Wolves fend off Grizzlies in thriller, 119-118

Karl-Anthony Towns responded to one of the worst performances of his postseason career with 33 points Saturday night and the Minnesota Timberwolves evened their playoff series against the visiting Memphis Grizzlies with a 119-118 victory in Game 4.

Towns hit two clinching free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining to ice the victory.

Towns, whose eight-point effort in a home loss in Game 3 equaled the second-fewest of his playoff career, rebounded with a postseason career-high in helping the seventh-seeded Timberwolves square the series at 2-2.

Unlike two nights earlier, when the Timberwolves blew a big fourth-quarter lead, they managed to hold on this time thanks to stingy defense down the stretch.

After Jarred Vanderbilt turned a D’Angelo Russell assist into a dunk for a 113-107 lead with 2:47 remaining, Minnesota scored just two more points until Anthony Edwards hit two free throws with 8.3 seconds to go.

In the meantime, the Grizzlies had four opportunities to tie or gain a late lead, but they missed two shots and a free throw before Tyus Jones missed from 3-point range with Memphis down just 115-112 with 10.5 seconds left.

The Grizzlies were forced to foul Edwards, whose two foul shots capped a 24-point night.

Dillon Brooks and Desmond Bane hit subsequent desperation 3-pointers, but Towns nailed his two foul shots to provide the Timberwolves a cushion.

Towns contributed to two difference-making areas for the Timberwolves, with 3-for-5 success on 3-pointers and 14-for-17 at the free-throw line.

Minnesota outscored the guests 54-45 on 3-pointers, making 18 of 36, and 31-19 at the foul line, getting 40 opportunities to the Grizzlies’ 25.

All five Minnesota starters scored in double figures, with Patrick Beverley (17 points), Vanderbilt (12) and Russell (10) joining Towns and Edwards. Jordan McLaughlin chipped in with 16 points off the bench, while Towns completed a double-double with a team-high 14 rebounds.

Grizzlies standout Ja Morant was held to a postseason career-low 11 points. He took just 13 shots, making four, while spending much of his night in ball-distribution mode, racking up a game-high 15 assists.

Making eight 3-pointers in 12 tries, Bane paced the Grizzlies with 34 points. Brooks added 24, Brandon Clarke 15 and Jones 13.

Minnesota held the game’s biggest lead at 52-37 with 4:47 remaining in the second quarter.

But befitting a trend in the series, Memphis countered immediately with 10 straight points, setting up a tight second half.

Lightning manhandle Predators, 6-2

Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov produced three-point games Saturday night as the Tampa Bay Lightning handled the visiting Nashville Predators in a 6-2 victory.

The Lightning captain and Kucherov each posted a goal and two assists, with Kucherov finding the net for the fifth straight game.

Victor Hedman had a marker and a helper, and Anthony Cirelli, Ross Colton and Pat Maroon tallied for the Lightning (48-22-8, 104 points). Backup goalie Brian Elliott stopped 19 shots.

By finishing its season-long five-game homestand (4-1-0) triumphantly, Tampa Bay won for the ninth time in the past 11 games (9-2-0) against the Western Conference club.

The Predators (44-29-5, 93 points) got goals from defensemen Roman Josi and Alexandre Carrier. Juuse Saros surrendered all six goals on 30 shots before being replaced early in the third period by David Rittich, who made nine saves.

In their first meeting since the Lightning’s 3-2 win in the Stadium Series match outside in Nashville on Feb. 26, Tampa Bay got into the rematch with an early lead.

With Hedman at the point, the big defenseman blasted home a tally 1:51 into the first period. His 20th goal extended the Swedish blueliner’s career high.

After Mikhail Sergachev’s steal in the neutral zone and pass to Cirelli to start a break, the speedy forward dashed in and wristed his 17th goal at 10:59 for a 2-0 lead.

Josi notched his 21st goal — extending the defenseman’s career-high to 90 points — on Nashville’s second power play, but Kucherov equalized with his 21st in the first period’s closing seconds for a 3-1 lead.

