NHL roundup: Penguins rout Rangers, take series lead

Danton Heinen scored a tiebreaking goal at 11:02 of the third period Saturday as the Pittsburgh Penguins downed the visiting New York Rangers 7-4 for a 2-1 first-round playoff series lead.

After the Rangers erased a three-goal deficit to tie it 4-4, Heinen caught up with a loose puck that squirted out of a tangle in the corner and, from the right circle, ripped it between the pads of goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.

Jake Guentzel and Jeff Carter, with his second of the game, added empty-netters to seal it.

Evan Rodrigues had two goals and an assist, Brock McGinn also scored, and Mike Matheson added three helpers and Sidney Crosby two for the Penguins. Pittsburgh goaltender Louis Domingue made 32 saves and had an assist.

Kaapo Kakko, Frank Vatrano, Artemi Panarin and Andrew Copp scored for the Rangers.

Capitals 6, Panthers 1

Goalie Ilya Samsonov made 29 saves for his first playoff victory as Washington defeated visiting Florida to gain the series lead against the NHL’s No. 1 team.

The eighth-seeded Capitals lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 against the top-seeded Panthers, who won the Presidents’ Cup as the NHL’s top team in the regular season. Game 4 is set for Monday night in Washington D.C.

The Capitals, who rallied from an early 1-0 deficit, got goals from T.J. Oshie, Marcus Johansson, Trevor Van Riemsdyk, Alex Ovechkin, John Carlson (empty-netter) and Garnet Hathaway.

Avalanche 7, Predators 3

Gabriel Landeskog had two goals and two assists as visiting Colorado pushed Nashville to the brink of elimination.

The Avalanche lead the best-of-seven series 3-0.

Colorado goalie Darcy Kuemper left the game with 57 seconds remaining in the first period when the stick of Predators forward Ryan Johansen caught him through his mask. He stopped nine of 10 shots. Pavel Francouz came on in relief and made 18 saves.

Stars 4, Flames 2

Joe Pavelski scored twice, including the game-winning goal midway through the third period, to lead host Dallas to a victory over Calgary in Game 3 of their Western Conference first-round series.

Radek Faksa and Roope Hintz also scored for the Stars, while Miro Heiskanen collected two assists. Goaltender Jake Oettinger made 39 saves, his biggest a breakaway stop on Johnny Gaudreau with just over three minutes remaining.

Trevor Lewis and Elias Lindholm replied for the Flames. Goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 28 shots.

Erik Hurtado’s late tally salvages CRew draw vs. Revolution

0

Erik Hurtado came off the bench to score the tying goal in the 89th minute when the Columbus Crew rallied to tie the New England Revolution 2-2 in Foxborough, Mass., on Saturday.

The Revolution (3-5-2, 11 points) thought it had the victory secured when Adam Buksa put the Revolution ahead 2-1 in the 82nd minute but Hurtado, who entered in the 84th minute, converted a cross by Derrick Etienne Jr., who assisted both goals for the Crew (3-3-4, 13 points).

New England’s Tommy McNamara put a shot off the crossbar in the 94th minute as the Revolution failed to win consecutive games for a sixth consecutive time (0-4-2) since September.

Miguel Berry gave Columbus the lead in the 27th minute before DeJuan Jones tied it in the 70th.

Berry scored his first goals since the season opener vs. Vancouver on Feb. 26.

Pedro Santos from his left back position led the transition into the final third and found Etienne on the left wing. Berry made a run to the middle of the box to get inside Andrew Farrell to slot the pass from Etienne.

Etienne, a midfielder who is second on the team with three goals, moved to right back when Marlon Hairston was scratched from the starting lineup with an undisclosed injury.

Until the Berry goal, the best scoring chance for either team was Darlington Nagbe getting behind the defense off a setup by Yaw Yeboah only to have Matt Turner make his only save of the match.

Turner, who is headed to England’s Arsenal this summer, made his second appearance of the season after recovering from a foot injury.

Jones got the equalizer thanks to a cross to the far post from the right channel by Emmanuel Boateng. It was the first goal allowed by the Crew after back-to-back shutouts for Eloy Room, who did not have a save.

The Crew plays at New York City on May 14. The Revolution are away against Atlanta United on May 15.

Sabrina Ionescu leads Liberty past Sun, 81-79

Sabrina Ionescu scored eight consecutive points for New York during its decisive fourth-quarter run Saturday as the Liberty edged the visiting Connecticut Sun, 81-79, in the season opener for both teams.

Ionescu finished with 25 points and had a team-high six assists for the Liberty, who overcame an early 10-point deficit and squandered an 11-point third quarter lead.

Natasha Howard scored 16 points while Sami Whitcomb (15 points) and Jocelyn Willoughby (13) each got into double figures for the Liberty, who earned the eighth and final playoff spot in the WNBA last season.

