D.C. United rally to tie Inter Miami, 2-2

0

Taxiarchis Fountas and Ola Kamara scored goals as D.C. United rallied from a two-goal deficit to notch a 2-2 tie against host Inter Miami CF on Saturday night.

Leonardo Campana and Damion Lowe scored goals for Inter Miami (3-6-2, 11 points), who is winless in their past three matches (0-2-1).

D.C. United (4-5-1, 13 points) is 2-1-1 over their last four outings.

The match started 75 minutes late due to a fierce storm in the area. It continued to rain throughout the match.

D.C. United tallied the tying goal in the 74th minute as Russell Canouse fed Kamara, who sent a right-footed shot past Miami goalie Drake Callender. The goal was Kamara’s fifth of the season.

Miami had a 10-9 edge in shots and put seven on target to D.C. United’s five.

D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid had five saves while Miami’s Callender made three.

D.C. United’s Chris Durkin was sent off with a red card in the first minute of the second-half stoppage time after receiving his second yellow card of the match. That left Inter Miami with a man-advantage for the final six minutes but they weren’t able to take advantage.

Inter Miami took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when Ariel Lassiter sent a left-footed cross in front of the goal to Campana, whose right-footed shot caromed off Hamid and into the net. The goal was Campana’s sixth of the season.

Miami doubled the lead 14 minutes later off a corner kick. Jean Mota sent it toward the middle of the box and Lowe was ready and snapped a one-hop header into the right corner of the net for his first MLS goal.

But D.C. United answered in the third minute of first-half stoppage time as Michael Estrada’s touch pass off his leg set up Fountas, who sent a right-footer into the right corner. It was the fifth goal of the season for Fountas, all coming in the past four matches.

Dynamo play shorthanded, still blank Nashville SC

0

Adalberto Carrasquilla and Darwin Quintero scored goals and the Houston defense rose to the occasion despite playing the final 55-plus minutes a man down as the Dynamo defeated visiting Nashville SC 2-0 on Saturday in a Western Conference match.

The Dynamo (4-4-3, 15 points) snapped a three-match MLS losing streak and won for the first time in three all-time contests against Nashville.

Steve Clark had two saves to earn his third clean sheet of the season and the 47th of his nine-year MLS career.

The Dynamo grabbed the lead on Carrasquilla’s goal in the 16th minute, which came on a rebound of a blistered shot by Jose Guillermo “Memo” Rodriquez, which was saved by Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis.

Willis was forced to drive to his right to stop Rodriquez’s shot, and the ball deflected to Carrasquilla, who kept his right-footed shot low and into its target in the lower left side of the net.

Houston’s Adam Lundqvist was assessed a red card in the 35th minute when he slid into Nashville midfielder Alex Muyl, forcing the Dynamo to play the final 55 minutes a man down on a sweltering evening.

Quintero added to the Houston advantage in the 53rd minute on a penalty kick after Fabrice-Jean “Fafa” Picault was knocked down in the box on a breakaway by Willis. From the spot, Quintero went to the right after faking the Nashville keeper to the left.

Nashville nearly found the goal three minutes later when C.J. Sapong leaped to head a corner kick that bounced off the top of the crossbar and out of play.

Nashville (4-4-3, 15 points) has won just once in its past five matches and has recorded consecutive MLS victories just once since September 2021.

Alyssa Thomas leads Sun to home-opening win over Sparks

Alyssa Thomas totaled 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as the Connecticut Sun started quickly in their home opener and recorded a wire-to-wire 77-60 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night in Uncasville, Conn.

The Sun (1-1) won their fourth straight home opener in Uncasville by dominating most of the game against the Sparks, whom they defeated late last season to clinch a double bye in last season’s playoffs.

Thomas shot 10 of 17 from the field as the Sun shot 40 percent from the field and missed 15 of 20 3-point tries.

Jonquel Jones appeared in her 165th game to pass Kelsey Griffin for the most games played with the Sun and also posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Dijonai Carrington added 13 points and Brionna Jones chipped in 10 as Connecticut led by as many as 24 in the first half.

Jordin Canada and Nneka Ogwumike scored 12 points apiece as the Sparks (2-2) dropped their second straight. Liz Cambage was held to 10 points as Los Angeles shot 35.2 percent and committed 20 turnovers.

Jones and Thomas scored 10 points apiece as the Sun raced out to a 12-0 lead and held a 25-14 lead through the opening quarter. Connecticut outscored the Sparks 23-11 in the second quarter and extended the lead to 49-25 at halftime on a putback by Jones at the buzzer.

Los Angeles scored the first eight points of the third to get within 49-33 on a jumper by Canada with 8:23 left and outscored the Sun 19-8 to get within 57-44 entering the fourth after trailing by 21 with 2 1/2 minutes left.

