Government to pass New Coronavirus Bill With $600 stimulus checks and $300 enhanced federal unemployment benefits

0

Congress is scheduled to vote on an almost 1 trillion dollar new coronavirus bill on Monday, December 21. This bill has been much awaited as the earlier stimulus package is about to lapse. It is a small step forward and many lawmakers agree that the nation and many Americans need much more help.

Senator Chuck Schumer said, “Our economy is in a deep, deep, deep hole. A lot more needs to be done.”

Some of the major provisions of the stimulus bill are as follows:

Unemployment insurance

Those under jobless benefits through Pandemic Unemployment Assistance get payments for 11 additional weeks through March 14, 2021. Enhanced federal job benefits of $300 per week will be given, as a stimulus check, which is half of the $600 one received under the CARES act.

Small business loans

Paycheck Protection Program loans have been sanctioned up to $248 billion. Many new businesses, who can avail these benefits, have been added.

Stimulus checks

The bill gives $600 stimulus checks to individual tax payers with an income under $75,000 per year and their dependents.

Rental relief

The bill offers $25 billion as relief to be used for future   or back rent owed as well as future or back utilities. The eviction moratorium across the nation will extend through January 31, 2021.

Food assistance

It will give $13 billion to increase Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding.

Some of the important requirements that were left out of the bill include the following:

  • No aid provided for state and local governments
  • No liability protection given for businesses
  • No check assistance for adult dependents
  • No hazard pay for essential workers

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro bizarre comments on Covid-19 Vaccines: People could turn into Crocodiles, Superhuman or Bearded Women

0

Jair Bolsonaro, President of Brazil, one of the nations to be hit very hard by coronavirus, has been against vaccines all the time. However, on Thursday his comments reached a height of absurdity.

He said, “In the Pfizer contract, it’s very clear. ‘We’re not responsible for any side effects.’ If you turn into a crocodile that’s your problem.”

He added, “If you become superhuman, if a woman starts to grow a beard or if a man starts to speak with an effeminate voice, they [Pfizer] won’t have anything to do with it.”

The Brazilian President launched the rollout of the vaccine on Wednesday. However, he refused to get vaccinated.

He told AFP, “Some people say I am giving a bad example. But to the imbeciles, to the idiots that say this, I tell them I’ve already caught the virus. I have antibodies, so why get vaccinated?”

The Supreme Court in Brazil had said that the vaccine would be obligatory, on Thursday. Brazilians could choose to get inoculated.

Bolsonaro had been a denier of the coronavirus despite Brazil having the second highest coronavirus death toll in the world and earlier called it a “little flu.” He tested positive in July and recovered but still is not facing up to the immense impact of the pandemic in his country.

Last week the President said that Brazil was in “the tail end of the pandemic,” despite a recent surge. On Wednesday a new high of over 700,000 positive cases were recorded. On Thursday there were over 1,000 fatalities within 24 hours.

Both Republicans and Democrats Compromise to Reach COVID-19 Stimulus Package

0

Late Saturday night, senior lawmakers finally agreed to a compromise over the Federal Reserve’s emergency lending powers. After months of talks and negotiations they finally overcame the last barrier that stood in the way of reaching a $900 billion coronavirus relief package.

According to multiple sources both the sides are working on compromise language and open items will be resolved overnight.

The deal is not as yet released but the expectations are as follows:

  • $600 direct payments for qualifying Americans
  • $300 weekly federal unemployment insurance bonus
  • Money for businesses to pay workers and rent
  • Funds for vaccine distribution

Warring representatives from both the Democrats and Republicans claimed that their objectives were achieved. This was mainly due to a group of House members and moderate senators who formed a “Problem Solvers Caucus” and quietly but steadily worked out an agreement acceptable to all.

Chuck Schumer, Minority Leader, D-N.Y., told the Capitol Hill pool on Saturday, “We’re getting close, very close. Very close,”

He added that it “looks like we’ll be able to” pass the stimulus package bill in both chambers “if things continue on this path, and nothing gets in the way.”

The caucus had worked out a   $748 billion proposal which base for negotiations between all the concerned parties including Mitch McConnell, Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the Trump administration and a few others.

