Masyn Winn delivered the go-ahead home run in the seventh inning as the St. Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to nine games with a 3-2 road victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.
Ivan Herrera also homered for St. Louis, which has the longest winning streak in the majors this season. Lars Nootbaar chipped in a pair of hits for the Cardinals, who only had five hits as a team.
J.T. Realmuto had two hits and an RBI for Philadelphia, which had won five of its previous six games. Nick Castellanos and Alec Bohm also notched two hits for the Phillies.
Cardinals reliever Kyle Leahy (1-0) logged 2 1/3 scoreless frames, and Ryan Helsley slammed the door in the ninth for his eighth save. Winn’s homer was the first allowed by Matt Strahm (1-2) this season.
Yankees 11, Mariners 5
Trent Grisham homered twice and Austin Wells and Anthony Volpe also went deep as New York defeated host Seattle for its fifth win in six games.
The game was marred by a gruesome lower left leg injury sustained by Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera in the ninth inning. Cabrera was hurt sliding home to score the game’s final run and had to be taken off the field by an ambulance with his leg in an air cast.
Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt (1-1) allowed three runs on three hits over six-plus innings. Julio Rodriguez, Jorge Polanco and Cal Raleigh homered for the Mariners, who lost their fourth game in a row.
Guardians 5, Brewers 0
Gabriel Arias hit a three-run double in the fourth inning and Jose Ramirez scored twice and had three of Cleveland’s five stolen bases, lifting the Guardians to a victory over visiting Milwaukee.
Ramirez moved into third place in franchise history with 255 career steals. Guardians starter Ben Lively exited after three innings because of right forearm inflammation. Jakob Junis (1-1) threw one scoreless inning in relief.
Brewers starter Freddy Peralta (4-3) allowed a season-high four runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Milwaukee stranded 11 baserunners while taking its fourth loss in five games.
Tigers 14, Red Sox 2
Trey Sweeney blasted a three-run homer as part of a nine-run third inning as host Detroit cruised to victory over Boston.
Gleyber Torres had three hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in three runs for the Tigers. Javier Baez had three hits and knocked in two runs, Riley Greene drove in two runs and Kerry Carpenter scored three times.
Jackson Jobe (3-0) held the Red Sox to one run on three hits, walking five and striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings. Wilyer Abreu and Abraham Toro homered for Boston. Tanner Houck (0-3) was charged with 11 runs and nine hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Royals 7, Astros 5
Michael Massey homered to ignite a four-run second inning in support of Michael Wacha, who carried a shutout into the seventh inning of Kansas City’s win at Houston.
Jonathan India led the Royals with three hits, while Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino and Kyle Isbel had two hits apiece. Wacha (3-4) wound up yielding two runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Jeremy Pena, Jose Altuve, Yainer Diaz and Jake Meyers each collected two hits for the Astros, who had won three of their previous four games. Ryan Gusto (3-2) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Diamondbacks 2, Giants 1
Corbin Carroll hit a pair of solo homers and Merrill Kelly tossed seven strong innings as visiting Arizona opened a three-game series against San Francisco with a win.
Kelly (4-2) allowed one run on eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Shelby Miller tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save. Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks, who have alternated losses and wins over the past 10 games.
Heliot Ramos had three hits for the Giants, who lost their fourth straight game. Justin Verlander (0-3) gave up two runs on nine hits over six-plus innings.
Braves 4, Nationals 3
Alex Verdugo hit a one-out single in the ninth inning to help host Atlanta walk off Washington in the opener of a four-game set.
Marcell Ozuna had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for the Braves, who notched their major-league-leading fourth walk-off win of 2025. Reliever Raisel Iglesias (3-3) gave up two unearned runs in the ninth on a throwing error by shortstop Nick Allen but was credited with the win.
James Wood hit a solo shot for the Nationals, who also received a pair of hits from both Keibert Ruiz and Luis Garcia. Jackson Rutledge (1-1) gave up the decisive run.
Mets 4, Pirates 3
Pete Alonso hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to lead New York over Pittsburgh in the opener of a three-game series.
Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos each had two hits for the Mets. David Peterson pitched six innings and gave up two runs. After blowing the save in the ninth, Huascar Brazoban (2-0) recorded the win.
Pirates shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa had two hits, including a home run to open the scoring in the second inning. Ke’Bryan Hayes also had a pair of hits and an RBI in the loss. Paul Skenes pitched six innings of one-run ball. David Bednar (0-4) took the loss.
Rangers 2, Rockies 1
Wyatt Langford’s two-run home run in the sixth inning backed the solid pitching of Tyler Mahle and the Texas bullpen as the Rangers held on for a win over Colorado in Arlington, Texas.
Mahle (4-1) pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits. Rangers closer Luke Jackson exited after a ninth-inning comebacker struck his right (pitching) hand. Jacob Webb got the final three outs for his first save of the year.
The game was the first for Colorado manager Warren Schaeffer, who was promoted from third base coach after the firing of Bud Black on Sunday. The Rockies lost for the ninth time in 10 games.
Cubs 5, Marlins 2
Dansby Swanson and Seiya Suzuki each hit two-run homers to highlight a five-run fifth inning as Chicago beat visiting Miami in the opener of a three-game series.
Miguel Amaya went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run, Swanson finished with two hits and Kyle Tucker had an RBI triple for the Cubs, who extended their franchise record by winning their seventh straight home series opener to begin a season. Colin Rea (3-0) allowed two runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Derek Hill homered for the Marlins, who took their second straight loss. Cal Quantrill (2-4) gave up three runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Angels 9, Padres 5
Taylor Ward’s ninth-inning grand slam capped a six-run rally that led visiting Los Angeles to a win over San Diego.
Ward pulled a 2-2 sweeper from Alek Jacob down the left field line for his ninth homer of the year, pinning the loss on closer Robert Suarez (0-1). Brock Burke (4-0) got the win despite allowing an eighth-inning run. Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi gave up seven hits and four runs, two earned, in six innings.
Fernando Tatis Jr. homered and Jackson Merrill had three hits and scored twice for the Padres.
