Apple Pulls Fortnite from App Store for Bypassing Commission Fees

The Fortnite app was removed from the App Store after the company violated Apple’s decade-old guidelines. Fortnite tried to get around  Apple’s 30% cut of revenue by sneaking in an update. In a bold move,  Epic sues the app Store and the Play Store over the removal.

If Apple ends up removing the app, Epic will no longer be able to update the Unreal Engine  which many iOS and Mac games are built.

Epic said Apple is threatening   to cut off access to iOS and Mac development tools by removing it from the Apple Developer Program unless it cuts a rule-violating payment processing option that it sneaked into Fortnite. The Verge reports– “Epic has also filed a preliminary injunction asking the courts to prevent Apple from cutting it off from the developer program; otherwise, Apple says Epic has until August 28th to make the changes.”

In other news- Apple today announced two new live global radio offerings on Apple Music, now available to music fans in 165 countries. Beginning today, Beats 1, the flagship global radio station, will be renamed Apple Music 1, and two additional radio stations will launch: Apple Music Hits, celebrating everyone’s favorite songs from the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s, and Apple Music Country, spotlighting country music. All You Need to Know to Become a Video Editing Professional

Becoming a video editing professional is no easy task. Luckily for you, this definitive guide will guide you through the process.

All You Need to Know to Become a Video Editing Professional

Becoming a video editing professional is not only a fun career — it’s a lucrative one. Studies show that seasoned video editors make upwards of $40 per hour, which is quite the pay considering you don’t need a degree to work as an editor.

Sure, if you want to work as a media representative, you might need a bachelor’s degree — but most video editing professionals are self-made. If you’re going to become a professional video editor, you’ll need some time, money, and determination.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so if you want to become a master of your trade, you’ll want to start with this article.

Getting Over the Basics

Like any trade, there are a couple of basics that you need to learn before editing. Getting the best software available and boosting up your PC’s performance might be tempting — you need to start small.

Humans are highly visual creatures, so you’re far more likely to retain important information if it has a moving picture attached to it. Lucky for you, websites such as YouTube are chock full of tutorials for aspiring video editors.

Another redeeming feature of YouTube video editing videos is that they’re entirely free. If you want to become great, prepare to learn from the greats. While YT won’t likely make you a professional, you can learn quite a lot of the essentials.

Read blogs, watch videos, and find articles based around the topic of video editing. That will give you the push you need to delve deeper into the profession.

Prepare for The Costs

Now, this is one of the most underestimated requirements of video editing. We all know that you need a pretty powerful PC to run professional video editing software, but people underestimate the cost of the software as well.

When combined, the hardware and software required for professional video editing don’t come cheap. If you can’t afford high-end software, there are many free options on the internet. Even if they’re not nearly as powerful as the premium options, they’ll give you a taste of the basics.

Driving the new S class is simple if you learned to drive on your dad’s Corolla, and that rule translates well to video editing. The tougher the start, the smoother the sailing.

Get a Course

One of the best ways to get a hold of some direct education on video editing is to get an online course. There are numerous different courses online, and quite a selection of websites that offer them.

Some of these courses can cost up to a couple of hundred dollars, while others are far cheaper. If you’ve done your initial research and have an idea of what you’re doing, you’ll want a more advanced course. Don’t pay for the information you already know.

Quite a lot of people rehash the same things many times over. You’ll want to find a reputable course that will educate you on the matter of video editing. Using a course to do this is, by far, the best way to get some in-depth information on video editing.

There are a lot of courses out there. Some are based on video editing in general, and others are software specific. If you have a general idea about which software you’d like to use, we urge you to get a software-specific course.

Software Mastery

Good video editing is synonymous with course mastery. If you want to be a professional as fast as possible, you’ll want to know your tools inside and out and know how to create wonderful video edits.

There are millions of different software solutions out there, all with varying levels of popularity. The three most popular options are Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro X, and Corel Video Studio. Below, we’ll go over some of the most important features of each program:

 1. Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Best for PC
  • Good editing features
  • VR editing features
  • Multiple templates and presets
  • Motion Graphics
  • Complex learning curb
  • Lumetri support
  • Direct publishing
  • Quite expensive

2. Final Cut Pro X

  • Best for MAC
  • 360 ° editing
  • VR editing options
  • Motion graphic templates and presets
  • Relatively simple learning curb
  • Built-in audio editing program
  • Automatic saving
  • Automatic rendering
  • Automatic transcoding
  • Quite expensive

3. Corel VideoStudio

  • Great all-rounder
  • Full VR capabilities
  • Multicam editing
  • Multipoint motion tracking features
  • Time remapping
  • Elaborate video masking
  • Audio editing and ducking
  • Full 4K Ultra HD support
  • Fast rendering features
  • Relatively affordable

All three options are equally as viable and well accepted in the world of video editing. Their unique differences make them ideal for most tasks, but some are better for more niche-specific editing. If you want to become a video editing professional, any one of these will do the trick.

