Giants snap skid with 13-run barrage over Cards

Wilmer Flores hit a grand slam and drove in six runs as the San Francisco Giants snapped their five-game losing streak with a 13-7 victory Saturday over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.

Mauricio Dubon and Darin Ruf hit two-run homers for the Giants, who had scored just five runs in their previous four games.

Giants starter Logan Webb (4-1) allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings. He struck out seven batters and walked two.

San Francisco first baseman Brandon Belt suffered an injury swinging his bat in the eighth inning and exited the game.

Cardinals starter Steven Matz (3-2) lasted just two innings while allowing eight runs on five hits (including three homers) and three walks. He struck out three.

Dylan Carlson hit a three-run homer and Paul DeJong drove in two runs with two hits to pace the Cardinals’ offense.

Yadier Molina extended his hitting streak to eight games and got his 1,000th career RBI. He became the eighth primary big league catcher with 2,000 hits and 1,000 RBIs.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 first-inning lead on Nolan Arenado’s RBI single. In the bottom of the inning Flores hit his grand slam to put the Giants up 4-1.

St. Louis cut the lead to 4-3 in the second inning on RBI singles by Molina and DeJong. But in the bottom of the inning Dubon and Ruf hit two-run homers to make it 8-3.

The Cardinals got one run back in the fourth inning on DeJong’s second RBI single.

Errors helped the Giants push their lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the inning. Ruf hit a potential double-play grounder to shortstop that DeJong muffed, then Molina dropped a foul pop-up that led to Flores’ sacrifice fly.

The Cardinals cut the lead to 9-7 in the seventh inning on Carlson’s three-run homer. But the Giants responded in the bottom of the inning with Thairo Estrada’s RBI double.

The Giants pushed their lead to 13-7 in the eighth inning with four walks, a hit batter and Estrada’s sacrifice fly.

Guardians pound Blue Jays to split DH nightcap

Franmil Reyes continued his hot hitting with a home run to support a strong outing by winning pitcher Triston McKenzie in the Cleveland Guardians’ 8-2 victory over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Blue Jays won the first game of the doubleheader, 8-3.

Cleveland has won six of its last eight games.

McKenzie (2-2) allowed hits to the each of the first three batters of the game and then settled in. He retired the final 11 hitters he faced.

The 6-5, 165-pound right-hander pitched six innings and allowed four hits, two runs and two walks. He struck out six batters.

He threw a season-high 102 pitches, 68 for strikes.

The Blue Jays had visions of a sweep when their first three batters reached safely. George Springer singled and came home on a double by Bo Bichette. Vladimir Guerrero then singled to center, moving Bichette to third.

Things could have been a lot worse if not for some good defense by the Guardians. Catcher Luke Maile picked off Guerrero at first base for the first out.

Second baseman Andres Gimenez ended the inning when he stabbed a one-hop liner from Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and threw him out at first from his knees.

The Guardians jumped on Toronto starter Ross Stripling (0-1) for three runs in the first. Amed Rosario singled and went to third on a double over the head of Teoscar Hernandez in right field by Jose Ramirez. Both runners scored on a double by Owen Miller and he came home on Gimenez’s two-out single.

Toronto got one back in the second when Matt Chapman led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout by Alejandro Kirk, then scored on an RBI double by Santiago Espinal — who was out at third trying to stretch it into a triple.

Cleveland extended its lead to 4-2 in the third when Reyes turned on a Striping fastball and drove it over the wall in left field. It was his third home run of the season and it traveled an estimated 391 feet.

After Toronto went to the bullpen, reliever David Phelps walked Rosario and Miller in the fifth. Reyes, working himself out of an early-season hitting slump, followed with a run-scoring single for a 5-2 advantage.

Oscar Mercado walked to lead off the sixth and came home on a double by Maile into the left-field corner, as the Guardians stretched their lead to 6-2. Maile was sacrificed to third and scored on Steven Kwan’s single up the middle.

A sacrifice fly by Mercado drove in Miller with the Guardians’ eighth run in the seventh inning.

Stripling pitched four innings and allowed five hits, four runs and one walk. He struck out three.

