Parts of the Middle East could become uninhabitable as the region’s water resources are decreasing

0

The Middle East has always been a dry, arid, and hot region of the world. However, the water crisis seems to be increasing as water resources are diminishing. The region has never been a rainfall surplus region. It has been more of a rainfall deficit region. Now, as states in the Middle East draw more water from the ground, these ground resources are not being replenished at the same rate. A water crisis is looming ahead.

Iran’s Lake Urmia was the biggest lake in the Middle East about two decades ago. It was a tourist attraction and people used to come to swim in the lake or shuttle to its various little islets in ferries. The local economy thrived due to the lake and its environs. Now, the lake has shrunk in size. It has also become extremely salty and recent data even hints at a possibility that the lake could disappear altogether; as the water level shrinks.

According to the Department of Environmental Protection of West Azerbaijan, one of the provinces in Iran which borders the lake, Lake Urmia has shrunk from its size of 5,400 square kilometers or approximately 2,085 square miles in the nineteen nineties to its current size of 2,500 square kilometers or approximately 965 square miles. It has lost more than half its size in less than two decades.

The Middle East is beset with problems including severe drought and high temperatures. There could be a dire situation of lack of water in the region within the next few years. Factors including climate change, water mismanagement and the excessive use of water for agriculture have made ground water scarce. More water is being pumped out and insufficient rain ensures that the ground water in not replenished.

Countries such as Iran, Iraq and Jordan are using reserve ground water sources to improve self-sufficiency in food. However, this will make them water deficient. Some of the middle eastern countries use desalination plants to get fresh water from seawater but it has its own drawbacks.

As a result,  climate change winters are expected to become drier, and summer will become wetter. However, the additional rainfall may not be useful or stored as the extreme heat could evaporate the water faster and there could also be flash floods rather than normal rains which can create more havoc.

Climate change is affecting the entire world and recent reports from the United Nations have reiterated the need for all countries to do their best to tackle the rise in temperatures and make other environmental changes so that planet earth can remain habitable for a longer period of time.

Pentagon activates Civil Reserve Air Fleet: Private Airlines To Help Afghanistan Evacuation

0

As the situation worsens in Afghanistan, many countries who had a presence in the nation are working round-the-clock to safely evacuate their citizens as well as Afghans who worked for them and helped them in the past two decades. To speed up the process, the U.S. has activated the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) which allows the use of civil aircraft. This will speed up the evacuation process as Afghanistan continues to plunge into further chaos.

Although the CRAF has been activated a few times in the past it has been close to two decades since it has been activated, during the Iraq War in 2003. The civil flights will not operate in Afghanistan. The Defense Department noted that 18 aircrafts from six commercial airlines will help lift evacuees from interim stations in Europe and the Middle East including Germany, Qatar and Bahrain.

The following airlines will provide aircraft:

  1. United Airlines – 4 aircrafts
  2. American Airlines – 3 aircrafts
  3. Atlas Air – 3 aircrafts
  4. Delta Air Lines – 3 aircrafts
  5. Omni Air – 3 aircrafts
  6. Hawaiian Airlines – 2 aircrafts.

Defense Department spokesperson John Kirby said in a statement that eighteen planes would be used to bring home those American and Afghan evacuees who were already in “safe havens and interim staging bases.” He also noted that the department did not anticipate that the deployment of these commercial aircraft would have a major impact on commercial flights.

According to people who are familiar with the matter, all the U.S. airlines had volunteered aircrafts to help in the evacuation efforts, earlier this week. As of now there are 18 aircrafts that will help in the evacuation, which began on Saturday. The numbers may increase or decrease in future.

Amid the chaos in both Afghanistan and end route to Kabul airport, NBC reported on Saturday that defense officials had said that the U.S. military was exploring several ways to get evacuees from American, Afghanistan and third-country nationals, safely to Kabul airport.

No visas for 100 Afghan contract security staff who guarded Australian embassy, Kabul

0

A hundred Afghan security staff, who had guarded the Australian embassy in Kabul, received a notification from the Department of Foreign Affairs that they are not eligible for immediate evacuation, on Friday. The security guards received a standard mass rejection letter saying that they didn’t qualify under the rules and they should contact a migration lawyer.

