 for 96 yards with an interception each. Maddocks got the Wildcats (1-1) on the scoreboard with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Binkowski on the final play of the game.

Penn State opened the game with a 12-play, 78-yard touchdown drive. The Nittany Lions converted a pair of third downs on the march before Singleton punctuated the drive with a 4-yard TD run.

Those were the only points of the first quarter, which ended with Penn State holding a 114-6 advantage in total yards.

Ryan Barker’s 45-yard field goal made it 10-0 early in the second quarter, and his 28-yard kick increased the advantage to 13-0 midway through the period.

On the ensuing possession, Villanova attempted a field goal of its own, but Jack Barnum’s 47-yarder was wide left. Seven plays later, Penn State found the end zone on Allar’s 23-yard TD pass to Pena – a laser between two defenders – to make it 21-0 after a two-point conversion.

Following a Barker field goal early in the third quarter, the Nittany Lions tacked on another touchdown late in the third. Singleton ran for 4 yards on fourth-and-1, setting up his own 3-yard TD run two plays later.

The hosts pulled away in the fourth quarter behind three touchdowns in less than 4 1/2 minutes.

First, Allen unleashed an 18-yard TD run to make it 38-0, and then backup QB Ethan Grunkemeyer found Joey Schlaffer for a 19-yard score. Jahmir Joseph provided the exclamation point with a 49-yard pick-six with 6 1/2 minutes to play.