ChiSox down BoSox in 10 for fifth straight win

Jose Abreu and Luis Robert logged back-to-back RBI hits in the 10th inning as the Chicago White Sox came from behind for a 3-1 win over the host Boston Red Sox on Saturday.

Leury Garcia’s sacrifice fly erased the 1-0 lead that Boston held from the fifth inning on, and the White Sox went on to win their fifth consecutive game.

The Red Sox had a chance to walk off in the ninth after Jackie Bradley Jr. lined a one-out single to left and Christian Vazquez’s double into the left-center gap. Both, however, were stranded as Bobby Dalbec struck out looking and Trevor Story popped up.

Chicago wasted no time taking the lead in the 10th as Abreu ripped an RBI double to center and scored on Robert’s single.

Tim Anderson, Abreu, Robert and Garcia all had two hits each for Chicago. Reynaldo Lopez (4-0) won in relief and Liam Hendriks logged his ninth save.

Nick Pivetta turned in his best performance of the season for the Red Sox, striking out eight over six innings of five-hit, shutout ball.

Reliever Hansel Robles issued a costly leadoff walk to Jake Burger in the ninth. After Adam Engel doubled, Garcia hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Burger.

Matt Barnes (0-3) took the loss as Boston fell to 0-6 in extra innings.

Rafael Devers went 2-for-4 with the lone Boston RBI.

The Red Sox were held to two hits over the first four innings — both in the first — against Chicago starter Dylan Cease before doubling that total and scoring first in the fifth inning.

Devers delivered an opposite-field double off the Green Monster that scored Franchy Cordero, who hit a one-out single to left and moved ahead on Story’s walk.

Boston worked Cease’s pitch count to 101 pitches in five innings. The righty struck out eight and exited after allowing the single run on four hits and three walks.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora was ejected for arguing a called third strike on Story in the third inning. The second baseman was called out after watching a borderline pitch from Cease at the top of the strike zone.

LAFC get equalizer in 82nd minute to tie Union

0

The Philadelphia Union don’t typically give up many goals. They’ve logged four shutouts and lead Major League Soccer in fewest goals allowed this season.

But on Saturday night in Los Angeles, they allowed two goals and despite leading twice, had to settle for a 2-2 draw in a battle of the league’s Eastern and Western conference leaders.

Franco Escobar’s 82nd-minute goal tied the game as the Union (5-1-4, 19 points) were attempting to close out the contest. LAFC (7-1-2, 23 points) rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits with a pair of second-half goals.

Daniel Gazdag’s ninth-minute goal stunned Western Conference-leading Los Angeles FC early.

Gazdag was on the receiving end of a run toward the box from Julian Carranza, who sent the ball to Kai Wagner for a cross into the goal area. Gazdag was there to put it away.

LAFC had first-half scoring chances from forward Carlos Vela and teammate Cristian Arango, both with a shot that missed just wide of the net.

LAFC trailed until Kwadwo Opoku got free in the box and sent home a 56th-minute goal.

Carranza gave his team the lead again, with Gazdag assisting in the 67th minute.

LAFC held on to the league’s best record and point total despite the draw.

The team is undefeated in six home matches this season. It is also unbeaten in four MLS matches against the Union, with a win and three draws, and is the only team the Union have never defeated in its history.

Philadelphia converted on its only two shots on goal, while LAFC had six shots on target for the match. LAFC also dominated possession time and shot overall, with 22 to Philadelphia’s eight.

Andre Blake, the Union goalkeeper, had four saves. Off a Vela corner kick, Blake saved the first shot but couldn’t stop Escobar’s right-footed rebound.

Twins look to extend A’s 8-game losing streak

The Minnesota Twins will try to complete a three-game sweep Sunday afternoon when they host the Oakland Athletics in Minneapolis.

Minnesota is coming off a 1-0 win over Oakland on Saturday, which followed a 2-1 victory in the Friday series opener. The Twins have won 13 of their past 16 games to take early control of the AL Central.

Jorge Polanco will try to stay hot at the plate for the Twins. He finished a triple shy of the cycle on Saturday, and his 451-foot home run to center field marked the difference in the game.