Livestream Shopping Comes to US as Walmart-TikTok Launch New Social Partnership

Retail giant Walmart and TikTok have joined hands to offer customers live shopping and shopping friendly experiences.

On Friday, a livestreaming event for one hour will enable customers to shop for fashion items in Walmart and TikTok. Shoppers can do all the shopping they need during the event, and after the event without exiting the app.

This shoppable livestream experience is one among the several initiatives adopted by Walmart during the pandemic. Typically, these are events where a host presents each product   with descriptions and other details, helping customers make purchase decisions.

“It gives us a new way to engage with users and reach potential new customers, while bringing our own brand of fun – with the help of fashion-loving TikTok creators – to the platform,” Chief Marketing Officer of Walmart, William White, stated.

TikTok’s entry into the field of e-commerce has been under test since a year, when it added some new features for testing the app for a social commerce rollout. Retailer Levi’s had also used TikTok’s “Shop Now” button for sending users to     merchandise links on its site.

“If you’re watching a TikTok video and somebody’s got a piece of apparel or an item on it that you really like, what if you could just quickly purchase that item?” CEO of Walmart, Doug McMillon revealed to CNBC, a couple of months ago. “That’s what we’re seeing happen in countries around the world. And it’s intriguing to us, and we would like to be part of it.”

Infected Corona Virus Victim Dies on United Airlines Flight from Orlando to Los Angeles

Orlando flight passengers, crew at high risk as man aboard succumbs to coronavirus

On Monday, United Airlines faced accusations from angry commuters traveling to Los Angeles from Orlando. They condemned the carrier company for allowing a man aboard, who allegedly showed positive symptoms of COVID-19 and who died before the flight reached its destination.

As soon as the Boeing 737-900 was airborne, the man’s wife observed that he was having breathing difficulties. The medical team on the flight attempted to help him with first aid and then tried to revive him through CPR. The flight made an emergency landing at New Orleans, dropped him off and continued to LA. He was declared dead at New Orleans.

The patient’s wife was heard telling the medics that he had been showing signs of COVID-19 for a week.

One passenger said, ‘He was shaking and sweating boarding the plane. He was clearly sick and then died midflight. We had an emergency landing in New Orleans, and we didn’t even switch planes afterwards.

“We all sat there for hours waiting while you guys cleaned up his blood and germs with wet wipes. Is this how you guys handle other people’s safety and health?”

Another irate passenger tweeted, “United, why did you never check our temperatures before boarding?”

“An entire plane had to watch him seize or have a heart attack.”

Charles Hobart, a spokesperson, said that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has requested the airlines for the flight’s passenger list to inform others traveling that they could have been exposed to COVID-19.

China Inching Towards Herd Immunity, 1 million doses administered

0

Research indicates that Wuhan, in China, was the epicenter of the coronavirus which has become a pandemic reaching all corners of the world. However, China has also managed to control the virus with more efficacy, with its strict rules. The country authorized emergency use of its indigenously developed vaccines from major Chinese Pharma Sinovac Biotech Ltd. and China National Biotec Group Co. (CNBG), which is state owned.

China is expanding the reach of its vaccine to include workers in hospitals, public transport, cold-chain facilities and customs. Medically vulnerable groups and those with pre-existing conditions are poised to receive the vaccines in the current rollout.

A later phase and the final recipients of the vaccines will be the general public. With winter approaching, China is ensuring that its previous measures including vigilant border control as well as mass testing are fortified with mass inoculations.

Zeng Yixin, China’s National Health Commission’s vice minister said, “Our goal is to establish herd immunity through inoculations so that Covid-19 can be effectively controlled rapidly.”

One million doses have been administered to date. According to media reports, Yang Xiaoming recently announced that over 650,000 people had received Chinese vaccines. These vaccines are also two dose ones such as the vaccines developed by Pfizer & BioNTech and Moderna. The Chinese vaccine is said to have an 86% efficacy rate.

China’s CDC has said that it will monitor the vaccines safety and side-effects as the country gears up mass immunization to achieve herd immunity.

