VP Harris invites staff to party at Naval Observatory after complaints of staff being treated badly arise

0

On Thursday night, Vice President Kamala Harris invited her staff to a party at her official residence at the Naval Observatory. It was a post-Fourth of July celebration barbecue. The party was hosted after allegations that her staff were “treated like s**t” were made by them according to an interview conducted and published by POLITICO late June.

However, on Thursday, it was all smiles and fun as staffers feasted on burgers, drinks, and some other standard barbecue items. The event was held indoors as it was raining in DC. The tables had simple tablecloths with red checks.

This is not the first party hosted by Harris at her official residence. In mid-June, she held a dinner party for women in the Senate. Many women from the GOP had attended the get together. When President Biden was the vice president he had also held events and get togethers including a summer beach party which was hosted for journalists.

Symone Sanders, a senior advisor, and chief spokesperson of the vice president tweeted about the burgers. She said that the food served at Harris’ residence was good and the people were amazing.

Earlier, when the story against the Vice President and her Chief of Staff Tina Flournoy had been published, Sanders had defended both of them in the same POLITICO story against claims made by anonymous staff of their team.

She had told the agency that Flournoy believed in an “open door policy.” She also mentioned that black women like her would have not be able to work in politics, but for Tina.

She also called those who spoke anonymously and behind blind quotes –cowards. She said that anyone who had an issue to raise should do so “directly.” Flournoy was also at the party and was a part of the group photo.

A $1,500 bonus pandemic bonus for eligible Microsoft employees

According to an internal memo seen by The Verge, Microsoft will be giving eligible employees a pandemic bonus of $1,500. The software giant noted that the one-time bonus was made to recognize the unique and challenging fiscal year that was completed by the tech giant. The gift would be made to Microsoft parent employees but not to the separate companies it owns.

On Thursday, Kathleen Hogan, who is the chief people officer in the company, announced that the gift would be made to all eligible employees in the U.S. as well as globally. Staff whose positions are below corporate vice president level will be eligible for the bonus. They should have started working with Microsoft on or before March 31, 2021. Part time workers as well as workers who are paid hourly rates are also eligible.

The Verge also said that employees of separate companies under parent Microsoft including LinkedIn, GitHub and ZeniMax were not included in the bonus payout. Microsoft will be paying about $200 million to approximately 130,000 employees and this translates roughly into profits earned by the company in two days.

Microsoft has earned $160 billion in revenue since the beginning of the pandemic. Many businesses joined its cloud services which showed huge profits. Laptop sales and the usage of its flagship software Windows increased tremendously as the work-from-home model was adopted by billions worldwide. It also saw robust sales of Xbox as gaming became more popular than usual during lockdowns.

Microsoft also said that it has donated over $98 million to non-profits in Washington States. Its headquarters are in Redmond, Washington. The company said that an additional $60 million will also be disbursed by July.

Many other companies have given small or large bonuses, allowances to buy furniture and equipment to set up a home office and more. Some of them include:

  • Amazon
  • Walmart
  • The Verge – $1000
  • Facebook – $1000 each for its employees
  • BT – approximately $2

Madonna and Britney Spears worked together in the 2003 collaboration of Me Against the Music. In the same year they had performed at the MTV Video Music Awards. It was an eventful performance as Madonna and Spears had kissed in public and then Madonna and Christina Aguilera had also kissed, creating headlines globally. They had performed Madonna’s popular track Like a Virgin.

Several stars have come out in support of Britney Spears after she dropped a bombshell about how she has been treated during her conservatorship. She had called it “abusive.” She had asked Judge Penny to end it.

Her court appointed lawyer, Sam Ingham, The Bessemer Trust, a private trust which was supposed to look after her financial affairs and her longtime manager have already resigned, unlike James Jamie Spears, her father who’s trying to stick on to the conservatorship like Teflon. Britney has been under the constant conservatorship of her father whom she doesn’t trust from almost thirteen years. She had had no control over any aspect of her life.

