Tyler Perry’s ‘A Madea Homecoming’ released on Netflix, fastest and funniest sequel to date

0

Tyler Perry never gets tired of playing Madea and if you never get tired of watching him, then the newest Madea film “A Madea Homecoming” is currently streaming on Netflix. The 70+ years old (age never mentioned in any of the movies so far) continues to entertain with her wit and all round craziness. The newest movie has a twist as a crossover character “Mrs. Brown” the Irish matriarch of “Mrs Brown’s Boys” also entertains as she clashes with the irascible Madea, during a family get together.

In 2019, Tyler Perry had hinted that “A Madea Family Funeral” would be his last reprisal of the role of Madea. However, as the pandemic raged, he felt that there was a need for another funny, yet heartwarming movie with the matriarch. Some experts also say that he would have continued playing her, as he identifies a lot with both her inner angels and demons and considers them as his own.

Seventeen years ago Madea appeared for the first time in the first Tyler Perry movie called the “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.” Since then her character has grown to the status of a figure of folklore. Other cast members include actors who have been reprising their roles in the earlier movies as well. Expect to see Cassi Davis-Patton, David Mann, Tamela Mann and more.

“A Madea Homecoming” follows the extended family as they get together for the college graduation of Madea’s great grandson. As the dramas and secrets spill out as usual, Madea is determined to ensure that the celebrations move forward without any hitch.

Fans of the previous 11 Madea movies are expected to enjoy this one as well as it has the usual soap opera twists, laced with humor and delivered in Tyler Perry style. The combination of two plus sized woman characters played by men has been an inherently popular theme and both Madea and Mrs. Brown, played by Brendan O’Carroll entertain their fans and showcase their feisty similarities despite apparently belonging to two diverse cultures–Black and Irish.

How have the new CDC Covid guidelines impacted travel and more

0

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) eased mask recommendations for large swaths of the country. This could affect more than 70 percent of Americans as it factors in case numbers which are falling or have already fallen in most parts of the nation. The guidelines are based on hospital capacity as well as hospitalizations in different parts of the country and areas are marked as low, medium or high level.

The CDC urges people with Covid symptoms as well as those who have tested positive to continue to wear masks. It also recommends that people who have been exposed to those who have Covid should wear a mask. It also says that people who do not fall under the categories can also continue wearing masks if they wish to do so, if it makes them feel more comfortable.

Although there has been a broad relaxation in wearing masks at many indoor places, masks are still essential at public places involving transport. Wearing a mask in planes, trains, buses and other means of public transportation has been mandated through March 18. Federal officials have not as yet commented on whether the mask mandate would be extended.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said that the new community guidelines were not intended for travel. She said that they would revisit the mask guidelines for public transportation “in the weeks ahead.”

Lisa Farbstein, who is the Transportation Security Administration spokesperson told the Washington Post that the TSA would “continue to assess the duration of the requirement in consultation with the CDC.”

In a statement, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA described an airplane as a “unique but controlled environment for everyone’s safety.” The statement said that masks were included in a “layered approach to safety and security.”

As of Friday, the following areas are “low level”

Puerto Rico
New York City
Hawaii
Washington D.C.
Seattle
Chicago
Denver
Atlanta.

However, it must be noted that levels can change. Officials said that they wanted to give people a break from wearing masks as the virus had slowed down. However, recommendations could change if there are future surges or new variants of the coronavirus emerge.

Ukraine wants Cook to stop Apple devices sales and block its App Store in Russia

0

As Russia pounded the Ukraine, many Western countries including the U.S. and Europe passed tough sanctions on several Russian companies. By Friday, social media company Meta stopped monetization on its Facebook and Instagram app by top Russian media companies. Twitter is also monitoring the information flow on its app and Elon Musk has offered Starlink internet connectivity to Ukraine, after being asked for it by Mykhailo Fedorov. Now, the country is asking private tech such as Apple to do its part.

On Friday, Mykhailo Fedorov, who is the Ukrainian Minister of digital transformation, posted on Twitter that he had asked Tim Cook, CEO of Apple to block its App Store for Russian citizens and to stop the sale of Apple devices and products for users in Russia.