Viewer dilemma circles minds as The Mandalorian season ends

The second season of the space series The Mandalorian has been one of surprises. The nail-biting joy ride across the Star Wars world, the locations that one could recognize, the comeback of a badass, and the cameo of a previous hero was all rolled up into this impactful season, taking viewers to newer heights of the space experience.

This Star Wars franchise season has raised some queries. The closing scene where Grogu is wandering around, behaving like a baby, cuddling against Luke and finally taken away with R2-D2 makes audiences wonder if both Grogu and Mando have been separated forever.

Viewers are also wandering whether it is written in Grogu’s fate that Ben Solo will take his life. They wonder what would possibly happen to Mando as he had begun drifting away from the Mandalorian rules. Would the fact that Din Djarin had revealed himself out of his helmet mean that we will probably be seeing him in the next season as well? And of course, will there be a Season Three?

After the disappearance of Ahsoka, viewers had hoped to see her in the finale, but were disappointed and kept wondering what had happened to her. Similar feelings have surfaced for Greef Karga and Omera as well. Another germ of doubt has lodged in people’s minds is how Grogu got his name.

Ah, the family of frogs! Would people be able to see the frogs again? How on earth did Boba Fett stay alive and come out of the Sarlace pit is another dilemma. So is the mystery of the Darksaber. Will Bo-Katan wield it in Season 3?

Georgia Senate battles: 50-50 split seems likely

0

Georgia reported a turnout of 168,000 on Day 1 of its Senate run-off voting for Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossnoff of the Democratic Party and Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue from the Republicans side.

Reports say that additionally 314,000 people have hit the absentee ballots in this period of early voting.

These elections will add clarity on Georgia’s Chamber of Congress along with the destiny of President Biden’s governance agenda.

The turnout of the first day of early in-person election set a record, abrogating its earlier one of October as the early in-person election commenced for the general election in 2020. The voting numbers have seen a steady rise since the commencement of the ballot roll out.

Reports released by the Georgia Votes data say that over 1.1 million people voted in the Georgia runoffs for Jan. 5.

According to statistics from The U.S. Elections Project, those 24,000 who missed voting in the November election have also reached the runoff booths to cast their ballots.

The Jan. 5 runoff election is for choosing the party that will control America’s Senate. Currently, the Republicans have 50 out of 48 seats in the chamber. If Georgia makes the Democratic pair win in the runoffs, the Democrats will stand even with the Republicans in a 50-50 split. The tie will then be broken when Kamala Harris, the Vice President-elect casts her vote.

Millions of dollars are pouring into Georgia as the Republicans and Democrats are splurging.  Reports say that the Democrats need to win at the twin contests to prevent Republicans from forming a majority, as they may use it to have a significant say in Biden’s official nominees and legislative endeavours.

Biden and Trump have contributed their respective share of campaigning in Georgia as well.

American Federal Agencies and IT Companies Firewalls Breached: Hack Attacks by Country with Sophisticated Capabilities

On a Friday night interview on the Mark Levin Show, U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo said that Russia was behind a cyber-attack on several federal agencies. “I can’t say much more as we’re still unpacking precisely what it is, and I’m sure some of it will remain classified. “This was a very significant effort, and I think it’s the case that now we can say pretty clearly that it was the Russians that engaged in this activity.”

Earlier this month CEO Kevin Manda CEO of Firefly a US cyber security company, with major government clients, had revealed the hack on the company’s blog.

After breaching Solar Winds, a   Texan company providing remote information technology with huge clients worldwide and national corporations and federal agencies, the hackers gained greater access to a large number of agencies.

FBI’s cyber division confirmed “a high level of sophistication consistent with a nation state.”

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency put forth an emergency directive. Instructions were given to federal agencies to stop using a particular version of Solar Winds technology.

The cyberattack went unnoticed for almost the time it takes for a baby to be born but were discovered this month. Microsoft said that targets included government agencies, companies that contract for these agencies, think tanks and IT companies.

On Friday Homeland Security and Oversight Committee members spoke of being briefed but felt that they still had “more questions than answers.”
