As mild Covid symptoms persist, Queen cancels virtual engagements

0

On Sunday, Buckingham Palace had announced that the Queen had caught Covid but her symptoms were mild. On Tuesday, they announced that the Queen has canceled the virtual engagements that had been planned for the day and that she would continue with light duties.

The palace said that “Her Majesty” was still “experiencing mild cold-like symptoms” on Tuesday so she would not attend to the “planned virtual engagements” and that she would continue with light duties. The Queen’s light duties include reading and replying to documents and letters. She receives a huge amount of them every day in classic red dispatch boxes.

There has been concern from a while about the Queen’s health as son Prince Charles caught a second Covid infection on February 10 and had been in close contact with his mother. His wife, her daughter-in-law Camilla, had also caught Covid, a few days later.

On Sunday, though the Queen was also infected, she continued with her duties on Monday. She sent her condolences to the people of Brazil, who suffered from floods. A Palace source also said that there were a team of people in Windsor Castle, who seem to be infected by Covid.

The Queen is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this year. She reached the 70th year of her reign on February 6, 2022. Grand celebrations throughout the year have been planned with more public ones in summer in June 2022.

A Palace source said that as of now there was no decision taken about the Queen’s participation in a number of engagements in March. A firm decision would be taken as the dates came closer.

The scheduled events in March include the following:

March 2– a diplomatic reception at Windsor Castle.
March 14– the annual Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.
March 29– a Thanksgiving service for Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey.

Here’s wishing the Queen Good Health–Bonne Sante and a wonderful jubilee year.

Boris Johnson Goes To War With Russian Oligarchs and Banks

0

According to Johnson, the sanctioned banks are Rossiya, IS Bank, General Bank, Promsvyazbank, and the Black Sea Bank. Gennady Timchenko, Igor Rotenberg, and Boris Rotenberg are the three individuals whose assets they have in the UK will be frozen; they will be barred from entering the country, and all UK individuals and organizations will be prohibited from engaging with them, said Johnson.

Following a pre-dawn Cobra meeting on Tuesday, the Prime Minister stated that Putin has “completely torn up international law” by recognizing separatist areas and now must face an “immediate” response.

Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recognition of two breakaway territories of east Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk, Prime Minister Johnson revealed that Britain would penalize five Russian banks and three high-net-worth individuals.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced penalties on five Russian banks and three of Vladimir Putin’s ‘cronies’ in response to the invasion of Ukraine, Daily Mail reported.

Appreciating German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his bold decision to pull the plug on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and declining to send weapons to Kiev, Johnson said backs the stoppage of the Champions League football finals to take place later this year.

Chancellor Scholz has taken steps to halt the process of certifying Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The decision represents a significant step forward for the German government, which had long resisted cancelling the project despite pressure from some European countries and the United States.

For years, Washington has argued that building another pipeline bringing Russian natural gas to Germany increases Europe’s reliance on Russian energy supplies.

Many British legislators demanded that Johnson be harder on Russian money, including requesting that Russian oligarchs be expelled from the country and Russian money be dug out of London’s City.

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, hundreds of billions of pounds have flooded into London and Britain’s overseas territories from Russia, and London has become the city of choice for the super-rich of Russia and other former Soviet republics.

If a full-scale invasion occurs, the larger package, which is being coordinated with Washington and the EU, will be implemented.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the announcements seem to have had no effect on any major oligarchs based in the United Kingdom. Labour has urged Johnson to go further, claiming that a threshold had been crossed and demanding the imposition of a full package of measures right away so Putin did not believe the benefits outweighed the costs.

Johnson accused Putin of deliberately plotting the destruction of a 44-million-person nation using absurd and mystical justifications. He said that Putin, in his speech, had denied that Ukraine had any genuine statehood tradition, had claimed a direct threat to Russian security, and made other false accusations and aspersions.

And in the meantime, Russian tanks and armored personnel carriers, as many 10,000 Russian troops, had been “seen” in the breakaway regions, reports said. The PM’s official spokesman has reportedly stated that President Putin has sent troops in, violated international law, and reneged on the Minsk agreement.

According to a Guardian analysis of payments to governments disclosures, London-listed Russian oil, gas, and mining companies paid their government £39 billion in taxes in 2020. Revenue from such businesses is extremely important to the Putin regime: Russia spent £41.7 billion on its military in 2019, accounting for 11.4 percent of total government spending, according to the World Bank’s most recent figures.

How will AT&T shutting down its 3G Network on February 22 affect your devices

0

In 2002, the 3G network was considered to be a big deal as it had a huge impact on network speeds, apps as well as telecommunications in general. Now, in 2022, the time has come for a 5G Network to be deployed across most if not all parts of the nation. On Tuesday, AT & T announced that it is officially phasing out the 3G network. Other telecom companies will do also do so by the end of the year.

Although most consumers might already be using 4G and 5G phones there still could be some apps and devices that will be impacted as the 3G network goes defunct. It is easy to check a phone and confirm that it runs on a 4G network but other devices may not be so easy to check.

