Kaapo Kahkonen stops 27 to lead Sharks past Chicago

Timo Meier collected one goal and one assist to lead the host San Jose Sharks to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

Jasper Weatherby, Tomas Hertl and Nick Bonino also scored for the Sharks (31-35-12, 74 points), who have two wins in 13 games. Goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen made 27 saves in an outstanding performance.

Tyler Johnson replied for the equally floundering Blackhawks (26-42-11, 63 points), who have only two wins in 14 games. Goalie Kevin Lankinen stopped 15 shots in a losing effort.

Despite the Blackhawks holding the bulk of scoring chances, the Sharks staked a three-goal lead starting with Weatherby’s tally at the 6:03 mark. Sasha Chmelevski’s long shot was stopped but Scott Reedy grabbed the loose puck before sending a short pass to Weatherby as he headed to the net, and he made no mistake for his fifth goal of the season.

Hertl’s 29th of the season 58 seconds into the middle period doubled the lead. Meier stole the puck just outside his own blueline and made a cross-ice pass on the ensuing two-on-one rush that Hertl buried with a potent one-timer.

Meier then made it a 3-0 affair with his 34th of the campaign just past the midway point. He intercepted a pass and eventually converted a loose puck in the flurry that followed the scoring chance he created.

The Sharks managed three goals on eight shots.

Johnson gave the visitors life when he netted his third goal of the season with four minutes remaining in the middle frame, finishing an open chance from the slot set up by Jonathan Toews.

However, Bonino’s power-play goal 6:19 into the third period dashed Chicago’s comeback hopes. After taking a pass and working into the left circle, Bonino ripped a top-corner, short-side shot for his 13th of the season to round out the scoring.

Byron Buxton leads onslaught as Twins rout White Sox

Byron Buxton went 4-for-4 with a home run and a double and Luis Arraez had four hits and three RBIs to lead the Minnesota Twins to their third straight victory, 9-2, over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis.

Buxton also was hit by a pitch and scored three runs to go with two RBIs, while Ryan Jeffers also homered, doubled and scored three times as the Twins finished with a season-high 14 hits.

Dylan Bundy, who went just 2-9 with a 6.06 ERA in 23 games (19 starts) for the Los Angeles Angels in 2021, improved to 3-0 by scattering four hits over five shutout innings. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out four while lowering his ERA to 0.59.

Jose Abreu homered and had two RBIs for Chicago, which lost its sixth straight game. Vince Velasquez (0-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six.

The Twins loaded the bases with no outs in the first on back-to-back singles by Buxton and Arraez and a walk to Carlos Correa, but they managed just one run on a fielder’s choice by Jorge Polanco. Velasquez got out of the jam by striking out Max Kepler and Trevor Larnach.

The Twins extended the lead to 3-0 in the second when Jeffers doubled off the fence in right-center and scored on a double by Buxton. Arraez then drove in Buxton with a single.

Jeffers made it 4-0 when he led off the fourth with his first home run of the season into the second deck in left. Buxton followed one out later with his fourth homer of the season, a 407-foot drive deep into the second deck in left.

Larnach added a two-run single later in the inning off reliever Bennett Sousa to make it 7-0.

Minnesota increased its lead to 8-0 in the fifth on an RBI single by Arraez.

Abreu then cut the lead to 8-1 in the sixth with his second homer of the season.

Arraez added another RBI single in the seventh to make it 9-1, and Abreu picked up his second RBI in the eighth with a ground out, driving in Danny Mendick who had walked and advanced to third on a double by Andrew Vaughn.

White Sox left fielder Eloy Jimenez had to be carted off the field with a right hamstring injury in the second inning after landing awkwardly after crossing first base while trying to beat out a grounder to third base.

Stars rally past Kraken, snap 3-game skid

Roope Hintz scored twice as the Dallas Stars maintained playoff positioning in the Western Conference wild-card race, rallying past the visiting Seattle Kraken 3-2 Saturday night.

Vladislav Namestnikov also scored for Dallas (44-30-5, 93 points) and Joe Pavelski recorded his 500th career assist. Goaltender Jake Oettinger made 30 saves as the Stars snapped a three-game losing streak.

Riley Sheehan and Yanni Gourde scored for the Kraken (26-46-6, 58 points), who blew a two-goal, first-period lead for the second consecutive night after a 6-3 loss Friday at Minnesota. Goalie Chris Driedger stopped 28 of 31 shots.

Trailing 2-0, the Stars scored three goals in a span of 4:41 in the second period.

