Get your COVID-19 vaccine at CVS and win a prize

CVS, the giant pharmacy chain with stores across the nation is handing out excellent prizes to those who get vaccinated at their pharmacies. A   new initiative to reward those who plan to receive or have already received a vaccine shot was announced on Thursday. These people can take part in its new “One Step Closer” sweepstakes, which offers over 1000 prizes including a few lavish ones. The sweepstakes begin on June 1 and will end on June 10.

Some of the “top of the chain” prizes include

  • a seven-day cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line
  • VIP rickets to Super Bowl 2022
  • a two-night stay at Wyndham Hotel
  • $5000 cash for family reunions

In a press release, Dr. Kyu Rhee said that they were grateful for the millions of people who had received one of the more than 17 million doses that they had administered at CVS Health, but they had a long way to go.

CVS announced the sweepstakes to increase interest in the vaccination process as they have been “working to close the gap in vaccine hesitancy.” The company cited a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey that reported high percentages of vaccine hesitancy among adults over the age of 18. CDC found that 17.6 percent of adults were hesitating to get vaccinated,

Other private companies have also stepped up and offered freebies to encourage vaccinations. In early May, Unilever gave away free popsicles and Klondike shakes to health care workers and those who were getting their jabs at vaccinated sites in select locations in New York, Dallas, Fort Worth, St. Louis, Phoenix and Memphis for one day only.

Krispy Kreme has been giving a free glazed doughnut and a medium coffee on Mondays from March 29 to those who show their vaccine cards. They have also delivered free doughnuts to select vaccine centers throughout the nation, in appreciation of the health workers and other personnel at these sites. In mid-April, Budweiser offered a free beer to adults over the age of 21 in their A Beer on the Bud campaign for the first 10,000 who registered and uploaded a photo of their vaccination cards.

States have also offered incentives with subways passes at select subway station vaccine sites in New York. Ohio, New York and Maryland have also offered several prizes and lotteries to improve the vaccine drive, whose numbers are diminishing.

President Joe Biden has a goal that 70 percent of the nation’s adult population should receive at least one vaccine dose by July 4. According to the CDC, 50 percent of adults have been fully vaccinated as of Tuesday. Both states and huge private corporates are offering incentives to increase the vaccine rollout and to decrease vaccine hesitancy with gifts and incentives

Pending home sales fall to a new low as the housing market sinks back to reality in April

0

Could the housing market possibly be falling? Pending home sales dropped 4.4% in April compared with March, the National Association of Realtors reported Thursday.

A year ago, pending home prices were the highest, up to 52% before   sales reached a new low at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Things may be changing as buyers cannot get into homes due to other buyers overbidding, and lack of inventory on the market due to quick sales and high demand.   It has been reported that many buyers are even bypassing inspections to get into a house with low interest rates that are available right now.  The 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell to 2.95% from 3.00% the previous week, following the trend of the 10-year Treasury yield.

Buyers are aware that inventory is low, and they want to  grab what they can get at these low interest rates. With this situation, it is only natural that houses are more expensive than ever.

Buyers may choose to wait to get back into the market because it is so heated right now. If buyers are willing sit on the sidelines, it may mean a reduction in home prices and sales.

Three regions showed declines for contract signings.  The Midwest showed an incline of 3.5%, and the  Northeast showed the largest decline of 12.9%, with the  South sipping 6.1%. The West had the smallest decline of just of 2.6%.

For March, the savings rate fell in April, decreasing to 14.9% from about 28% in the month prior. The economic recovery still has a way to go.

How to Avoid Overbidding for a House

Everyone’s situation is different. You need to ask yourself, is it worth it to pay more over asking?

Decide if you are willing to overbid on a home that may be already overpriced. Do your research and find out if the home is truly overpriced for the current market conditions. Find out   how long the listing has been on the market. We hear of properties selling super-fast, but sometimes contracts and pending offers fall flat. Circle back to these properties, you may get lucky with that dream house you always wanted.   Research the timelines and ask your broker why this has occurred- if they have that information. Maybe you can support some type of documentation to support a lower offer. Find out what motivates the seller. Define “fair price” and know the comps. Request to include an appraisal contingency. Work with a buyer’s agent and comparison-shop for your mortgage. Get ready to still negotiate and be ready to walk away if it does not feel right.