Alyssa Thomas had 25 points and seven rebounds for the Sun, who finished a WNBA-best 26-6 during the regular season last year. Reigning MVP Jonquel Jones had 15 points and seven rebounds while Jasmine Thomas scored 13 points. Brionna Jones added 11 points and DiJonai Carrington finished with 10.

The Sun led 12-2 in the first and the Liberty twice led by 11 in the third before a back-and-forth final quarter.

Ionescu’s three-point play gave New York its first lead of the fourth at 71-70 with 3:51 remaining. Thomas responded with her own three-point play and the teams traded empty possessions before Ionescu put the hosts ahead for good by draining a 3-pointer with 3:01 left.

After Jonquel Jones missed a 3-pointer, Ionescu hit a layup to extend the lead to 76-73.

The Sun got within two points twice and had a chance to tie or take the lead with under 40 seconds left, but Jonquel Jones missed a 3-pointer and a baseline jumper in the same possession before Willoughby sank one of two free throws with 24.4 seconds remaining.

Following a timeout by the Sun, Thomas missed a fallaway 3-pointer with Willoughby’s hand in her face. Willoughby grabbed the rebound and split another pair of free throws.

Thomas misfired on a 3-pointer on the next trip down the floor and Willoughby iced the game with another free throw before Jonquel Jones drained a 3-pointer shortly before the buzzer.

Joe Pavelski’s 2 goals lead Stars past Flames in Game 3

Joe Pavelski scored twice, including the game-winning goal midway through the third period to lead the host Dallas Stars to a 4-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday in Game 3 of their Western Conference first-round series.

Dallas has a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series and will look to take a commanding edge in Game 4 at home on Monday.

With the score tied 2-2, Vladislav Namestnikov’s long shot was kicked out to the slot and Pavelski pounced on the rebound for this third goal of the playoffs. Pavelski has scored 10 goals in 16 career playoff games against Calgary. His 14 career playoff game-winning goals is the most among active players.

Hintz added an empty-net goal just before the buzzer.

The Flames failed to convert on four man-advantages in the game and have not scored on their last 11 power plays after making the most of their first chance in the opener.

Faksa’s first goal of the playoffs opened the scoring at 8:21 when he deflected Esa Lindell’s waist-high point shot into the cage.

Lewis replied at 13:45 to snap a 15-game postseason goal drought with his first playoff tally since April 20, 2016. During a scramble, Milan Lucic’s attempt was denied, but Lewis was on the spot for the rebound. It snapped Oettinger’s shutout streak at 128 minutes and 44 seconds, a run that dated back to early in the first period of the series opener.

Lindholm put the Flames ahead at 3:40 of the second period with his second of the playoffs. Calgary’s top line created all kinds of pressure before Gaudreau fed a pass to his open teammate in the right circle, and Lindholm buried the one-timer.

However, Pavelski’s rebound goal tied the game 2-2 just past the midway point of the second period. Seconds after Markstrom made a stacked-pad save on Heiskanen, Pavelski converted a rebound.

Taxi Fountas’ brace powers D.C. United past Dynamo

0

Taxi Fountas scored twice to lift D.C. United to a 2-0 win against the visiting Houston Dynamo on Saturday.

United (4-5-0, 12 points), who won for the second time in three games under interim coach Chad Ashton, defeated Houston for the first time since Oct. 12, 2014.

The Dynamo (3-4-3, 12 points) have lost three straight after a 3-0-2 run.

Both sides struggled to generate any attack through the opening 24 minutes. D.C. had just three attempts, none on target, while Houston had zero shot attempts.

The visitors finally had a chance a minute later when Darwin Quintero got around goalkeeper Bill Hamid but was denied by a block from United defender Steven Birnbaum.

D.C. started to pick it up in the 33rd minute. Julian Gressel fed Fountas for a sharp angle shot that went over the net and a minute later, a corner ended with the ball again sailing over the net.

Fountas struck in the 35th minute to give United a 1-0 lead on their third corner of the opening half.

Gressel volleyed the corner to Fountas coming into the top of the box. The Greek international finished it with a quick shot into the left of the net past goalkeeper Steve Clark, who barely budged for a save attempt.

Fountas made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute. Brad Smith sent a cross to him on the right side inside the box and Fountas got in front of defender Adam Lundqvist before sending the ball under the bar.

Hamid went down in pain in the 45th minute off a scramble in the goal area. After being tended to by trainers, he played the remainder of the half and the first three minutes of the second half before he subbed off for Rafael Romo, who made his MLS debut.

Fountas came close to a hat trick in the 59th minute when he headed a cross from Edison Flores but was denied by a diving Clark.

