T-Mobile says hackers accessed user data -possible  SSN breach of 100 million customers

T-Mobile has been hacked in a data breach and. A potential of 100 million customers. Social Security numbers. May be in jeopardy. T-Mobile is investigating allegations about a hacker who stole 106GB of data. That contains customers, Social Security numbers, addresses, drivers, license information. And full names. While the claims have been rumoring around. An underground forum. They are still being investigated to validate them.

“We have determined that unauthorized access to some T-Mobile data occurred, however we have not yet determined that there is any personal customer data involved. We are confident that the entry point used to gain access has been closed, and we are continuing our deep technical review of the situation across our systems to identify the nature of any data that was illegally accessed,” the spokesperson said.

“This investigation will take some time, but we are working with the highest degree of urgency. Until we have completed this assessment, we cannot confirm the reported number of records affected or the validity of statements made by others. We understand that customers will have questions and concerns and resolving those is critically important to us. “Reports ZDNet.

Alon Gal,  one of the co-founders of cybercrime intelligence company Hudson Rock, spoke to the hacker and wrote on Twitter that he was told about motives for the attack.

“The breach was done to retaliate against the US for the kidnapping and torture of John Erin Binns (CIA Raven-1) in Germany by CIA and Turkish intelligence agents in 2019,” the hacker allegedly told Gal. “We did it to harm US infrastructure.”

Motherboard reports it spoke to the hacker who said they stole  it from T-Mobile servers and unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers were included in the hack. Motherboard confirmed that the data was from real T-Mobile customers., as reported by ZDnet.

Target and Whole Foods stores being recalled for a  salmonella outbreak that affected nine people in four states and causing three to be  hospitalized. The shrimp sold at Whole Foods falls under the brands, Whole Food’s 365 brand and Hannaford’s Nature’s Promise.

On  August 13th it was announced, Avanti Frozen Foods Pvt. Ltd, is voluntarily expanding a prior recall issued on June 25,2021 to include certain consignments of various sizes of frozen cooked, peeled, deveined, shrimp (with some packaged with cocktail sauce) sold in various unit sizes, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The frozen shrimp products were distributed nationwide from November 2020 to May 2021.

This recall expansion has been initiated out of an abundance of precaution and will cover a large amount of product that has not been associated with any illness but been undertaken following discussions with FDA and CDC and reflects Avanti’s commitment to Public health and safety.

The CDC reopened its investigation as the  FDA requested Avanti reinvestigated its recall in June.

Indoor Vaccine Mandates Hit Cities At Restaurants, Bars and Other Indoor Facilities

0

Get vaxxed, show proof or stay home is the new mandate for cities across the US for indoor places such as restaurants and gyms. Some business owners are not having it and other ones praise it.

Business owners that don’t feel the mandate is fair because they will have a hard time verifying if people are submitting valid vaccine cards. Some of the business owners also feel that patrons coming to the restaurant without a vaccine card will start complaining and then go to another venue.

Many business owners seem to be on board with the new mandate as they say it protects their employees as well as fellow patrons. But people that have gotten the vaccine can still transmit COVID to somebody else. Getting the vaccine will help avoid serious illness and hospitalization due to what has been reported on the science with people getting the vaccine.

However, many citizens feel it is a violation of their health privacy rights in order for the government to mandate them getting a vaccine. This issue has become political, where it should only be about the health and safety of our citizens.

Many cities such as Los Angeles are now   again requiring masks be worn inside retail establishments, such as malls, hospitals and other commercial venues.

San Francisco is the first city to mandate wearing the mask at gyms and restaurants beginning August 20 and requires proof of full vaccination.

NYC is not as strict and only requires proof of at least one vaccine. The mandate will take effect September 13th in New York City.

The upcoming football Saints game introducing the NFL season will be hosted at the Caesars Superdome and more than 70,000 fans will attend. New Orleans has enacted a vaccine mandate for those that have at least received one vaccine starting this coming Monday for bars restaurants and the Superdome.

NIH scientists develop faster COVID-19 test

0

National Institutes of Health (NIH)  scientists have developed a new sample preparation method to detect SARS-CoV-2,  which is the virus that causes COVID-19.

The method bypasses extraction of the virus’ genetic RNA material, simplifying sample purification and potentially reducing test time and cost. The method is the result of a collaboration among researchers at the National Eye Institute (NEI), the NIH Clinical Center (CC), and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).