Remember, you really make money when you buy a house, not when you sell. If you buy with a clear head, know what you can afford, and understand the true value of the home currently and beyond, you’ll succeed.

The commercial real estate market is recovering, although commercial real estate transactions and the underlying market fundamentals are still weak compared to pre-pandemic conditions. In the first quarter of 2021, commercial transactions were 28% below the level one year ago. Commercial real estate prices continue to firm up, but valuations were broadly down by 6% from one year ago. Reports the National Association of Realtors

Scientology’s secrets exposed in the Celebrity Actor Danny Masterson rape case

Actor Danny Masterson was arraigned in court along with his attorney Thomas Mesereau for rape in 2020 in the Los Angeles Superior  Court.

Masterson who starred in the  2000s sitcom “That ’70s Show,” was a member of The Church of Scientology. Church officials tried to stop its inner workings being displayed on trial. Their legal team adamantly defends itself against what goes on inside the organization and   is not for the public eye.

The hearing last week in court did disclose information about The Church of Scientology and what occurs within their organization.

Three women took the stand recounting sexual assaults with actor Danny Masterson, celebrity Scientologist. The three women told the court that the church tried to tell them not to disclose the alleged assaults to the police.

One of the women said she was raped by Masterson in his Hollywood home while she was unconscious. An attorney from the Scientology church showed up at her home she claims, and told her to she would be  discharged from the church if she went to the authorities.

The judge ruled there was sufficient evidence against Masterson to allow the case to proceed to trial. Judge Olmedo concluded that Scientology has “an expressly written doctrine” that “not only discourages but prohibits” its members from reporting one another to law enforcement. The policy explained why several of the women did not report Masterson’s alleged crimes to the police for more than a decade, the judge found.

The church has quite a few   big   celebrities among its parishioners. They also have a  “Celebrity Centre” in the heart of Hollywood, that is their main headquarters operate. Celebrity Tom Cruise has been a member along with Elisabeth Moss, Jenna Elfman, Laura Prepon,Danny Masterson,Lisa Marie Presley, and Juliette Lewis to name a few.

Karin Pouw,  the churches top spokesperson claimed without evidence the women are  misrepresenting comments made by Leah Remini,   the celebrity actress who was an outspoken critic of Scientology. Leah left the church in 2013.

“Scientology had managed to persuade courts that you can’t inquire into our religious practices and beliefs and have managed to dissuade much discussion about Scientology,” Rinder said. Rinder is a co-executive producer with Remini of an A&E series about Scientology.

Rinder said that in recent years, the church’s responses to media inquiries had become “hermit-like.” The fact that the church issued a detailed defense of its practices to The Times is a sign the Masterson case has become a significant problem for the church, he said.

“The fact that it’s Danny Masterson from ‘That ’70s Show’ … it’s not just local media reporting on a local case, it blows it up way bigger. It becomes part of Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein,” he said, referring to the #MeToo movement, which has identified several celebrities as sexual predators. “That instantly puts it into a different zone. Within Scientology, this becomes panic stations, high alert.” Reports the Los Angeles Times.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announces the “Vax for the Win” Program with $116 million in total prizes to residents who get their COVID-19 vaccines.

To win the prize money, you must be over the age of 12. All residents are eligible to enter for the contest upon showing proof of vaccination.

“Getting every eligible Californian vaccinated is how we bring our state roaring back from this pandemic,” said Governor Newsom. “California has already made incredible progress in the fight against COVID-19, with the lowest case rates in the country, while administering millions more vaccines than any other state. But we aren’t stopping there, we’re doing everything it takes to get Californians vaccinated as we approach June 15 to help us fully reopen safely.”

More than 62.8 percent of Californians aged 12+ are at least partially vaccinated, but an estimated 12 million people who are eligible still have not gotten a vaccine to protect their health and the well-being of their communities.

“Some Californians weren’t ready to get their COVID-19 vaccine on day one, and that’s okay. This program is designed to encourage those who need extra support to get vaccinated and help keep California safe,” said Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, California Department of Public Health Director and State Public Health Officer. “The State will work closely with our partners at local health departments and community-based organizations to ensure the program reaches families living in communities with the lowest vaccination rates, who might face language barriers and other obstacles.”

