Titans’ Derrick Henry joins Nashville SC ownership group

0

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry is now a Nashville SC minority owner, the MLS club announced Tuesday.

Principal owner John Ingram confirmed that Henry is among the latest members of the ownership group. Also joining are Nashville native and Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon along with her husband, media and technology investor Jim Toth.

“We meant it when we said we were doing this in Nashville, with Nashville and for Nashville,” Ingram said in a news release. “Having Derrick, Reese and Jim join our group signals our commitment to being a club that is going to do things at the highest level and with the best Nashville has to offer.”

“As a kid growing up in Florida, I imagined being a professional sports owner and the opportunity to do that with a Major League Soccer club is truly a dream come true,” Henry said. “My investment in Nashville SC is way more than financial, it’s truly an investment in the city of Nashville. The chance to be part of a club like Nashville SC, especially after seeing what they are accomplishing in the community, was an opportunity I did not want to miss.”

Henry, 28, is heading into his seventh season with the Titans, who drafted him in the second round in 2016. He is a two-time NFL rushing champion (2019, 2020).

He signed a four-year $50 million contract extension with Tennessee in July 2020.

Denny Hamlin ordered to undergo sensitivity training

Denny Hamlin has been ordered by NASCAR to undergo sensitivity training after he put up a social-media post considered offensive.

Hamlin directed a post toward fellow driver Kyle Larson on Monday that featured a clip making fun of a female Asian driver. Hamlin superimposed Larson’s name over the character.

Larson was born in the United States but his mother is Japanese-American.

Hamlin deleted the post Monday night after drawing criticism.

“I took down a post I made earlier today after reading some of the comments. It was a poor choice of memes and I saw how it was offensive. It came across totally wrong. I apologize,” Hamlin said.

NASCAR said it informed Hamlin on Tuesday about the expectation that he immediately start a sensitivity course.

Hamlin’s post was related to Sunday’s GEICO 500 at Talladega, Ala., when Hamlin took objection to Larson’s late-race maneuvers.

Larson’s actions caused Kurt Busch to crash and also affected Bubba Wallace. Both Busch and Wallace drive for 23XI Racing, co-owned by Hamlin.

Toyota, which has an affiliation with Hamlin, also issued a statement on Tuesday.

“We have spoken with Denny Hamlin regarding his tweet from yesterday. Toyota supports NASCAR’s decision to mandate sensitivity training for Denny and we will all move forward together.”

0

James Madison University catcher Lauren Bernett has died, the school announced Tuesday. She was 20.

The news comes one day after Bernett was named the softball Player of the Week in the Colonial Athletic Conference.

The school, located in Harrisonburg, Va., did not provide any further details about her death.

“Our hearts are aching, hearing the news of the loss of one of our student-athletes,” read a statement from university president Jonathan Alger and athletic director Jeff Bourne. “… We are a tight family. We are grateful that Lauren has been part of our JMU Athletics community and will always consider her to be be a Duke. We will miss her dearly.”

Bernett was named the CAA Player of the Week after batting .788 (7-for-9) with seven RBIs and four runs during a three-game weekend sweep of Drexel. On April 16, she tied a single-game JMU record with seven RBIs in a game against College of Charleston.

In 2021, she helped the Dukes advance to the Women’s College World Series for the first time. They made headlines there with a 4-3 win against No. 1-ranked Oklahoma in their opening game.

JMU canceled a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday at home against Longwood.

Which celebrity Kardashians sent emails to E! trash talking Blac Chyna

0

As Blac Chyna’s case against the Kardashians continues, new facts have emerged. Both Kylie Jenner and Khloe Kardashian sent separate emails, in 2016, to E! executives that were against Blac Chyna. They expressed their concern on the contentious relationship between her and their brother Rob Kardashian, as well as their reality show, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.” The spinoff show “Rob & Chyna” was canceled after its first season.

Chyna, whose actual name is Angela White, was dating Rob Kardashian. They also had a spinoff reality show of their own called “Rob & Chyna.” It was canceled after only one season and the exotic dancer turned model blamed the Kardashians and Jenners for getting the show canceled as they trashed talked her to the network executives. She is suing Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner for $100 million in damages.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CYNBOT3oBs4/

The emails by the two sisters came up during the testimony from Jeff Olde. He was the one who played a large role in getting “Rob & Chyna” on air. The former vice president of development and programming at E! said that the decision for not having a second season of the reality show was due to the acrimonious split that took place place between the couple. The show had been based on “fun, lighthearted entertainment” that was absent after their disastrous split.

Referring to the emails, he said that he didn’t take directions from 17-year olds. He was pointing at Kylie Jenner, who was a teenager around the time the network decided to scrap the second season.

