After the beating, of Tyre Nichols, a Memphis police officer allegedly texted at least five people with a picture of Tyre using his personal cell phone.
The Memphis Police Department said in a document obtained by The New York Times and made public on Tuesday that a Memphis police officer snapped a photo of Nichols after the beating while he was restrained in handcuffs and leaning against a police cruiser. At least five people reportedly received the photo.
According to the Times, Demetrius Haley acknowledged to sending a picture to at least five persons, including two other officers, a Memphis police department employee who works in the civilian sector, and a woman acquaintance. This information was also contained in the records, which also said that a sixth person received the picture.
The publication claims that the Memphis Police Department has a regulation that forbids officers from using personal cell phones while performing patrol responsibilities, such as operating a police vehicle, answering service calls, or performing traffic stops. Haley allegedly used a personal phone, according to the records.
According to the publication, the request for “the regulatory agency to decertify five cops engaged in the beating” was made in the document and sent to the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission last month. The five policemen were dismissed and are now facing second-degree murder charges. Decertifying the officers would make the fired officers ineligible to work as police officers in the state of Tennessee.
Tadarrius Bean, Emmitt Martin III, Justin Smith, Desmond Mills Jr., and Haley are the five officers who have been criminally charged, and each of them either never activated their body-worn cameras or only recorded brief excerpts of their interaction with Nichols, which is against departmental rules.
Seven additional Memphis police officers may be disciplined. In relation to the killing of Nichols, thirteen officers might be disciplined, according to city attorney Jennifer Sink, who made the announcement at a city council hearing on Tuesday. By the end of the week, officers should receive notice of alleged departmental policy infractions. Hearings will take place the following week, and written conclusions will follow, according to Sink.
