Is there a pill that can help deal with long COVID?

0

Although the final wave of COVID-19 is almost crashing on the shore as the omicron variant has been milder than others, there are a minority of people who are suffering from what is termed as long COVID. They continue to experience symptoms that affect their daily lives. So, a possible source of alleviation of symptoms has been found by using antihistamine pills as they offer a sense of relief.

People with long COVID suffer from a variety of symptoms that include brain fog, joint pain as well as fatigue. The symptoms can linger for a long time. They may be mild or severe and can continue for weeks disrupting normal routines.

The effect of antihistamines on long term symptoms was a matter of serendipity. Two health care workers, who remain unidentified, had taken over the counter (OTC) antihistamines to treat other conditions.

Jane Doe A took the pill as she had an allergic reaction to dairy after eating cheese. She had been suffering from chest pain as well as headaches. She had a rash and bruises. She took an antihistamine pill and her fatigue disappeared, almost totally. When it reappeared 72 hours later, she took another pill and gained relief, once again.

Following this, her doctor prescribed antihistamines and she regained about 90 percent of her functions at pre-COVID levels. She is reportedly doing well, nine months since.

Jane Doe B took the allergy pill as it was her usual medication. The next morning she found that her cognitive skills had improved and she also felt less fatigue. She has reportedly recovered 95 percent of her daily functions to pre-COVID levels.

According to the Daily Mail, report author Melissa Pinto, associate professor of nursing at UC Irvine said there was no cure, as yet for long COVID. She added that it was good that over the counter medicines offered hope and patients should take reports like theirs to providers so that they could “help create a regimen that worked.”

She also said that broad based trials on the efficacy of antihistamines should be conducted. She added that dosage schedules for clinical practice guidelines should also be developed.

Walmart updates mask policy for vaccinated as per state mandate

0

The largest employer in the nation, Walmart is giving its vaccinated employees a break by dropping mask mandates in states which have relaxed mask mandates. Several states from the east coast to the west coast are in the process of or have already changed mask wearing policies. The recent variant, the omicron has been milder than all other variants and cases of COVID-19 due to this variant are also declining, leading to the policy change.

Walmart has also brought in other changes in policy, as first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Some of the changes include the slowdown of daily health screenings unless required by states such as New York, California and Virginia.

Walmart is also changing its sick leave policy. Associates had been given extra paid time, beyond sick leave. This policy had been adopted especially for the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be dropped unless it is mandated by the local government.

The mask relaxation policy will only apply to those who have been vaccinated. Unvaccinated employees have to continue to wear masks. Those who work in clinical care settings, including pharmacies will have to continue wearing masks.

Walmart tries it best to balance state policies with employee wellbeing. Last spring, the big box retailer had relaxed its mask policy. However, when COVID-19 cases surged in July due to the delta variant of the coronavirus, the retailer introduced the mask policy, once again.

Now that the omicron variant is found to cause milder infections among those who are vaccinated and the number of cases are also falling across states in the nation though at different levels, Walmart has decided to change its policy on masking. One point to be noted is that although states are relaxing mask mandates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not changed its recommendations on the use of masks, as yet.

Rapper Blueface arrested in Hollywood, faces felony for gun possession

In the early hours of Saturday morning, police arrested rapper Blueface on several charges, the major one being possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle. Police sources told TMZ that the rapper was driving with a few people at around 3.15 a.m. The rapper, who name is Johnathan Jamall Porter, was stopped by the police at the intersection of Sunset and Vine, the heart of Hollywood.

He was initially pulled over by the cops for driving a car with an expired registration. As they ran a computer check, they found that his license had been suspended. They asked him to exit from the vehicle. As they searched the vehicle, they found a concealed firearm in the vehicle.

Blueface was then arrested. However, the others in the car were not arrested. The gun was loaded and unregistered and found in the center console of the vehicle. This is a felony charge and the rapper could face up to three years in prison.

The 25-year old rapper, popular for his hit track Thotiana, has been in trouble before. Last November, in an incident in San Fernando Valley he was responsible for beating up a nightclub bouncer. The incident was caught on camera.

The rapper and three other people with him kicked and punched the doorman so badly that he needed stitches. They were charged with two felonies, one of which was for assault and the other was for robbery.

Two months later, Blueface and his manager Wack100 asked the police to come to their home to remove Chrisean Rock from the premises, after Rock and Wack were arguing on issues including whether she belonged in the house and whether he was her manager.

In December 2020, Rock had signed with Blueface records. In the preceding months, she had starred in the reality show by Blueface called Blue Girls Club.

The talented rapper is not new to controversy but Blueface’s latest arrest might have far reaching consequences including a prison term, which he has avoided so far; as he has been caught possessing a loaded, unregistered firearm.

