Matteo Berrettini (hand) withdraws from French Open

World No. 8 Matteo Berrettini announced Saturday that he withdrew from the upcoming French Open as he continues his recovery from right hand surgery.

Berrettini underwent the procedure in March. Play at Roland Garros begins May 22.

“Following a very positive update from my medical team, I am now back on-court training at a high level,” the Italian said on Instagram. “My hand is feeling great and I am working hard to build up my match fitness.

“My team and I have made the decision that going straight back into five-set matches on clay at Roland Garros would not be sensible, therefore I will delay my comeback to compete in the full grass season.”

Berrettini, 26, reached the quarterfinals in Paris last year before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

He reached the Australian Open semifinals earlier this year before losing to eventual champ Rafael Nadal.

Tundra clinch Group A, Liquid tied atop Group B at ESL One Stockholm

While Tundra Esports clinched the top spot of Group A Saturday, Team Liquid pulled even with Team Spirit in leading Group B with one day remaining in Group Stage action at ESL One Stockholm in Sweden.

Tundra kept up their hot play in the event, recording a pair of 2-0 sweeps Saturday by defeating both beastcoast and BOOM Esports to remain unbeaten with four wins and a tie.

After a 2-0 loss to TSM to begin their day, Liquid pulled off its own 2-0 victory over Spirit — whose 1-1 draw with TSM earlier in the day opened the door for a first-place tie atop the group.

Both Liquid and Spirit have three wins against two defeats and a tie heading into Sunday.

Fourteen teams from around the world entered the season’s first major (prior to Mind Games’ disqualification), beginning in two groups of seven in a round-robin Group Stage. All Group Stage matches are best-of-two. The top four teams in each group will qualify for the upper bracket of the playoffs and the fifth- and sixth-place teams will start in the lower bracket.

After the Group Stage concludes Sunday, the playoffs will begin Monday with best-of-three matches until the best-of-five Grand Final on May 22. The winning team will earn a $200,000 grand prize.

Dota Pro Circuit previously removed Mind Games from the competition due to ongoing travel visa issues for multiple team members. Every team in Group B, including Spirit, received a tally in the win column.

Tundra started by dumping beastcoast in 51 minutes on red before clinching the first match with a 35-minute win on green. Tundra then dispatched BOOM, winning in 37 minutes on red and nearly 31 minutes on green.

TSM put the heat on Liquid first with a win on red that took just under an hour to complete. TSM then won the second map in 39 minutes on green for the match win.

After Spirit first grabbed an automatic win because of Mind Games’ disqualification, Liquid pulled off the sweep by taking consecutive maps on red, first in 41 minutes and the latter in 32 minutes.

Also in Group A, BetBoom Team picked up two wins to move into second place — winning 2-0 over Evil Geniuses via 32- and 37-minute wins on green and beating T1 twice on red, winning in 33 and 42 minutes, respectively.

T1 and BOOM also played to a 1-1 tie, with BOOM winning in 33 minutes on red and T1 earning the draw in 47 minutes on green. The Geniuses also lost 2-0 to OG, dropping maps on 37 minutes (red) and 43 minutes (green).

In other Group B matches, Fnatic and Thunder Awaken competed to a 1-1 stalemate — with Fnatic winning on red in 22 minutes before a 36-minute triumph on green for Thunder.

Thunder drew again Saturday against Gaimin Gladiators, with a 46-minute map win for the Gladiators on green followed by a Thunder 27-minute victory, also on green.

Fnatic was also credited with a win against the DQ’ed Mind Games team.

The Group Stage concludes Sunday with five matches — not including a scheduled Team Liquid-Mind Games matchup, which will count as a win for Liquid:
T1 vs. Tundra Esports (Group A)
Evil Geniuses vs. beastcoast (Group A)
OG vs. BetBoom Team (Group A)
Fnatic vs. Gaimin Gladiators (Group B)
Thunder Awaken vs. TSM (Group B)

ESL One Stockholm Group Stage standings (match record via W-T-L, map record):

1. Tundra Esports, 4-1-0, 9-1
2. BetBoom Team, 2-3-0, 7-3

Coinbase Review, Additional Disclosures and CEO’s Tweet Are Misunderstood

0

Analysts at Oppenheimer provided their views of Coinbase Global, Inc.(NASDAQ:COIN) after conducting due diligence and reviewing the company’s latest 10Q and industry information. The analysts believe that the additional disclosures and the tweet from CEO Brain Armstrong are grossly misunderstood and being taken out of context.
According to the analysts, this additional disclosure is required by the new SAB 121 instituted in March 2022, and shouldn’t be interpreted that the company is at risk of bankruptcy. In fact, Coinbase’s CEO made it clear that the company “has no risk of bankruptcy”. Additionally, while the turbulence in TerraUSD caused uncertainty in the system, it drove higher trading volume for Coinbase in recent days.
According to the analysts, shares appear to trade at a distress level, but the company’s fundamentals remain strong and long-term crypto adoption remains intact, providing an attractive entry point for long-term investors.
As of Q1/22, the company had $6.1 billion in cash and $2.7 billion of net cash. Even under a prolonged stressful scenario, it can easily absorb the maximum adjusted EBITDA loss of $500 million this year.