After you’ve chosen software, learned about it, and practiced a little, it’s time for the most laborious task of them all. Practice makes perfect, and in the world of video editing, you’ll want to know as much as possible. Become a master of your software, and you’ll be earning money in no time.

Starting Your Video Editing Career

Video editing services are available all across the web, and you can find them without much effort. There is a huge demand for freelance video editing specialists, so that’s a fantastic starting point. Websites like Freelancer, Upwork, and Fiverr are all home to freelance video editors, and you can join them in no time.

If you have the necessary skills and are looking to make some money, it’s time to branch yourself out into business. Make a website, a LinkedIn profile, and all the professional media you can. You need to make yourself visible, so providing a sample of your work is always preferable.

Once you’ve laid down the ground rules, it’s time to bid on projects. Every start is rough, but don’t lose your confidence. If you’re certain in your skills and know what you’re doing, your business will eventually come off the ground — congratulations, you are now a professional video editor.

What Does Walmart Have That Amazon Doesn’t?

Walmart is the world’s largest grocer. In 2018, Walmart’s digital food sales increased 53%  compared to 8% on Amazon. Walmart’s total equity is a whopping $79.6 billion dollars, while Amazon’s is $43.55 billion dollars.

Amazon’s $14 billion acquisition of Whole Foods Market in 2017, still struggles to gain share of the food and beverage market, with only an increase of 0.1 percent in 2014 to 1.9 percent in 2019.

Walmart’s food and beverage segment specifically grocery – has been its stronghold which  Amazon has found difficult to penetrate   so far. Whole Foods also has a much higher food price point than items sold at Walmart and in a pandemic shoppers are more likely to shop where they can get the best discounts.

Walmart is also strengthening its online presence to compete with Amazon. And while Amazon may have its share of  e-commerce sales in electronics, books, and clothing, Walmart still leads the race by a hair increasing from $349 billion to $403 billion last year. E-Commerce sales, doubles to about $27.8 billion, roughly doubling the 14 billion they brought in in 2017.

Q1 results were significantly affected by the COVID-19 health crisis including higher incremental sales and related costs.

Sales

  • Comp sales increased 10.0% with comp ticket higher by 16.5% while comp transactions declined 5.6%. As a result of the health crisis and related stay-at-home mandates, customers consolidated store shopping trips with larger average baskets and shifted more purchases to eCommerce.
  • E-commerce sales were strong growing 74% and contributed approximately 390 basis points to segment comp sales growth. Store pickup and

delivery, ship to home, ship from store, and marketplace channels were strong throughout the quarter.

  • February comp sales grew 3.8%. In mid-March, stock-up trips surged with March comp sales increasing 15.4%. Store sales slowed during the first

half of April but re-accelerated mid-month as customers spent government stimulus money resulting in a 9.5% April comp sales increase.

  • Q1 strength in food, consumables, and health & wellness was partially offset by softness in discretionary areas such as apparel.
  • Total net sales growth of 10.5% included an approximately 1% benefit from Leap Day sales.
  • Gross profit rate was down 113 basis points due to the carryover of last year’s price investments, crisis-related shifts in sales mix to lower-margin categories and channel mix towards eCommerce, general merchandise markdowns, and temporary closures of Vision Centers and Auto Care Centers.
  • Expenses – Strong sales contributed to operating expense leverage of 89 basis points despite the approximate $670-M of crisis-related incremental costs. Associate investments, wage pressures and increased maintenance costs were partially offset by lower marketing, travel, and consulting costs.
  • Operating income was also affected by a decline in Other Income due to crisis-related temporary closures of in-store tenants and related lost income.
  • Inventory declined 6.1% reflecting higher than normal out-of-stocks in some categories.
  • Format/omni growth
  • We closed 2 Supercenters and 1 Neighborhood Market. We remodeled about 80 stores.
  • As of Q1, we had nearly 3,300 store pickup locations and more than 1,850 stores with same-day grocery delivery. Express Delivery was launched.

In other news, the Californian Court of Appeals court ruled Amazon will be responsible for defective products sold through its marketplace, including 3rd   party sellers who sell on the Amazon platform. If any of these 3rd party sellers start leaving the Amazon website, sales figures could surely change.   3rd party sellers  are up 53% since  Q 2-07 according to Statistica on Amazon’s marketplace.