According to the emails, 19-year old Kylie Jenner wrote that although filming was not her favorite, she would sacrifice and give them (the network) episodes and stories. She told the recipients of the email that her sisters would also step up and make up for content that would be lost after “Rob & Chyna” would be canceled.

Kylie also called Chyna “toxic.” She said that Chyna was with Rob because of the TV show and she didn’t love him. She also said that that if they really loved Rob they needed “to come together” and “protect him.”

Khloe Kardashian wrote that “the sisters” were “clearly concerned” for their “brother’s safety” as well as the credibility of their brand. She also mentioned that Chyna and Rob’s issues that were out in public were tarnishing the image of the family.

Meta Gets Physical: Buy VR Headsets in its first retail showroom

0

On Monday, Meta announced that it was opening its first retail showroom. The location, at the company’s Burlingame, California campus, would sell its Oculus virtual reality headsets to promote its most ambitious idea so far–the metaverse. Facebook, as it was originally called before it adopted the name Meta, is taking its initial steps through a physical location, to popularize a virtual world. It will be called “Meta Store.”

CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that the metaverse will become the standard. It will be used for working, socializing and gaming. Meta has allocated $10 billion to build the virtual world called metaverse. The company believes that a virtual world is the future and has invested huge amounts to build and develop the metaverse.

The retail store is expected to open on May 9, 2022. It will have demo areas for customers to try products such as its Oculus virtual reality (VR) headsets as well as apps and games that run on these VR headsets.

The store will sell the Quest 2 headset, accessories and Portal video chat devices. Customers can also try on Ray-Ban Stories, which are smart glasses developed by the company in partnership with the popular eyeglass maker Ray-Ban. However, these smart glasses have to be bought online. Meta also noted that it would roll out a “shop” tab on its website.

The company explained that the goal of opening a Meta Store was to give people a chance to explore the possibilities that their products could achieve. The physical store will let customers have a glimpse of the future as developments increase day by day, on the “metaverse” as it “comes to life.”

Meta also wants to demystify the “concept a bit in the process.” As a long list of banks, footwear companies, fashion brands and others start buying land and opening virtual stores, Meta is doing its bit to make the metaverse or Web3, as it is called, easier to understand, through demos at its first 1,550-square foot physical store in its Burlingame, California campus in America.

Which Companies are Expected to Report Solid Profit Outlook in Wall Street Earnings this Week

0

Wall street sign in New York city financial economy and business district with America national flag background. Stock market trade and exchange zone.

Wall Street investors are expecting that a slew of quarterly results from the United States, notably those from mega cap growth companies, will reinforce corporate America’s strong profit projections and support the case for stocks following a difficult start to the year.

U.S. stock investors, concerned that geopolitical instability and the Federal Reserve’s fight against inflation could stifle economic development, are flocking to defensive sectors, which they believe can better weather storms and pay high dividends.

Even though the broader market has slid, the healthcare, utilities, consumer staples, and real estate sectors have all seen gains in April, following a trend that has seen them outperform the S&P 500 this year.

The recent round of earnings comes against a backdrop of Fed hawkishness and a rapid rise in bond yields, raising concerns about whether policymakers will harm the economy in their efforts to combat the worst inflation in nearly four decades. After a violent selloff on Friday, the S&P 500 fell in April and is now down 10.4% for the year.

Bullish investors are banking on a strong corporate outlook to underpin markets as monetary policy weighs on stocks, increasing pressure on firms to post strong bottom-line earnings and predictions. According to Refinitiv IBES, S&P 500 companies are expected to grow earnings by 9% this year.

Investors have wasted no time in punishing shares of businesses with meagre outcomes so far, particularly those with high valuations.  Netflix  was one of the most recent casualties, with its stock dropping about 35% in a single session after the streaming giant revealed its first loss in members in a decade.

Investors will focus on  Apple,  Microsoft,  Amazon, and  Alphabet, which together have a market capitalization of $8 trillion and account for one-fifth of the S&P 500’s weight. The Big Four have all decreased this year, with Apple down approximately 9%, Amazon down 13.4%, Alphabet down 17.4%, and Microsoft down 18.5%.

For the quarter ending in March, earnings projections for these firms are low. According to Refinitiv statistics,  Microsoft  is estimated to have raised adjusted earnings per share by 12% over the prior year, Apple by 2%, Alphabet by 0.7%, and Amazon by 49%. The S&P 500 is forecast to boost quarterly earnings by 7.3% on average.

Apart from the top four businesses,  Meta Platforms, Visa and  Mastercard, oil heavyweights  Chevron  and  Exxon Mobil, and consumer corporations  Coca-Cola  and  Pepsico  are all expected to report results next week.

