Peres Jepchirchir makes history with Boston Marathon win

0

With her victory in the Boston Marathon on Monday, Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya became the first athlete to win an Olympic marathon gold medal and the New York City and Boston marathons.

Jepchirchir, 28, the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games gold medalist and 2021 NYC champion, finished the 26.2-mile race with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 21 minutes and 1 second.

Competing in Boston for the first time, Jepchirchir won a back-and-forth finish against Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh. Kenya’s Mary Ngugi was third and Nell Rojas was the top American finisher in 10th place.

Evans Chebet, 33, won the men’s race in 2:06:51, with fellow Kenyans Lawrence Cherono and defending champion Benson Kipruto finishing second and third, respectively. Scott Fauble was the top U.S. finisher in seventh place.

It was the first major marathon victory for Chebet.

Switzerland’s Manuela Schar won the women’s wheelchair competition for the fourth time and Daniel Romanchuk of the U.S. won his second Boston title in the men’s wheelchair race.

It was the first time since 2019 that the marathon took place on its traditional spring date on Patriots’ Day. The 2020 race was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the 2021 edition was held in October.

Hometown player Alison Lee grabs lead in LA Open

0

Alison Lee made herself at home in her hometown event on Thursday, charging to the first-round lead in the LA Open.

The 27-year-old Los Angeles native and UCLA product shot a 5-under-par 66 at Wilshire Country Club to hold a one-shot edge on Emma Talley, Japan’s Nasa Hataoka and Denmark’s Emily Kristine Pedersen.

Jennifer Song, Haylee Harford, Janie Jackson, the Netherlands’ Dewi Weber and the South Korean duo of So Yeon Ryu and Sei Young Kim are tied for fifth at 3 under.

Lee, who has never won an LPGA event, made two birdies on the front nine and three on the back nine in a bogey-free round.

“I feel really comfortable, and I would say it’s not so much the course but just being in L.A., seeing a bunch of familiar faces out there,” she said. “Sometimes when you play week to week it does get pretty lonely out there.

“When you come to an event and you see people that you recognize and you know and they’re there to support you and bring up and lift you up, … it’s just it’s nice. Good to see my parents, too, because they were able to come out this week. Overall just feels great. Hopefully I can just keep the ball rolling.”

Talley had five birdies in an eight-hole stretch at the middle of her round before making her lone bogey at the par-4 eighth hole.

“I’ve been playing really well,” Talley said. “I worked really hard in the offseason with all my coaches, my trainers, mental coach. … There is a big team around me. We’ve been working very hard and I feel confident.

“Obviously … there is a lot of golf to be played, but at least I know I feel good about my game.”

Hataoka’s up-and-down round featured seven birdies and three bogeys.

“Wilshire is not an easy course, (so) 4 under is a pretty good start for me,” Hataoka said.

Pedersen surrounded her only bogey with two hot streaks — three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the front nine, back-to-back birdies on the back nine.

Defending champion Brooke M. Henderson of Canada shot a 5-over 76 to leave her tied for 116th and in danger of missing the cut. Henderson withdrew from last week’s Lotte Championship in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, after the first round due to an illness.

Japan’s Roki Sasaki follows perfect game with 8 perfect innings

0

Roki Sasaki almost did it again.

A week after throwing a perfect game for the Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball, Sasaki followed up with eight perfect innings Sunday against the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.

The 20-year-old struck out 14 before he was lifted after throwing 102 pitches. The game was scoreless at the time, and the Marines lost 1-0 in 10 innings. ESPN said his pitches reportedly still were reaching 101 mph when he was pulled from the game.

No runner has reached base against Sasaki in 52 consecutive plate appearances, a league record.

In four starts, Sasaki has a 1.16 ERA with 56 strikeouts. In 31 innings, he’s given up seven hits and two walks.

In his perfect game last Sunday, Sasaki tied a Nippon Professional League record with 19 strikeouts — 13 in a row — against the Orix Buffaloes. It was Japan’s first perfect game since 1994.

What are the health benefits of drinking coffee?

0

Yes, you read it correctly, coffee does have health benefits but only when it is consumed in limited quantities. Past research has shown that coffee has been linked to a few health benefits such as a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, a reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease and the newest research shows that people who have a daily cup of coffee may have a lower risk of getting or dying from liver diseases.