A California state appellate court followed its federal predecessor in finding Amazon should face product liability claims for defective goods sold on its website by third-party vendors. In a 47-page order, Fourth District of California Judge Patricia Guerrero reversed a finding by Judge Randa Trapp granting summary judgment in favor of Amazon in a product liability case brought by Angela Bolger. Why Google Meet is a Cheaper and Better Version of Zoom

0

In the coming weeks, Google will be rolling out new security capabilities for Google Meet that give hosts even more control over meetings, such as who can join or collaborate within them.

Google Meet is far a better and cheaper option then Zoom.

Virtual meetings, remote collaboration, flexible hours: it’s becoming clear that these new ways of working are here to stay. In my conversations with customers and business leaders since the onset of COVID-19, I’ve seen workplace transformation go from an almost theoretical long-term goal to an urgent priority. Employers and  workers want  more flexible ways of working, and delivering on this requires the right technology.

But flexibility isn’t the only thing that workers want. Remote working has significantly increased the demands we’re getting from many directions–in both our professional and our personal lives. People tell us they feel overloaded with too much information and too many tasks across too many different tools. Instead of learning another tool, we need the tools we already use to be even more helpful, and work together, in an integrated, intuitive way.

That’s why today, we’re introducing  a better home for work. G Suite now intelligently brings together the people, content, and tasks you need to make the most of your time.  We’re integrating core tools like video, chat, email, files, and tasks, and making them better together, so that you can more easily stay on top of things, from anywhere.

Customers like Colgate-Palmolive and ATB Financial, who’ve previewed the new product experience, are giving us great feedback about this integrated workspace. Gene Molloy, VP IT End User Technology at Iron Mountain, said it “seamlessly brings together the best of G Suite to make us more efficient with less context switching, allowing us to focus on the task at hand with fewer distractions.”

Bringing things together

As we looked at ways to deepen the integration between email, chat, and video–three core pillars of communication–we started where most of us begin our workday: our inbox. To easily  join video meetings straight from your inbox, we brought Meet into Gmail on the web,  Android, and iOS–and  made it free for everyone. And  last month, we brought Google Chat into Gmail on web to help you communicate more seamlessly, without the disruption of switching tabs. Soon, Chat will join Gmail on Android and iOS, making it even easier to do more from one place, wherever you are.

1 Meet in Gmail.jpg

We’re also enhancing the collaboration features in Chat rooms by adding shared files and tasks, making rooms an even better solution for longer-term projects. With quick access to shared chat, important documents, and to-dos in one place, it’s easier for everyone in a group to stay on the same page. Plus, Chat lets you create rooms that include people outside your company, like contractors or consultants, so your group can be not only cross-functional but also cross-organizational.

2 chat rooms.gif

To make rooms even more useful, we’ve infused them with real-time collaboration by adding the ability to open and co-edit a document with your team without leaving Gmail. This makes it easier for you to collaborate directly within the context of where you’re doing your work in the moment–so, for example, you can chat about the changes you’re making to a document in real time, or assign a new task (or mark one complete!), without switching between screens.

3 docs side-by-side.jpg

This new integrated workspace also makes it easy to access your favorite third-party apps, including DocuSign, Salesforce, and Trello, so you can get updates and take action within any kind of conversation–across Gmail, Chat, and rooms.

4 integrated workspace.gif

Making things better together

One thing we’ve heard again and again from our users is how switching between apps interrupts their flow–and their focus. That’s why in this new integrated experience, we’ve been thoughtful about how to help you work more fluidly.

A few examples: you can quickly join a video call from a chat, forward a chat message to your inbox, create a task from a chat message–everything connects together in a way that makes it easy for you to manage the flow of your work and get more done.

5 video chat.jpg

Next, because quickly finding what you need is paramount to productivity, we’ve also expanded Gmail’s powerful search capability to include Chat, so it’s easier to find everything in one place.

Mail Search.gif

And lastly, we’re introducing several tools to help you prioritize and stay focused. You can now:

  • Pin important rooms so they’re easier to find and access
  • Set your availability to “Do Not Disturb”
  • Better protect your time with status notices like “Out of office”

If you’d like to try this new integrated workspace out yourself, you can  sign up here. We’ll be expanding availability to more customers over the following weeks, and you’ll be notified when it’s ready for you to try.

Enhanced security for Meet and Chat

For flexible work models to succeed, organizations must continue to maintain security and compliance for their users and data. More than 6 million businesses trust and rely on G Suite to protect their most sensitive data. Today, we’re also announcing several new security features for Meet and Chat.