Hintz pulled the Stars within 2-1 at 6:53, finishing off a three-on-two break with Jason Robertson and Pavelski.

The Stars tied it on the power play at 8:58, as an entry pass into the Seattle zone deflected off Adam Larsson and fell right to Hintz, who blew past the defenseman and lifted a shot over Driedger.

Dallas took a 3-2 lead at 11:34 as Denis Gurianov stole the puck behind the Seattle net and fed a wide-open Namestnikov out front for a one-timer.

It appeared the Stars took the lead 2:48 into the first when Pavelski put the puck into an open net, but Seattle coach Dave Hakstol challenged the play and a video review determined Hintz was guilty of goalie interference, knocking Driedger out of position.

The Kraken instead took a 1-0 at 6:50 of the first, as Sheahan found a rebound of Larsson’s shot from the left point sitting just outside the crease and knocked it in.

Gourde made it 2-0 at 18:33 of the period, tipping Derrick Pouliot’s shot from the left point past Oettinger.

Seattle’s Matty Beniers had his five-game point streak snapped, one shy of the NHL record for players at the start of their career for an expansion team, shared by Wayne Gretzky.

Duke G Trevor Keels declares for draft

Duke freshman guard Trevor Keels on Saturday became the fourth Blue Devils player to declare for the upcoming NBA draft.

“Playing at Duke was a dream and I feel now is the time to chase another dream,” Keels wrote in a post on Instagram. “I am excited to enter my name in the 2022 NBA Draft. I found a second home at Duke and I’ll be riding with The Brotherhood for life.”

Keels joins Wendell Moore Jr., Paolo Banchero and Mark Williams in declaring for the draft. Guard Jeremy Roach announced Friday he would return for his junior season.

Kevin Kiermaier 2-run HR in 10th propels Rays past Red Sox

Tampa Bay’s Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Rays came from behind to defeat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Saturday night at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Kiermaier’s home run scored Taylor Walls, who reached base on a two-out throwing error by Boston second baseman Trevor Story. The error allowed Randy Arozarena to score to cut into what had been a 2-0 Boston lead. Walls then stole second before Kiermaier came to the plate and drove a ball to deep right field for his first home run of the season.

“K.K. has been here a long time and he’s done a lot of clutch things for us,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said. “K.K. really picked us up.”

The game had been scoreless through the first nine innings before Boston’s Bobby Dalbec tripled to score Jackie Bradley in the 10th inning.

Up to that point, six Tampa Bay pitchers had held Boston hitless. Matt Wisler, Tampa Bay’s seventh pitcher of the night, allowed Dalbech’s hit. Dalbech then scored Boston’s second run on a sacrifice fly by Christian Vasquez.

Wisler (1-0) was able to finish off the inning and collect the win.

The eventful final inning spoiled what had been a classic pitching duel. Tampa Bay starter J.P. Feyereisen, and relievers Javy Guerra, Jeffrey Springs, Jason Adam, Ryan Thompson, and Andrew Kittredge combined to hold the Red Sox hitless and scoreless through the first nine innings.

In the first nine innings, the Rays had been held to just two hits — a double by Brandon Lowe in the fourth inning and a single by Brett Philipps in the eighth — as the Red Sox had a strong pitching performance of their own.

Boston starter Garrett Whitlock pitched four scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out seven. Relievers Austin Davis, Kutter Crawford and Tyler Danish came on to hold the Rays to just one more hit through the first nine innings.

Boston’s Hansel Robles came on to pitch the 10th inning and that’s when the problems started for the Red Sox. Hansel (1-1) took the loss.

NHL roundup: Panthers win 13th straight game

Brandon Montour scored at 2:26 of overtime and the Florida Panthers defeated the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 Saturday night at Sunrise, Fla.

The Panthers won a franchise-record 13th consecutive game.

Flames 6, Canucks 3

Dillon Dube scored twice as host Calgary delivered a crushing blow to Vancouver’s playoff hopes.

Elias Lindholm reached the 40-goal mark for the first time in his career for the Flames. Brett Ritchie, Nikita Zadorov and Johnny Gaudreau also tallied for the Pacific Division champions, who are on a 9-1-1 roll and posted the second-best point total in franchise history. Goaltender Dan Vladar made 28 saves and Chris Tanev collected three assists.

Quinn Hughes, Conor Garland and Elias Pettersson replied for the Canucks (38-30-11, 87 points), who are six points out of a playoff spot with three games remaining. Goalie Thatcher Demko stopped 25 shots.

