Christian Yelich’s seventh-inning RBI double highlighted a 3-for-5 day, and Jacob Misiorowski struck out 11 without a walk as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the host St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 in the first of two games Tuesday.
Yelich doubled twice and drove in a pair as the Brewers posted a late rally for the second straight game and have now won seven of their last nine. Joey Ortiz went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Garrett Mitchell (2-for-4) and Jake Bauers (2-for-3) provided the rest of the offense.
Misiorowski (10-4) gave up a two-run home run to Jordan Walker in the first inning, but the All-Star hurler — who it was announced will not participate in the All-Star Game due to being scheduled to pitch on Sunday — held the Cardinals to three runs and three hits across seven innings.
Walker got his 21st homer by turning on a 95-mph cutter from Misiorowski. Ivan Herrera also homered for the Cardinals.
Bruce Zimmermann, whom the Cardinals called up earlier Tuesday, threw five innings after opener Matt Svanson held the Brewers scoreless in the first. Zimmermann, who appeared in one game for Milwaukee last season, gave up three runs on six hits and a walk. He struck out a pair.
Ortiz’s RBI double and a Yelich single in the third inning allowed the Brewers to tie the game at 2, but Herrera responded in the next half-inning with his 11th homer to put the Cardinals back ahead by one.
Misiorowski then set down the last 14 batters he faced.
Mitchell’s single up the middle in the sixth tied the game as Bauers beat Nathan Church’s throw from center field.
Ryne Stanek (2-2) came on in the seventh for St. Louis. Cooper Pratt worked a leadoff walk, and Ortiz beat out a bunt for a hit. Stanek left after jamming his foot into the bag while trying to cover.
JoJo Romero faced Yelich, who went opposite field on a 1-2 pitch and lined a double down the left field line, giving the Brewers their first lead of the game.
The Cardinals had runners on the corners with two outs in the eighth against Aaron Ashby, but Alec Burleson grounded out to end the threat.
Abner Uribe allowed a walk in the ninth but still earned his sixth save of the season.