Fedorov, who is also the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine said that such actions from Apple would motivate the youth and active population in Russia to “proactively stop the disgraceful military aggression.”

Apple plays a major role in the smartphone category in Russia. It is the third most popular brand in the country with a 15 percent market share while Xiaomi has 26 percent and Samsung has the largest share at 34 percent.

On February 25, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that he was “deeply concerned” about the happenings in Ukraine and that their teams “will be supporting local humanitarian efforts.” He said that he was thinking of the people who were “in harm’s way” and joined all those who were calling for peace.

The Apple App store is operating in Russia. However, Apple Pay is not working as the U.S. government has sanctioned banks. Earlier, Business Insider reported that Russia’s central bank said that customers of banks that have been hit by sanctions have not been able to use both Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Phil Mickelson loses several corporate sponsorships over remarks on Saudi golf league

0

On Saturday, Phil Mickelson and his foundation The Mickelson Foundation have been removed from The American Express tour event in La Quinta, California as hosts, according to a report by the Desert Sun, in Palm Springs, California. They have hosted the PGA Tour since 2019. This is the latest of the corporate sponsorship losses after the professional golfer recently passed comments on the PGA Tour as well as the new rival golf league being reportedly backed by the Saudi government and British golfer Greg Norman’s LIV Golf Investments.

Earlier, Mickelson was quoted saying the following to golf writer Alan Shipnuck about the Saudi group behind the new league. Mickelson said that they were “scary mother f*****s to get involved with.” He added, “We know they killed (Washington Post columnist Jamal) Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights, They execute people for being gay.” He also told Shipnuck, “Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.”

On Tuesday, Mickelson acknowledged that his statements were “reckless” but also said that they were not meant to be shared. He apologized to Greg Norman of LIV Golf Investments for any of his remarks that were taken out of context and said that they were visionaries, who wanted to make golf better, just like he did.

He did not mention anything about his comments on the PGA Tour or Commissioner Jay Monahan. However, he said that he “desperately needs” time away so that he could get his priorities in order.

Other sponsors who have dropped Mickelson or will drop him in March, after his sponsorship deals lapse include the following:

Callaway Golf
Workday
KPMG
Amstel Light.

We had reported earlier in February that the top golfers in the nation had officially released statements that they intended to remain with the PGA, despite being offered huge sums of money to join, from the new league called the Super Golf League. It was proposed by Greg Norman’s LIV Investments, which is reportedly backed by the Saudi government.

The Washington Post had also reported that the investment firm was in talks with the Trump Organization to use its golf courses in Florida and New Jersey. However, neither the Trump Organization nor LIV Investments were willing to confirm the news, since.

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter ban Russian media ads, effectively removing monetization

0

On Friday, Meta Platform Inc. which owns Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram said that it was blocking Russian state owned media from its social media platforms. As the state media will not be able to run advertisements, they will lose a monetary source of income as well as will be effectively blocked from billions who log on daily to apps in the Meta network.

Nathaniel Gleicher, who is the head of security policy at Facebook, posted on Twitter on Saturday that they were “prohibiting Russian state media from running ads or monetizing” on their platforms, throughout the world. The decision was made as a response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

He also said that they have launched a new feature in Ukraine. This allows people to lock their profile and provides an extra layer of privacy and security so that it will add protection the people who are “on our platform.”

Earlier on Friday, Nick Clegg said that the Russian authorities had ordered Meta to stop labeling and fact checking posts that were uploaded by four Russian state-owned media companies. The vice president of global affairs said that they “refused” to do so. So, Meta services were being restricted. There is no information available about how the official restrictions will affect Meta platforms.

After the January 6 riot, social media platforms have started limiting the spread of misleading information as well as false propaganda, to a great extent. Facebook created a “Special Operations Center” so that it could fact check the information emerging from the conflict in Ukraine. They have hired experts who include native speakers in order to closely monitor the situation and to act in the shortest possible time. This has led to a tighter grip on social media by the Kremlin as it cannot control the narrative as it continues pounding Ukraine.

