Bills pick up fifth-year option on DT Ed Oliver

The Bills exercised the fifth-year option on defensive tackle Ed Oliver, keeping him in Buffalo through at least the 2023 season.

The Bills announced the move on Tuesday. Oliver, who played in college at Houston, was the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

He will earn $10.75 million in 2023. He signed a four-year, $19.56 million rookie contract in 2019.

Oliver, 24, hasn’t missed a regular-season game, playing in 49 career games (40 starts). He became a starter midway through his rookie season. In his career, he has 117 tackles (21 for loss), 12 sacks, eight passes defensed and three forced fumbles.

In 17 games in 2021, he had 41 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble as the Bills won the AFC East.

In six career playoff games, Oliver has 17 tackles and a sack.

The Blue Jackets (36-36-7, 79 points) have been eliminated from playoff contention. Their season finale is Friday night against the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

Jenner, 28, registered 44 points (23 goals, 21 assists) in 59 games in his ninth season with Columbus. His goals and point totals were his highest since 2015-16.

Kuraly, 29, posted 30 points (14 goals, 16 assists) in 77 games in his first season with the Blue Jackets after five seasons with the Boston Bruins. His goals, points and games were all career highs.

Jay Wright intrigued by future NBA possibility

Recently retired Villanova coach Jay Wright said Tuesday he could envision himself coaching in the NBA — one day.

A guest on “Keyshawn, JWill & Max” on ESPN, Wright said working with NBA players during the Olympics opened his eyes to the possibility down the road, but right now he’s looking forward to time off.

Wright, 60, retired last Wednesday after 21 years and two national titles at Villanova.

“Right now I definitely need a break,” Wright said. “Right now I’m looking forward to this (special assistant) position at Villanova. But honestly, down the road, I’d be lying — I don’t know what I’m going to feel like.”

Wright worked under Gregg Popovich at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as an assistant on Team USA’s staff. The team won the gold medal.

He said he feels no regret about his career choice a few days into retirement.

“I know I made the right decision, because I don’t think going into next year I’d be able to do the things I need to do to keep this program at a high level,” Wright said. “But I’m going to take this year and really throw myself into this position at Villanova, and then see what’s out there. I just didn’t want to be the coach at Villanova and not be 100 percent in.”

Kyle Neptune, 37, is taking over for Wright. Most recently the coach at Fordham, Neptune worked as an assistant coach on Wright’s Villanova staff for 10 years.

Trevor Bauer sues woman who accused him of sexual assault

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer is suing the woman who accused him of sexual assault, contending her motive was to destroy his “reputation and baseball career, garner attention for herself, and extract millions of dollars” from him.

The suit was filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and is seeking unspecified monetary and punitive damages. Bauer contends the woman “fabricated allegations of sexual assault” and “made false and malicious statements” as she sought a domestic violence restraining order last June 29.

That filing came a day after Bauer’s most recent pitching performance for the Dodgers, with whom he signed a three-year, $102 million contract before the 2021 season. He has been on Major League Baseball administrative leave since July 2, although the Los Angeles County district attorney declined to file charges.

Bauer has denied all wrongdoing.

The court filing describes, in graphic detail, the two sexual encounters between Bauer and the woman, who lives in San Diego, that occurred last spring. Per company policy, Field Level Media will not publish the name of alleged victims of sexual assault.

Bauer, 31, admits to having rough sex with her, which he said was at the woman’s request, and never performed a sexual act she didn’t want. The woman, in her request for the restraining order, accused him of acts that including choking her to the point of unconsciousness and punching her to the point of needing medical attention.

The restraining order was denied.

In the lawsuit, Bauer said the woman contacted him after their first sexual encounter in an attempt to set up a second meeting for “a rougher sexual experience so she could later claim this sexual experience was not what she requested and thereby lay the groundwork for a financial settlement.”

The suit also states the woman texted a friend and told her “they would be able to travel to Europe together in style once she was successful in her plot to destroy Mr. Bauer by tricking him into having rough and rougher sex with her.”

Also named in the suit is the woman’s attorney, Fred Thiagarajah, who is being accused of defamation because of comments he made to The Washington Post. Bauer previously sued Deadspin and The Athletic in relation to the case.

Bauer’s paid leave has been extended multiple times and is due to expire Friday. MLB has been conducting its own investigation and can choose to suspend Bauer under league policies even if no criminal charges are filed.

Atlanta United’s George Campbell ‘week-to-week’ with injury

0

Atlanta United FC will likely be without one of its top defenders when it travels to play CF Montreal on Saturday.

The club announced Tuesday that centerback George Campbell is “out week-to-week” after suffering an abductor injury during the club’s 2-1 loss to Inter Miami CF on Sunday.

Campbell, 20, is a homegrown player for the Five Stripes, having come up in their academy and playing for Atlanta United 2 before making his MLS debut in 2020.

He has featured in 24 MLS matches in his career, including eight this season, seven of which were starts. Campbell is second on the team in minutes played this season with 649, behind fellow defender Andrew Gutman (706).

“He’s a center back with enormous potential. We’re very high on George,” Atlanta coach Gonzalo Pineda said after the club’s loss to Miami. “He’s still a very young player, and at times, centerbacks just take a bit longer to find consistency. That’s all he’s missing and that will come in time, I would say. He has to believe in himself. I believe in him. The team believes in him, because he’s a hard worker.”

If Campbell can’t play on Saturday, Atlanta could turn to Argentine defender Alan Franco, or American Alex de John.