As Minnesota surges, Oakland is heading in the opposite direction. The Athletics have lost eight games in a row and are seeking their first win since April 27 against the San Francisco Giants.

Twins right-hander Chris Paddack (1-2, 3.15 ERA) is scheduled to make his fifth start of the season.

Paddack is looking for back-to-back victories after a strong performance Monday in which he allowed one run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three.

In his first season with the Twins after being acquired from the San Diego Padres, Paddack credited his new pitching coach, Wes Johnson.

“The past few years I’ve been searching with a little doubt on the mound, not having that conviction and confidence every single pitch,” Paddack said. “Getting hit around a little bit, you can search up there on the mound.

“(Johnson) was like, ‘Look at what you did in ’19 before you had a curveball and a slider.’ He said, ‘You’re a better pitcher than you were in ’19.’ Our goal is to put it all together now.”

This will be Paddack’s third career start against Oakland. He is 1-1 with a 5.91 ERA, walking two and striking out 12 in 10 2/3 innings.

Athletics right-hander Daulton Jefferies (1-4, 4.81 ERA) is set to make his sixth start of the season and the eighth start of his career. The 26-year-old California native, making his first appearance against the Twins, already has set a career high with 24 1/3 innings pitched this season.

Jefferies earned a victory in his season debut April 10 against the Philadelphia Phillies but has been tagged with four losses in a row since then. In his most recent outing, he gave up six runs (all earned) on 11 hits in five innings against the Tampa Bay Rays when he walked none and struck out four.

“I actually felt pretty good,” Jefferies said. “I felt like I was attacking and staying competitive in the zone. But when I got ahead, I tried to make it even more nasty instead of just focusing on executing the pitch and being smooth. That’s what I need to work on.

“I’ve got to learn from the good performances and the bad ones. I try to take positives from every outing. I’m just trying to learn through every outing and make consistent starts for the ballclub.”

Nathan Cardoso’s goal enough to carry Quakes past Rapids

0

Nathan Cardoso scored in the 64th minute and JT Marcinkowski turned away five shots to earn his first clean sheet of the season as the San Jose Earthquakes held on for a 1-0 win over the visiting Colorado Rapids on Saturday in a Western Conference match.

San Jose (2-5-3, 9 points) produced its second victory in the three matches since interim head coach Alex Covelo took over after the firing of Matias Almeyda in mid-April.

The Earthquakes took the lead and got the only goal they would need when Cardoso used his right foot to volley a centering pass from Cristian Espinoza into the net while being held by the Rapids’ Auston Trusty during a corner kick.

Marcinkowski recorded the 11th shutout of his five-year MLS career.

Both teams nearly broke through in the late minutes of the scoreless first half. First, Colorado’s Max Alves da Silva had his left-footed shot from inside the box stopped by Marcinkowski in the 42nd minute, one of three saves by the San Jose goalkeeper in the first 45-plus minutes.

The Earthquakes’ Cade Cowell blistered a right-footed shot from outside the box in the 44th minute that hit the right post and bounded away.

Colorado made a serious bid for the equalizer in the 70th minute as Gyasi Zardes had an opening at the left post after a pass from Michael Barrios but was turned away by a save from William Yarbrough (three saves).

Colorado (3-4-3, 12 points) went without a victory for the sixth time in its last seven matches, going 1-3-3 in that stretch, and was shut out for the second time in its past three outings.

The Rapids had five shots on goal but was denied each time by Marcinkowski. Colorado played without leading scorer Diego Rubio, who missed the game after accumulating two yellow cards in the Rapids’ win against Portland on April 30.

Mets, Phils set for twin bill following rainouts

After the New York Mets poured in ninth-inning runs Thursday, the skies opened in Philadelphia, giving them 48 extra hours to celebrate one of their most improbable victories in franchise history.

Both Friday and Saturday games against the host Philadelphia Phillies were rained out, with one of the games rescheduled for Sunday as part of a single-admission doubleheader (starting at 12:35 p.m. ET). The other game will be made up Aug. 20 as part of a split-admission doubleheader.