Los Angeles trailed 67-52 when Jasmine Thomas hit a 3-pointer with 6:17 left and consecutive hoops by Canada got the Sparks within 67-58 less than two minutes later. The Sun finished it off by scoring 10 straight points.

NHL roundup: Oilers blank Kings in G7 to advance

Connor McDavid scored once and added an assist while goaltender Mike Smith recorded the shutout as the host Edmonton Oilers claimed a 2-0 Game 7 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

Smith made 29 saves to earn his second shutout of the series and sixth playoff goose egg in his career. Cody Ceci scored the series-winning goal.

Jonathan Quick was outstanding for the Kings while stopping 39 shots, but his teammates couldn’t find the offense to win the Western Conference first-round series.

Edmonton, which advanced past the opening round for the first time since 2017, will face the winner of the series between the Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars, who meet in Game 7 on Sunday.

The Oilers held the bulk of the momentum all game, especially in a one-sided second period in which they outshot the visitors 24-11. They were finally rewarded at 13:15 of the middle frame when Ceci moved to the right face-off dot for a pass from McDavid and lifted a top-shelf wrist shot for his first goal of the playoffs.

With his assist, McDavid — by far the most dominating skater on the ice — is the first Oilers players with 10 helpers in a playoff series since Mark Messier in the 1989 Smythe Division semifinal against the Kings.

Hurricanes 3, Bruins 2

Max Domi had two goals and an assist to help Carolina fend off and eliminate visiting Boston with a win in Game 7 of their first-round series.

The Hurricanes withstood a goal and ensuring flurry in the final 22 seconds to seal the win. Domi’s output matched the Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise record for most points in a Game 7.

Carolina will face the winner of the series between the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Lightning 2, Maple Leafs 1

Nicholas Paul scored his first two career playoff goals and visiting Tampa Bay defeated Toronto to take the first-round playoff series in seven games.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 30 shots in a strong effort in goal for the Lightning, whose pursuit of a third straight Stanley Cup remains alive.

Morgan Rielly scored for the Maple Leafs, who have not won a first-round playoff series in seven attempts since 2004. Jack Campbell made 23 saves for Toronto.

Luciano Acosta nets late winner as FC Cincinnati stop Fire

0

Luciano Acosta scored the tiebreaking goal in the 85th minute, and visiting FC Cincinnati took advantage of two glaring Chicago Fire mistakes to match a franchise’s single-season record with their fourth victory in a row, winning 2-1 on Saturday night.

Two minutes after Chicago’s Jhon Duran leveled the match off a Xherdan Shaqiri corner, Acosta recorded his fifth goal for Cincinnati (6-5-1, 19 points), which won six games in its inaugural 2019 MLS season, but only four in each of the last two.

Acosta converted after teammate Brandon Vazquez pressured Fire goalkeeper Gaga Slonina, who turns 18 on Sunday, into a lazy pass that found the Cincinnati midfielder, who then positioned himself for the go-ahead strike.

Cincinnati also benefited from Chicago defender Rafael Czichos’ own goal in the 33rd minute.

Roman Celentano made four saves for Cincinnati.

The Fire (2-5-4, 10 points), losers of four in a row and winless in seven straight, owned a 18-9 advantage in overall shots and 5-3 on target, but still have not scored more than one goal in a game during their current 0-5-2 league rut.

For a solid 10-minute stretch leading just past the half-hour mark, Chicago applied consistent pressure at the Cincinnati end. However, its biggest offensive moment of the night came via an unfortunate misplay by the Fire. Czichos headed a long entry ball back toward Slonina, who moved forward to play it, but was too far out of position as it went well over his head and into the net.

MLS veteran and another suburban Chicago product Chris Mueller, making his first start in his second match since joining the Fire, was consistently active during the first half. The Fire recorded nine shots in the first half, three of which were on target.

However, FC Cincinnati was the early aggressor out of the break. Yet, Slonina (two saves) made a point-blank stop on Alvaro Barreal’s drive. Then moments later, Slonina got enough of his body on the ball to spoil a Cincinnati cross.

Oilers close out Kings in Game 7 as Connor McDavid shines

Several times the Oilers came agonizingly close to scoring — including one play when Kings forward Andreas Athanasiou swiped a rolling puck off the goal line after it squeaked past his netminder.

McDavid wasn’t finished. He sealed the deal with 3:53 remaining when he was denied on a breakaway and a wraparound only to gain the puck again and lift a shot into the cage for his fourth goal of the series and 14th point.

He’s the second player in NHL history to record six multi-point games in one series, joining former Boston Bruins star Rick Middleton, who racked up 19 points (5-14-19) in the 1983 division final against the Buffalo Sabres.

McDavid is only the fifth player in NHL history to record four or more goals and 10 or more assists in one playoff series.

Red Bulls manage tie with Union down a man

0

Daniel Gazdag scored for the host Philadelphia Union, who extended their unbeaten streak to four in a row following a 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday in Chester, Pa.