ABC News obtained the letter sent to the security staff. The sub-contractor group of Afghan security staff got a pro-forma rejection letter by email. It stated that they were “not eligible for certification” under a visa scheme called “At Risk Afghan Employee Visa Scheme.” The letter thanked them for their application and said that Marise Payne, who is the Foreign Affairs Minister had considered them.

The agency reported that the email also stated that extra 3,000 places have been added to Australia’s program and that particular priority would be given to those minorities who are expected to face persecution as well as to those who had links to Australia.

The letter continued to inform the recipients to check their options as per the above scheme. It said that their names had been given to the Home Affairs Department, which is in charge of processing applications. It also recommended that they might contact a migration lawyer to discuss the mentioned “avenues.”

The entire group was shocked by the email. These security guards had been thoroughly vetted before joining and had guarded the Australian embassy, for a salary that was below $30 per day. They felt abandoned by the very people they had risked their lives to guard and protect for years on end.

One of the reasons for rejection under the scheme was reportedly because they were sub contract workers and were not in direct employment by the embassy. ABC News has not named the contractors to safeguard them from possible retribution.

A lawyer, who is working to help Afghans leave the country, has put forth a Federal Court challenge. Late on Sunday, a DAFT spokesperson said that the guards had been approved for visas under “another humanitarian category.” However, the advocates have said that the guards have not received any information, till the publication of this article.

Carnival Cruise Lines To Limit Bacon Served Aboard To Alternate Days

0

Despite the reopening of the nation, shortages in labor and certain food items are still prevalent. Bacon, a breakfast favorite, is in short supply. However, the pandemic is not the only cause for short supply. New humane rules for animal farms including Proposition 12 has made the possibility of inadequate supplies of bacon a reality in California as well as other markets. Many hog farms across the nation have not begun implementing the regulations as per the Farm Animal Confinement Proposition.

Cruise Lines, especially in the U.S., are known for their lavish buffets. However, Carnival Cruise Lines has taken to social media to announce a shortage of bacon in its breakfast buffet. This will impact the daily servings of bacon, which is definitely a popular item on the menu.

Carnival brand ambassador John Heald posted a video on Facebook addressing the shortage. He mentioned that suppliers who procure bacon for the cruise lines were facing limited supplies and hence the ship pantry supplies were under sourced.

Heald said that the cruise line was dealing with the problem as of now by setting up a schedule that would show when bacon would be provided to guests as a part of Carnival’s breakfast buffet.

He also said that they were going to “temporarily move to an every-other day schedule for serving bacon at their Lido buffet.” The Lido buffet is generally a mélange of dishes, is expansive in the items offered and bacon is more often than not a staple item on the daily menu.

He also asked customers not to worry if they see a sign that says that they were not serving bacon that day. He said that bacon would be back the next day, in such situations.

Late last month, the Associated Press had reported that California would be facing a bacon shortage early next year as Proposition 12 would be implemented. The agency said that California would face shortage in supplies as well as higher prices. Iowa, one of the major pork   producers would face higher costs to regain the California market in future as its hog farms are not prepared with the regulatory approvals as yet.

Local hog farms in California will be unable to supply sufficient quantities as per the demand of the state and the entire hospitality industry, supermarkets and individual customers are going to face bacon shortages as well as high prices in a few months. Cruises have already begun dealing with the shortage in bacon. What will the other consumers do? Maybe, there will be a temporary change in eating habits and meat free and pork free alternatives will become the go-to option.

Republicans Jenner and Faulconer asks conservative candidate Elder to leave California recall race

0

Two well-known Republican candidates’ reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner and former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer as well as the editorial board at the Sacramento Bee asked conservative radio host and the frontrunner among the Republicans Larry Elder to exit from the California governor recall race, as his past rude comments on women have resurfaced.

Stories from multiple agencies this week focused on Elder’s past statements. The longtime conservative host had the reputation of speaking his mind on topics including controversy laden ones. He had a long-drawn habit of passing disparaging comments on women, on their roles in life as well as on their intellect.

The Sacramento Bee, a popular newspaper in the Golden State’s capital, asked Elder to quit the recall in a long editorial, after admissions of his behavior towards women and in particular his ex-fiancée were reported by many news outlets.

