Brewers place SS Willy Adames (ankle) on 10-day IL

The Milwaukee Brewers placed Willy Adames on the 10-day injured list Wednesday and recalled fellow infielder Keston Hiura from Triple-A Nashville.

Adames’ move is retroactive to Monday, one day after he sustained a high left ankle sprain while sliding into home on a sacrifice fly.

Adames, 26, shares the team lead with nine homers. He also has 24 RBIs while batting just .208 in 35 games this season.

Adames is a career .258 hitter with 72 homers and 207 RBIs in 466 career games with the Tampa Bay Rays and Brewers.

Hiura, 25, batted .216 with two homers and five RBIs in 15 games earlier this season with Milwaukee.

Twins reinstate SS Carlos Correa from injured list

The Minnesota Twins reinstated shortstop Carlos Correa from the 10-day injured list before Wednesday’s road game against the Oakland Athletics.

Correa sustained a right middle finger contusion when he fouled a ball off his hand on May 5 at Baltimore. He has missed the last 11 games.

Correa, 27, was starting to heat up, batting .412 with three doubles, one home run and eight RBIs in eight games leading up to the injury. For the season, the two-time All-Star is hitting .255 with two HRs and 11 RBIs.

To make room on the 26-man roster, the Twins optioned infielder Royce Lewis to Triple-A St. Paul. Lewis, 22, made his MLB debut on May 6 and batting .308 with two homers and five RBIs in 11 games for Minnesota.

Royals’ Nicky Lopez aims to keep contributing vs. White Sox

There’s a truth in sports that you can’t make a big play if you’re not in the game. So the place in the lineup for a baseball player is not nearly as important as being in the lineup.

For players such as Kansas City’s Nicky Lopez, finding a groove in the ninth spot is all about making the most of a hitting situation. He was 4-for-6 plus a walk in the ninth spot in Tuesday’s doubleheader against the White Sox.

Lopez likely will be back in that same position on Wednesday night when the Royals host the Chicago White Sox in the fourth contest of a five-game series.

The White Sox will send Lucas Giolito (2-1, 2.70 ERA) to the mound to face fellow right-hander Zack Greinke (0-2, 3.52). Giolito was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list earlier on Wednesday.

Giolito will not face Royals star catcher Salvador Perez, however. Perez is expected to miss at least two weeks with a sprained left thumb.

The two clubs split a doubleheader Tuesday, with the White Sox winning the opener 3-0 and the Royals claiming the nightcap 2-1. Runs were hard to come by, so producing from the bottom of the order can be a catalyst to igniting a rally.

“(Batting) No. 2 and 9 are where I want to be,” Lopez said. “The 2-hole particularly, but I feel comfortable in the 9-hole.”

Ironically, White Sox manager Tony La Russa likes to use the nine-hole in the lineup as a “second leadoff” spot. Lopez says it’s more than just a label.

“I believe that whenever the first pitch is thrown that anybody can be that second leadoff hitter,” Lopez said. “But there’s a role for the 9-hole hitter to get on base for the top of the order. Whether I’m hitting 9, or 2, or wherever I’m hitting, my job is to get on base.”

Lopez, who was hitting .367 after 10 games, had seen his average drop below .200. Now, he’s just trying to find the groove again and is up to .215.

“The game of baseball has a funny way of kicking you when you’re down,” he said. “It keeps kicking you until you make adjustments. I just need to stay positive, make the proper adjustments and keep working.”

Lopez is only 3-for-20 lifetime against Giolito, with one extra-base hit and an RBI. Giolito is 8-4 in his career against the Royals, with a 3.43 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 102 1/3 innings over 17 starts.

Greinke is still looking for his first win this season for the Royals, though he’s pitched well.

He allowed three or fewer runs in his first six outings before allowing five runs in Colorado in his last start. He’s 9-10 with a 3.97 ERA in 29 career outings (26 starts) against the White Sox.

Starter Dylan Cease got the victory for Chicago in the opener of Tuesday’s doubleheader, striking out nine in 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball to improve to 4-1.

“Fortunately, I executed pitches with guys in scoring position pretty well today and got some big strikeouts,” Cease told mlb.com.