Diagnostic testing remains a crucial tool in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Standard tests for detection of SARS-CoV-2 involve amplifying viral RNA to detectable levels using a technique called quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR). But first, the RNA must be extracted from the sample. Manufacturers of RNA extraction kits have had difficulty keeping up with demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, hindering testing capacity worldwide. With new virus variants emerging, the need for better, faster tests is greater than ever.

A team led by Robert B. Hufnagel, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the NEI Medical Genetics and Ophthalmic Genomic Unit, and Bin Guan, Ph.D., a fellow at the Ophthalmic Genomics Laboratory at NEI, used a chelating agent made by the lab supply company Bio-Rad called Chelex 100 resin to preserve SARS-CoV-2 RNA in samples for detection by RT-qPCR.

“We used nasopharyngeal and saliva samples with various virion concentrations to evaluate whether they could be used for direct RNA detection,” said Guan, the lead author of a report on the technique, which published this week in iScience. “The answer was yes, with markedly high sensitivity. Also, this preparation inactivated the virus, making it safer for lab personnel to handle positive samples.”

Hufnagel’s team made their discovery by testing a variety of chemicals using synthetic and human samples to identify those that could preserve the RNA in samples with minimal degradation while allowing direct detection of the virus by RT-qPCR.

“We think this novel methodology has clear benefits of increasing sensitivity, cost and time savings for testing,” said Hufnagel, “The method stabilizes the RNA at room temperature for easier transport, storage, and handling in clinical settings.”

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) announced a 23% increase, or $1.86 million in annual nutrition assistance for American Samoa. In fiscal year 2022, which starts Oct. 1, 2021, the territory will receive $10.047 million grant for the American Samoa Nutrition Assistance Program (NAP). In fiscal year 2021, American Samoa received $8.185 million for NAP.

Through the years, Americans struggling to put food on their table have relied on USDA’s nutrition assistance programs. They are among the most far-reaching, powerful tools available to ensure that all Americans, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background, have access to healthy, affordable food.

Stacy Dean, deputy undersecretary for food, nutrition, and consumer services  reports, “To set SNAP families up for success, we need a Thrifty Food Plan that supports current dietary guidance on a budget,”. “Too many of our fellow Americans struggle to afford healthy meals. The revised plan is one step toward getting them the support they need to feed their families.”

Benefits amounted to  $121 per person before the COVID-19 pandemic, now to increase  by $36.24 per person, which will be  $157.24 monthly. Forty million Americans about  12% of the total U.S. population utilize the SNAP program.

AirPods can monitor Respiratory Rate from breath audio – Apple and Cornell University report

0

A recent research study conducted by Cornell University and reported on arxiv website as well on the Machine Learning Section page of Apple’s website reports that the tech giant can estimate the Respiratory Rate (RR) from breath audio measured by its AirPods, according to MyHealthyApple. The RR is used to measure general health and fitness. As its mega September event looms, experts and Apple aficionados wonder if this health tracking feature will be a part of its new or existing AirPods.

This is exciting news not only in terms of fitness but also for general health purposes as it will help monitor disease progression as well cardio-respiratory fitness in a cost-effective way over a period of time.

The Borg Dyspnea Scale is used to measure breathlessness. It is used to measure the clinical severity of diseases associated with respiratory disorders. Those who suffer from such conditions require an interface with a health care provider, so that their symptoms can be recognized.

Using AirPods to measure RR has simplified the process as the researchers noted that “wearable headphones” could pick up inhalations and exhalations through their microphones. The researchers said that they estimated the RR using short segments that were obtained used microphone-enabled, near-field headphones. The researchers collected data from twenty-one healthy adults before, during and after vigorous exertions.

The research has thrown up unique information on RR for fitness as well as health monitoring activities.

  • It estimated RR from a wearable device microphone under natural, ambient indoor as well as outdoor conditions.
  • It utilized a model-driven approach that can estimate RR directly from filterbank energies.
  • It introduced situational awareness through multitask learning. This allowed the model to distinguish between high and low SNR conditions

Although the study mentioned Apple AirPods, it did not specify which model was used. It also remains to be seen if next gen Apple AirPods have more sensitive near field microphones to support the tracking of RR or whether the Apple Watch would be necessary to monitor RR as this point was not clarified.