Blues 5, Coyotes 4 (OT)

Justin Faulk scored twice, including the overtime winner 30 seconds into overtime, as St. Louis survived blowing a three-goal lead to edge Arizona in Glendale, Ariz.

Casey Mittelstadt scored in the first, Tage Thompson and Vinnie Hinostroza scored later in the second, and Jeff Skinner added a goal in the third for the Sabres, who have won four straight. It’s their longest winning streak since a 10-game run Nov. 8-Nov. 27, 2018. Goalie Dustin Tokarski made 19 saves.

Mathew Barzal scored in the first, and Noah Dobson and Kieffer Bellows scored fewer than two minutes apart in the third to generate a late comeback attempt by the Islanders, who have lost four straight. Goalie Ilya Sorokin recorded 30 saves.

Late sub Dejan Joveljic scores lone goal as Galaxy top Nashville

0

It cost him a yellow card for excessive celebration, but no doubt Dejan Joveljic was just fine with that.

The LA Galaxy forward who was a 77th-minute substitution scored the game’s only goal in the 86th minute, putting in a ball from teammate Derrick Williams with his right foot into the bottom right corner of the net. It gave the Galaxy a 1-0 win over Nashville SC Saturday night in Carson, Calif.

After scoring, the 22-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina excitedly leaped over the sign boards on the field and into the seats behind the Nashville goal, where the arms and congratulatory cheers from Galaxy fans welcomed him.

Nashville couldn’t find a tying goal, and the Galaxy won a match it dominated with 16 shots to four for Nashville, six shots on goal to one, more than double the passes (718 to 341) and forcing Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis to make five saves.

Willis couldn’t come up with a sixth, although at long last after eight straight road matches, Nashville (3-3-2, 11 points) can finally go home to open up its new soccer stadium next weekend.

The Galaxy (5-2-1, 16 points) had a golden opportunity at a 10th-minute goal, when Samuel Grandsir’s through-ball found teammate Kevin Cabral in front of the net. But Cabral didn’t get a clean shot off and sent the ball wide despite his effort being from close range.

It was the first meeting between the two teams ever, as Nashville entered the league in 2020. The Galaxy has won consecutive home matches for the first time since last summer, although star striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has gone back-to-back games without scoring.

The Galaxy were playing their third game in a week, with a U.S. Open Cup match in the middle of the week between two MLS regular season games.

Panthers rally past Maple Leafs for 13th straight win

Brandon Montour scored at 2:26 of overtime and the Florida Panthers defeated the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 Saturday night at Sunrise, Fla.

The Panthers won a franchise-record 13th consecutive game.

Montour scored his 10th goal of the season when he poked the puck past goaltender Jack Campbell at the end of a 2-on-1 with Mason Marchment, who had two assists in the game.

Claude Giroux had a goal and two assists, and Aleksander Barkov had a goal and an assist for Florida (57-15-6, 120 points)

Mitchell Marner and Justin Holl scored for the Maple Leafs (51-21-7, 109 points). TJ Brodie added two assists for the Maple Leafs.

Both goaltenders were tested. Campbell stopped 32 shots for Toronto. Sergei Bobrovsky made 34 saves for Florida.

Auston Matthews returned to the Toronto lineup after missing three games with an undisclosed injury but was kept off the scoresheet.

The Panthers hit the post at 2:11 of the first period on a deflection of a shot by MacKenzie Weegar.

Marner scored his 35th goal of the season at 3:25 of the first period. The puck bounced to him off the end boards after Brodie dumped the puck in.

Holl scored his third goal of the season at 17:20 of the first. His shot toward the goal bounced off the stick and then the skate of Florida defenseman Radko Gudas.

Barkov scored his 39th goal of the season at 6:26 of the second period from the right circle after Campbell was forced to make a poke check on Marchment. The goal was set up when Marchment broke out from the Florida zone and split the defense in the Toronto zone.

Giroux scored his 21st of the season on a blast from above the right circle on a power play at 14:54 of the second. Jonathan Huberdeau set up the shot with a cross-ice pass. Brodie was off for hooking.

Toronto’s Michael Bunting (leg) left the game early in the first period and did not return.

NBA roundup: Jazz edge Mavericks to tie playoff series

Rudy Gobert made a key rebound and an even bigger dunk with 11 seconds remaining to boost the Utah Jazz to a series-tying 100-99 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City.

Jordan Clarkson led Utah in scoring with 25 points, Donovan Mitchell added 23 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and Gobert finished with 17 points and 15 boards in a game that nearly slipped away.