Matias Vera had one of the best chances for the visitors in the 63rd minute but his shot went right to Romo.

Penguins pull away from Rangers in third, 7-4

New York starting goaltender Igor Shesterkin got pulled after allowing four goals on 15 shots in the first. Georgiev, in his NHL playoff debut, made 19 saves.

The Penguins got the first goal of the game and their first lead of the series at 1:57 of the first.

McGinn’s shot from deep off Shesterkin originally was waived off because the net came off its moorings, but upon review it was determined New York’s Patrik Nemeth had knocked it off.

At 5:08 of the first, Kakko scored on a rising shot from the right circle to tie it for the Rangers.

During a power play, a shot by Rodrigues went in off Carter to put Pittsburgh back on top 2-1 at 8:18 of the first.

Again on a power play, Pittsburgh pushed it to 3-1 at 10:31 of the first when Rodrigues chipped the puck past Shesterkin’s blocker.

Rodrigues struck again at 15:15 of the first, converting a feed from Brian Boyle to make it 4-1.

New York cut it to 4-2 at 6:51 of the second when Vatrano deposited a one-timer, and Panarin roofed a shot past Domingue at 7:58, making it 4-3.

New York tied it at 15:59 of the second when Copp batted the puck in as Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang crashed into a post and knocked the net off.

Timbers end scoreless drought in tie with Red Bulls

0

Jaroslaw Niezgoda scored in the 53rd minute to end a 335-minute scoreless drought for the Portland Timbers, who played to a 1-1 tie with the host New York Red Bulls on Saturday night in Harrison, N.J.

Portland (2-3-6, 12 points) saw its winless skid reach four games (0-1-2) despite scoring for the first time since Yimmi Chara scored in the 78th minute on April 9 at Vancouver.

Niezgoda ended the drought when he received a long cross through the box from Santiago Moreno. He finished the sequence by using his left foot to bury the shot into the bottom right corner of the net for his third goal of the season.

Aaron Long scored in the 67th minute for the Red Bulls (5-2-3, 18 points), who have earned 15 points from five road victories. New York dropped to 0-2-3 at home this season.

The Red Bulls also played without Patryk Klimala (health and safety protocols), who scored twice in last week’s win at Chicago.

Goalkeeper David Bingham made three saves in his Portland debut, including a diving right hand stop on Lewis Morgan in the 67th minute.

Portland took seven shots on New York goalkeeper Carlos Coronel but Niezgoda’s goal was the only shot on target.

Long leveled the game moments after Bingham’s stop on Morgan when Portland was unable to clear and the Red Bulls retained possession with a corner kick.

Dylan Nealis gained possession and withstood a crowd in the box. He quickly headed the ball to Long, whose right-footed shot from about six yards out went past Bingham to the bottom right corner.

After Long scored, Bingham preserved the deadlock with an off-balance stop on Morgan’s left-footed shot in the 84th minute.

New York was unable to get the second goal in the seventh and final minute of stoppage time when Cristian Casseres Jr. saw his right-footed shot from outside the box sail too high.

Warriors shoot 63.1 percent in Game 3 blowout of Grizzlies

Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson combined for 78 points, and the Golden State Warriors rode an offensive masterpiece to a 142-112 victory over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night in San Francisco.

The Warriors took a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series.

Curry had a team-high 30 points, Poole 27 off the bench and Thompson 21 in his most productive effort of the series, helping Golden State run off to the first one-sided victory in the best-of-seven series.

Game 4 is scheduled for Monday night, also in San Francisco.

Coming off a 47-point explosion in a Game 2, Ja Morant led all scorers again with 34 points before taking the final 6:19 of the game off to have his right knee examined.

Morant suffered the injury seconds earlier when it appeared he clashed knees with Poole. The Memphis star played for about another minute, but then with his team down by 17 points, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins pulled Morant and sent him straight to the locker room.

Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. combined for four of five Memphis 3-pointers in the game’s first five minutes as the Grizzlies burst out to an 18-8 lead.

The Grizzlies led by as many as 13 before Golden State dominated the final 42 minutes of the game, shooting 63.1 percent overall and 53.1 percent on 3-pointers.

Curry shot 7-for-14, Poole 11-for-17 and Thompson 8-for-13 for Golden State. Almost half of Curry’s scoring came on a 14-for-14 performance from the free-throw line.

On a night when he passed Paul Pierce and Kevin McHale to move into 21st place on the NBA’s all-time postseason scoring list, Curry topped 30 points for the fourth time in these playoffs and 44th time in his career.

Thompson was Golden State’s top shooter from beyond the arc, going 4-for-6. Thompson also found time for a game-high nine rebounds, while Draymond Green chipped in with five points, five rebounds and a game-high eight assists.

