Twins extend hot streak with win against Tigers

Sonny Gray struck out 10 batters in seven scoreless innings, and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 2-0 win over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night in Minneapolis.

Gio Urshela and Carlos Correa notched one RBI apiece for the Twins, who won their sixth game in a row. Minnesota is a season-best 11 games over .500.

Gray (2-1) was masterful in recording his second victory in a row. He limited the Tigers to four hits and issued one walk while notching double-digit strikeouts for the first time this season.

Tigers rookie right-hander Beau Brieske (0-4) remained winless to start his big-league career. He allowed two runs on six hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out three.

Minnesota right-hander Tyler Duffey replaced Gray in the eighth. He struck out two while pitching a scoreless inning and throwing seven of 12 pitches for strikes.

Twins rookie right-hander Jhoan Duran entered the game in the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning for his fourth save.

Duran put runners on first and second base with one out after Miguel Cabrera singled and Jeimer Candelario was hit by a pitch. But he escaped trouble by getting Willi Castro to ground into a game-ending double play.

The Twins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Urshela singled to left field to drive in Max Kepler, who had reached base on a one-out walk.

Minnesota made it 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Luis Arraez ripped a one-out single to center field and came around to score on a double by Correa in the next at-bat.

The Tigers had a chance to score in the sixth, when Jonathan Schoop hit a leadoff single to center and advanced to second on a passed ball by Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers. But Schoop was stranded at second after Cabrera struck out, Javier Baez flied out to second and Candelario struck out.

The Twins and Tigers will meet again Wednesday afternoon for the third and final game of the series.

Mariners activate former Rookie of Year Kyle Lewis

The Seattle Mariners officially activated outfielder Kyle Lewis Tuesday for the first time this season after he had not played in the majors since suffering a severe knee injury nearly one year ago.

In related moves, the Mariners released outfielder Steven Souza Jr. and shipped right-hander Adrian Sampson to Triple-A Tacoma.

Lewis was scheduled to start Tuesday as the designated hitter, batting seventh, for Seattle in the team’s home game against the Oakland Athletics.

The 2020 American League Rookie of the Year last played on May 31, 2021, when he tore his meniscus in his right knee trying to make a catch in center field. Lewis also tore his ACL in the same knee as a minor leaguer in 2016.

Lewis played in 10 games for Triple-A Tacoma, going 11-for-35 with three homers and 12 RBIs. He played in the outfield once but was used strictly as a designated hitter after that.

The 26-year-old is a former Golden Spikes Award winner as the best player in college baseball before being a first-round pick (No. 11 overall) in 2016. He has produced a batting line of .258/.343/.450 in three prior seasons with 22 home runs and 52 RBIs in 112 games.

Souza, 33, was 3-for-19 with an RBI and eight strikeouts in six games with the Mariners this season. He hit a career-high 30 homers in 2017 with the Tampa Bay Rays, but has only seven in 106 games since while playing for four different teams — the Arizona Diamondbacks (2018), Chicago Cubs (2020), Los Angeles Dodgers (2021) and Mariners.

Souza broke into the majors with the Washington Nationals in 2014 and played three seasons with the Rays.

Sampson, 30, had not yet appeared in a game for Seattle this season after being claimed off waivers from the Cubs earlier this month. He appeared in just one game with Chicago in 2022, allowing two unearned runs in one inning. He is 7-14 with a 5.13 ERA in parts of five big league seasons with the Mariners (2016, 2022), Texas Rangers (2018-19) and Cubs (2021-22).

Lynx rally late to defeat Liberty

Aerial Powers scored 18 points and the Minnesota Lynx rallied from an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit to stop the New York Liberty 84-78 in Minneapolis on Tuesday night.

Powers made just 3 of 13 shots, but the final one was a 13-footer with 1:03 left that gave Minnesota (2-6) an 80-77 lead. Kayla McBride, who added 15 points, converted four free throws in the final 15.9 seconds to seal the outcome.

Sylvia Fowles contributed 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Moriah Jefferson finished with 12 points. The Lynx canned just 37.1 percent of their field goal tries, but they were 27 of 33 at the foul line. Powers and McBride combined to make 19 of 22 free throws.

Natasha Howard scored a game-high 23 points for New York (1-5) and Rebecca Allen added 21. Han Xu came off the bench to tally 11 and Sabrina Ionescu chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

The Liberty weren’t able to hang on to a 71-63 lead in the final eight minutes, enduring a four-minute scoring drought that helped launch Minnesota’s comeback. They also made just 9 of 32 3-pointers and lost the rebounding battle 45-39.