Metaverse hiring picks up in the universe, Meta, Nike, Disney and more are hiring

0

Life might soon shift to the metaverse, in full speed, but hiring for the virtual world is still happening in the real world. Meta (formerly Facebook) has hired the largest number of people but other companies have also started offering careers related to the metaverse. It is called the next best thing by some experts as it is emerging as a community with its own economy.

Meta, formerly Facebook, has been at the forefront of developing the metaverse. The social media giant has said that it would hire 10,000 people in Europe to help build the metaverse. This would happen in the next five years.

Meta’s website has 13 job listings for the metaverse as of Wednesday. Now, other companies have also started listing metaverse specific jobs. In two weeks, Nike has already posted five jobs for the virtual world. The jobs are based in its headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. Disney has also recently posted a job opening in business development in the virtual world.

Balenciaga, a luxury fashion brand, was looking for a meta business coordinator in December, while Gucci had listed for a “Web3 manager” to be based in Milan. Web3 is used to describe a version of the internet with blockchain technology. This technology powers some of the metaverse.

Even the NFL seems to be joining in as it is looking for a “senior manager, content partnerships.” The job description includes identifying opportunities in emerging technology sectors. These sectors include non fungible tokens NFTs, crypto projects and AR/VR strategy–Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality. These sectors are the building blocks of the metaverse.

The metaverse has seen huge investments as virtual real estate is being grabbed by a whole list of global companies who deal in entertainment, fast food, clothes, shoes, gaming and more.

U.S. embassy staff to leave Ukraine as tensions rise with Russia

0

On Saturday, the United States ordered the evacuation of its embassy staff from Kyiv. This move comes as there have been no conclusive talks between the U.S., Ukraine and European leaders with Russia, as yet.
In a travel advisory, the Department of State said that it had “ordered the departure of most U.S. direct hire employees from Embassy Kyiv.” It also said that there was a perceived “threat of Russian military action.”

The statement added that a small consular presence would be maintained in “Lviv, Ukraine” for handling emergencies. This embassy is in Western Ukraine, near the border with Poland and probably further away from invasion routes that might be taken by Russia. However, routine consular work such as providing passports, visas and more would be suspended.

Other Western allies including Great Britain have asked their citizens to leave Ukraine. The U.S. also requested members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s (OSCE) members to leave the region by February 15. The OSCE members are more than 40 in number.

On Saturday, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry said that they were also evacuating their staff. The ministry said that it would “optimize” its number of staff as there were fears of “provocation.”

Although officials believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not made a final decision, as yet, on a possible invasion, the Biden administration said that there was a “distinct possibility” that Ukraine could be invaded before February 20, which is the end of the Winter Olympics currently being held in China.

President Biden is expected to speak with his counterpart President Putin, on Saturday. The last time these two leaders of the world spoke was on December 30.

Although Russia remains noncommittal about an invasion, the buildup of troops as well as military exercises in the region continue. Ukraine is also conducting its own drills as Russia is doing so. War games are on in the region.

James Webb telescope takes first selfie: NASA shares photographs

0

Almost all of us will remain unimpressed by the “selfies” taken by the James Webb telescope as they look blurred and unimaginative, but NASA scientists and engineers are super excited as this shows that the telescope is functioning along expected lines. We like to see funny, pretty or beautiful selfies but the engineers prefer functional ones as they reinforce the idea that the telescope will take better pictures after its 18 segments of the main mirror are aligned.

On Friday, the U.S. space agency unveiled a “selfie” which was a pinnacle moment for all the space agencies who collaborated on this mammoth project. The selfie portrayed the observatory’s 21.3-foot wide primary mirror as well as a mosaic that showed multiple images of a nondescript star that was used to align the 18 segments in the main mirror of the telescope. This is one small step for the telescope after 48 days since it was launched on December 25, but could be a giant leap forward as NASA staff align its mirrors further.

NASA has begun adjust its 18 hexagonal segments carefully so that they tilt at a correct angle in order to be available to align multiple reflections of a target star into a single beam of light, similar to a one-piece mirror.

On January 25, exactly a month after its Christmas day launch, the James Webb telescope was in its operational orbit around Lagrange Point 2. This point is in the region called deep space. It will circle the sun in tandem with the earth, so that it will minimize the amount of fuel used to remain on station.

Now, the alignment process is underway so that the telescope can beam the first among many more precise images by June. This is an “Eureka” moment for NASA scientists as the James Webb telescope cost $10 billion. It is on an epic mission to study the early universe. It is designed to see light and beam images back to earth from the earliest galaxies.

Ice T’s wife model Coco Austin shares pictures of shoe closet worth a million dollars

0

We have heard of a million dollar smile, the million dollar man but not of a million dollar shoe closet until Coco Austin shared pictures of her shoes worth this amount on Instagram. The model treated her fans to a tour of her shoe closet, on Instagram. Comments and questions poured in.

Coco Austin recorded various angles of the closet. She showed off her collection of sneakers, sandals, boots, and high heels.