Earlier Christina Aguilera had also posted a throwback photo of her and Britney when they had worked together as child artistes on the Disney show Mickey Mouse Club.  Some of the other celebrities who offered Britney Spears support are Paris Hilton, Cher, Miley Cyrus and Mariah Carey.

Two Americans arrested for Haitian president assassination say they were just translators

0

Seventeen suspects have been arrested by Haitian authorities after the violent and daring assassination of Jovenel Moise, who was the president of Haiti. The killing occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday when the late president and the First Lady were at their residence in Port-au-Prince. Two of the suspects have been identified as having dual citizenship of America and Haiti. They have been identified as Joseph Vincent and James Solages.

On Friday, a Haitian judge spoke to the New York Times. He said that the Americans were not in the room when the late president was killed. Clement Noel, one of the judges who is a part of the investigation, interviewed both of them after they were arrested. He said that they were translators for the hit squad and were not injured in the assault.

He also provided further details which mentioned that the plot was in the making from a month and the team used to meet at an upscale hotel in Petionville, which is a suburban area in Port-au-Prince. He also said that the squad had sent a message that their aim was to bring President Moise to the national palace and not to kill him.

The judge said that it was Mr. Solages who shouted that they were U.S. DEA agents on the speaker but also mentioned that his replies were evasive. Solages said that he had been in Haiti for a month and found the job to translate for the hit squad, online. Records show that he lived in Broward County, Florida. He said that he was the president of a small charity Jacmel First. State corporation records report that he owned a maintenance company.

Mr. Vincent told the judge that he was staying with a cousin in Haiti from three months. He also said that someone called Mike, who spoke both Spanish and English was the main plotter. Neither of the two suspects would mention amount they were paid. Most of the others in the hit squad who were killed or arrested were Colombians, who had retired from the military.

LA County Police seize $1 billion in marijuana, agree that it’s a fraction of the illegal trade

0

On Wednesday authorities said that they had conducted the largest seizure of marijuana in the history of busts in Los Angeles County. However, they also acknowledged the fact that it is a small fraction of the illicit growth of the plants in the county. Although marijuana has been legalized, a huge illegal market, controlled by Armenian, Mexican and Asian gangs flourishes and it has thrived through the pandemic.

Law enforcement hauled in 375,000 plants and 16 tons of the processed drug with a street value of $1 billion. They also seized a cache of weapons and vehicles including water trucks. Drug cartels have used these vehicles to steal about two to three million gallons of water, amid the drought. Last month, multiple law enforcement authorities undertook a ten-day operation in Antelope Valley. They made 131 arrests of gang members belonging to Armenian, Mexican and Chinese cartels.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said that 150 illegal grows were identified in Antelope Valley and there were many more in the surrounding counties. He also said that the cartel members steal millions of gallons of water from residents and poison the ground water and streams with pesticides used in these illegal farms.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said that her office received reports that apparent cartel members had gone to other people’s properties; taking them over and threatening the lives of these residents, if they interfered with their illegal operations. She also said that this could spread throughout the Los Angeles County.

U.S. Rep. Mike Garcia said that this was not a war on the legal cannabis business in California. The leaders said in a town hall meeting that the illegal farms were in operation although California’s Prop 64 legalized and created a market for marijuana.

One of the reasons why the black market is still thriving could be the costs as marijuana is heavily taxed. Illegal growers avoid these taxes and sell it at a lower rate to consumers. The pandemic also increased demand as well as decreased policing which led to a flourish in the illegal trade.

Federal ‘surge team’ to tackle rising COVID-19 cases reaches Missouri as hospitals struggle amid rising cases

0

A federal ‘surge team’ to help states across the nation deal with a rise in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant, has arrived in Missouri. According to Lisa Cox, who is a spokesperson for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the first team member reached Springfield on Tuesday.

The CDC said that 44.9 percent of Missouri’s population is vaccinated. This is lower than the national average of 47.5 percent. Springfield is a part of Green County and the residents of the county have a low vaccination rate of 33.8 percent.