Atlanta (3-3-2, 11 points) is fourth in the Eastern Conference table this season.

Williams, 24, had 53 tackles (seven for loss) and six sacks in 15 games (all starts) in 2021.

Russia removed as host of ’23 hockey world championship

Russia has been removed as host of the men’s 2023 Ice Hockey World Championship, the International Ice Hockey Federation Council announced Tuesday.

The tournament, originally slated for May 5-21, 2023, in St. Petersburg, will be relocated due to concern for the safety and well-being of players and fans in light of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

An alternative site will be confirmed during next month’s world championships in Finland.

The IIHF Council made a similar decision earlier to withdraw the 2023 World Junior Championship that was to be held in Omsk and Novosibirsk in Russia beginning in late December.

Bucks look to dispatch Bulls, advance to second round

The Milwaukee Bucks look to punch their ticket to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs on Thursday when they host the Chicago Bulls in Game 5 of their series.

After dropping Game 2 of their first-round set, the Bucks bounced back with a vengeance by winning consecutive contests on the road to take a 3-1 series lead. The last two wins came in dominating fashion for Milwaukee, which recorded a 27-point average margin of victory.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks in their 119-95 win over Chicago in Game 4 on Sunday afternoon with 32 points and 17 rebounds. Reserve Grayson Allen erupted for 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting, and Jrue Holiday added 26.

With Khris Middleton sidelined due to a sprained MCL, Allen has stepped up over the last two games by averaging 24.5 points and 4.0 rebounds off the bench.

Allen has been particularly sharp from 3-point range, sinking 11 of his last 14 shots (78.6 percent).

“Obviously much needed. The time was right, and he’s been really good,” Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer said. “I think he’s just embracing the moment, embracing the opportunity. I think the guys are doing a good job screening for him, things like that.”

While things have been clicking on the offensive end for the Bucks, their defense also has been stout. Milwaukee has held Chicago under 100 points in three of four games in the series.

In addition to Middleton, George Hill will miss Wednesday’s contest with an abdomen injury. Luca Vildoza also is listed as day-to-day.

Now facing elimination, the Bulls will be looking to force Game 6 following their lackluster shooting performance on Sunday.

Chicago shot just 38.9 percent from the field (35 of 90) and 25.0 percent from 3-point range (9 of 36). The Bulls have not been able to find their stroke from distance all series, as they have shot under 27 percent from deep in three of four games.

“You know they (the Bucks) shot the ball well. That was the difference in the game in my opinion,” Chicago coach Billy Donovan said. “If you look at their shooting from the 3-point line compared to ours, that was the difference.”

The Bulls’ challenge became even greater when All-Star Zach LaVine entered the NBA’s health and safety protocol on Tuesday.

LaVine led the Bulls in Sunday’s loss with 24 points on 8-of-18 shooting. He also had 13 assists and five rebounds.

DeMar DeRozan contributed 23 points and Patrick Williams added 20 to go along with 10 rebounds. Nikola Vucevic notched 11 points and 10 rebounds to record his third double-double of the series.

Lonzo Ball (knee) and Matt Thomas (leg) are still out, and the Bulls’ backcourt depth stretched even thinner with Alex Caruso now in the league’s concussion protocol.

“His availability for Game 5 is up in the air,” Donovan said of Caruso, who left Sunday’s game after getting hit in the face in the second quarter.

If LaVine and Caruso have to miss Game 5, Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White likely will be directing the offense. White has averaged 6.3 points during the series, while Dosunmu has averaged just 3.0.

Rahm: Phil Mickelson’s legacy shouldn’t be tarnished by Saudi comments

0

To Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson’s controversial comments about and potential involvement with a Saudi-backed golf tour are not enough to tarnish his legacy in the sport.

Rahm told reporters Tuesday ahead of the Mexico Open that Mickelson “has given his life to golf,” adding that the six-time major champion does need to show remorse in order to move past the situation.

“Everybody makes mistakes and everything can be rectified, and I believe that can happen, but that has to come from him as well,” Rahm said. “I think if they start realizing everything he has done in his career since he started, I think a lot of people would understand a little bit more where he’s coming from.”

Mickelson came under fire for remarks he made about the so-called Super Golf League, now the LIV Golf Invitational Series, backed by Saudi financiers. He told author Alan Shipnuck that the Saudis were “scary (expletives) to get involved with” with a “horrible record on human rights,” but he intended to work with them anyway in an attempt to gain leverage with the PGA Tour on financial matters.

After issuing a mea culpa in February, losing multiple sponsors and saying he needed “time away” from the sport, Mickelson went silent and did not play in the Masters.

This week, his representatives released a statement saying the 51-year-old has registered for the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open and filed a request to play in the first event of the LIV Golf Invitational Series. But Mickelson has not made a final decision of which events he will play.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has threatened lifetime bans for players who opt for LIV Golf, which had been considered a rival league before the company announced a scaled-back, eight-event schedule for the first season.

“I don’t think what’s happened recently should, or will, damage his legacy too much,” Rahm said, speaking ahead of this week’s Mexico Open. “That guy has given his life to golf, and a lot of what we have and a lot of what we are competing on now is thanks to him.

“I know he’s in a bit of a slump right now, for whatever that may be, but I don’t think his whole career or legacy should change because of a couple of comments.”

Rahm’s opinions are in line with other PGA Tour players like Rory McIlroy, who was critical of Mickelson in February but later said “we all make mistakes” and expressed hope Mickelson could come back to the PGA Tour at some point.