Some of the devices that could be impacted include the following:

3G Kindle
3G Flip phone
iPhone 5
Certain home alarm systems
Certain medical devices
Android phone models
OnStar roadside assistance systems.

Since the phasing out of the network has been in the works from a while, most upgrades might have taken place already. General Motors reportedly began sending upgrades right from 2015. Alternatively, upgrades have been offered for cars with 3G technology. Another way of managing to use the soon to be defunct system is to use an adapter with a modem that can be plugged into the vehicle.

T-Mobile is planning to shut its 3G network by the third quarter of the year while Verizon will shut its 3G network operations by December 2022.

One of the major advantages after shutting the network for all the major telecom operators in the nation is that it can stop concentrating on what has now become a minuscule operating network. Verizon has already reported that 99 percent of its customers have upgraded to 4G LTE while AT&T told CNN Business that less than one percent of its mobile traffic used 3G networks. T-Mobile did not respond when asked about its 3G user base.

Walmart launches inaugural collection of Brandon Maxwell spring collection under two brands

0

On Tuesday, Walmart is debuting its spring collection under two different brands. The two exclusive brands called Free Assembly and Scoop have been designed by Brandon Maxwell. He is a famous designer who has dressed the likes of Michele Obama, Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey and more. He is also a judge on Bravo’s Project Runway.

Walmart hired the talented designer last year in its quest to add style to customers’ purchases away from the mundane such as socks, T-shirts and basic apparel.

Denise Incandela, executive vice president of apparel and private brands for the retailer in the U.S. said that the designer had the same values that Walmart had, which was to create a beautiful assortment of clothes that would offer exceptional value. Earlier, Maxwell had said that he had grown up shopping at Walmart.

The Free Assembly collection will have almost 500 pieces of apparel for men, women and children. It will be available in 1,000 stores across the nation. The prices will range from $8 to $48. The collection emphasizes on “stripes.”

The Scoop collection is exclusively for women. There will be totally 56 pieces of designer wear including denim skirts and shoes. It will be available across 500 Walmart stores. The price range will be from $18 to $75. It will feature colors that are bold and vibrant.

Maxwell said that he hoped that people would feel the quality which was something the big box retailer was proud of. He added that clothing was an “intimate experience” and was about how it made one feel. He has designed a colorful catalog and will also be designing the summer collection for the labels.

On last week’s earnings call Doug McMillon, CEO of Walmart, called out apparel sales as a strong category during the holiday quarter. The company is developing its fashion niche, although groceries continue to account for over 60 percent of its business.

Ivermectin Usage Does Not Help in Severe Covid-19 Prevention

0

In the United States, certain ivermectin animal formulations, such as pour-on, injectable, paste, and “drench,” are allowed to treat or prevent parasites in animals. However, the FDA has not authorized or approved ivermectin for use in preventing or treating COVID-19 in humans or animals.

Antiparasitic Ivermectin, a medication for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 in humans, appears to be gaining popularity.

Given the high number of people who have died as a result of the disease, it is not unexpected that some people are turning to treatments that have not been approved or authorized by the FDA (FDA). Ivermectin is one such drug.

Ivermectin  does not  prevent severe disease from Covid-19 any more effectively than symptom management and close observation by medical professionals, according to a study published Friday is no more effective than symptom care and attentive medical supervision in preventing severe Covid-19 disease, CNN reported.

Between May 31 and October 25, 2021, an open-label trial was conducted in Malaysia at 20 public hospitals and a COVID-19 quarantine center. Dr. Steven Chee Loon Lim, MRCP, of the Department of Medicine at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Perak, Malaysia, led the team.

Nearly 500 participants aged 50 and more participated in the open-label trial; all of whom were at risk of severe Covid-19 due to their age and underlying condition. The patients were given treatment across 20 public hospitals and a quarantine center.

Half of the patients were given a rather high dose of oral ivermectin for five days, while the other half were given treatment for their symptoms, such as fever-reducing drugs. All of them were being watched for signs of disease development.

According to a report by Medscape, the primary analysis housed 490 patients. Among them, 21.6% were from the ivermectin group and 17.3% from the control group progressed to severe disease (relative risk [RR]). Participants (average age 62.5, 54.5 percent female) were randomized to receive a 5-day course of oral ivermectin, plus standard of care or standard of care alone. Symptomatic therapy and early deterioration surveillance were standard of care, based on clinical findings, laboratory testing, and chest imaging.

Mechanical ventilation rates, ICU admissions, 28-day in-hospital mortality, and side effects were among the secondary outcomes. In addition to the fact that ivermectin did not function, individuals who took it experienced greater negative effects, and some of these side effects were serious, such as heart attacks, anemias, and diarrhea that resulted in shock.

The fact that ivermectin had a greater rate of side effects in our study raises concerns regarding its broad use outside of clinical trials, said Dr. Lim to CNN in an email.

The infectious-disease specialist also stated that the public should be aware that ivermectin’s well-publicized safety profile is linked to its usage as an anti-parasitic medicine.