On Thursday, POLITICO had reported that his former fiancée Alexandra Datig had felt threatened by Elder who had pointed a gun at her when Elder was reportedly high on marijuana. She said that although he had emotionally abused her she did not want her past to get dredged. However, she was compelled to do so as she thought that it would be “a disaster” if Larry Elder became the governor of California.

On Friday, two prominent GOP recall candidates weighed in on the issue. Caitlyn Jenner was the first to ask him to step away from the recall while calling him out for his comments against women and posted some of Elder’s comments before asking him to drop out of the race.

In a late Friday statement Faulconer commented that “Elder’s lack of judgement and character flaws” could have a negative impact on the historic recall by the GOP. He also suggested that Elder was a liability that could cost the Republicans the recall vote. However, to date Elder has refused to quit the race.

Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom, the Democratic Governor who is facing the recall vote, has made Elder the pivot of his campaign message. He is warning Californians, a majority of whom vote blue that Elder could be the next governor of the Golden State if they continue to remain apathetic and don’t vote “No” on the recall ballot.

Millions of state voters have ballots in hand. They have time till September 14 to cast their vote. Although Republican voters are a minority in the state, there is huge enthusiasm among them to vote “Yes” to recall Governor Newsom.

On the other hand, most of California’s voters lean blue and vote democrat. However, all recent polls show that there is huge apathy to vote in the recall among the Democratic voters. This is bothersome for both Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Democratic Party as a whole.

Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine might get full FDA approval by Monday

0

On Monday, the fight against COVID-19, especially the delta variant which is still spreading across the nation, might get a boost as the Food and Drug Agency (FDA) could authorize full approval for the Pfizer-NBiotech vaccine, according to the New York Times. The giant pharmaceutical has already applied for it approximately three months ago and is expected to cross the hurdle from emergency use authorization to full approval by next week.

In December 2020, the two-dose vaccine from Pfizer was the first to get emergency use authorization (EUA). Moderna was the next vaccine to get EUA approval followed by Johnson & Johnson’s single dose vaccine. Moderna has also applied for full approval by the FDA.

According to the Times, sources familiar with the matter say that regulators at the FDA are going through the necessary procedures and final negotiations with Pfizer. They are trying to grant full approval by Monday, but it may get delayed if the company does not provide the requisite paperwork required to grant total approval.

The earlier timeline was Labor Day, but the spread of the delta variant has increased the urgency of approval, so that the shots can rollout at a faster pace, sooner rather than later. The nation’s health officials and experts are eagerly awaiting this approval since the pandemic began over a year and a half ago.

A recent poll by the Kaiser Foundation showed that 30 percent among the unvaccinated said that they might get a fully approved vaccine rather than an emergency use approved one.

In case you are wondering why full approval is so important as EUA has been available since December, then some of the reasons are as follows:

  • Americans may be more convinced about the safety of the shots as full approval will reiterate its safety.
  • Companies and schools can more easily make it a mandatory requirement to get vaccinated before in-person work or classes resume, after it is fully approved.
  • Vaccine makers would aggressively market their vaccine directly and people could get private shots.

Gig worker initiative Prop 22 used by Lyft and Uber “unenforceable”, California judge rules

0

On Friday, in a major setback to gig operators who had bankrolled Prop 22 in California, an Alameda County Superior Court judge ruled against this proposition and called it “unenforceable.” The controversial proposition had been pushed by Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart and Postmates who spent more than $200 million to get it passed in California. It exempted these companies from classifying their gig workers as employees. Instead, they have been classified as independent contractors, getting lesser benefits.

Judge Frank Roesch said that the “entirety of Prop 22” was “unenforceable” as a section within the measure limited the power of a future legislature from defining app-based drivers as workers who were subject to compensation laws’ of workers. He said that this was “not severable” from the rest of the proposition.

The Alameda County Superior Court judge specifically referenced a section of the proposition that required a seven-eighth legislative majority in order to pass amendments and said that this was not in compliance with the constitution of California.

In his ruling, Roesch wrote that a prohibition on legislation that authorized collective bargaining did not promote the right to work as an independent worker, nor did it protect work flexibility, nor did it provide minimum workplace safety and pay standards for those workers.

