iPhone 12 is the world’s best-selling 5G phone

Counterpoint Research published a report on Monday, December 21 and concluded that the iPhone 12 was the best-selling 5G phone in the month of October, worldwide, although it faced a delayed launch.

Despite being sold for only two weeks in October, it topped the monthly sales rankings. The sales were also high enough to make it the seventh best 5G phone sold between January and October this year.

The iPhone 12 Pro was not left far behind as it took the second spot in October. Both the phones’ combined sales managed to garner almost one fourth of the total sales of 5G phones in October.

Factors that contributed to the high sales include impatience in Apple fans, while waiting for the 5G upgrade in iOS. As soon as iPhones were launched, they sold in unprecedented numbers considering the short period of time. Strong carrier deals, bundled with these phones, also improved sales. Apple has also successfully marketed its products, including its iPhones in 140 countries, around the globe. This is a huge market base that increases worldwide sales.

Another positive result from iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro sales is that its mm Wave capable smartphones have made an impact in the market by increasing its penetration from 5% in September to 12% in October. This bodes well for the telecom industry and may push the tech giant into virtual reality VR and augmented reality AR.

Counterpoint predicts that sales would improve in the fourth quarter as holiday season approaches and sales may continue to gain momentum up to early 2021.

Important Updates: Senate Approves Coronavirus Relief Bill: Biden Receives Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine

0

Monday saw the occurrence of many important events: political as well as celestial. The winter solstice on Monday, December 21, the day with the longest night, brought some relief to struggling Americans as the long awaited $900 billion Corona Relief Package was finally passed late evening. On Monday, Treasury Secretary of the U.S., Steven Mnuchin said that several Americans would receive the $600 stimulus checks by next week.

Other significant developments include the following:

  1. The United States health authorities are huddled together looking for a way to deal with a new, virulent mutation of the coronavirus that has emerged this winter, in the UK. It spreads faster, at a rate of 70% above usual strains, and has caused panic worldwide. Europe has shut its borders with the UK. Asian and American countries have stopped flights to and from Britain.
  2. On Monday President-elect Joe Biden publicly received a shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine. On Tuesday top federal infectious diseases specialist Anthony S. Fauci and Alex Azar, Health and Human Services Secretary will receive the first dose.
  3. Holiday travel is in full swing despite warnings of the increased spread of the virus. This has been the busiest weekend during the pandemic.
  4. Turning Point USA, a conservative student group, allegedly violated local Covid-19 restrictions this weekend; by holding two large events in Florida. They disregarded requests by authorities’ and went ahead, holding one such event at President Trump’s private club – Mar-a-Lago.
  5. The coronavirus count is now at over 18 million cases and 318,000 fatalities since February, nationwide.

UK faces travel ban as world closes borders amid fear of new coronavirus mutation

0

On Monday, there was travel chaos and rumors of possible food shortages as   several countries closed their borders against Britain, fearing the spread a new strain of extremely infectious COVID-19.

After Prime Minister Johnson announced the possible presence of a mutated variant of the coronavirus, whose transmissibility is expected to be over 70%, Poland, Spain, India, Pakistan, Russia, Jordan, Switzerland, Sweden, and Hong Kong have closed their doors to all travelers from Britain. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman have totally shut their borders.

Despite reports from experts that the new strain may already be circulating in several countries, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Austria, Canada and Belgium blocked all travelers from the UK.

Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York, advised the American government to adopt prevention measures, as the country is already reeling from very high rates of cases and deaths due to the virus.

Truck drivers and the families of the working population have begun to reach home for Christmas, trying to navigate through the ban for people traveling from the UK. Sainsbury’s, the British supermarket chain stated that food shortages are likely to begin if the transport chain is not restored soon.

Financial markets have also been affected, with a slump in European shares, dip in travel and leisure stocks, 7% decrease in the British Airways’ IAG stock and a 3% downtrend in Air France KLM. Wall Street also tumbled as S&P 1500 airlines index fell by 3%, while leading cruise operators shares declined by almost 4%

America nails Lockerbie bombing culprit after three decades of global search

0

William Barr, the Attorney General of U.S., stated that after 32 long years of a global search for the offenders, Abu Agela Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi has been charged with bombing the passenger plane, Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988, using explosives that detonated midair near Lockerbie, Scotland; an act that killed 270, of which 190 were Americans.

In 2019, American federal authorities opened up the case with renewed zeal, following a review of lapsed cases of counterterrorism that may have fizzled out or weakened for unknown reasons. Mas’ud was interrogated by the Libyan authorities on the role he may have played in the aircraft bombing at Lockerbie. Post interrogation, they shared the report with prosecutors in the U.S.

The bombing has been termed as one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in UK’s history and the second deadliest one for the US.

“Let there be no mistake: No amount of time or distance will stop the United States, and its partners in Scotland, from pursuing justice in this case,” Barr said.

Mas’ud is in custody at Libya. Barr revealed that he wished to get permission from Libya to transport him to America for justice and prosecution.

The investigation on the Lockerbie bombing had been a challenging one for the FBI. It is said that forensic experts were able to trace a small bit of evidence, which they connected with a cassette player that was supposed to have held the bomb. The government of Libya accepted responsibility for their role in the crime.

Google Doodle Celebrates Two Great Natural Occurrences: The Winter Solstice and the Great Conjunction

0

Today Google doodle celebrates two important natural events, one being the annual Winter Solstice and the other being the great conjunction.

Google has made an attractive doodle to commemorate these events. Browsers will see Jupiter occupying one of the O’s in its iconic logo. Saturn, with its beautiful rings, will represent the other O.