In the coming weeks, we will be rolling out new security capabilities for Google Meet that give hosts even more control over meetings, such as who can join or collaborate within them. Starting with consumer and G Suite for Education customers, these features will include:

  • Knocking controls:  Once an attendee is ejected, they won’t be able to attempt to join the same meeting again by knocking, unless the host re-invites them.
  • Safety locks:  Hosts can now decide which attendees can chat or present in the meeting.

In addition, we’ll be extending the strong phishing protections that we’ve built within Gmail to Google Chat. For example, if a user clicks on a link in Chat, it will be scanned in real-time and flagged if it’s found to contain malicious content. Get all the details about the latest G Suite security features  here.

6 enhanced security.jpg

More on the way

Communication and collaboration are about connecting people, and we’re always looking for ways to better integrate our products to help everyone work better, together. Some of the recent improvements we’ve rolled out include letting you  respond to document comments or action items directly from your inbox on mobile, helping you connect and analyze data across the organization with  Connected Sheets, and introducing new  collaboration capabilities in our hardware offerings. (You can learn more about these and other new features in  our sessions  at Google Cloud Next ’20: OnAir.)

In the future, you’ll see our integrated workspace expand even further–with features like picture-in-picture video calls right in Gmail; the integration of Google Meet into our content tools like Docs, Sheets, and Slides; and more. Our goal is to provide an intelligent and seamless solution that gives everyone the ability to make a real impact, and the flexibility to work exactly where and how they want.

b02.jpg

Looking ahead, I’m excited to help more companies make the transition to flexible work with G Suite. I still remember my first few weeks at Google–how amazed I was that Smart Compose effortlessly completed my sentences, even as I switched between English and Spanish; or that Slides not only enabled, but suggested that I present directly from my phone to a meeting (and it worked!). The features that once surprised and delighted me have now become table-stakes capabilities I can’t live without. Work is more seamless, flexible, and productive than I could’ve imagined. And that’s the way it should be for everyone.

Almost half of US teens who date experience stalking and harassment

Social media makes dating-related harassment and stalking that much easier.

Falling in love for the first time can be a thrill, and teen dating is important to adolescent development. But according to the results of a study that my research team recently conducted, these early forays into romance often veer into unhealthy territory.

As many as 48% of 12- to 18-year-olds who describe themselves as having had a dating partner in the past year have also experienced dating-related stalking and harassment.

Not only can dating-related stalking and harassment cause anxiety and depression in teens, but it can also be a harbinger for more serious forms of abuse should the relationship continue.

Our study collected self-reported survey data from 320 adolescents from across the U.S. through the Survey on Teen Relationships and Intimate Violence. Youths with dating experience were asked whether a dating partner had ever spied on or followed them, damaged something that belonged to them or gone through their online accounts. Nearly half — 48% — said that they had experienced one or more of these behaviors, while 43% said that they had done these things to someone who they were dating.

Disturbingly, these statistics suggest that surveilling or acting aggressively toward a crush or partner isn’t just common among U.S. teenagers. They may also think it’s normal or acceptable.

Due to inexperience, adolescents may not recognize when they’re being treated poorly. And, because they’re still developing, they may not know how to handle a situation in which someone’s attention is overwhelming or scaring them. It can be difficult for young people to know what constitutes healthy and unhealthy romantic pursuit, as well. Meanwhile, their media and social media diets don’t necessarily feature ideal relationship role models.

It’s important for teenagers to hear from adults that it isn’t normal to constantly want to know what their partner is up to and that monitoring their social media posts or going into their private accounts is invasive — before, during and after a relationship.

I find that parents tend to have one of two extreme reactions to the idea of their teens dating for the first time. There’s the “over my dead body” reaction, which usually means they forbid their children from dating altogether. Or there’s the “aw, puppy love is so cute” response, in which they don’t dig too deeply into the contours of the relationship.

A third option is for parents to appreciate the ways in which dating is normal and helpful for the development of social skills; for example, dating can give teens practice ending relationships, which can give them the confidence to get into and out of intimate partnerships in adulthood. At the same time, there’s a role for parents: Pay attention to what’s going on, and be there to guide them if there are signs that a relationship is becoming unhealthy.

President Donald J. Trump Has Secured a Historic Deal Between Israel and the United Arab Emirates

SECURING A  HISTORIC AGREEMENT: President Donald J. Trump has secured the first agreement to normalize relations between Israel and a major Arab country in decades.