Two earlier randomized-controlled studies of ivermectin for Covid-19, conducted in Argentina and Colombia, had no meaningful effect on symptoms or hospitalization rates, prompting the World Health Organization to recommend that ivermectin be used solely in clinical trials to treat Covid-19.

Dustin Johnson latest golfer to dismiss appearance in possible Trump-Saudi Golf League

0

An alternate league called the “Super Golf League” has faced another rejection by a top golfer as Dustin Johnson, who is ranked No. 6 in the world, officially announced that he was fully committed to the PGA. This is the last stroke from the top golf players as there was speculation that he might join as he had remained silent on the issue, so far.

Earlier, top golfers around the world including players such as John Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka had also said that they had rejected the league. In a statement on Sunday, Johnson said, “I am fully committed to the PGA Tour.” This put aside earlier speculation and added one more blow to the not as yet formed so called super league.

The Super Golf League is funded by former No. 1 British golfer Greg Norman along with LIV Investments, a Saudi government backed company. It has been trying to lure away top golfers from the PGA Tour with huge cash incentives but has been unsuccessful. After Johnson’s statement, it is confirmed that all the top eight players in the world have officially committed to the PGA.

On Saturday, The Washington Post released a story that said that LIV Investments was in talks with Donald Trump, to use his golf courses for the newly formed league, including its New Jersey and Florida golf courses. They said that they had received the information from multiple sources who wished to remain anonymous.

It might be recalled that The WaPo journalist Adnan Kashoggi was brutally murdered reportedly by the Saudi regime who denied it and so did the former president Trump. Amnesty called the investment of the Middle Eastern regime in sports a type of “whitewashing.”

When asked for comment by multiple outlets neither LIV, nor Norman nor Trump representatives have responded.

After the January 6 riot in the Capitol in 2021, the PGA canceled its agreement of holding the 2022 PGA Championships at the Bedminister golf course in New Jersey, which is owned by Donald Trump. The Royal & Ancient also said that they would not consider any Trump golf course for future British Opens.

Tom Holland’s Unchartered American box office numbers exceed expectations

0

Whether he wears a Spider Man suit or not, Tom Holland has shown that he can carry a movie to the top of the box office. His latest action adventure “Unchartered” is expected to gross more that $51 million in its long opening day weekend, which is Presidents’ Day weekend. On Friday, Sony Pictures said that the movie would gross about $44.2 million Friday to Sunday.

This opening puts “Unchartered” at the No. 1 position for the week. There is finally some positive anticipation after another of Holland’s movie Spider-Man: No Way Home had one of the biggest opening weekend, some time back. Another new opener “Dog” has also done modestly and is at the No. 2 position. The industry is heaving a sense of relief as the final toll of the pandemic finally seems to be receding.

Josh Greenstein, the President of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group said that the result reinforced what Sony bet on which is that audiences have an “appetite for the theatrical experience.”

“Uncharted” stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg along with Antonio Banderas and Sophia Ali. It is directed by Ruben Fleischer. It is based on a game that is popular on Sony PlayStation and there was some uncertainty whether audiences would go the theaters to see the film. However, it appears that they have, after the movie opened on 4,275 screens.

Paul Dergarabedian, who is a senior analyst at Comscore believes that Tom Holland is a megastar. So, it doesn’t matter whether he plays Peter Parker in “Spider-Man” franchise or Nathan Drake in “Unchartered.” He delivers a hit with his performance.

“Unchartered” has had a good start at the box office but it must be remembered that it has been a big budget film at $120 million. It has topped $100 million globally and will be released in China, in March, which could further boost sales.

Bieber postpones Las Vegas show after Covid positive result

0

Justin Bieber’s “Justice World Tour” scheduled to be held on Sunday at Las Vegas could not take place as the Canadian pop sensation has been infected by a mild case of Covid. The star was set to continue performing after he began the tour earlier in the week. The Baby singer tested positive on Saturday, according to a TMZ report. Unfortunately, this test result has temporarily cut short the tour at Vegas, on Sunday and rescheduled dates have been announced.

The T-Mobile Arena released a statement that said they unfortunately had to postpone Sunday’s show in Las Vegas as there had been positive Covid results in members of the Justice Tour family. It also said that although Justin was “hugely disappointed” the health and safety of crew members and fans was his first priority.

The statement mentioned the huge success of the San Diego, California leg of the tour where his performance began. It said that Justin would appear on June 28, 2022 in Vegas. The Sunday tickets would be valid for the rescheduled June show. Refunds, if required, would also be available at the point of purchase.

The Justice Tour had a scheduled third stop near Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday on February 22. Reports say that this part of the Justice Tour has also been postponed and will be rescheduled in late June 2022.

The 27-year old singer had scheduled the World Tour to support the launch of his fifth and sixth studio albums :Changes and Justice, the album after which the tour was named. Bieber was expected not only to tour North America but was also expected to tour the world including

Europe
Africa
Asia
South America
Oceania.

It is hoped that the recent setback that had disrupted the North America tour will not setback the dates of the rest of the world tour.
