MLB News: White Sox score six in sixth to swipe series from Dodgers

Colson Montgomery and Chase Meidroth belted two-run home runs to highlight a six-run sixth inning as the Chicago White Sox earned a 6-4 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon.

Erick Fedde (2-5) claimed the win by throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. He scattered three hits and two walks while striking out four. The White Sox won their fourth game in five tries and posted their first series win over the Dodgers since June 2014.

Emmet Sheehan (3-4) threw five shutout innings before being removed after failing to retire any of the three batters he faced in the sixth. He allowed three runs on four hits while striking out eight and walking one for the Dodgers, who dropped their first series since losing two of three against the Atlanta Braves May 8-10.

The Dodgers struck in the first inning against Chicago opener Bryan Hudson as Freddie Freeman connected on his 11th homer of the season to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

A day after being no-hit for eight innings by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the White Sox waited until the fourth inning to tally their first hit as Montgomery slashed a two-out double. Sheehan escaped his first jam, though, striking out Braden Montgomery to end the inning.

Chicago evened the score in the sixth on the second home run of rookie Sam Antonacci’s career — a 415-foot blast to right. After Miguel Vargas singled and stole second, the White Sox took the lead on Andrew Benintendi’s RBI double that chased Sheehan from the game.

Left-hander Jack Dreyer entered in relief, but the platoon advantage didn’t matter as left-handed Colson Montgomery cracked his 17th homer of the year to extend the Chicago lead to 4-1.

Braden Montgomery followed with a single and Meidroth tacked on a two-run homer to the opposite field to push the lead to 6-1.

The Dodgers started to rally against White Sox reliever Grant Taylor in the seventh. After a Dalton Rushing double and a wild pitch, Alex Freeland’s sacrifice fly cut the deficit to 6-2.

Mookie Betts connected on a solo home run off Taylor in the eighth to pull within three.

Seranthony Dominguez took over in the ninth for the White Sox. Ryan Ward walked and scored on Freeland’s one-out double. Shohei Ohtani walked to bring Andy Pages to the plate as the go-ahead run. Pages grounded into a fielder’s choice, then Dominguez struck out Freeman to secure his 12th save in 15 tries.