On its fourth power play, another Nashville defenseman found the net when Carrier scored his third goal by finishing a sharp pass from Philip Tomasino at 10:42.

However, Stamkos answered just as Kucherov did to regain the two-goal lead, blistering his 35th from just below the left circle at 13:58.

Early in the third, Colton and Maroon potted goals 31 seconds apart for the only tallies of the frame.

Timbers, Real Salt Lake battle to scoreless tie

0

The Portland Timbers and visiting Real Salt Lake each failed to score for a second consecutive match in a 0-0 draw on Saturday night.

Portland (2-2-5, 11 points) played to a scoreless result for a second consecutive game after also settling for a 0-0 tie at Houston last weekend. The Timbers have now surpassed their total of four ties from all of last season.

Portland outshot RSL (3-2-4, 13 points) 15 to 5 overall and 5 to 2 in efforts on target, but rarely put goalkeeper Zac MacMath in serious trouble.

Timbers midfielder Eryk Williamson made his first start since last August, when he suffered a season-ending torn ACL, and played 71 minutes.

Salt Lake was much better than their previous outing, a 6-0 loss at New York City FC that set a club record for worst margin of defeat.

MacMath finished with five relatively comfortable saves for his third shutout of the season and first since a 1-0 home win over Seattle in RSL’s second game.

His opposite number, Aljaz Ivacic, needed only two stops to keep his third clean sheet of the campaign. He did not have one at the MLS level in two previous seasons as a Timbers backup.

While the visitors spent the majority of the night defending, they had arguably the most dangerous chances of the affair.

Salt Lake’s Pablo Ruiz struck the left post in the 66th minute on a chance set up by a cross from the right and a skillful layoff from striker Bobby Wood.

Then 10 minutes later, Maikel Chang reached Ruiz’s cross to the back post but sent his first-time volley directly at Ivacic.

Portland manager Giovanni Savarese emptied his bench, sending reserve centerbacks Bill Tuiloma and Dario Zuparic into the attack as late subs to try and win aerial balls.

But little materialized. The Timbers’ best late look came through Jaroslaw Niezgoda, who fired his effort from beyond the penalty area into MacMath’s body for a comfortable stop.

Jayson Tatum, Celtics take 3-0 series lead over Nets

Jayson Tatum scored 39 points as the Boston Celtics led most of the way and beat the Brooklyn Nets 109-103 on Saturday night in New York to open a commanding three-games-to-none lead in their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Tatum made 13 of 29 shots for his second 30-plus-point game of the series, putting the second-seeded Celtics on the verge of sweeping the seventh-seeded Nets in Game 4 on Monday. Tatum, who scored 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the fourth quarter, also finished with six assists and six of Boston’s 13 steals.

Jaylen Brown added 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting as the Celtics led for the final 39:58. Marcus Smart added 14 points as the Celtics shot 50 percent for the game and heard loud “Let’s Go Celtics” chants in the final minutes.

Bruce Brown led the Nets with 26 points, but superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were held to a combined 32 points as the Nets shot 50.6 percent but also allowed 37 points off 21 turnovers.

Durant and Irving each scored 16 points. Irving made only 6 of 17 shots from the field and missed all seven of his 3-point tries.

Brooklyn remained within striking distance early in the fourth before Boston began pulling away. The Nets got the lead down to 88-84 on a 3-pointer by Blake Griffin with 7:42 remaining.

However, Tatum hit a corner 3-pointer over Durant on the next possession, and Jaylen Brown banked in a 20-footer for a 93-84 lead with 6:37 to go.

Tatum helped finish it off on consecutive possessions. He drove the lane and passed the ball out to Al Horford for an open corner 3 with 4:20 remaining, and then converted a finger roll layup for a 101-88 lead with 3:52 to go.

In the third quarter, the Nets were within 75-72 when Patty Mills hit a 3-pointer with 1:15 left, but Smart converted a putback and a transition 3-pointer, and Jaylen Brown dunked to give Boston an 81-72 lead into the fourth.