The Mets won 8-7 in spectacular fashion on Thursday after scoring seven runs in the ninth inning. Over the past 25 seasons, they had trailed by at least six runs entering the ninth 330 times without a successful rally.

“I’m an optimist and I just keep going until they blow the whistle,” said Brandon Nimmo, who tied the game at 7 with a two-run single. “When it’s my turn, I give everything I got. It seems every guy on this team has the same mentality.”

Francisco Lindor said that the Mets simply refused to give up.

“I don’t think it was shock, I think it was just happiness,” Lindor said. “It’s like, ‘Yes, we’re doing it!’ We all believed it, but it’s just like, ‘It’s happening, it’s happening.’ You don’t have too many nights like that.”

The Mets are expected to send Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt to the mound for Sunday’s two games.

Scherzer (4-0, 2.61 ERA) is 16-4 with a 2.60 ERA in 27 career starts against the Phillies. In Scherzer’s most recent outing against the Phillies last Sunday, he gave up five hits and four runs in six innings, yet he and the Mets still won the game, 10-6.

He’s won 15 consecutive decisions, and that marked the 18th consecutive time he has taken the ball for a regular-season game (with three different teams) and his team has won, dating back to July 8 last season when he was with the Nationals.

Bassitt (3-2, 2.61 ERA) has never faced the Phillies.

The Phillies will attempt to erase the memory of Thursday’s maddening loss, which extended their current losing streak to four games. Philadelphia lost on the road to the Mets last Sunday and were swept in a two-game series by the Texas Rangers.

“You gotta bounce back,” Phillies manager Joe Girardi said. “This is as tough as it gets. You’re going to have these during the course of the year. And you’ve got to find a way to turn it around.”

After rallying to reach .500, the four consecutive losses have dropped the Phillies to 11-15.

“There’s a lot of fight in that room,” Girardi said. “They’ll come out fighting.”

There’s no time to pout in a 162-game regular season … unless perhaps you get a couple of rainouts to let it stew a bit.

“It sucks,” Kyle Schwarber said after the loss. “But what are you going to do? It’s over with. Move on tomorrow. You want to win a game, right? You always want to win a game every single day. Like, when we got no-hit, it’s just a loss. Tonight’s a loss. You’ve got to move onto the next day.”

The Phillies are expected to send Kyle Gibson and Zach Eflin to the mound.

Gibson (2-1, 2.93 ERA) is 1-3 with a 4.15 ERA in six career starts against the Mets. Eflin (1-2, 4.50 ERA) holds a 3-5 record with a 5.03 ERA in 14 career starts against the Mets.

Nick Castellanos is likely to play in at least one of the games after being hit by Adonis Medina on the hand in the sixth inning Thursday.

“X-ray’s were clean,” Castellanos said. “I just wanted to see a clean X-ray. It’s the wrist I broke last year, so I’m not a stranger to getting hit in the hand area.”

Didi Gregorius, however, was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a sprained left knee; Bryson Stott was recalled.

FC Dallas records victory at home over Sounders

0

Jesus Ferreira and Paul Arriola had goals in the second half and that was all FC Dallas needed in a 2-0 win over the weary Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday in a Western Conference match in Frisco, Texas.

The win was the fifth straight at home for Dallas (5-1-4, 19 points), which extended its unbeaten streak to eight matches. Dallas has not lost at home this year and has four draws on the road.

Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes did not have to make a save in recording his fourth clean sheet of the season.

The Sounders (2-5-1, 7 points) fielded a team of mostly reserves after playing, and beating, Pumas on aggregate on Wednesday to become the first MLS team in the modern era to become Concacaf champions. Seattle did not have a shot on goal in Saturday’s match.

Both teams had excellent chances to score in the first half, but neither found the net nor had a shot that forced a save.

Seattle’s best chance came as Leo Chu was fed for a breakaway in the 24th minute and had a one-on-one opportunity against Dallas goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland but missed wide left when Cleveland came way off his line to challenge.

In the 34th minute Arriola’s corner kick was headed across the goal mouth by Matt Hedges but Paxton Pomykal, who was open at the back post, could not get his foot on the ball.