Novak Djokovic reaches Rome final, 1,000-win mark

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic became just the fifth men’s player to win 1,000 matches in the Open Era on Saturday, when he handled fifth-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud, 6-4, 6-3, in the semifinals of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.

Djokovic, who turns 35 next week, joined Jimmy Connors (1,274), Roger Federer (1,251), Ivan Lendl (1,068) and Rafael Nadal (1,051) in the 1,000-victory club.

The Serbian will be seeking his 87th ATP singles title Sunday when he faces fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.

“Thanks to the tournament and the crowd for celebrating the milestone with me,” Djokovic said in a post-match interview. “I’ve seen Roger and Rafa celebrate those milestones in the last couple of years and I was looking forward to get to that 1,000 myself. I’m really, really blessed and privileged to have that many victories on the Tour. It’s been a long time, ever since I won my first match on the Tour. Hopefully I can keep going and many more victories to come.”

Tsitsipas defeated second-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours, 28 minutes on Saturday in the third semifinal meeting between the duo in the past month.

“He wasn’t giving me much, he made me work hard for every single point,” Tsitsipas said after pushing his career record against Zverev to 8-4. “I’m extremely proud of the way things turned around, and I was able to read the gameplay a little bit better and understand what was working at that time.”

Tsitsipas, ranked fifth in the world entering the tournament, beat Zverev in straight sets in April in the semifinals on his way to winning the Monte Carlo Masters, and then the German reversed the result last week in Madrid.

Tsitsipas leads the tour with 31 match victories in 2022.

Djokovic has already ensured that he will retain the No. 1 world ranking for the 370th overall week of his career.

“I thought I played very well,” Djokovic said. “Started fantastic, 4-0. Then I did slow down a bit. I did drop my level and I wasn’t feeling that great on the court for about 15, 20 minutes. He used that, managed to get himself back in the first set. It was important to close it out in the 10th game, clinch the first set.”

Steve Stricker up 3 shots through 54 holes at Regions Tradition

Steve Stricker shot a 6-under-66 on Saturday and holds a three-shot lead after three rounds of the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Ala.

Stricker sits at 17-under 199 through three trips around Greystone Golf and Country Club and has led after every round. Steven Alker is his closest pursuer after the New Zealander carded a stellar 65 in the third round.

Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez shot 67 and is five shots back in third. Australia’s Stuart Appleby (68) and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington (70) are tied for fourth and six shots back.

Stricker, who is seeking his fourth major title on the Champions tour, birdied four of his last six holes. Overall, the 2019 Regions winner had seven birdies and one bogey on the day.

Stricker, 55, is thriving after a six-month absence due to a “mystery illness.” He returned to action last month.

Alker kept the heat on with a bogey-free round. He registered seven birdies.

Jimenez had six birdies and one bogey to stay in the hunt.

Appleby had four birdies without a bogey.

Harrington had two birdies and two bogeys and finished with a flourish as he carded an eagle on the par-5, 18th hole.

Glen Day (68) and South Africa’s Ernie Els (70) are tied for sixth at 10-under 206. Australia’s Rod Pampling (69) is alone in eighth at 9 under.

Chris DiMarco matched Alker for the lowest score of the day at 65. He is tied for 31st at 3-under 213.

Defending champion Alex Cejka of Germany was disqualified after shooting 66 for using a yardage book that wasn’t approved by the PGA Tour Champions Rules Committee. He was at 7-under through 54 holes before the discipline.

Marvel to introduce two transgender superheroes in Pride edition comic

Marvel announced the arrival of two transgender superheroes in a new Pride comic. Transgender writer Charlier Jane Anders has created the two characters: Escapade, who is also called Shela Sexton and Morgan Red, who is her partner. Both of them fight crime on the mutant nation of Krakoa. British team Ro Stein and Ted Brandt have created the artwork. The superhero and her partner have been there for each other through childhood to adulthood.

A press release from Marvel said that the pair are professional thieves who steal from organizations that are corrupt and criminal till a life changing event occurs in Escapade’s life. They are also helped by Hibbert, a genetically modified turtle. They had saved the turtle from a lab.

Escapade has a super power that gives her ability to take the form of an individual standing near her, by switching locations and bodies. The writer said that Escapade could become the Mayor of New York, for a while, if she got close to him or her.

Morgan Red doesn’t seem to have a super power but is extremely “tech savvy.” He also has lots of equipment in a tool belt. The belt is filled with devices and tools that have been stolen.

The comic has a whole community of trans mutants. Charlie Jane Anders is a transgender. She said that she wanted to be “super clear that being a mutant is not a metaphor for being trans and vice versa.”