On Friday, Twitter had also said that they were temporarily stopping all advertisements in both Ukraine and Russia so that these ads do not detract from the elevation of “critical public safety information.”

On Saturday Twitter said that it was adding restrictions for some people in Russia but it was also “working to keep” its service “safe and accessible.”

Elon Musk confirms SpaceX’s Starlink service available in Ukraine and support for Zelenskyy

0

Late Saturday night, Elon Musk CEO of SpaceX tweeted that Starlink service was available in Ukraine and that “more terminals” were “en route.” Earlier on Saturday, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine had directly appealed to Musk to help his country as communications links were being destroyed by missiles from Russia, who has mounted an invasion against Ukraine.

Mykhailo Fedorov, who is the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine told Musk that while he tried to “colonize Mars–Russia try to occupy Ukraine.” He also said that that while Musk’s rockets landed successfully from space, the civilians in his country were being attacked by Russian rockets.

The official, who is also the minister of digital transformation, continued his post asking Musk to provide the country with Starlink stations and “to address sane Russians to stand.”

On Thursday, monitoring group NetBlocks said that they had tracked network disruptions across Ukraine and that the capital city Kyiv had also been affected with internet disruptions. As missiles continued to pound the country, several services including telecommunications services have been affected and this is where a service like Starlink can make a difference.

Starlink provides internet services to parts of the world that remain unconnected to broadband providers. Most of these areas are generally rural or desolate with large stretches of land making it impractical for broadband providers to lay cables or to provide Wifi internet connectivity.

Starlink uses a network of over 2,000 satellites in low Earth orbit to beam down the internet throughout the world. The service is accessed using a satellite dish that is placed on a person’s property. SpaceX has already put in orbit thousands of satellites as well as ground stations, to connect remote and other regions in the planet. On Friday, Spacex launched 50 new satellites in orbit.

Starlink terminals have helped to restore communications earlier this year in Tonga when there was a massive volcanic eruption and tsunami in January. Musk and SpaceX sent 50 Starlink terminals that provided free internet access to remote villages that had been cut off as a result of the natural disaster. The terminals helped restore communications in these remote areas, according to a report by Reuters.

When Jeff Zucker, the former president of CNN stepped down a few weeks ago, it created a huge furore especially among the staff, who know the major role he played in keeping the cable news network on the top, despite various challenges. Now, people familiar with the matter say that Chris Licht, who is a veteran TV news executive, will the new president at the network. The news was first reported by Puck.

David Zaslav, who is the CEO of Disney, is expected to officially name Chris Licht, after the upcoming merger with Warner Media takes place, in the following weeks. Licht is expected be named as the head of news for Warner Bros. This could be a new role that involves assuming leadership of CNN as well as other international assets. However, he is not expected to be in charge of Sports, as Zucker was.

Officially, Jeff Zucker left CNN because he had failed to disclose an affair that he was having with a colleague, Allison Gollust. Staff said that the affair was an open secret and a point to be noted is that both Jeff Zucker and the woman he was in a relationship with are divorced. Unofficially, one of Disney’s largest shareholders allegedly wanted Zucker to leave CNN.

Chris Licht has been the executive producer of Morning Joe on MSNBC as well as CBS This Morning. He is currently the lead behind the popular show “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” His contract with CBS is expected to expire in April. However, a special meeting of Disney shareholders has been scheduled for March 11 and his name is expected to be put forward by Discovery chief David Zaslav.

Chris Licht was born in Switzerland. He has more than 20 years of experience in television news. He is known to build friendly relationships with talent as well as to encourage anchors. Jeff Zucker had a similar relationship with staff at CNN and Licht is expected to do the same, which is good for the network as it emerges from the sudden drastic changes in staff as well as a new merger with Disney.