Researchers published a study in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) which showed that drinking coffee up to three or four cups a day had a protective effect on the liver and prevented Chronic Liver Disease (CLD). The data was obtained from at least 495,000 people in the U.K. It was a study that encompassed coffee drinking habits for over 10 years. However, the study did not include enough participants from the lower- and middle-income groups who are more prone to CLD.

The study found that all coffee drinkers in the particular demography gained some benefits. The benefits were mainly due to kahweol and cafestol, two chemical compounds present in coffee beans. The research concluded that those who made their cups using ground beans gained the maximum protection.

The study also found that coffee drinkers had about 20 percent less risk of contracting a liver disease. They also had lower risks of dying from a liver related disease. Hence the authors concluded that coffee may offer a protective effect. However, it could be one among several factors including exercise and a healthy diet.

The authors also cautioned against the results due to certain factors beyond control and called for a more rigorous and controlled study of the amount of coffee consumed to get better and more accurate results. They also said that diversity in the group studied should be included to validate findings.

A cup of coffee brings cheer to many and if it brings health benefits, then it is a cherry on top of the icing. Many coffee lovers do not consider health benefits when they reach for their cup of java. They often wish for reassurance that there are no carcinogens in their favorite brew.

Mirren received the Life Achievement Award at the 2022 SAG Awards for playing Queenie in Hobbs & Shaw and F9- year 2019.

Mirren has played in over 60 films and is best known for her role as Detective Jane Tennison on the television series Prime Suspect (1991—96, 2003, and 2006) and for her subtle and sympathetic portrayal of Elizabeth II in The Queen (2006) as reported by Britannica.

Queen Elizabeth II is 96, spends day at Sandringham with close family

0

Queen Elizabeth II is 96-years old on Thursday, April 21, 2022. She is the oldest living monarch, who is also celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this year. The monarch has been in power for seven decades. She will have a quiet birthday celebration at a cottage in their Sandringham estate in Norfolk. She has faced a few health conditions including COVID, with which she was infected, earlier this year, in February.

Although the Queen is having a quiet celebration, there will be gun salutes to commemorate the occasion. The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, will play Happy Birthday, to honor her on this day. Her family and her close friends will celebrate the day with her.

The royal family Twitter account released a photo of the Queen standing between two fell ponies, who are called Bybeck Katie and Bybeck Nightingale. The Queen has been fond of horses throughout her life. The account states that the photo was taken in March, on the grounds of Windsor Castle, where the Queen has stayed at, after falling ill with COVID. Buckingham Palace also posted a cute picture of Princess Elizabeth, when she was two-years old, in 1928.

Many family members, dignitaries, politicians and world leaders wished the Queen on her 96th birthday. They included Prince Charles and Camilla, Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the leader of the opposition Sir Keir Starmer and many others.

Toymaker Mattel has released a Barbie doll which features a young Elizabeth. It has partly captured a likeness to the Queen. The doll is dressed in an ivory gown. It has a blue sash across with pink and blue ribbons that represent the ones given to her by George VI, her father and George V, her grandfather, according to the toy company.

The doll is also wearing a tiara that was worn by Queen Elizabeth II, when she married Prince Philip. The doll has been released today, April 21, which is her 96th birthday. It was made to commemorate her Platinum Jubilee, another momentous occasion in Queen Elizabeth II’s long and eventful life.

Emmanuel Macron cements lead over Marine Le Pen after TV debate

0

On Wednesday, President Emmanuel Macron faced closest opposition rival Marine Le Pen and emerged as the frontrunner. The marathon face off, lasting two hours and 45-minutes took place on TV, on Wednesday evening. The final verdict by both the public and political pundits was that Macron led the debate. About 15.6 million watched the debate, not including those who watched it online. Pollsters Elabe reported that 59 percent of the viewers said that Macron was more convincing while 39 percent said the same of Le Pen.

Another positive result for Macron came from supporters of Jean-Luc Melenchon. Both Macron and Le Pen have been appealing to his supporters for support after he dropped out of the presidential race. The Elaba poll showed that 61 percent of his political base found Macron to be convincing while 29 percent said that Le Pen who represents the far right had “the most qualities necessary to be the president”, according to a report in The Guardian. Incidentally Jean-Luc Melenchon is a leader of the radical left in France and has 7.7 million voters who support him, as per the outlet.