Wings, Mercury looking for identities in clash

The Phoenix Mercury and Dallas Wings are trying to figure things out during the early stages of the WNBA season.

Both teams are dealing with adjustments and are 2-2. Both teams are coming off losses as they meet Thursday night in Phoenix.

The Mercury are playing without Kia Nurse (knee) and Brittney Griner (detained in Russia) in addition to adjusting to a roster featuring a half-dozen new faces.

“We’re still a work in a progress,” guard Diana Taurasi said. “We’ve got to get on the same page and we’ll be OK.”

Taurasi and fellow All-Star teammate Skylar Diggins-Smith exchanged heated words and had to be separated on the bench during the second quarter of an 86-74 loss at Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Tina Charles led the Mercury with 17 points and nine rebounds, but the game turned when the Aces outscored Phoenix 30-12 in the third quarter.

“We want to be well balanced on both sides,” Taurasi said, “and have multiple scorers, multiple people making plays.”

Dallas has been playing without All-Star forward Satou Sabally, who could return as early as Saturday. Sabally was named MVP of the finals as her team won the Turkish championship last Sunday.

Her teammates are coming off an 84-68 home loss to league-leading Washington on Tuesday.

The Wings, like Phoenix, lost contact in the third quarter as the Mystics outscored them 31-13 in the period to pull away after leading by just three points at halftime.

“We got here in front of our fans and we became selfish,” Dallas coach Vickie Johnson said. “A lot of one-on-one basketball. We didn’t move the basketball.”

Wings leading scorer Arike Ogunbowale had just six points in 32 minutes as the Wings shot 41 percent from the floor.

“We have to look back and look in the mirror and think, ‘What can I do better for the team?'” said guard Marina Mabrey, who scored a team-high 16 points for the Wings.

Lynx challenge high-flying Aces with Kayla McBride back

The Las Vegas Aces welcome the Minnesota Lynx to town on Thursday for a Commissioner’s Cup game, with the visitors coming off one of the early season’s most dramatic wins.

The Lynx (1-4) scored their first victory on Tuesday, 87-84, when Kayla McBride powered a fourth-quarter rally.

McBride’s 24-point performance — including the game-winning 3-point play with 2.1 seconds remaining — came just one day after her return to the United States from Turkey.

McBride played for Fenerbahce S.K. in Turkey’s Women’s Basketball Super League championship game on Sunday. She arrived in Los Angeles the following day and powered Minnesota to its first win of the season on Tuesday.

“The whole ride (to Los Angeles), I’m thinking about how grateful I am to do what I do,” McBride said postgame. “Being a professional athlete, it’s only going to last so long. So, you have to grind. But the chemistry, how much we grew just tonight, is worth it.”

Adding the three-time All-Star McBride to the lineup makes Minnesota a more potent team. The Lynx also got a boost with the signing of Moriah Jefferson.

Minnesota signed Jefferson shortly after Dallas waived her on May 9. Jefferson scored 16 points in her Lynx debut, then went for 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals in Tuesday’s win.

Paired with seven-time All-Star and former Most Valuable Player Sylvia Fowles, whose 20-point and 12-rebound showing at Los Angeles marked her third consecutive double-double, Minnesota aims to start a run.

Las Vegas (4-1), meanwhile, seeks its third straight win while playing at the most torrid offensive pace of any team in the young WNBA season.

The Aces average a league-best 89.8 points per game after Tuesday’s 86-74 defeat of Phoenix. All five Las Vegas starters scored in double figures, with Kelsey Plum’s 20 points leading the way.

Tuesday’s effort proved reflective of the Aces’ overall start to the season, as the entire starting five is averaging between Chelsea Gray’s 10.6 points per game to Plum and Jackie Young’s team-leading 18.0 per game.

A’ja Wilson and Dearica Hamby are both averaging double-doubles — 15.2 points and 10.8 rebounds per game for Wilson, and 14.4 points with 10.8 rebounds per for Hamby.

The Aces’ scoring balance reflects the philosophy first-year head coach Becky Hammon noted in her postgame press conference.

