Britney Spears’ staff took away her dogs on allegations of neglect before the accusation that she struck her housekeeper

0

Britney Spears alleged violent confrontation with her housekeeper was a result of the pop star’s angry response after her dogs were taken away from her according to a report by TMZ on Friday. Sources close to the singer say that her housekeeper and dog sitter were convinced that the dogs were neglected so they took them away while the superstar believes that it was one more attempt by Jamie Spears to control her life.

Sources said that one of the dogs fell ill about two weeks ago. The dog sitter, who is also a nurse, took the sick dog as well as the other dog to the vet. After the checkup she looked after both the dogs herself as she considered Spears’ home to be an unsafe environment.

On August 10, the singing sensation called the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office close to 6 p.m. to report that the dogs had been stolen.

Page Six reported that Captain Eric Buschow said that Ms. Spears had decided not to file a report after the deputies arrived at her home and contacted the security staff. So, the deputies left. He said that they did not take a report or any official action.

Police said that they received another call from the singing sensation’s housekeeper who accused Spears of hitting her due to a conflict over a phone.

TMZ reported that sources told them that Britney had confronted her housekeeper about the issue of the missing dogs. The employee reportedly said that she was worried that they had been neglected. She showed a photo of a dog after it had vomited, as evidence to Britney.

However, Spears believed that the housekeeper had shared the photo with her father Jamie Spears whom she has accused of causing her mental distress and more. She thought that the dog sitter had   taken away the dogs as per his orders.

Britney angrily told the housekeeper never to take photos of her home and they got into an altercation. Britney said that she had just smacked the phone out of the housekeeper’s hand, but the housekeeper said that the pop star had hit her arm and so the phone fell down.

Buschow told Page Six that the housekeeper was not hurt. He said that the police considered it to be a “very minor misdemeanor battery” by Spears for which she was under investigation, and they would determine whether she would be charged for the incident.

Spears’ lawyer Matthew Rosengart told Page Six that it was a “he said, she said” with a cell phone and there was “no striking or no injury.”

Rosengart told the Associated Press that the incident had been “overblown” by sensational tabloids and that anyone could make an accusation and that it should have been closed immediately. On September 29, there will be a hearing on the issue before a Los Angeles court.

Nicole Kidman gets quarantine exemption, Hong Kong citizens vent anger on social media

Several citizens in Hong Kong are extremely angry and upset as Nicole Kidman and other film crew who have recently flown to Hong King to shoot a show called “Expats” were granted permission to skip quarantine. The show is based on a 2016 book with the same title which chronicles the glitzy life of three American women in Hong Kong. However, real life expats   as well as Hong Kongers have been extremely critical of the government decision to exempt these reel life Expats from quarantine procedures.

Many took to social media angrily commenting on the unfair exemption as these rules can be applied for senior executives but are rarely applied. Recently, HSBC chairman Mark Tucker finished three weeks of quarantine after arriving from Britain.

Many expats are unhappy that they are unable to meet loved ones and have been separated from families. A popular support group on Facebook, which has people who are quarantined in Hong Kong as members, has been filled with angst and anger at this recent exemption. Local members and residents have posted that they haven’t seen relatives overseas from almost two years and they had to follow three-week quarantine rules and got no exemptions.

Hong Kong’s tabloids have been following the 54-year old’s appearances in the city since a private jet with her and some crew reached the city on Thursday, from Australia. Hong Kong’s government did not identify Nicole Kidman by name but said that foreign overseas film personnel had been granted exemption from quarantine for “the purpose of performing designated professional work.”

The tabloids said that the actor went on a shopping spree two days after she arrived in Hong Kong. She was also seen filming in the Sai Wan district. She is an executive producer of “Expats.”

Kidman’s exemption from quarantine rules came a few days before the financial hub further tightened its rules for many countries. This disrupted travel plans of many people as the summer holidays were almost over. There are a lack of hotel rooms as well as flights available due to the new rules.

Elizabeth Quat, a pro-Beijing lawmaker, said that she had got many complaints from Hong Kong residents and had asked health officials to explain the issue on Friday.

Apple’s Return-To-Office Policy Delayed Until 2022

Apple told its employees that it will be delaying a return to office policy in 2022. The timeline has been pushed back due to the COVID-19 delta variant. Apple is urging employees to get vaccinated, and it will be letting employees know at least a month in advance when they can return to the office. No retail locations or offices will be shut down.

Originally, employees were supposed to return to the office for a three-day work schedule at the beginning of September.

Other tech giants such as Facebook and Amazon are also delaying opening their offices for employees to come back to work.

Many large companies are bringing back mass mandates and are requiring wearing masks at work due to the surge in the COVID-19 delta variant.

Apple is looking forward to having people back in the office again as it says its most creative work is developed  in offices with people collaborating together.

“Despite a smooth transition to remote working, it was not an adequate replacement for in-person collaboration,” CEO Tim Cook had said in an earlier communication to employees. Many employees were hesitant to go back to work in the office due to the pandemic and were threatening to leave the company.