Tatum scored 12 points and hit a pair of jumpers in the final 70 seconds as the Celtics grabbed a 30-25 lead after one quarter. The Celtics built a 39-27 lead on a dunk by Robert Williams III with 8:23 left, and settled for a 53-50 edge by halftime.

Mark Kastelic scores first career goals as Senators cruise past Canadiens

Mark Kastelic scored his first two NHL goals, and got into a fight, as the Ottawa Senators used a five-goal second period to win their third in a row Saturday night, 6-4 over the visiting Montreal Canadiens.

The loss was Montreal’s eighth in a row.

Parker Kelly and Austin Watson each had a goal with an assist, Josh Norris posted his 34th goal and Anton Forsberg made 44 saves for the Senators (31-41-7, 69 points), who snapped an 0-2-1 home rut during a chippy affair that featured 15 total penalties. Playing in his 13th NHL game, Kastelic scored his milestone goal just 2:33 into the contest, then immediately got into a tussle with Montreal’s Michael Pezzetta.

Playing one night after the death of legend Guy Lafleur, who was honored with a pregame video tribute Saturday, Montreal (20-48-11, 51 points) got a pair of goals from Rem Pitlick and Cole Caulfield’s 20th. However, Carey Price stopped just 20 of 26 shots to remain winless in four 2021-22 starts as the Canadiens dropped their eighth straight in regulation for the second time in three months.

Tied 1-1 after a period, Ottawa scored 44 seconds into the second when Watson batted in Nick Holden’s shot from the blue line. Kelly put Ottawa up 3-1 via a two-on-one with 13:17 to play in the second. Just 32 seconds later, Norris scored, and 35 seconds after that, Kastelic made it 5-1.

Montreal outshot Ottawa 16-6 in the first period, and tied it at 1-1 with 4:03 left in the opening frame. Jake Evans flung the puck into the slot for Pitlick to snap a 13-game goal drought.

Caufield stopped the second-period bleeding for Montreal when he took a back-handed pass from ex-Senator Mike Hoffman to make it 5-2 with 11:17 to play in the period. According to Sportsnet, Caufield is the first Montreal rookie to record at least 20 goals since Chris Higgins in 2005-06.

Joel Edmundson’s drive with 2:43 left in the second got the Canadiens within two. But just 43 seconds later and Ottawa short-handed, Alex Formenton broke free to beat Price and put Ottawa up 6-3.

Pitlick’s second of the night came with 11:41 left in regulation.

Rapids’ winless string hits five in 0-0 tie with Charlotte FC

0

Charlotte FC notched the first road point in franchise history while the Colorado Rapids saw its winless streak reach five matches as the two teams played to a scoreless tie on Saturday night at Commerce City, Colo.

Charlotte FC (3-5-1, 10 points) had been outscored 9-2 while losing the first four away matches of their first MLS season before playing much tighter defense against the Rapids.

Colorado (2-3-3, 9 points) never placed a single shot on target as Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina notched his third shutout of the season.

Rapids goalkeeper William Yarbrough made five saves, including a major one in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.

Gyasi Zardes entered in the 60th minute to make his Colorado debut one day after being acquired from the Columbus Crew. Zardes didn’t take any shots.
Colorado is 0-2-3 during its five-game funk.

Charlotte put five shots on target and outshot the Rapids 16-11.

Yarbrough kept the Rapids from a disappointing loss when he thwarted Charlotte’s McKinze Gaines during extra time.

Benjamin Bender was near midfield when he sent a pass in the vicinity of Gaines, who beat two Colorado defenders to the ball. Gaines broke in and delivered a right-footed shot that Yarbrough stopped with his hand.

The Rapids had a chance in the fifth and final minute of second-half stoppage time but Lucas Esteves sent a hard left-footed shot over the net.