Newspapers in France also said Emmanuel Macron was more convincing as Le Monde termed the debate as a “failure” for Le Pen, while Le Parisien said that “she did not dispel the doubts” after the debate. Le Figaro said that “the debate would not have changed voters’ intentions”, as per the report in The Guardian.

Emmanuel Macron went on the offensive as he attacked Le Pen’s ties with the Russian leadership and for taking a Russian bank loan for RN, her party. He also reminded her that she was among the first few political leaders who recognized Russia’s annexation of Crimea, in 2014. She said that they were unable to get loans from French banks.

He also questioned her plans on the economy. Macron argued about the efficacy of the policies his administration had already put in place. These proposals had already been enacted to protect French citizens from inflation. He mentioned that the cap on fuel prices as well as tax exemptions for pay bonuses had been much fairer as well as more effective than the ideas that had been proposed by Madame Le Pen. He challenged her proposals and called them not workable. Marine Le Pen didn’t say much on the burning issue of unemployment that is running through France.

Emmanuel Macron also attacked her policy on the European Union. There have been major reports that Marine Le Pen was looking at Frexit, similar to Brexit, which became a plank for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to cement his position in the U.K. She said that she was seeking change from within it (The European Union) but Macron argued that her idea would bring an end to the EU and said that she was “selling a lie.”

Some analysts say that Brexit has not delivered what it promised, at least as of now. France is more closely connected to the European Union than the U.K. ever was, both geographically and culturally and the prospect of a Frexit, is unpopular in France, which has made the far-right party and its leader tone down its earlier proposal of leaving the EU.

Other topics in the debate between presidential candidates Monsieur Emmanuel Macron and Madame Marine Le Pen included climate change and immigration.

Macron has put forth proposals to spend more on green energy. He called Le Pen “a climate sceptic” while Marine Le Pen called him “a climate hypocrite.” However, both of them agreed that France had to build more nuclear plants.

Madame Le Pen said that she would enforce a controversial policy that bans women from wearing an Islamic headscarf called the Hijab, in public. Monsieur Macron said that he sincerely felt that she would cause a “civil war” if she did that.

This is a pivotal moment for France and the two presidential candidates: Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen. The winner will be decided after Sunday. All indications are that Emmanuel Macron will be the President of France, once again, although there is a faction of voters who are undecided. However, the official results will come in, only after Sunday, April 24 when the nation will vote for its next president.

Florida and Disney standoff could lead to loss of privileges for Disney

0

On Wednesday, Florida’s Senate approved of a bill that would remove Walt Disney Company’s special tax district. This move by the Senate will also receive a favorable vote by the House as Florida is a predominantly Republican ruled state. Disney, including its CEO and many employees, have been at loggerheads with the Sunshine State after its governor Ron DeSantis passed the HB 1157 commonly referred to as “Don’t Say Gay” bill into law, despite protests from the largest employer in the state.

The standoff between Disney and the Florida legislature has continued. On Tuesday, Republican governor, a strong conservative governor, announced that lawmakers in the state would consider terminating all special districts that were announced in Florida prior to 1968 and the Reedy Creek Improvement District was one among them.

The Reedy Creek Improvement District was created in 1967. It is a semi-private district that has independence in governance. Disney’s Orlando Theme Park is under this district. It gets several privileges including autonomy under local police and fire departments. It saves millions of dollars in taxes, fees and exemptions, according to a person familiar with the matter, who mentioned it to The Wall Street Journal. It maintains public services including roads and bridges.

The legislation received a 23-16 vote in its favor. All special districts will be eliminated in June 2023, according to the legislation. The WSJ also reported that although six such districts would be eliminated, only Disney was likely to face problems.

Disney World is the largest employer in the state of Florida. Although it has been accused of promoting “woke” ideology by the Republican governor of the state, Disney employees have held protests, earlier saying that the company was not doing enough for the LGBTQ+ community.

Democratic Governor of Colorado, Jared Polis is ready to welcome Disney’s Theme Park to relocate from swampy Florida to its mountainous state. The governor has given an open invitation to Disney, Twitter and other private companies who are facing issues from the Republicans, to relocate to his state, on Wednesday.

Neither Disney, nor Twitter have responded to his invitation, as yet. Disney has not commented on the new legislation passed by the Senate, as of now.