U.S. opens  formal investigation probing Autopilot problems on 765,000 Tesla vehicles

Tesla’s autopilot partially automated driving system is under investigation after a series of collisions occurred with parked emergency vehicles. The includes 765 thousand vehicles, pretty much everything Tesla sold in the United states since the Tesla model of 2014.Tesla models included, the Models Y, X, S and 3 from the  through 2021 model years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration  is looking into   the 17 people that were injured and where one was killed.  “The involved subject vehicles were all confirmed to have been engaged in either Autopilot or Traffic Aware Cruise Control during the approach to the crashes,” NHTSA said in a document opening the investigation.

NTSB has criticized Tesla for not having  system safeguards for its Autopilot feature and has criticized NHTSA’s failure to ensure the safety of Autopilot.

An incident in January 2018, in Culver City, California  was with a  crash into a parked fire truck in California.  The NTSB reported  the system’s design “permitted the driver to disengage from the driving task.”

Fully Vaccinated Flight attendant of Southwest Airlines, based in Las Vegas dies from COVID-19

0

According to family and co-workers a Las Vegas based flight attendant died from COVID-19. Maurice “Reggie” Shepperson tested positive for the coronavirus in July. A Southwest flight attendant, Marcia Hildreth, who called Reggie her best friend said that he had been fighting in a hospital from a month but didn’t survive.

His mother Dawn Shepperson told USA Today that her son was on a ventilator and had died on Tuesday and a nurse told her that the death was due to COVID-19. The 36-year-old had been fully vaccinated, used to wear masks, washed his hands, sanitized surfaces, and wiped everything down in hotel rooms according to his mother and friend.

Southwest Airlines spokesperson Brandy King confirmed that an employee based in Las Vegas had died on Tuesday but did not provide details. King said in a statement that they were heartbroken over the loss of their Southwest employee. It also stated that out of respect for the family they did not have additional information to share.

Shepperson’s mother, Dawn said that the airlines had contacted her and Hildreth said that the airlines had made arrangements for her to fly back to Vegas on Wednesday.

Shepperson worked throughout the pandemic. He never tested positive except in July. He was called a highflyer by co-workers. He worked on many flights since 2007 partly because of money and partly because he wanted to travel whenever he could. He had taken his mother along with him to Hawaii, in June. He had been with the airlines for nine years.

The Association of Flight Attendants -CWA, an organization that represents flight attendants who work at United, Frontier, Spirit, Hawaiian airlines and more said that 4000 flight attendants across the nation had contracted COVID-19 and 20 have died.

A huge majority of COVID-19 cases across the nation have been among the unvaccinated and the few breakthrough cases have been mild or asymptomatic. However, no vaccine can offer 100 percent protection, so the young man unfortunately succumbed to the virus. Some professions face more health hazards when compared with others.

Hildreth has started a GoFundme page to help with the cost of his funeral expenses.

Reddit rolls out video feed on iOS, like TikTok and other short videos

Since TikTok took the U.S. and a few other countries by storm other social media channels have been scrambling to follow suit. Instagram released Reels and Snapchat released Spotlight. TechCrunch said that Reddit launched a video button on the right side of the search bar on their app, for most of their iOS subscribers, on Friday. A simple tap on it shows a stream of videos, similar to TikTok.

The videos accessed from the Reddit site shows the person who posted the video as well as the subreddit it belongs to. Users can

  • up vote
  • down vote
  • comment on the video
  • share
  • gift an award (using Reddit’s in-app currency).

Another feature similar to TikTok allows Reddit users to swipe up and find similar subreddits to which the iOS user has subscriptions as well as those that are similar to it.

Reddit had already promoted videos for users who accessed them by tapping them when scrolling through their feeds. However, there was no promotion of videos, nor could users find similar videos or related ones. All the videos that users were able to view earlier belonged to the same reddit.

A Reddit spokesperson told TechCrunch that their goal was to build a unified video player. They had also re-envisioned their player interface to add features that allowed users to comment on content. They noted that users could discover new content as well as engage with communities.

Reddit had rolled out its first video platform in 2017 when users could upload MOV and MP4 files. In August 2019 it debuted Reddit Public Access Network (RPAN). This network allowed people livestream to select subreddits. In July 2021, Reddit expanded its video offering to include commenting, engagement, awarding and building communities.

Reddit recently acquired Dubsmash, arguably TikTok’s biggest competitor but said that it has not been involved in the current feature that has recently debuted on Reddit. However, its acquisition of the Brooklyn-via-Berlin based app which had 1 billion monthly views early this year in January, signals that it will further foray into videos.

A spokesperson also told TechCrunch that Dubsmash’s technology would be used for the development of other features in future. Reddit has about 50 million daily active visitors. The platform hosts 10,000 subreddits that are active.