He added that the measure appeared only to protect the economic interest of the network companies so that they could have a divided and a non-unionized workforce, which was “not a stated goal of the legislation.”

In a statement, the group of companies that supported gig economy and had spent huge amounts to Prop 22 said that they would appeal the decision.

In a statement Bob Schoonover, president of Service Employees International Union’s (SEIU) California State Council hailed the judge’s decision. He said that the ruling showed that Prop 22 was “unconstitutional” and therefore it was “unenforceable.”

In simple words, Prop 22 allowed companies to treat drivers as independent contractors and give them some concessions but not all the benefits and protection these workers would have got, as per California’s laws, if the measure had not been passed.

Angelina Jolie shares a letter from a teenage Afghani girl in her first post on Instagram

0

On Friday, Oscar winning star Angelina Jolie posted for the first time on Instagram. She shared a letter that she had received from a teenage Afghani girl. She captioned her post saying that the people of Afghanistan were currently losing their ability to communicate on social media and that they were also losing freedom of expression. She got a million followers very quickly and her first post got 25,000 within an hour of posting.

The Maleficent star said that she had joined Instagram to share stories of the Afghans as well of people all over the world who were fighting for basic rights. The 46-year-old, fiercely private actress, who has not been on social media before, was moved by the plight of the young teenager and joined social media to spread such stories by using social media platforms.

The young girl’s name had been redacted for fear of retaliation. She said that she was afraid that the Taliban would not allow her to go to school and said that they were “all imprisoned again.” When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan almost two decades ago, they had taken away basic of rights of women including education.

Jolie, who had been to Afghanistan in a humanitarian mission a few weeks before 9/11, had previously met refugees who were escaping the Taliban. Once again, there are hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees who wish to leave but have few sanctuaries and Jolie appealed to the global, regional and local powers to “provide urgent humanitarian aid and protect refugees and civilians.”

The Eternals actress said that it was sickening to watch Afghans being displaced, once again, as “fear and uncertainty” gripped Afghanistan. She also said that it was almost impossible to understand that it was a failure after so much of time, money, blood had been shed and lives had been lost to the Afghan cause.

The Academy Award actress ended her post saying that she would not turn away, like others who were committed and would continue to look for ways to help and she told her followers that she hoped that they would join her in her quest.

Will Bitcoin and other crypto currency face tougher rules in future?

The Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency ballooned during the pandemic. It saw wild fluctuations and huge market volatility. Despite all the ups and downs the main crypto asset Bitcoin has stayed at more than $20,000 per coin more often than not and climbed much higher as well. There were times when the cryptocurrency saw a 300 percent increase in value.

Recently, hackers have demanded payment in Bitcoin as they added ransomware to infrastructure, travel and food companies crippling their online operations for days on end. The hackers asked for payment in Bitcoin as this unregulated asset is easily transferable, yet difficult to trace. However, things are going to change as Gary Gensler, the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken a closer look at regulating cryptocurrencies.

Gary Gensler is an experienced regulator who has worked both on Capitol Hill as well as in the Treasury Department. His prior job was as a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He focused on

  • blockchain technology
  • digital currencies
  • financial technology
  • public policy.

NPR reported that Gensler said that investors weren’t getting enough information to “judge the risk” and “understand the risk” of cryptocurrencies. He has asked Congress

  • to give regulators authority so that they could write new rules.
  • to give them sufficient resources as money and manpower to regulate cryptocurrencies.

Gensler has not mentioned specific details about how the SEC will look at the crypto asset. However, he has mentioned the need for “guardrails.” These can be considered actions that will help protect individual investors who invest in these assets.

Professional investors say that they welcome a formal framework of rules but also say that these rules should not be too stringent. Earlier, the Senate had put in a provision to strengthen tax enforcement on cryptocurrencies, but lobbyists are at work trying to overturn these rules.

Cryptocurrencies were developed as assets that would be untethered by governments. However, it is a lofty concept to think that it is possible to continue to let these assets be unrestricted or unregulated, considering the fact that they are extremely prone to be used illegally. Earlier untethered assets like gambling and marijuana, also went down illegal paths yet both of them are getting regulations from states across the nation, decreasing if not eliminating their illegal and unregulated aspects.