Thirty winners in total will be selected for the “$50,000 Fridays” cash prize drawings on June 4 and June 11, totaling $1.5 million. On June 15, $1.5 million will be awarded to 10 lucky Californians — for a grand total of $15 million in cash prizes. Winners must complete their vaccination to claim their prize. If someone under 18 wins, the cash will be put in a savings account for them until they turn 18.

Beginning on May 27, the next two million people who begin and complete their COVID-19 vaccination will automatically be eligible to receive a $50 prepaid or grocery card, worth a total of $100 million. It gives them the option to select from a $50 Virtual Prepaid Card (which can be spent online, in-store where major debit cards are accepted, or added to a mobile wallet to be used to shop in stores that accept mobile wallets), or a $50 grocery gift card from Kroger (which includes Ralphs, Food 4 Less and Foods Co.) or Albertsons , Safeway, Vons, Pavilions and Andronico’s Community Markets, while supplies last.

For more information, visit  COVID19.ca.gov/vax-for-the-win. To schedule an appointment to be vaccinated, visit  MyTurn.ca.gov or call the CA COVID-19 Hotline at 1-833-422-4255. Source

Belarus cited bomb threat email to divert Ryanair plane came 24 minutes after pilots were informed

0

On May 26, the Daily Beast reported that the bomb threat email that was allegedly sent by Hamas prompting the Ryanair plane to land at Minsk, was sent 24 minutes after the Belarusian authorities told the pilot and crew members about the threat. The Palestinian group had denied that it has sent the email. Another glaring mistake in the events that unfolded that fateful day was that the email purportedly asked for a ceasefire between Palestine and Israel. There was already a ceasefire in place, a couple of days ago, on Friday. This was two days before the email was sent, close to half an hour after the diversion of the plane to Minsk. After the plane landed in Minsk, a dissident journalist from the country was detained by the authorities.

No one is willing to give credence to the Hamas theory. Spokesman for Hamas Fawzi Barhoum rejected the involvement of the Palestine based group. Everyone, except the state actors and possibly Russia, have called it a plan by the Lukashenko authoritarian government, looking to silence its own citizens.

The Daily Beast, together with the Dossier Center reported that the original email is full of inconsistencies. It does not follow the timeline of the events as they unfolded on that disastrous day for the dissident Roman Protasevich, who was on that fated Ryanair flight. He is one of the co-founders of Telegram’s Nexta channel. He was detained in Minsk, subsequently jailed and allegedly coerced to confess to crimes against the state.

Belarus and Lukashenko’s regime have faced the ire of most of the countries around the world. The entire European Union bloc will not flying through the country’s airspace. The state-owned Belavia air fleet has also been banned from traveling to or through countries in the European Union.

Initially the European Union and the Ireland based Ryanair had understated the incident on social media. However, both these involved parties have now called the diversion of the flight under false pretenses a “hijacking” and “state sponsored piracy.” President Biden called the incident “outrageous” and “shameful” and an assault on the freedom of the press.

Walmart and Gap partner for creation of high-end home decor brand

Walmart has teamed up with Gap to create an exclusive home goods brand. The multi-year agreement between the two retailers will help both the companies to expand their customer bases. The brand will be called Gap Home and will appear on the Walmart website on June 24. The financial terms and other aspects have not been disclosed but both companies talk of a long-term partnership. Gap and Walmart had begun discussions in December about the feasibility of partnering together and launching a brand.

Gap will debut its collection on the website with approximately 400 items. There will be some items that are made using organic cotton and some will be made with recycled materials. There will also be unique finishes and items will be available at different prices. The home decor items will be available in the following categories:

  • Bedding
  • Bath accessories
  • Decorative accessories

Gap will offer a denim styled pillow for $15.88 and a king comforter set for $64.98. Many other items will range between these two rates. Both the retailers will promote Gap Home. However, it will be distributed through Walmart. The Gap website will showcase some of the items of Gap Home but will direct buyers to the Walmart website. Customers from both the companies will get emails about the debut of this new brand.

Both the companies have lauded the deal and commented on it.