Luka Doncic, in his first action of the postseason, scored a game-high 30 points with 10 rebounds and gave Dallas a four-point lead with 39 seconds left. Mitchell cut the lead to one with a putback layup and a free throw with 31.2 seconds left after being fouled by Doncic.

The Jazz fouled Dwight Powell with 19.8 seconds remaining, and he missed both shots. Gobert then grabbed the rebound and put Utah up 100-99 with an alley-oop dunk off of a pass from Mitchell. Game 5 will be Monday in Dallas.

Raptors 110, 76ers 102

Pascal Siakam scored a playoff-career-best 34 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Toronto defeated visiting Philadelphia in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series.

Philadelphia leads the best-of-seven series 3-1. Gary Trent Jr. added 24 points for the Raptors, who extended the series to a fifth game, which will be Monday in Philadelphia. Thaddeus Young had 13 points and OG Anunoby 11 for the Raptors.

Joel Embiid, playing with a thumb injury, had 21 points and eight rebounds for Philadelphia, James Harden had 22 points and nine assists, Tobias Harris had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyrese Maxey scored 11 points.

Celtics 109, Nets 103

Jayson Tatum scored 39 points as Boston led most of the way and beat Brooklyn in New York to open a commanding three-games-to-none lead in their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Tatum made 13 of 29 shots for his second 30-plus-point game of the series, putting the second-seeded Celtics on the verge of sweeping the seventh-seeded Nets in Game 4 on Monday.

Bruce Brown led the Nets with 26 points, but superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were held to a combined 32 points as the Nets shot 50.6 percent but also allowed 37 points off 21 turnovers.

Timberwolves 119, Grizzlies 118

Karl-Anthony Towns responded to one of the worst performances of his postseason career with 33 points and Minnesota evened its playoff series against visiting Memphis with a Game 4 victory in Minneapolis.

Towns, whose eight-point effort in a home loss in Game 3 equaled the second-fewest of his playoff career, rebounded with a postseason career-high in helping the seventh-seeded Timberwolves square the series at 2-2. Game 5 will be Tuesday in Memphis.

Anthony Edwards added 24 points and Patrick Beverley 17 for the Wolves. Desmond Bane scored 34 points to lead Memphis, Dillon Brooks netted 24, and Ja Morant collected 11 points and 15 assists.

Cristian Espinoza’s late goal caps hat trick at Quakes beats Sounders

0

Cristian Espinoza capped a hat trick with a penalty kick in second-half stoppage time as the San Jose Earthquakes rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the visiting Seattle Sounders 4-3 Saturday night.

Jackson Yueill also scored for the Earthquakes (1-4-3, six points), who earned their first victory of the season in interim coach Alex Covelo’s MLS debut.

The Earthquakes, who dismissed coach Matias Almeyda on Monday, also snapped an eight-game winless streak (0-4-4) to the Sounders at home.

Nicolas Lodeiro had a goal and two assists for the Sounders (2-4-1, seven points). Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris also tallied.

The winner came after a video review determined Seattle defender Nouhou pushed Francisco Calvo to the ground during a corner kick. Espinoza put the penalty kick into the upper right corner of the net.

Trailing 3-1 midway through the second half, the Earthquakes tied it with two goals in less than a minute.

Espinoza scored his second of the game in the 64th minute on a shot from outside the 18-yard box on the right wing that somehow skipped over Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei’s shoulder at the near post.

Just after the ensuing kickoff, San Jose’s Jamiro Monteiro stole a pass to start a three-on-two breakaway. Monteiro sent a pass to Espinoza on the right wing and he immediately fed the ball back to Monteiro in the penalty box. He centered the ball to Yueill for an easy one-timer from the top of the 6-yard box past a stunned Seattle defense.

Lodeiro gave the Sounders a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 14th minute after a video review determined Raul Ruidiaz was brought down in the 18-yard box by San Jose’s Nathan Cardoso.

The Sounders made it 2-0 in the 20th minute on a free kick as Lodeiro’s cross found Roldan alone at the top of the 6-yard box for a header.

Espinoza pulled the Earthquakes within 2-1 in first-half stoppage time. His original shot from about 10 yards out was blocked by defender Nouhou, but Espinoza volleyed the rebound over Frei from the top of the 6-yard box.

The Sounders restored their two-goal advantage in the 57th minute. Ruidiaz fed Lodeiro on the left wing and his cross was redirected into the net by Morris from a couple of yards out.