Investors will be looking for companies to retain profit margins as inflation threatens to drive up their input costs, in addition to the bottom-line performance and financial outlooks.  JPMorgan  predicted in a note this week that net income margins for S&P 500 corporations should fall to around 13% in 2022, down from a record 13.4% last year.

Walmart adds builder-designer duo furniture as it upgrades home decor

0

Walmart remains in the forefront of innovation and expansion. Its latest move to please its customers and get new ones has been to partner with a popular designer duo, Dave and Jenny Marrs. They are well known as they appear on home-remodeling shows featured on HGTV.

Walmart’s furniture collection now includes a porch swing and a dining table from the star couple’s collection. In an interview with Bloomberg, Julie Barber, who is a senior vice president at the big box retailer, said that the nation’s largest retailer was planning to add indoor furniture, at the earliest.

(Photo/Credit: HGTV)

Barber also said that the partnership was a part of Walmart’s thrust towards “stylish and chic” merchandise. It is a move forward as its customers were looking for such furniture. She added that the retailer was looking at an assortment of furniture and other items that would be of “higher quality” in both home goods and decor.

Walmart has always looked to be a “one-stop shop” for its customers and this was the reason why they were strategically upgrading categories that included “sporting goods, hardware, automotive, paint and outdoor living.”

Walmart has been working towards improving its home department by adding new items, some of which are more upscale than its earlier offerings. Its home department is lucrative to its bottom line as it generates a wider profit margin than its core food business.

The home department, however, does not see huge demand like its food business. This is because the home department has been viewed as one that offered limited choices and was perceived to offer merchandise of low quality.

In the past few years, Walmart has been working to change that perception as it adds a wider rage of merchandise available from a variety of sellers who offer items at different rates, including high end items. The retailer has added a dedicated landing page for furniture and decor items that are upscale. Adding items from the popular builder-designer duo Dave and Jenny Marrs is one more step forward for the largest retailer and employer in the world; to increase access to a wider number and range of items for its customers.

New-look A’s get first glimpse of season at Giants

Left-hander Carlos Rodon will see a familiar opponent with a bunch of unfamiliar faces on Tuesday night as the San Francisco Giants host the opener of a two-game interleague series with the rival Oakland Athletics.

Right-hander Daulton Jefferies (1-2, 1.17 ERA), coming off his best start of the season, is scheduled to begin the series for the A’s.

Rodon (2-0, 1.06 ERA) has been among the National League’s top starters since switching leagues as a free agent in the offseason. Through three starts, the 29-year-old has struck out 29 in 17 innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits and six walks.

After not getting rewarded for a 12-strikeout effort in his Giants debut against the Miami Marlins, Rodon has won his past two outings, including one against a former American League rival, the Cleveland Guardians.

Rodon, who spent the previous seven seasons with the Chicago White Sox, has made four career starts against the A’s, going 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA.

He has faced just five current members of the Oakland team in those four games. That group, headlined by Elvis Andrus’ 1-for-12, has gone just 4-for-31 (.129) against him with six strikeouts.

The Giants will kick off a five-game homestand riding a four-game winning streak, a run that includes a 4-2 victory at Milwaukee on Monday in what appeared might be a nuisance of a stopover on the way home from Washington.

But true to the form that has produced 12 wins in 17 games, the Giants got great pitching from eight guys on a bullpen day. San Francisco prevailed in the end via a two-out, two-run, ninth-inning home run by rookie Luis Gonzalez, the first homer of his career.

The game against the Brewers was squeezed into the Giants’ schedule as part of the compensation for the season-opening lockout. In the end, it added an 11th game to an 8-3 trip that also saw San Francisco face the Guardians, the New York Mets and the Nationals.

After labeling the trip “long, arduous and challenging,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler turned his attention to Gonzalez’s homer.

“Aesthetically, it was really pretty,” he said. “Very beautiful swing and the majestic flight of the ball. It was a really cool moment for our club.”

The A’s are also coming off a low-scoring win, with Stephen Piscotty having produced the only runs in a 2-0 home victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday with a fourth-inning homer.

Piscotty, one of the few impact holdovers from last year’s team, believes his new-look club will make the short trip to San Francisco with confidence.

“I think everyone’s bought in to trying to win ballgames,” he said. “It’s as simple as that. This team still has a lot of talent. Some younger faces on this team, but they can all play ball. It’s exciting to be part of his youthful group.”

Like Rodon, Jefferies hasn’t had a bad start among his first three, outings in which a total of just 11 runs have been scored. The A’s lost two of them — 4-1 and 1-0 — the latter coming at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles in the right-hander’s most recent start on Wednesday.

The only run Jefferies surrendered that day was unearned. He gave up just three hits and no walks while fanning five in six innings.

Jefferies, a University of California product who knows all about the San Francisco Bay Area rivalry, has never faced the Giants.