As expected the shoes were available in a wide range of colors, styles and prices. They included normal boots from Uggs, track shoes, a $1000 shoe from Yves Saint Laurent (YSL), from Gucci as well as an entire section of shoes from Christian Louboutin, with iconic red heels.

In the audio, she said that people ask her if the collection wasn’t “too much” and she answered that it was “never enough” and it would “never be enough.”

In her caption the model indicated that it was a collection of “…over 20 years worth.” She said different people collected different items such as baseball cards, watches, comic books and more. She collects shoes.

Fans went wild with their questions. One asked her if she still wore all of them and she answered that she had “worn every pair.” Another one hoped that her daughter Chanel grew up to have the same size feet, so she could share them in future. This got an affirmative response from Austin who replied, “i’m hoping too.”

Austin also said that she stopped counting the number of shoes she owned and said that she may have about 1000 pairs and that only “two” pairs were duplicates.

The 42- year old burlesque dancer Coco Austin, who began her career as an 18-year swim wear model, is married to 63-year old rapper turned actor Ice T. They got married in 2005, although they have been together since 2002. They share a child Chanel.

Thousands of car renters accused of theft by Hertz, hundreds file suits for wrongful arrest

0

Hertz, a major car rental service accuses thousands of customers of car theft, every year. Many of these accusations have been wrong and more than 200 people have alleged that they have been wrongly arrested. They have filed lawsuits for embarrassment as well as emotional distress. The company has filed for bankruptcy. A Delaware bankruptcy court judge has therefore ordered the company to release the data to the public. Earlier, this data was sealed.

A CBS News investigation had reported that customers have been falsely arrested. So, the legal team of the outlet filed a formal objection to the attempt by Hertz to keep its theft reports and other statistics under seal, as they declared bankruptcy in 2020. Now, in February 2022 these reports will be made public, according to the judge’s decision, on Wednesday.

The judge’s order will ensure that the car rental company discloses the number of erroneous complaints made by them which is at the heart of the lawsuits brought about by people who alleged that were wrongfully arrested. Some of them were even put in jail due to vehicle theft complaints against them.

The company is facing 230 claims in bankruptcy court by people who alleged that they have been wrongly arrested for stealing rental cars. The number of false arrests due to errors have not been revealed by the company but is included in the order by the judge.

Hertz downplayed the data and told the outlet in a statement that only 0.014 percent fall into the category of reporting as thefts to the authorities and this was done after the company made “exhaustive attempts to reach the customer.” The veracity of this percentage can be verified after the data will be made public.

Bloomberg reported that Hertz had filed almost 8.000 theft reports annually during a certain four-year period. Since the files are not as yet in the public domain, the number of auto thefts among these report remains unknown, as yet.

Hugh Jackman impresses one and all in and as ‘The Music Man’ on Broadway

0

Hugh Jackman is really into his role as Harold Hill in “The Music Man” on Broadway and audiences are spell bound. The reworked musical by Meredith Willson opened Thursday night at the Winter Garden Theater on Broadway. The multicultural cast puts forth an amazing performance with lots of credit also due to Sutton Foster, who plays Hill’s reluctant love interest.

Jackson and Foster complement each other as they enact a simple, yet powerful story of a traveling salesman who reaches a small town in Iowa. He cons them to form a band so they have to buy musical, instruments, uniforms and more from him at exorbitant rates.

He falls in love with the town librarian and that’s the way the tale goes. Although the tale is more than six decades old, it appeals in 2022. Care has been taken to rewrite some of the lyrics in the songs including the famous Shipoopi song.

The 2022 version of The Music Man has adapted the lyrics to modern times taking care that it avoids misogyny, racism and sensitivity to the hashtag MeToo movement by correctly editing lyrics that no longer are in keeping with the times.

The script of Music Man ends abruptly but at the Winter Garden Theater it ends with a dance party that encapsulates the entire musical with 76 trombones. The shows begins with a train where the conductor says “All aboard!” As the musical journey commences, the audience is carried along with momentum and nobody wants to step off the illusory train but the show cannot always go on. It must end, sometime!

Jackman delivers both as a Broadway actor and as a Hollywood icon, leaving the audiences wanting more. However, Foster who plays Marion overpowers him a little, with her fantastic voice. The Music Man has reinvented itself and is delightful to watch with its music, dances, humor and overall shenanigans.

Kanye West Will Cancel Coachella Headliner Appearance Unless Billie Eilish Makes an Apology

Kanye West says he will cancel his  Coachella appearance  unless fellow headliner Billie Eilish apologizes to Travis Scott. Elish made a comment  after she made a mention  of Scott’s  Astroworld festival during a stampeded at a recent show. “I wait for people to be OK” before “I keep going”, she said while trying to get an inhaler to someone in the crowd in Atlanta.

Kanye claims her comment was  aimed at Travis Scott’s handling of the deadly crush and stamped at his Astroworld festival.