Mark Breitbard, CEO of Global Operations at Gap, said that the deal gives the company a more predictable revenue stream. It also places the brand in front of new customers, who may have never shopped in its stores, in the past.

He added that it felt like it could be a “super interesting partnership” for them and that how the conversation began. It gained steam and two strong American brands were now working together.

Anthony Soohoo, who is Walmart’s executive vice president for home, said that customers would see many denim and chambray inspired collections. He also said that the giant retailer’s relationship with Gap was one that they wanted to build upon. He said that the relationship was “enduring” for the retailer and that the recent launch of Gap Home was “not a capsule collection.”

Biden’s Budget to Raise Annual Spending to $6 Trillion

On Friday, President Joe Biden is set to reveal the budget for the coming fiscal year. The New York Times has reported that it would increase spending to $6 trillion and the annual deficits will cross $1.3 trillion over the next decade. The budget will be comprehensive in outlining all the plans that have already been released. It aims to boost the middle and lower class. It provides huge spending proposals for infrastructure, health, education, transportation, climate change and more. It also said that this would be the highest federal spending since World War II.

The Republicans have already started commenting and objecting to the budget even before it has been released.

Almost all presidential budgets have been aspirational. Currently the Democrats hold narrow margins in the House and the Senate. The budget might currently be a proposal that would have to be trimmed down to get bipartisan support though it could perhaps be passed through a filibuster.

The administration says that there would be no rapid inflation unlike the predictions of some Wall Street pundits and says that it would not rise above 2.3 percent per year. It also predicts that the labor market, which was down mainly due to the economic impact of the pandemic, will rebound and will stay at about 4.1 percent by the following year and remain below 4 percent in the coming decade.

When asked for comments on the report by the Times, there was no response from   a spokesman for the Office of Management and Budget. However, White House press secretary Jen Psaki defended the size of the budget but did not confirm the $6 trillion figure.

After the budget is delivered there will be a lot of activity in Congress as it begins voting on the 12 annual spending bills that are required to keep the government open after October 1, which is when the new fiscal year will begin. None of these bills have received bipartisan support, as yet.

The government plans to release the green book. It will detail all the spending, proposals and other related matters. However, it could create more conflict between the Democrats and Republicans. This was not released when Trump was the president.

Although President Biden has always looked for bipartisan support, the Democrats could use the budget reconciliation process to pass the budget. The 2022 midterms are drawing close, and the Democrats are looking to keep their lead and the Republicans are looking to get back control of Congress. Bipartisanship to pass the budget is a lofty goal. Whether it will be reachable after the hundreds of pages of the budget proposal will be unveiled by President Joe Biden, on Friday, remains to be seen.

Jeff Bezos to step down officially from his role as CEO of Amazon on July 5

Jeff Bezos current CEO of Amazon.com will hand over the position of CEO to Andy Jassy, who runs the Amazon Web Services division. Bezos has spent three decades leading and running the Internet behemoth that gave him one of the wealthiest people in the entire world.

Exactly of the leadership change has not yet been released but it should be within the next couple of months.

Amazon is betting on the future of its cloud services. “I’m very excited to move into the executive chair role, where I’ll focus my energies and attention on new products and early initiatives,” Bezos said Wednesday. In February, he said he was looking forward to having more time to work on his ventures outside the company, such as the Bezos Earth Fund and Blue Origin. “He has the highest of high standards and I guarantee Andy will never let the universe make us typical,” Bezos said. “He has the energy needed to keep alive in us what has made us special.”

When Jassy leaves the top post at AWS to run Amazon, he will be replaced by Tableau CEO Adam Selipsky, the company said in March,  as reported by CNN.

Jassy will oversee some of the most complex businesses, in particular the new purchase that Amazon made buying MGM for $8.5 billion.

Bezos has been widely scrutinized for antitrust concerns and this was discussed during the shareholder meeting. also discuss were the mistreatment of Amazon warehouse workers regarding the union drive at one of the warehouses this past spring which failed because of pushback from Amazon. While it was struck down during the shareholder meeting,  the board wanted to have an hourly fulfillment associate serve on the company’s board. “I’d say we face intense competition from well-established companies everywhere we do business, in every industry,” Bezos said. Retail is a very healthy industry and it’s far from a winner-take-all situation.”