Ferreira’s goal in the 65th minute ended the scoreless stalemate. Emmanuel Twumasi started the scoring play with a crossing pass from the right corner of the box, with Ferreira open enough to have the time to steady the ball before beating Cleveland to the bottom right corner.

Arriola’s doubled the lead in the 88th minute, volleying home a spot-on crossing pass from Eulanio Gomes (Nanu) to ice the match and send the Sounders to their second straight MLS loss.

Dallas didn’t have a shot on target until the second half, but peppered Cleveland over the final 45 minutes and stoppage time. FCD produced 21 shots overall and seven on goal.

FC Cincinnati clips Minnesota United with stoppage time goal

0

Brandon Vazquez scored in the third minute of stoppage time to give visiting FC Cincinnati a 1-0 victory over Minnesota United on Saturday night in Saint Paul, Minn.

Vazquez redirected a crossing pass by Calvin Harris from the right side of the box with his left foot into the middle of the net for the winner. FC Cincinnati (5-5-1, 16 points) won their third consecutive game for the first time in franchise history.

Roman Celentano made five saves to pick up his second shutout of the season.

Dayne St. Clair finished with five saves for Minnesota United (4-4-2, 14 points), who lost their second straight game.

Minnesota had the edge in possession in a scoreless first half but it was FC Cincinnati that had the better scoring chances.

St. Clair had to make a highlight-reel save on Luciano Acosta in the 16th minute, making an outstretched finger-tip save on Acosta’s right-footed shot from the center of the box.

Two minutes later, Vazquez took a through pass from Acosta and fired a left-footed shot from the left side of the box that bounced straight out off the far post.

Minnesota’s best chance came in the 28th minute. Bongokuhle Hlongwane took a through pass from Emanuel Reynoso near the left edge of the six-yard box but Celentano blocked his sharp-angle try.

St. Clair had to come up with another big save just before halftime when he came out and made a point-blank leg save on a shot from the center of the box by Dominique Badji.

Reynoso had two good scoring chances in the second half, the first on a curling left-footed shot from the right corner of the box that just grazed the crossbar in the 56th minute. Seventeen minutes later, Reynoso fired a free kick from just outside the box that Celentano caught.

Rhyne Howard powers Dream past Wings, 66-59

Rookie Rhyne Howard scored a team-high 16 points and Monique Billings had 14 rebounds in the Atlanta Dream’s 66-59 win Saturday over the host Dallas Wings in the season opener for both teams.

Howard, the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, also recorded four assists, four blocked shots and two steals.

Cheyenne Parker had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Nia Coffey finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, and Erica Wheeler had 11 points for Atlanta.

Dallas reserve Marina Mabrey had 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, 3 of 7 from 3-point range.

Mabrey’s 3-pointer with 5:21 left was part of a 9-0 run that cut Atlanta’s lead to 61-55. Mabrey made a layup with 2:32 remaining that narrowed the lead to 63-59.

Dallas did not score thereafter and Wheeler’s 3-pointer with 1:47 left closed the scoring.

Howard started strong with eight points, three assists, two rebounds, a steal, a block and no turnovers after the first quarter. She scored or assisted on 15 of the Dream’s 29 points in the quarter.

After leading 29-11 going into the second quarter, the Dream took their biggest lead of the game, 33-13, with 7:40 remaining until halftime.

Dallas then went on a 15-0 run fueled by Mabrey’s 10 points, including two 3-pointers, to cut the lead to 33-28 with 3:06 remaining in the half.

The Dream were 0-for-9 from the field with three turnovers in that stretch before Parker made a driving layup to give Atlanta a 35-28 lead.

Dallas outscored Atlanta 24-10 in the second quarter and trailed 39-35 at halftime.

Howard had only two points in the second quarter while Mabrey had 12 points.

Mabrey led the Wings with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, 2 of 4 from 3-point range, in the first half.

Dallas cut the lead to 41-39 with 7:04 left in the third quarter but Howard made two 3-pointers in a 10-1 run.

Her second 3-pointer in that stretch put Atlanta ahead 51-40 with 4:22 left in the third quarter.