The Union (5-1-5, 20 points) weren’t able to come up with a victory despite playing with a man advantage from the 55th minute on.

Luquinhas scored the tying goal for the Red Bulls (5-2-4, 19 points) in the 66th minute. The Red Bulls pushed their unbeaten streak to five.

New York had won its first five away games and were looking to become the first team in league history to win six consecutive on the road to start a season.

The game was a defensive battle through the first 20 minutes as neither team had a solid scoring opportunity.

The Union earned a corner kick in the 22nd minute and Kai Wagner sent a sharp cross into the box which was nearly redirected before being cleared.

New York’s Dylan Nealis was whistled for a yellow card in the 26th minute for a reckless tackle against Jack Elliott.

In the 42nd minute, the Red Bulls’ Luquinhas had a shot saved by goalkeeper Andre Blake from point-blank range and the game eventually wound up scoreless at halftime.

The Union came out aggressive in the second half and went ahead 1-0 when Gazdag scored in the 47th minute. It was Gazdag’s sixth goal of the season after scoring four all of last season.

The game became chippy in the 51st minute with a number of players on both sides pushing and shoving after the whistle.

Nealis was given his second yellow card in the 55th minute, leaving the Red Bulls with 10 players the rest of the game.

The Red Bulls equalized in the 66th minute when Luquinhas got behind Jose Martinez and connected.

Julian Carranza stepped in to head the ball into the net for an apparent 2-1 advantage in the 80th minute. But the goal was disallowed after video review deemed Carranza to be offsides.

Despite seven minutes of stoppage time, the game ended in a draw.

Nicholas Paul plays Game 7 hero as Lightning oust Leafs

Nicholas Paul scored his first two career playoff goals and the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 to take the first-round playoff series in seven games.

Paul scored his first career playoff goal at 18:24 of the first period. After carrying the puck up the left wing on a breakout following a Toronto rush, he knocked in the rebound from Ross Colton’s shot. Cal Foote also earned an assist.

The goal came shortly after Tampa Bay’s Brayden Point went to the locker room with an apparent leg injury. Point returned to play one shift in the second period and no more afterward, although he stayed on the bench.

Tampa Bay had an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal after one period.

John Tavares put the puck in the net for Toronto at 8:32 of the second period. It did not count, however, because Justin Holl was called for interference.

Tampa Bay applied furious pressure on the power play, but Toronto was able to survive.

Rielly tied the game on his third goal of the series at 13:25 of the second. Matthews set up Rielly for a shot from the right circle. Mitchell Marner also assisted.

Paul answered with his second goal at 16:32 of the second. He eluded TJ Brodie and kicked the puck back up to his stick before shooting it past Campbell. It came shortly after Vasilevskiy made a superb save.

Tampa Bay had a 19-14 edge in shots on goal after two periods.

Campbell was shaken up but stayed in the game early in the third period when Paul crashed into the net on another rush.

Toronto went on a power play at 6:19 of the third but Vasilevskiy held up under intense pressure.

Toronto removed Campbell for an extra attacker with more than two minutes to play, but the Lightning held off all challenges to advance.

Whitecaps tally in stoppage time to tie Quakes

0

Erik Godoy scored off a corner kick in second-half stoppage time to give the host Vancouver Whitecaps a 3-3 tie with the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.

Lucas Cavallini and Ryan Raposo also scored for the Whitecaps (2-6-2, 8 points). Cavallini had a chance to give Vancouver a victory in the final second, but his header went off the left post.

Jeremy Ebobisse scored twice for San Jose (2-5-4, 10 points), tying for the Major League Soccer lead with his seventh of the season. Jamiro Monteiro also tallied for San Jose.

After a scoreless first half, both teams turned up the tempo.

Cavallini opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, after a give-and-go with Raposo just outside the top of the penalty area. Cavallini’s low shot from 16 yards out snuck just inside the right post.

Cavallini nearly doubled the lead 10 minutes later on a three-on-two break, but San Jose goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski charged off his line to smother the shot from 15 yards out.

The Earthquakes went straight down the field to tie it. Monteiro got between defenders at the top of the 6-yard box and headed a cross from the right wing into the far side of the net.

Ebobisse scored his first in the 73rd minute, redirecting Cade Cowell’s pass into the far side netting.

The Whitecaps tied it two minutes later, as Raposo took a pass from Deiber Caicedo and blasted a shot from the top right of the 6-yard box just inside the right post.

Ebobisse gave the Earthquakes a 3-2 lead in the 81st minute on a header from the top of the 6-yard box off a cross from Cristian Espinoza.

Cavallini had two other quality chances in the second half, but Marcinkowski saved both. He made four stops.

Vancouver goalie Cody Cropper, making just his second MLS start since 2019, made three saves, all in the first half. Cropper was subbing for the injured Thomas Hasal.