Jonathan Kuminga, who at age 19 became the youngest player in NBA history to start a playoff game, added 18 points for Golden State. Andrew Wiggins (17) and Otto Porter Jr. (13) gave the hosts six players in double figures.

Morant finished 13-for-21 from the field and 4-for-7 on 3-pointers for the Grizzlies, who shot 43.5 percent overall and 37.2 percent on 3-pointers. He also had team-highs in assists with seven and steals with three.

Desmond Bane had his best game of the series with 16 points for the Grizzlies, while Jackson totaled 15 and De’Anthony Melton 12.

After pair of 6-goal wins, Oilers look to bury Kings

It’s not a do-or-die situation for the Los Angeles Kings, but Sunday’s Game 4 home clash with the Edmonton Oilers is very close to being that critical.

Having suffered consecutive blowout losses, the Kings trail the Oilers 2-1 in the best-of-seven Western Conference opening-round series. The Oilers rang up six-goal victories in consecutive playoff games for the first time in franchise history with a 6-0 win in Game 2 and then Friday’s 8-2 shellacking.

It’s up to the Kings to recover and return the series to Edmonton all-squared, otherwise the end may be nigh on their surprising season, even though they started the postseason with a 4-3 victory last week in Edmonton.

“We have to look at it as 2-1, you don’t want to dwell on all of the goals,” said Kings forward Phillip Danault, who referred to Friday’s loss as a “slap in the face.” “We didn’t play well at all and we have to work harder and be better. Everyone. We have to step up. No matter how many young guys we have, no matter how many veterans, we have to step up together and be better.”

A case can be made the Kings deserved a better fate in their last outing. Los Angeles managed 19 shots on goal in the first period but trailed 2-0 at the intermission. By the middle of the second period, it was a 5-0 game and the Oilers cruised to the victory.

“You can’t lose confidence this time of the year,” insisted defenseman Alex Edler. “We know what kind of team we have and we haven’t shown it over the last two games. We just have to look ahead to the next one.”

The Oilers may be rolling but should be well aware how the tide can turn. For their part, they are saying the right things while knowing they can take a stranglehold on the series and give themselves an opportunity to clinch at home and punch a ticket to the second round.

“We don’t really look at it as 14-2 (in the last two games), we look at it as we’re up 2-1 in the series with a really important game on Sunday,” said forward Evander Kane, who posted his first career playoff hat trick on Friday and has five goals in the two routs. “There’s still room for our game to improve.

“I think we can have better starts. I don’t think we’ve had a great start in any of the three games in this series, but we’ve stuck with it.”

The Oilers are best to remind themselves how they have relied upon goaltender Mike Smith to hold firm in the first period of both games. Smith was also strong early in the third period Friday when the Kings had a chance to inch closer from their 5-2 deficit before the Oilers scored a trio of late goals.

“They have good pushes, they’re a solid team over there,” said Oilers captain Connor McDavid. “This is a long way from over.”

“Finding ways to win games, that’s all that matters this time of year. It doesn’t really matter how it looks or what happens,” McDavid said, trying to downplay the significance of one-sided wins. “I think we’ve done a good job of playing well, playing hard, playing physical. They played hard, but I think we did a good job of responding.”

SKC grabs point in scoreless road tie with NYCFC

0

Sporting Kansas City picked up its first point on the road this season as they played high-scoring New York City FC to a 0-0 draw in a steady rain at Citi Field.

Sporting had played 20 straight road matches without a draw, though they have drawn the last two matches at home. Sporting keeper Tim Melia picked up his club record 63rd shutout in his SKC career.

NYCFC (4-3-2, 14 points) dropped to 4-1-1 in their six home games.

Sporting KC (2-6-3, 9 points) has not won a match since defeating Real Salt Lake 1-0 on March 26. They have just three points in their last six matches.

NYCFC, which led the Eastern Conference in goals per match (2.11), had scored 14 goals in their last three matches coming in. NYC held an impressive 74 percent of the possession, but they couldn’t solve SKC’s defense.

Even with their high-scoring pattern, NYC has struggled at times this season to find the net. Saturday marked the fourth time in 10 matches this season the club was held scoreless.

NYC, which has scored 13 of its 19 goals in the second half this season, kept up the pressure in the second half, increasing their share of possession after intermission. The reigning MLS Cup champions had won three straight MLS regular-season matches against Sporting KC., four overall. But the two sides have not met since 2019.

NYCFC held 70 percent of the possession in the first half in the smaller pitch (the Citi Field playing surface is 70 yards x 110 yards, as opposed to 75 x 120 at SKC’s Children’s Mercy Park). But NYC was not able to mount much of an attack. They had 11 shots (three on goal) compared to five for Sporting, but Sporting’s two shots on goal had a much better chance of finding the back of the net.