“It’s not easy to be great, but I’m asking them to be great every night. We can be great, but we have to be great together,” she said. “They were great together in the second half.”

Ohio State boosting Ryan Day’s salary to $9.5M

Ohio State football coach Ryan Day is set to receive to a two-year contract extension that boosts his annual salary to $9.5 million through the 2028 season.

The deal announced by the school Wednesday increases Day’s annual compensation from $7.6 million. It is pending the approval of the university’s board of trustees in a vote to be held Thursday.

Day, 43, has led the Buckeyes to a 34-4 record (23-1 Big Ten) since being named the program’s 25th head coach on Dec. 4, 2018.

Day’s teams have made two appearances in the College Football Playoff and won two Big Ten championships.

Ohio State announced updates for four other head coaches. Men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann and men’s ice hockey coach Steve Rohlik will receive extensions and women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff and men’s lacrosse coach Nick Myers will receive new contracts.

Holtmann’s three-year extension includes a $500,000 raise to $3.5 million per year in salary. His Buckeyes are one of three teams to win at least 20 games in each of his first five seasons, along with Kansas and Oregon.

McGuff’s new four-year deal includes an annual compensation of $1.05 million and runs through the 2025-26 season. Ohio State finished 25-7 in his ninth season at the helm of the program in 2021-22.

Rohlik’s two-year extension runs through the 2025-26 campaign. The two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (2018, 2019) just completed his ninth season as head coach of the Buckeyes.

Myers’ new five-year contract runs through the 2027 season. He is the program’s all-time winningest coach and has led Ohio State to four NCAA Tournament berths in 14 seasons.

Dallas Stars sign F Fredrik Olofsson

The Dallas Stars signed forward Fredrik Olofsson to a one-year, $750,000 contract on Wednesday.

Olofsson, who turns 26 years old later this month, spent the past two seasons in the Swedish Hockey League. He also played for Sweden in the Olympics this year.

In his past two seasons, Olofsson had 28 goals and 48 assists in 100 games with Oskarshamn IK.

The Chicago Blackhawks drafted Olofsson in the fourth round (No. 98 overall) in 2014. He returned to Sweden after failing to reach a contract agreement with the team.

Commanders sign first-rounder Jahan Dotson

First-round pick Jahan Dotson signed a four-year contract with the Washington Commanders worth $15.1 million, according to the NFL salary slotting system.

Dotson, the 16th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, also has a fifth-year team option in his deal, customary for NFL first-rounders.

Dotson had 91 catches for 1,182 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final season at Penn State and was granted permission from head coach Ron Rivera to miss a day of the team’s minicamp to attend graduation.

Dotson gives the rebuilt Washington offense a potential No. 2 receiver next to Terry McLaurin.

McLaurin is not attending team workouts while angling for a long-term deal. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract during an offseason in which wide receivers have raised the market value of the top players at the position significantly.

The Commanders are hoping to have all of the regulars assembled for a mandatory camp later this month, including new quarterback Carson Wentz.

Vegas F Mark Stone to undergo back surgery

Vegas Golden Knights captain Mark Stone is scheduled to undergo back surgery this week, the team announced Wednesday.

Stone, 30, was dogged by injuries throughout the season. He finished with nine goals and 21 assists in 37 games, and he had four stints on injured reserve.

The dropoff in production was stark for Stone, who had 20-plus goals in each of his previous seven seasons. He has 179 career goals in 541 games with the Ottawa Senators and Vegas.

Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon said earlier this week that he expects Stone to be ready for training camp next season.

The team said Stone’s procedure was scheduled for Thursday.

Chargers sign veteran DL Morgan Fox

The Los Angeles Chargers signed veteran defensive lineman Morgan Fox on Wednesday, agent David Canter declared via social media.

Fox, 27, played in all 17 games (nine starts) for the Carolina Panthers in 2021 and posted 34 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

He spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams after going undrafted in 2016.

Current Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was Fox’s defensive coordinator with the Rams in 2020.

Fox has 12 sacks, 24 quarterback hits, 103 tackles and four fumble recoveries in 69 career games (15 starts).