Ketanji Brown Jackson, Biden’s nominee could be first Black Woman Supreme Court Judge

0

On Friday, President Biden fulfilled another nomination promise by recommending the name of Ketanji Brown Jackson for the post of Justice of the Supreme Court. This is a formal, historic nomination as she could become the first Black, woman judge in the highest court of the nation. Biden has chosen a qualified woman who is expected to get some bipartisan support, although it might not be necessary.

The White House released a statement on February 25, 2022 that described Judge Jackson as “one of the nation’s brightest legal minds.” It said that President Biden was looking for a nominee who would be similar to Justice Breyer who was described as wise and pragmatic and who also had a deep understanding of the Constitution.

The statement also included her broad experience as
a federal appellate judge
a federal district court judge
a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission
an attorney in private practice
a federal public defender.

It also mentioned that Judge Jackson is currently serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. It must be noted that she received bipartisan support for this nomination as well as for earlier ones.

Only five women have sat in the Supreme Court in the long history of the nation. They include
Sandra Day O’Connor
Ruth Bader Ginsberg
Sonia Sotomayor
Elena Kagan
Amy Coney Barrett.

Only two Black men–Thursgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas have sat on the bench. If Ketanji Brown Jackson is nominated by the Senate to serve as a Supreme Court Judge, she will be the first Black woman, third Black person and sixth woman to be appointed to the highest court of the nation in over two centuries.

Senate Democratic leaders hope to confirm Justice Jackson to the Supreme Court by mid-April. She has not only served under Justice Stephen Breyer but was also the front-runner to replace him after he announced his resignation.

Retired Police Captain Reeves who shot moviegoer acquitted of murder charges

Retired police captain Curtis Reeves has been acquitted by a Florida jury. In 2014, he was accused of second degree murder and aggravated battery. Reeves shot Chad Oulson during an altercation at a Wesley Chapel movie theater, outside Tampa, in Florida.

When 43-year old Chad Oulson was out on a movie date with his wife, he sent a text message during the previews for “Lone Survivor.” The message was sent to his young daughter’s babysitter. This led to an argument with Reeves, who asked Oulson to put his phone away.

Oulson reportedly grabbed and threw a bag of popcorn on Reeves. Reeves took put a handgun and shot at Oulson and his wife was injured in the hand during the shooting. However, the bullet hit Oulson’s chest and a nurse who was also at the theater conducted CPR. He died at the hospital.

The retired police officer, who was 71, told the authorities that he had been “in fear of being attacked.” His attorneys mounted a self defense argument and said that Oulson threw a cellphone on his head. They also said that he was aggressively leaning over a chair towards the retired officer.

Prosecutors argued that popcorn was not a weapon. They also said that witnesses did not see Oulson throwing a cellphone at Reeves.

The case dragged on for almost eight years due to reasons such as several motions, pre-trial hearings as well as the pandemic as Covid-19 disrupted the normal functioning of the entire nation.

Friday evening, the jury began their deliberations after a nine-day trial. They pronounced Curtis Reeves not guilty and acquitted the officer.

The state prosecutor mounted a strong defense arguing that Reeves had killed a human being next to his wife for no reason at all. As expected, Oulson’ s wife is shattered by the jury verdict.

Nike Says No To Footlocker and Many Retail Stores

0

Nike had decided a long time ago that it would drop third party vendors from selling its product online and made a partnership with eBay to sell only under the Nike store brand on the eBay marketplace.

In a stunning move, Nike decides to drop its merchandise out of many retail stores. Nike wants to go direct to consumer. The reason, better profit margins than they would sell to wholesalers. The Nike brand is also concerned about how its products are displayed and it seeks more control over its own merchandise and marketing.

They will continue to offer customers merchandise to purchase in their brick-and-mortar stores and in their online marketplace. They will also drop all  most third-party relationships with online venues as well such as retailers like Footlocker.  Footlocker, which is the largest vender for  Nike  has announced that it will take a deep dive in profits due to Nike’s decision to take the merchandise out of the stores. This will also be a big blow to other large retailers that carry the Nike brand, and it is likely profits will plummet for those businesses as well.

Other large brands like Adidas and Under Armour are also pulling back from third party resellers so they can furthermore protect their brand and increase profit margins.
