LPGA News: Miyu Yamashita rolls to 9-shot win in Canada, ties LPGA scoring record

Miyu Yamashita tied an LPGA Tour scoring record as she sailed to a nine-shot victory at the CPKC Women’s Open on Sunday in Edmonton.

Yamashita was ahead by six shots after the third round and carded a 4-under-par 66 Sunday to finish at 23-under 257 for the week at Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Yuri Yoshida of Japan was a distant second at 14 under par after a 69.

Not only did the rising star from Japan collect her fourth LPGA victory in 13 months, her 257 tied the tour’s 72-hole record for the lowest gross score of all time.

She capped that with a triumphant birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole, closing a round of six birdies and two bogeys.

“I was nervous, nervous round, so my shot, my game, I trust my swing,” Yamashita, 25, said on the TV broadcast.

Yamashita broke through in August 2025 when she claimed her first major, the AIG Women’s Open, which doubled as her first win in an official LPGA Tour event. Before that, she racked up 13 titles on the LPGA of Japan Tour.

She opened the week with rounds of 62 and 64 to create plenty of space between her and the field.

Yoshida’s highlight was an eagle at the par-5 12th hole amid one birdie and two bogeys. She said she was looking forward to the schedule’s upcoming Asian Swing, which will see the LPGA play in China, South Korea, Malaysia and Japan across October and November.

“Hopefully, I can play Asian Swing, right, so I’m happy to play Asian Swing and I’m really excited to play next week, too,” she said.

Sei Young Kim of South Korea shot a 67 and placed third at 13 under.

The low Canadian was 17-year-old Anna Huang, whose final-round 65 boosted her into a tie for fourth at 12 under with Gina Ki (71) and China’s Ruoning Yin (68).

Huang, a native of Vancouver, has been a revelation on the Ladies European Tour, where she’s won four times since last September, most recently the PIF London Championship earlier this month.

“I think always like to make a cut at any LPGA event is really special,” Huang said. “And then to play so well as I did this week at the Canadian Open is just really, really awesome I guess. And, yeah, I’m really happy that I played well in front of the best in the world and, hopefully, I can continue doing that.”

Another rising star from Canada, 16-year-old amateur Aphrodite Deng, followed her Saturday 63 with a 69 and tied for seventh at 11 under with Laney Frye (68) and Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn (68).