New York’s second-leading scorer, Betnijah Laney, sat out with a knee injury.

In a matchup of struggling teams looking for something positive to happen, Minnesota came out smoking in the first quarter. It scored on seven of its first eight possessions and rolled up a 34-23 lead.

But the Lynx experienced a predictable regression to the mean that allowed New York to whittle a 12-point deficit down to one possession. Howard’s putback capped a 17-point half and brought the Liberty within 45-42 at the break.

After Minnesota boosted its lead to 56-48 midway through the third quarter, on McBride’s 3-pointer, New York rattled off a 10-2 run to even the score. Then it grabbed its first lead on Allen’s 3-pointer at the 1:45 mark and took a 65-63 edge to the fourth period.

Braves slip past Phillies in bottom of ninth

William Contreras singled home the winning run as the Atlanta Braves scored twice in the ninth inning for a frenetic 6-5 walk-off victory against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

The Braves had watched a one-run lead vanish in the top of the ninth, falling behind 6-5, but they answered quickly against reliever Nick Nelson (1-1).

Atlanta’s Dansby Swanson led off with a double and went to third on a wild pitch. Swanson scored when Ronald Acuna’s sacrifice fly was misplayed into a two-base error by center fielder Roman Quinn. Acuna scored on Contreras’ liner to center.

The Braves earned their second walk-off win of the season and evened the four-game series at a game apiece.

The Phillies had taken the lead in the top of the ninth on Bryce Harper’s 438-foot, two-run homer off Atlanta closer Kenley Jansen. It was Harper’s 10th homer of the season and 38th of his career against the Braves — his highest total against any opponent.

Harper finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

Jansen (3-0) blew the save but got the win. Ozzie Albies went 3-for-3 with two runs for the Braves.

Neither starter received a decision. Atlanta’s Max Fried worked six innings and allowed two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Philadelphia’s Kyle Gibson pitched five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.

The Phillies scored a run in the second. Jean Segura, who has hit safely in 18 of 19 starts this month, singled, went to third on Kyle Schwarber’s base hit and scored on J.T. Realmuto’s sacrifice fly.

The Braves answered with two runs in the bottom of the second. Dansby Swanson and Acuna capped Atlanta’s four-hit frame with RBI singles.

The Phillies tied the game 2-2 on back-to-back doubles by Alec Bohm and Harper. Philadelphia loaded the bases, prompting Atlanta manager Brian Snitker to make a mound visit. However, rather than going to the bullpen, Snitker left Fried in to face Realmuto, who struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Braves took a 4-2 lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Olson hit his fifth home run, and first since May 14, off the right field foul pole. Acuna added a sacrifice fly.

Philadelphia answered with a run in the seventh on Harper’s line-drive single.

Candace Parker leads Sky past Fever in second-half flurry

Candace Parker had 16 points and Azura Stevens scored 15 off the bench as the Chicago Sky erased a seven-point halftime hole to beat the visiting Indiana Fever 95-90 on Tuesday night.

Parker also recorded seven assists and six rebounds, while Courtney Vandersloot added 14 points for the Sky (4-2), who scored 53 second-half points and went 27-for-35 from the free-throw line on a night their 2021 WNBA championship banner was raised.

Allie Quigley and Kahleah Copper each scored 12 for Chicago, which won its seventh straight over Indiana (2-7).

Kelsey Mitchell posted 15 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter, Victoria Vivians had 17 points and seven rebounds and rookie Emily Engstler finished with 11 and 13 rebounds for the Fever, who have lost five in a row.

Chicago scored nine of the first 11 points in the third quarter, and outscored the Fever 28-16 for the period. Stevens had seven points in the third, and the Sky led 70-65 after three, but Indiana used a 7-0 run, highlighted by Mitchell’s traditional three-point play with 7:53 to play in regulation, to lead 77-74.

Down 81-80 after another Mitchell bucket, Parker, however, completed scored with 5:07 left and gave Chicago the lead for good.

Indiana trailed by as many as nine in the first quarter, but outscored the hosts 27-14 in the second, thanks to 10 points in the period from Vivians. The Fever took their first lead of the night at 37-35 on Engstler’s 3 with five minutes left in the period.

Chicago eventually went ahead 40-39, but a Vivians’ 3 followed, igniting a first-half-closing 10-2 run that put Indiana ahead 49-42 at the break.