The Daily Mail analyzed data from Johns Hopkins and found that the seven-day average had increased by 20 percent. It had increased from 760 new cases per day to 915 new infections in the last two weeks. It also reported that hospitalizations had increased by 24 percent.

Last week President Joe Biden announced the formation of surge response teams. He said that they would help hot spots that have seen a surge with

  • additional testing
  • therapeutics
  • staffing
  • expertise

He said that these dedicated teams would work with communities that are at a higher risk or have already faced surges due to low vaccination rates and the spread of the Delta variant.

Data that was updated on Tuesday evening indicate that 51.7 percent of the new cases of COVID-19 nationwide were due to B.1.617.2 also called the Delta variant which was first isolated in India. It has been isolated in all the 50 states of the nation. More than 80 percent of the new cases in the Midwestern States – Iowa, Kansas and Missouri are due to the Delta variant.

Health experts believe that the number of cases will increase and there will be more localized infections in pockets of states unless more Americans get vaccinated as it spreads more easily among the unvaccinated.

Dr. Stuart Jones, a professor of medicine told the Daily Mail that vaccinations were keeping their (U.S.) rates lower but if the message about increasing the vaccination rate does not reach the people, the nation was “heading into trouble in the fall.”

Tokyo Olympics to be held without spectators after ‘state of emergency’ declared in Tokyo, Japan

0

On Thursday, Tokyo 2020 Organizing   Committee President announced that the Tokyo Olympics will be held as scheduled from July 23 to August 8 but there would be no fans as the country is reeling from a new surge of COVID-19 cases. A short while earlier, the Japanese Government declared that strict measures to combat the virus have been reimposed in the capital.

A state of emergency has been declared, which will start coming Monday and continue till August 22. This is the fourth emergency in the country and was put in place after medical experts cautioned the government that its soft approach was leading to a spike in infections.

Some Olympic events will be held in venues outside Tokyo. No decision has been taken as yet about the presence of spectators for these events. Some of these events such as soccer, softball and baseball are scheduled to be held in regions that are not as yet under a state of emergency.

Before the pandemic there was a high demand for tickets especially among the Japanese. The Organizers were expecting to earn $800 million through ticket sales. Foreign fans had been banned but now the locals will not be able to witness the events in Tokyo, the venue for most of the events.

The spread of COVID-19 had resulted in halving the number of spectators and now the number of fans has changed from fifty percent to zero. Athletes and others will function within tight bubbles.

On Wednesday, 920 new cases were reported in Tokyo, while the number was 714 last week. Experts predict that the number of cases could rise to 1000 by the commencement of the Olympics and reach several thousands in August.

Earlier, Dr. Shigeru Omi, a top government medical adviser told reporters that the period from July to September would be Japan’s most critical times and so measures need to be in place to deal with rising COVID-19 cases.

Meat-free chicken tenders from Beyond Meat now available in U.S.

0

On Thursday, Beyond Meat said that it will launch a new version of its meat-free chicken tenders. They will be available in almost 400 restaurants across the nation. It is the first new substitute available after two years. They had discontinued the earlier version to concern on their Beyond Burger.

CEO Ethan Brown of the California based meat-free giant said that the chicken tenders were priced at a competitive rate for use across the restaurant industry. The recipe could also be scaled up and as demand increased the price of chicken tenders would decrease.

The new chicken tenders recipe was made with a combination of fava beans and peas. It has a protein content of 14 grams per serving. Peas have been a staple ingredient in sausage and beef substitutes made by Beyond though small quantities of fava beans and other proteins are also used in the formulation.

Brown also mentioned that one of the things he was interested in was to increase the protein diversity in their products. He also said that they wish to promote more meat substitutes under the poultry category.

The coronavirus pandemic affected sales of Beyond products due to the shuttering of its customers which included restaurants, universities and office buildings. Although the launch of its new version of chicken tenders has come at a time when restaurants are once again opening their doors to the public, Brown called the timing a lucky coincidence.