Both the planets exchange a high-five. In these times of social distancing due to pandemic, it’s nice to see a high-five, albeit a virtual one.

The Winter Solstice falls on December 21, each year. It is the the shortest day and longest night of the year. It is also called Yule, Jol, Midwinter or the Longest Night.

The Great Conjunction is a rare event that occurs when two great celestial bodies come close to each other and pair. This year Jupiter and Saturn, the two largest planets in our Solar System will come so close to each other that they will look like a double planet. The last time an event where the planets were this close, was way back in 1226.

Google states: “Based on their orbits, from our vantage point on earth, Jupiter and Saturn will cross within .1 degrees of each other (a fraction of the width of the full moon).”

The next conjunction that will see the planets so close to each other will be in 2080.

Pfizer & BioNTech’s vaccine authorized for EU use by European Medicines Agency

Less than two weeks after it was approved for use in the U.S., Europe’s regulator, the European Medicines Agency authorized conditional approval of Pfizer and BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine.

Many countries in the EU including France, Germany, Italy and Austria aim to begin using the vaccine from December 27, after it is endorsed by the European Commission.

The European Medicines Agency released a statement saying that it had recommended conditional marketing authorization for the Pfizer vaccine to be used on people whose ages were 16 years or above.

The agency said, “EMA’s scientific opinion paves the way for the first marketing authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine in the EU by the European Commission, with all the safeguards, controls and obligations this entails.”

Lockdowns are tightening across the EU as a deadly coronavirus wave, exacerbated by winter, is sweeping across, as well as mutating to form more infectious strains. A new and highly transmissible mutation of the virus has been reported in the U.K. leading to flights and vehicular movement being banned from or to Britain.

The death toll across Europe is almost half a million. Governments are trying to strategize not only to prevent new infections and deaths but also to safeguard the economy as the virus has taken a huge physiological and economic toll across the world. With the holiday season around the corner, the infections and deaths are expected to rise much further.

Vaccine may not work on new Covid-19 variant seen in UK, US scientists examine variant

0

Reports of a new, mutated coronavirus variant making its rounds in some areas of the United Kingdom has raised doubts that the COVID-19 vaccine could be ineffective towards this strain. Scientists at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research are exploring the mutation and would be able to share some information in a few days.

The director of the Center for Infectious Diseases Research, Dr. Nelson Michael, has stated that the scientists are anticipating that the vaccine will prove to be effective against the variant. There are concerns regarding the efficacy of the vaccine if there is significant mutation of the variant.

“It stands to reason that this mutation isn’t a threat, but you never know. We still have to be diligent and continue to look,” Michael said.

As a primary step, the scientists are conducting a computer analysis of the genetic sequences of the new variant on Thursday.

“The computer analysis will allow us to gauge how much concern we should have,” Michael said. “Other teams around the world are doing this analysis, too.”

Reports say that if the analysis unveils a cause for concern, the next step would be carrying out studies on animals in a laboratory to record definitive results regarding the effect of the vaccine on the variant.

UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has proclaimed new lockdowns in some areas of the country that have been hit by the new mutation.

Apple Car Launch in 2021? Different Launch Dates by Different Analysts

The Apple Car remains enshrouded in secrecy in Cupertino. Although many believe that it will be launched in 2024 or 2025, new reports suggest that it could be launched as early as the end of 2021.

Executives, who work for local manufacturers in Taiwan, told the country’s Economic Daily News that the Apple Car will make an appearance, sometime during the third quarter next year. The tech giant has apparently reached out to local suppliers for manufacturing components during the second quarter of 2021.

Ming Chi Kuo, one of the most trusted Apple analysts, had indicated that the earliest an Apple car would launch would be no sooner than 2023. He also felt that it would take three to five years for mass production of these cars. There are reports that the company is currently negotiating with TSMC about a potential chip to power self-driving cars.

Fall 2021 is already a busy season for the tech giant with many scheduled releases including a September release of new generation iPhones and an October/November release of Apple Watches, iPads and MacBooks.

Apple authorities have made no comments or statements for or against any rumors of the car’s potential release. The chances of the company remaining silent about Project Titian (Apple Car) is to be expected till its official launch. However, these rumors indicate that the project is still alive, and many are eagerly awaiting the launch of an Apple care.

Elon Musk Wonders If Conversion of Tesla’s Balance Sheet to Bitcoin Is “Even Possible”

Michael Saylor, of MicroStrategy Inc. offered to share his “playbook” and other secrets offline with Elon Musk when the Tesla CEO had wondered, “Are such large transactions even possible?” with reference to converting Tesla’s balance sheet to Bitcoin. Saylor also suggested that joining the Bitcoin bandwagon would be good for Tesla shareholders.

Musk has never being eager on Bitcoin or cryptocurrency, despite its recent surges. This month Bitcoin crossed the $23,000 mark recently and some analysts have predicted that it could soar much higher and settle at about $30,000.Others are still skeptical.

Musk had joked about crypto currency Dogecoin on Sunday with a tweet on the Dogecoin started as a parody and its shares saw a 20% surge.

Earlier this month, during the initial surges of Bitcoin, Coinbase filed for an IPO. MicroStrategy had funded purchases of Bitcoin in December after raising $550 in debt. A Citibank analyst downgraded the Virginia-based firm, considering its CEO Saylor’s focus on the crypto currency “disproportionate” to its value.

Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase posted on Twitter that he was willing to help any company’s balance sheet hold crypto currency.

Other companies that have added or are adding crypto currency, as reserve assets, include PayPal Holdings Inc. and Square Inc, a company led by Jack Dorsey.
