The Mexican government should be commended for the capture of the fugitive governor Tomas Yarrington in Italy. Yarrington’s detention is an important milestone in efforts to prevent corrupt government officials from facilitating the conduct of cartel traffickers. The prosecution of corruption by high ranking government officials, even years after the crimes were committed, is critical to disrupting cartel trafficking and the violence with which it is associated.
The capture and prosecution of Tomas Yarrington will help restore peace to Tamaulipas. I am hopeful that law enforcement officials from the United States and Mexico will marshal all of their diplomatic resources to ensure that Yarrington is extradited to the United States and that the federal criminal process be allowed to take its course.

“We are all shaky and so disgusted,” said a passenger on board a United Airlines flight after a man was yanked into the aisle and dragged off the plane.
Many airlines overbook flights to ensure that even if some passengers miss their flight, the seat will still be occupied by someone else.
They don’t care about the inconvenience to customers like this man, they only care about ensuring a profit.
This man paid for a legitimate seat, followed the rules and did what he was supposed to do. United overbooked the flight (their mistake, not his) and tried to get volunteers to give up their seat on the flight. This man didn’t want to volunteer, which was his right, being a valid ticket holder, so they forcibly removed him.

French far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen denied on Sunday that the French state was responsible for the wartime round-up of Jews at a Paris cycling track who were then sent to Nazi death camps, AFP reports.
Former President Jacques Chirac and current President Francois Hollande have both apologized for the role French police played in the round-up of more than 13,000 Jews at the Vel d’Hiv cycling track which was ordered by Nazi officers in 1942.
Le Pen, however, told the LCI television channel on Sunday, “I don’t think France is responsible for the Vel d’Hiv.”
“I think that generally speaking if there are people responsible, it’s those who were in power at the time. It’s not France,” she continued.

Very sad to hear about the death of the beloved John Clarke, aka Fred Dagg and impersonator extraordinaire of various past and present members of Aus parliament. Known for his intelligent wit, he was also a gracious, kind man and a fantastic communicator. We fell in love with him all over again. Our heartfelt condolences to his partner, family, friends, colleagues, and Bryan, his perfect foil. He will sorely be missed.

Stanislav Lisov, a computer programmer from Taganrog, a town on Russia’s Black Sea coast, had arrived at Barcelona’s international airport with his wife on Jan. 13 when Spanish Civil Guard police arrested him on an FBI warrant issued through Interpol. The charges: electronic and computer fraud.
“We were detained at the airport in Barcelona, when we came to return a rented car before flying out to Lyon, to continue our trip and visit friends. When we were getting out of the car, two police officers approached, showed us the badge, and said they were detaining my husband,” Darya Lisova told the Russian state-operated RT network.
Spain has not yet extradited Lisov, who is blamed for being the architect of a sophisticated Trojan, NeverQuest, used in stealing log-in credentials for bank accounts.
Here is a rundown of some other recent cases:
â–ª Yevgeniy Nikulin, 29, was arrested by police while dining with his girlfriend in a hotel restaurant in Prague’s Old Town Oct. 5. He has been indicted by a federal grand jury in northern California on charges of computer intrusion, identity theft and other crimes for penetrating into the systems of high-tech companies LinkedIn, Dropbox and Formspring. Since then, Washington and Moscow have been in a tug-of-war over Nikulin’s extradition.
â–ª Olga Komova, a 26-year-old Uzbek, and Dmitry Ukrainsky, a Russian, were arrested in mid-2016 at beach resorts in Thailand and accused of stealing more than $28 million as part of a mega cyber bank fraud ring. Komova has turned up in U.S. custody and faces federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering. How she was brought to the United States is unclear. Her U.S. lawyer, Michael Soroka, declined to discuss the case.
When extradition isn’t an option, U.S. authorities lure alleged hackers to jurisdictions where they can be arrested. Such tactics have been decried by Moscow as “kidnapping.”
Seleznev, the identity thief who is the son of the Duma deputy, chose to vacation at a five-star resort in the Indian Ocean archipelago nation of the Maldives in 2014 precisely because it has no extradition treaty with the United States.
U.S. officials got word and persuaded Maldives authorities to intercept Seleznev at the airport, where in a fast-paced operation he was bundled on a private plane to Guam, a U.S. territory in the western Pacific, then flown to Seattle to face federal charges.
Upon his conviction last August, prosecutors said Seleznev had stolen millions of credit card numbers, causing 3,700 banks $169 million in losses. He faces a 40-year jail term.
No matter where the hackers travel, prosecutors say they will follow.”

McFarland will leave her National Security Council post and will be named the U.S. ambassador to Singapore, an administration official said.
After the Ford administration left office, and with a desire as she later said to be “taken really seriously,” Troia by dint of a scholarship studied at Oxford University. There she earned a combined master’s degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. Then she went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she undertook concentrations on nuclear weapons, China, and the Soviet Union. She spent three years there in study toward PhD, ending up in the all but dissertation state. The title of her unfinished thesis was “The Sino-Soviet nuclear confrontation of 1969 from the point of view of the Herman Kahn stepladder period of escalation”. A second thesis attempt may have been entitled “The President’s Strategic Defense Initiative”.[15]