Charlotte had a couple strong chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

In the 49th minute, Charlotte had a flurry of activity as Jordy Alcivar’s right-footed shot was stopped by Yarbrough, who also made the save on Karol Swiderski’s rebound right-footer. The ball found its way to Swiderski again but he sent a left-footed shot wide to the left.

Ten minutes later, Alan Franco was set up in front of Yarbrough but lifted his right-footed shot over the net.

Colorado’s Diego Rubio hit the crossbar twice with left-footed shots in the first half. The missed opportunities occurred in the ninth and 24th minutes.

Suns seek dominant 3-1 lead vs Pelicans

The Phoenix Suns have regained homecourt advantage in their series against the New Orleans Pelicans.

They can take a commanding lead in the series if they can win again Sunday night in New Orleans.

The top-seeded Suns bounced back from a series-tying loss at home in Game 2 to beat the host Pelicans 114-111 and take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series Friday night.

They overcame the absence of leading scorer Devin Booker, who is expected to miss at least Sunday’s game because of a hamstring injury. Deandre Ayton dominated the first half and Chris Paul dominated the fourth quarter in Game 3.

“It’s a big win for us,” Paul said. “We knew it was going to be by committee. We knew coming into this arena was going to be tough. I think everybody pitched in, and we did enough to win.”

Ayton had 21 of his 28 points and seven of his 17 rebounds to help Phoenix grab a 59-48 halftime lead.

New Orleans got within two points at the end of the third quarter but couldn’t keep up with Paul in the fourth quarter. Paul, who scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to spur the Suns’ win in Game 1, had 19 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter of Game 3. He finished with 14 assists and didn’t commit a turnover.

“I just picked my spots,” Paul said. “I finally had a couple of shots go down. I just tried to be aggressive. I listened to Deandre. He kept telling me he was going to get me loose, and he told me to just stop passing and shoot the ball. Shots went down, and we got stops at the times when we needed to.”

Phoenix had a 64-40 advantage in points in the paint and the Pelicans’ inside game suffered a blow when starting forward Jaxson Hayes was ejected with 5:13 left in second quarter for committing a flagrant 2 foul against Jae Crowder.

“We’ll be fine,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said. “(It’s a) long series. We still won at their place. They came and got one at our place. Give them credit. They played hard (and) played together. We’ll regroup, watch some tape, and come back Sunday and be ready.”

Brandon Ingram scored 34 points and CJ McCollum added 30 to lead New Orleans. However, starting center Jonas Valanciunas made just 1 of 5 shots and had 11 rebounds while backup Larry Nance Jr. made 1 of 8 shots and had four rebounds.

In the first two games, Valanciunas averaged 14 points (on 11-of-30 shooting) and 19.0 rebounds, and Nance averaged 13.5 points (on 11-of-17 shooting).

“There’s a lot of emotions that go back and forth in the wins and losses, in execution and lack of execution,” McCollum said. “You’ve got to turn the page, learn from your mistakes, figure out where you can play better, but also look at all the things we’ve done well up to this point.

“Down 1-2, with a game to play at home, I’ll take that. Obviously, we’d have liked to win, but we’ve got a chance to even up the series in front of our fans at home on Sunday.”

Crew shut out again, earn point against Sporting KC

0

The Columbus Crew’s scoring woes continued but they ended a three-game losing streak with a 0-0 tie against host Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.

Columbus (2-3-3, 9 points) has not scored in the past four MLS matches, and it has three losses and two ties in the past five games.

Sporting Kansas City (2-6-1, 7 points) also earned a point for the first time in four games.

Tim Melia had one save for SKC, which is 7-1-3 vs. the Crew since the 2013 season. Eloy Room made three saves for Columbus.

The match was in the 77th minute when it went into a 47-minute weather delay.

It has been a trying stretch for the Crew. They were upset by second division Detroit City FC in the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday followed three days later by the startling trade of one of their most productive scorers in history.

U.S. national team forward Gyasi Zardes was dealt to the Colorado Rapids for general allocation money up to $1.4 million that Columbus will use this summer to acquire another designated player.