  • President Donald J. Trump has brokered an agreement to normalize relations between the United Arab Emirates and Israel — the first such agreement between Israel and a major Arab country since 1994.
  • The countries have committed to the exchange of embassies and ambassadors, and to begin cooperation in a broad range of fields including education, healthcare, trade, and security.
  • This historic breakthrough is the most significant step toward peace in the Middle East in over 25 years.
    • The United Arab Emirates is the first major Arab state to recognize Israel since the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty was signed on October 26, 1994.
SHAPING PEACE THROUGH BOLD LEADERSHIP: President Trump recognized it was time for a new approach to achieve peace, security, and opportunity for the people of the Middle East.
  • This historic breakthrough was made possible by President Trump’s leadership and expertise as a dealmaker.
  • The President built trust with our regional allies and reoriented their strategic calculus by identifying shared interests and common opportunities, moving them away from perpetuating old conflicts.
  • This deal provides a foundation for further advances toward regional peace in the future.
    • The United States believes that more Arab and Muslim countries will follow the United Arab Emirates’ lead and normalize relations with Israel.

BUILDING A MORE PEACEFUL AND PROSPEROUS REGION: This agreement will help put the region on a truly transformative path: one with stability, security, and opportunity.
  • This agreement is a major breakthrough for Muslims throughout the world who wish to come in peace to pray at the Al Aqsa Mosque, as they will now be able to fly to Tel Aviv through Abu Dhabi to do so and will be welcomed.
    • By encouraging more visits, it will help counter the extremists who use the false narrative that the Al Aqsa Mosque is under attack and that Muslims cannot pray at this holy site.
  • Expanded business and financial ties between these two thriving economies will also accelerate growth and economic opportunity across the Middle East.
  • This agreement will allow further advancement of the President’s vision for finding a comprehensive, fair, realistic, and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians and in the region.

Yale saliva test for COVID-19 receives FDA’s emergency approval after a trial on NBA players

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the first diagnostic test with the option of using home-collected saliva samples for COVID-19 testing. Specifically, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization  (EUA) to Rutgers Clinical Genomics Laboratory for their COVID-19 laboratory developed test (LDT), which had been previously added to the high complexity molecular-based LDT “umbrella” EUA, to permit testing of samples self-collected by patients at home using the Spectrum Solutions LLC SDNA-1000 Saliva Collection Device. This announcement builds on last month’s EUA for the  first diagnostic test with a home-collection option, which uses a sample collected from the patient’s nose with a nasal swab and saline.

 Yale press news release.

The method requires no extraction of nucleic acid and uses several readily available reagents.

“This test is also unique because it does not require a separate nucleic acid extraction step,” the FDA said. “This is significant because the extraction kits used for this step in other tests have been prone to shortages in the past. Being able to perform a test without these kits enhances the capacity for increased testing, while reducing the strain on available resources.”

“Wide-spread testing is critical for our control efforts. We simplified the test so that it only costs a couple of dollars for reagents, and we expect that labs will only charge about $10 per sample. If cheap alternatives like SalivaDirect can be implemented across the country, we may finally get a handle on this pandemic, even before a vaccine,” said Nathan Grubaugh assistant professor at Yale and part of the team of researchers who led the program.

“Authorizing additional diagnostic tests with the option of at-home sample collection will continue to increase patient access to testing for COVID-19. This provides an additional option for the easy, safe and convenient collection of samples required for testing without traveling to a doctor’s office, hospital or testing site,” said FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D. “We will continue to work around the clock to support the development of accurate and reliable tests, as we have done throughout this pandemic. The FDA has authorized more than 80 COVID-19 tests and adding more options for at-home sample collection is an important advancement in diagnostic testing during this public health emergency.”

Desperate Movie Theaters Are About To Open Up Again Offering 15 Cent Movie Tickets.

Is it safe?

AMC Entertainment for one day only will be offering “movies in 2020 at 1920 prices” – with tickets going for only 15 cents per person.

The following movie theaters AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC), Cinemark  (NYSE:CNK), Regal Entertainment  (NYSE:RGC)  and Marcus  (NYSE:MCS) will open some locations next week as the industry goes for a proof-of-life test during the pandemic.

The chains are planning on instituting safety measures like enhanced cleaning, fresh-air replacement and staggered showtimes with limited capacity.

The box office tallies won’t be as important as building some confidence with moviegoers in front of bigger releases like Christopher Nolan’s Tenet during Labor Day weekend. Companies likes National CineMedia  (NASDAQ:NCMI)  and IMAX  (NYSE:IMAX)  will also be hoping for a steady return of theater business.