Tech stocks plunge as China passes strong data privacy laws

0

On Friday, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress passed the Personal Information Protection Law. It will take effect from November 1. The state-run Xinhua News Agency said that the law prohibited the illegal collection, use, transmission, disclosure, and trade of “people’s personal information.” This law is meant to curb the growing power of tech firms especially those who have listed overseas and those who have made several acquisitions in the recent past.

After the law was passed, Chinese stocks fell by approximately two percent. Some of the major companies who saw a fall in share price included

  • JD
  • Xiaomi

Health information companies that are affiliated to Alibaba, JD and Ping An Insurance saw a larger fall of 13 percent or more. The Hong Kong Tech Index declined by over 10 percent this week.

Earlier, China had not laid down any specific law that dealt with the collection and utilization of such data. Enforcement of data privacy issues depended on different legal provisions present in different existing law.

Although all the provisions of the law have not been released, the news agency also reported that the law had clarified the rules that govern the “processing” and “provision” of personal information outside the country.

In recent months, a few Chinese companies, including Didi, which was listed in the U.S. have faced crackdown from Beijing regulators. The ride hailing app was accused of illegal collection and use of personal information. Regulatory agencies have been fining companies that list overseas of violations of the country’s laws and practices. The agencies said that the misuse of data would affect national security.

The law also encompassed stronger regulations of China’s public surveillance systems. The state broadcaster CCTV said that companies could not target individuals with marketing using personal information. Any personal information could be processed only after obtaining individual consent.

Companies who broke the law could be suspended or terminated. Companies who refused to make corrections in their current systems of operations to follow the law would face a fine that could reach a million yuan which is approximately $153,000.

Why are European leaders hesitating to take in more Afghan refugees?

0

A few days ago, the world saw heartbreaking scenes as desperate Afghans clung to planes that were taking off from Kabul airport to the U.S., as Taliban forces captured the entire country much faster that was gleaned by U.S. intelligence agencies. Now, as the crisis deepens, Europe who had helped in the invasion of Afghanistan by the U.S., is saying that it is unwilling to take in Afghan refugees except those who have helped countries in Europe.

Although the Afghans have panicked as the Taliban has made a clean sweep across the country, the European Union is also in a state of panic as leaders say that they cannot cope with an influx of political refugees.

Political exigences have also influenced the decision to minimize the number of refugees that will be allowed in both Germany and France as both the countries will be facing the electorate soon. They   have far right opponents who have already started using refugee influx as a political platform to gain access to a populist, conservative and emotional issue that could influence votes.

Many of these governments have said that they are willing to welcome Afghans who have worked with American forces or with European allies or with international aid organizations. However, the way by which these Afghans will gain entry to the host countries is still unclear.

The main worry of European countries, the U.S., Canada and other countries is that several hundreds of   thousands of ordinary Afghans will scramble to leave the country for Western shores. The countries who have already said that they will not be able to resettle the ordinary Afghan refugees who flee in hopes of finding a better future will not be welcomed by include

  • Germany
  • France
  • Austria
  • Greece
  • Switzerland
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Belgium
  • Denmark

A consensus among European countries and its allies seems to be emerging. They think that Afghan refugees should be kept in the regions neighboring Afghanistan and include countries such as Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan and possibly Turkey. However, the general refugee who is fleeing from Afghanistan is looking for a better life and livelihood and these Asian countries might not be able to offer as much as European countries.

FDA says Midwestern Pet Foods brands may be linked to over 130 pet deaths

0

In a warning to Midwestern Pet Foods, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that its pet foods may be linked to the deaths of over 130 pets across the nation. In January, the company had voluntarily recalled several batches of its foods after the federal agency had found high aflatoxins in them. These toxins can cause illness as well as fatalities. In March, the pet food giant recalled other products due to contamination by salmonella.

The FDA had inspected the company’s facilities. In a press release, Steven M. Solomon, who is the director of the Center for Veterinary Medicine, FDA said that they had found evidence that there had been significant violations in areas including “Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Foods for Animals regulation.”

The director added that inspections of Midwestern Pet Food Inc.’s manufacturing plants showed proof of violations across multiple sites. The illness or death of hundreds of pets who had eaten the brand’s dry dog food could be linked to the plant violations.

Four Midwestern sites were recently inspected as a response to the voluntary recalls made by the company in January and March.

The FDA has said that “Sportsmix” a popular Midwestern brand had high levels of aflatoxin or toxic mold. The levels were as high as 558 parts per billion, several hundred times more than the limit of 20 parts per billion. It was recalled in January.

In March, several additional brands were recalled after the FDA found that samples tested were positive for salmonella. The brands recalled included

  • Canine X
  • Earthborn Holistic
  • Meridian
  • Sportmix Wholesomes
  • Venture
  • Unrefined
  • Sportstrail
  • Pro Pac
  • Pro Pac Ultimates

The FDA sent a letter to Midwestern Pet Foods Inc. on Tuesday. It has given the company 15 days to reply with the steps taken by it to address the violations that were found by the inspection team.

Approximately 130 pet deaths and 230 illnesses among pets have been reported to the FDA up to August 9 and these “may be linked to eating brands of pet foods manufactured by Midwestern,” according to the agency.

When contacted by multiple agencies, Midwestern Foods did not respond to anyone, as yet.