Zardes scored 54 goals in 110 games for the Crew and was part of the 2020 MLS Cup championship team. He had one goal in seven games (one start) this season.

Columbus was also without injured leading scorer Lucas Zelarayan (right knee), who had scored four and assisted on two of the team’s first 10 goals.

While SKC had 70 percent of the possession in the first half, it didn’t lead to any dangerous chances until the second minute of stoppage time.

That’s when Graham Zusi sent a free kick into the middle of the box where Khiry Shelton snapped a header that was targeted for the lower right corner of the net.

The attempt almost reached its destination but Room made a diving save, snuffing Sporting Kansas City’s only shot of the half.

Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele (-29) dominating at Zurich

0

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele fired a 60 on Saturday, setting the 54-hole tournament record and taking a five-shot lead at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in Avondale, La.

The pair sit at 29-under 187 after Saturday’s best ball and are bidding to become the event’s first team to win in wire-to-wire fashion.

Garrick Higgo and Branden Grace (63) of South Africa head into Sunday’s final round five shots back at 24-under 192. The five-stroke lead is the largest after 54 holes in tournament history.

Three teams are tied for third at 23 under, six shots back.

The tournament returns to alternate shot Sunday for the final round.

Cantlay and Schauffele caught fire on the back nine, carding birdies on every hole except one to expand their lead after two birdies and an eagle going out.

“Our plan is to basically have as many birdie looks as possible,” Schauffele said. “If you’re not really in the hole, hit it up there close to free up your partner and let your partner get a good roll at it. (Cantlay) did a really good job of that on the back nine, and it bore some good fruit.

“It’s the third quarter. We finished a really good three quarters here and we have one more to go,” Schauffele added.

Grace and Higgo posted four birdies and an eagle on the front but couldn’t keep up the pace, recording a bogey on the par-4 12th hole.

“Everything could change in one hole tomorrow,” Grace said. “You know what it’s like. We’ve played well. Obviously yesterday which was nice, so you have that confidence going into tomorrow. … But just have to kind of get off to a very solid start and then kind of play yourself into the day. You can’t get overaggressive, just try to give yourself some chances on every hole, and we’re bound to make a few.”

Sam Burns and Billy Horschel and Australians Jason Day and Jason Scrivener both posted 63s in the third round and sit T3 with Englishman Aaron Rai and American David Lipsky, who carded a 65.

Wyndham Clark and Cameron Tringale shot 65 and are alone in sixth at 22 under, seven shots back.

Austin FC extend winning streak to 3 by blanking Whitecaps

0

Maximiliano Urruti tallied two first-half goals and Sebastian Driussi added a goal and an assist as Austin FC rolled to a 3-0 home victory over the struggling Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday in a Western Conference match.

Austin (5-1-2, 17 points) has won three straight matches for the first time ever. Goalkeeper Brad Stuver and the defense recorded Austin’s third clean sheet of the season as the team extended its streak without a loss to five games.

Urruti scored the game’s first goal, working a breakaway in the 11th minute with Driussi after a turnover in the midfield and a pass from Jon Gallagher.

Driussi carried the ball deep into the zone before feeding Urruti, who blasted a shot through Whitecaps’ goalkeeper Thomas Hasal and into the net.

Austin added to the advantage in the 26th minute with Urruti scoring after an assist from Alex Ring and a pass that started the play by Daniel Pereira. Urruti, standing just outside the six-yard box, steadied the ball and took a step back before finding the bottom-left corner behind Hasal.

Driussi racked up Austin’s third goal — and his league-leading sixth of the season — by heading in a headed pass to the far post from Julio Cascante in the 68th minute after a throw in deep into the Vancouver penalty area.

Austin has won four of its five home matches this season (with one draw) and has the league’s best home record by goal differential.

Vancouver dropped its third consecutive game. The Whitecaps (1-6-1, 4 points) are yet to earn a point on the road, with five away losses in which they have been outscored 14-3. Vancouver is minus-11 in goal differential this season.
