Rookie Ryan Waldschmidt had two hits and three RBIs in his second major league start, Eduardo Rodriguez did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Mets 5-1 in the rubber game of a three-game series Sunday in Phoenix.

Waldschmidt doubled in two runs in the second and singled in a run in a three-run sixth capped by Ketel Marte’s two-run triple as the D-backs won their first series in the last six.

Rodriguez (4-0) gave up one run and four hits in 8 1/3 innings, leaving two outs short of his first career complete game after Mark Vientos’ one-out single in the ninth.

Rodriguez struck out four and walked three. The D-backs have not had a complete game since Zac Gallen beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 on Sept. 8, 2023.

The Mets did not have a hit until Carson Benge’s jam-shot single to center with one out in the sixth. Luis Torrens followed with a double for the Mets’ only run.

Torrens had two hits for the Mets, who had 12 hits in the three-game series and fell to 15-25. They had won four of six games and were looking for their third straight series win in the finale of a nine-game road trip.

Rodriguez has given up one run and six hits across his last two starts. He gave up two hits in seven innings in a 9-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Rodriguez retired the first nine he faced on 27 pitches before walking Juan Soto to open the fourth inning. Austin Slater grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Rodriguez cruised through a six-pitch fifth before Benge broke up the no-hitter on a looping single to center with one out in the sixth. Torrens lined the next pitch into the right field corner to make it 2-1.

Mets opener Huascar Brazoban (2-1) walked Ildemaro Vargas and Nolan Arenado to open the second, and Tobias Myers entered and got two outs before Waldschmidt doubled to deep left-center to drive in two.

Third baseman Andy Ibanez’s second throwing error of the game set up the D-backs’ three-run sixth off bulk reliever David Peterson. Jorge Barrosa’s two-out single brought up Waldschmidt, and Marte lined a triple off the right field fence to bring in the final two.

Peterson gave up four hits and three runs (none earned) in five innings. He struck out three without a walk.