Chicago used a 9-0 run for an 11-2 lead. However, Indiana overcame a 1-for-8 shooting start to string together an 11-2 spurt and tie the game at 13. But, 3-pointers from Dana Evans (10 points) and Stevens helped the Sky score seven of the final nine points to take a six-point lead into the second period.

Indiana played a fourth consecutive game without rookie NaLyssa Smith (13.0 points per game, 10.0 rebounds per game), due to an ankle injury.

Mookie Betts powers Walker Buehler, Dodgers past Nationals

Mookie Betts hit two home runs and Walker Buehler tossed six strong innings to power the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 9-4 victory over the host Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

Trailing 3-2 entering the second inning, the Dodgers took the lead for good when Betts belted a three-run home run to left after Chris Taylor led off with a single and advanced to second on a walk to Gavin Lux.

The Dodgers pushed their lead to 7-3 in the third inning when Taylor blasted a two-run homer to right-center field after Justin Turner was hit by a pitch.

Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (4-4) allowed seven runs on five hits, including three homers, with five strikeouts and three walks in three innings.

Betts, who finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs and a walk, smacked his second homer of the game — a 360-foot solo shot to left off reliever Victor Arano — in the fourth inning to make it 8-3.

Buehler (6-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits to go along with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Max Muncy drew a bases-loaded walk off Josh Rogers to push the lead to 9-3 in the sixth before Nelson Cruz’s run-scoring single in the seventh cut it to 9-4.

After the Dodgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat on Trea Turner’s two-run home run to center, the Nationals took the lead in the bottom of the frame.

Cesar Hernandez led off with a single, advanced to third on Keibert Ruiz’s double and scored on Juan Soto’s groundout. The Nationals tied the game when Ruiz scored on Cruz’s infield single.

Cruz, who finished 3-for-5, gave Washington a 3-2 lead shortly thereafter when he scored on Taylor’s throwing error following Josh Bell’s single.

Mystics shut out Rhyne Howard, demolish Dream

The Mystics held the WNBA’s No. 1 draft pick Rhyne Howard, the league’s leading scorer entering Tuesday, without a point and Washington star Elena Delle Donne reached 4,000 career points in a 70-50 win over the visiting Atlanta Dream.

Washington coach Mike Thibault missed the game due to personal (non-COVID) reasons, according to a statement from the team. Associate head coach Eric Thibault, his son, coached the game.

Howard, who entered the game averaging 20.5 points a game, missed all nine of her field-goal attempts, including an 0-for-4 performance from 3-point range, in 29 minutes.

Delle Donne, in her ninth WNBA season, has 4,000 career points after finishing with 15 against the Dream. She is the 40th player in WNBA history to reach that plateau and the second fastest, getting there in 199 games.

Washington (6-2) has won three of its past four games, including two wins over Atlanta. The Mystics beat the Dream 78-73 on Friday at Atlanta.

Kennedy Burke scored 13 points off the bench for Washington, which recorded 19 assists on 26 made field goals. Alysha Clark added 11 points and Ariel Atkins had 10. Natasha Cloud finished with seven assists.

Atlanta (4-3) did not have a player score in double figures until Aari McDonald made two free throws with 43.3 seconds remaining in the game. She finished with 10 points.

Erica Wheeler had nine points, but she also committed seven of the Dream’s 23 turnovers.

Washington led 34-25 at halftime after holding Howard to 0-for-6 shooting from the field, including all four of her tries from 3-point range.

After Atlanta rallied with a 13-2 run to take a 23-21 lead with 4:28 remaining in the second quarter, Washington allowed the Dream to make only one more shot from the field until halftime.

The Mystics closed the half with their own 13-2 run.

The Dream cut the deficit to 41-31 with 5:40 remaining in the third quarter, but Washington responded with another 13-2 run to complete the period.

Delle Donne’s pull-up jumper with 7:13 left gave her the point milestone while building the lead to 61-37.

Yankees sock four homers, edge Orioles in 11 innings

Jose Trevino drove in the winning run with an 11th-inning single, lifting the New York Yankees to a 7-6 win against the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.

Trevino went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, Gleyber Torres homered twice and Anthony Rizzo also went deep for the Yankees, who ended a season-high three-game losing streak.

New York left-hander Jordan Montgomery threw six-plus innings, allowing two runs and four hits. He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter but is still looking for his first win this season after nine starts.