In the first quarter of this year, more than three fourth of its U.S. revenue was through retail sales.

However, he did not indicate when the new chicken tenders would be available in grocery stores.

In the past three months, ending April 3, the company U.S. foodservice revenue fell by 26 percent to $16.7 million. As of Wednesday, Beyond’s share price has risen by 12 percent and its market value stands at $8.65 billion.

Facebook is building its own city in Menlo Park, close to its HQ in Silicon Valley

Facebook is developing its own city with housing, offices, parks, retails stores and more – everything that is required for community living. It has partnered with the Signature Development Group for this venture. It will be called Willow Park and will be spread across 59 acres in Menlo Park, California. It will be located between Belle Haven and East Palo Alto.

In May, the building plan was updated. It will be built in the area which currently houses a single purpose industrial complex which was used as a warehouse. Facebook owns a few other buildings on the huge site.

The proposed project could include

  • 1729 apartments with approximately 320 of them as affordable housing and 120 will be senior housing
  • A 193-room hotel
  • A supermarket
  • A pharmacy
  • Cafes and restaurants

Apart from community facilities Facebook will also build 1.25 million square feet of office space for offices, meetings, and conferences.

Outdoor features include

  • A 1.5-acre town square
  • Multiple parks in about 4 acres
  • A two-acre elevated park

The proposed city is next to its Frank Gehry designed headquarters in Menlo Park. The proposal as well as its environmental impact is being considered by Menlo Park officials. The designs that have been released are futuristic on the site that once was the Menlo Science and Technology Park. Housing will also be available to non-Facebook staff.

Many tech companies have been criticized for bringing in workers by the thousands to Silicon Valley and other parts of California without providing affordable housing and other facilities.

Last year Google announced that it would be building an “Urban City” in San Jose, California. It said that the complex would contain 7.3 million square feet of office space. About 4000 homes would be built in the city within the city and a quarter of them will be affordable housing.

Now, Facebook has come forward with a proposal to build affordable as well as employee housing. Recently Facebook had offered incentives to employees who lived within 10 miles of their offices. Now it is offering them homes next to its offices.

Songbirds across the continent are dying due to a mysterious illness that blinds and creates neurological damage

0

Early May, Washington DC reported that songbirds were dying of an unknown infection that was causing crusting and swelling over their eyes. It was also causing neurological damages that made the birds exhibit wobbly movements according to a statement by Unites States Geological Survey (USGS).

Initially the illness was seen in few states, but it has now spread across the nation and songbirds have been affected in the following states:

  • Washington DC
  • Maryland
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Delaware
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Ohio
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky

Although the cause of the infection is still unclear avian experts have ruled out the following infections which generally affect these birds. These include

  • Avian influenza
  • West Nile virus
  • Salmonella
  • Chlamydia
  • Newcastle disease
  • Herpes
  • Trichomonas parasite

Initially the USGS had reported that the infection was affecting fledglings grackles and blue jays which are commonly to the mid-Atlantic region. Later many more birds’ species were added and some of the species of birds have been infected with this mysterious disease include

  1. fledgling grackles
  2. blue jays
  3. American robins
  4. northern cardinals
  5. brown-headed cowbirds
  6. sparrows

There have been hundreds of songbirds that have been affected with illness or death in the following states

  • Maryland – 325
  • Virginia – 450
  • Kentucky – 250
  • Indiana– 300

Environmental agencies, the USGS and the National Park Services are investigating the disease. They believe that birds that gather at bird baths and feeds could transmit the infection to other birds. They have asked the public to remove these feeders until the infection passes over.

Allisyn Gillet, an ornithologist at the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said that the reason why these feeders should be removed was to allow the birds to social distance naturally.

People have been asked to use disposable gloves, to put dead birds into sealable plastic bags in the trash and to inform the USGS or their local wildlife authorities.

Birds have been affected by climate change and forest fires. However, capping of pollution as a result of the Clean Air Act has also saved the lives of birds.