Anders also says that her superhero has faced rejection as she is transgender and wants to help people so they “belong.” She also want them to “be seen and loved.” This has been the writer’s aim, who hopes that all especially young trans people who read the topic are able to grasp this message.

The first edition of “Marvel’s Voices: Pride” will be released on June 22, 2022. It will feature Escape and Red. There will be eight “queer-centered” stories in the Marvel Universe, by writers and artists from different walks of life.

Watch Shooting outside Milwaukee Bucks game wounds 3, later 17 shot few blocks away

0

Friday night, Milwaukee saw twenty people getting shot in the same evening within a few blocks of the home court of the Bucks. Three people were shot outside the arena where the Milwaukee Bucks were playing the Celtics. A couple of hours later, seventeen people were shot in downtown Milwaukee, not too far away from the Fiserv Forum, the home court of the Bucks.

The first shooting took place very near the arena where the Milwaukee Bucks were playing against the Celtics in the NBA Playoffs. Milwaukee Police Captain Warren Allen said that a 26-year old man, a 16-year old girl and another 29-year old man were wounded in the shooting.

The police took a 19-year old male into custody, in connection with the shooting incident, which occurred at around 9:12 p.m. The incident took place near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Highland Avenue. The location is just a block away from the home court of the Bucks who lost to the game to the Celtics 108-95.

About two hours later a mass shooting incident took place a few blocks away. Seventeen people were shot. Captain Allen said that their ages ranged from 15 to 47. He also mentioned that 10 people had been taken into custody in the downtown shooting. The police recovered nine firearms in this shooting incident in Milwaukee. It took place blocks away from the Milwaukee Art Museum.

None of the shootings resulted in death as none of the injuries were life threatening. Police have not revealed any names nor have they released any motive behind the shootings, as yet. It is not known if fans or others were involved, nor were there indications whether the two shootings were related.

On Friday night, in a statement, the Milwaukee Bucks said that there was no shooting inside the Deer District. About 11,000 fans, who were unable to watch the game inside the arena, were watching it outside. There is another decisive game, Game 7, in the Deer District, on Sunday. There has been no comment from concerned parties, when asked if there would be additional security for the upcoming game.

Astros, winners of 11 straight, continue road trip in Washington

The math doesn’t look good for the Washington Nationals going into Saturday night’s game against the Houston Astros, who are the hottest team in the majors.

The Astros hold an 11-game winning streak. After beating Washington on Friday night, they’ve won four games on what’s scheduled to be a nine-game road trip.

The Nationals have won four home games all season, dipping to 4-14 at Nationals Park.

It already has been a nice homecoming for Astros manager Dusty Baker, who’s a former Washington skipper. With Friday night’s 6-1 victory, the 72-year-old moved alone in 10th place in all-time managerial victories with 2,009 — one more than Leo Durocher.

It was Baker’s first game in Washington since he finished managing the Nationals following the 2017 season.

“I always wanted to leave a place in better shape than when I came,” Baker said of his return. “… It’s a little strange coming here (and to the visiting dugout), but I had great memories here. People were great. I enjoyed the town.”

Nationals manager Dave Martinez replaced Baker in Washington. He’s also a former player under Baker, so they have long ties and Martinez has seen Baker’s work from various vantage points.

“Just the constant positivity,” Martinez said. “That’s Dusty. When things go down, he finds a way to lift you up. I learned a lot from him in that respect.”

The Nationals might need a dose of that these days as they’ve struggled.

Houston ripped three home runs across the first three innings Friday night. The Nationals managed just eight singles one game after registering just two extra-base hits in a loss to the New York Mets, so there has been a power outage for Washington.

Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez has three homers in the past two games, including a massive blast to center field in the series opener.

Baker said second baseman Jose Altuve, who slipped awkwardly in the field, was taken out as a precaution. Altuve, who homered to begin the game, would probably have been given a day to rest Saturday anyway, Baker said.

The Houston pitching staff is in a good spot after Framber Valdez logged 7 2/3 innings and gave up one run.

“When we get starting pitching like that, then the bullpen stays relatively fresh and that’s very important,” Baker said.

The Astros will go with right-hander Cristian Javier (2-0, 0.83 ERA) on Saturday as Houston skips over Jake Odorizzi’s spot in the order. Odorizzi got off to a slow 2022 season but has won three straight games, giving up one run in 17 2/3 innings.

“We’ve still got him in the plans. Still got him in the rotation,” Baker said.

Javier has never faced the Nationals.

Washington will counter with righty Erick Fedde (2-2, 3.90 ERA), who has allowed just one run across 12 innings in two starts this month. Fedde has never faced the Astros.

Fedde’s problem has been efficiency, with his pitch count going above 90 four times this season. He has walked seven with seven strikeouts in the two May games.

The Astros are waiting to see the status of shortstop Jeremy Pena, who left Thursday’s action because of a sore right knee.

“Hopefully he’ll be available in this series,” Baker said, “I’m not exactly sure when.”