Yankees reliever Clarke Schmidt (3-2) pitched a scoreless 10th before giving up a run in the 11th on back-to-back groundouts.

Baltimore’s Rougned Odor drove in four runs, including three on a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning. Austin Hays also homered, and starter Bruce Zimmermann allowed four runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out five without issuing a walk.

New York’s Isiah Kiner-Falefa tied the score 6-6 with a one-out RBI single off Bryan Baker (1-2) in the 11th. Marwin Gonzalez followed with another single before Trevino hit a ball sharply down the left-field line to score the winning run.

Rizzo hit a two-strike fastball into the second deck for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Trevino went deep with one out in the third to make it 2-0.

Torres hit the third two-strike solo homer of the game off Zimmermann with two outs in the fourth to make it 3-0.

Odor drove in a run with a fifth-inning groundout to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Montgomery started the seventh inning and surrendered a leadoff homer to Hays to cut the deficit to 3-2, ending the lefty’s night.

Michael King entered and gave up a one-out single to Adley Rutschman and a walk to Ramon Urias before Odor hit a line-drive three-run homer to right for a 5-3 lead.

Torres went deep for the second time in the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh to cut the gap to 5-4 and end Zimmermann’s night.

Logan Gillaspie entered and got the second out of the inning, but then he allowed a single, a hit batter and an RBI single by Trevino to tie the score 5-5.

Marina Mabrey scores 20 as Wings rally past Sun

Marina Mabrey knocked down a huge 3-pointer late on a night when she scored 20 points, and she carried the Dallas Wings to an 85-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday in Uncasville, Conn.

Mabrey’s corner trey in front of the Dallas bench with 3:05 remaining extended the lead to 79-72 for the Wings (5-2), who have won three consecutive games and improved to 4-0 on the road.

Mabrey was one of three double-figure scorers for Dallas, which trailed 39-27 at the half but battled back to survive a game that featured 11 lead changes and six ties. She produced her third 20-point game of the season.

Allisha Gray scored 17 and grabbed eight rebounds for the Wings, and Arike Ogunbowale poured in 16 points. Isabelle Harrison added nine points, all of which came in the final quarter.

The Sun (4-2) saw their four-game winning streak end despite getting 13 points apiece from Alyssa Thomas, Jonquel Jones and Brionna Jones. Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman each scored 11. Jonquel Jones pulled down 12 rebounds, and Thomas had nine assists.

Dallas took the lead for good with 6:56 left in the game on a 3-pointer by Tyasha Harris.

The Wings started building momentum in the third behind an 18-8 run that was highlighted by Mabrey’s 3-pointer with 2:20 left that put Dallas ahead 53-51.

Brionna Jones’ layup in the final seconds of the period put the Sun up 59-58 heading to the fourth.

The Sun were playing without captain Jasmine Thomas, who tore her right anterior cruciate ligament on Sunday against the Indiana Fever and is out for the year. She averaged 6.6 points per game this season.

Even without her, the Sun looked sharp early, leading by as many as 13 in the first half.

Making her first start of the year, Hiedeman nailed her second 3-pointer with 2:10 to go in the half, giving Connecticut a 33-20 cushion.

The Tuesday game was the first of three in a row at home for the Sun, who will oppose the Wings again on Thursday.

Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg pitches in minor league assignment

Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg pitched in a professional baseball game on Tuesday, taking the mound in a rehab assignment for low-Class A Fredericksburg.

Strasburg lasted 2 2/3 innings in his first competitive game this season, allowing three hits, four walks and three earned runs while striking out three. He threw a total of 61 pitches, 31 of which were strikes, against the Salem Red Sox.

A three-time All-Star and three-time top 10 finisher in Cy Young voting, Strasburg has pitched in a total of seven major league games since the Nationals won the World Series in 2019. Strasburg was the MVP of that series, winning two games and allowing just four runs while striking out 14. He then signed a seven-year, $245 million deal, but has pitched 26 2/3 major league innings since.

The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft is working his way back from surgery last summer for thoracic outlet syndrome. In August 2020, he also underwent surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Sunday that the plan for Strasburg and fellow starting pitcher Joe Ross is to log four innings of work and at least 60 pitches each. Ross — who is on the 60-day injured list after having a bone spur removed from his throwing elbow — took the mound Tuesday in Double-A ball for the Harrisburg Senators.

Strasburg, 33, is 113-61 in his major league career with a 3.21 ERA and 1,718 strikeouts in nearly 1,500 innings.
