Logan Edwards scampered home on an error to break a scoreless tie and lead off a five-run, fifth-inning outburst, sending Henderson, Nev., to a 5-0 win over Tacoma, Wash., on Sunday morning at the Little League Baseball World Series in South Williamsport, Pa.
The first two batters of the fifth, Edwards and Michael Kleiner, reached base on bunt singles back to the pitcher, Kasen Workman. With James Esber at the plate, Edwards and Kleiner advanced on a wild pitch, and Edwards scored on an ensuing error on the play for the first run.
Esber singled to send Kleiner to third, and the latter scored on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Adrian Cruz. Staked to a 2-0 lead, the Nevada squad followed with four more singles to drive home three more runs.
Edwards scored the winning run and also closed out the game on the mound, taking over for Brooks McFarland, who allowed two hits, walked four and struck out five in five innings for Nevada (2-0). Washington (2-1) moved into the lower bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Iowa 6, New Jersey 0
Anthony Johnson Jr. rang up 15 strikeouts and collected one homer, two hits and four RBIs at the plate to power Davenport, Iowa, to a one-hitter against Bayonne, N.J.
Caleb Erwin went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Cooper Thissen had one hit, two walks and three runs for the Midwest representatives, who will face Nevada in the U.S. upper-bracket final on Wednesday. Johnson, whose three-run shot in the top of the sixth doubled Iowa’s advantage, pitched 5 2/3 of a possible six innings and got all but two of his outs via the strikeout.
Joey Dwyer had the only hit for New Jersey, which moves into the U.S. lower bracket and will face either Texas or Ohio on Tuesday.
Nicaragua 8, Mexico 4
Latin America region representative Nicaragua scored eight runs on four hits with the aid of nine walks and two hit batters, defeating Mexico to advance to the International upper-bracket final.
Mexico took advantage of three Nicaragua errors and built a 3-0 lead following the top of the fourth. In the bottom half of the inning, Nicaragua got one run back on two walks and an RBI single by Jose Martinez Padilla. But in the fifth, Nicaragua erupted for seven runs, keyed by two-run doubles from Moises Estrada Juarez and Kendry Arauz Roque.
Padilla also tossed 5 1/3 innings to guide the team from Leon, Nicaragua, to the victory. Gareth Garcia and Emiliano Kerber had RBIs for Mexico, which remains alive in the International lower bracket.
Curacao 1, South Korea 0
Giendry Ryan stole home in the first inning for the game’s only run, Juriensly De Windt combined with Ryan for 10 strikeouts without a walk in six shutout innings and Willemstad, Curacao, advanced to the International upper-bracket final with a shutout of Seoul, South Korea.
Ryan stole home while his teammate Jaymiell Martina was thrown out attempting to steal second. De Windt scattered three hits over four innings before Ryan took the mound for two perfect innings. As a result, Curacao will meet Nicaragua on Wednesday.
Ji Hwan Hong had a double among South Korea’s three hits, and he did the bulk of Seoul’s pitching with 4 2/3 innings of work. They remain alive in the lower bracket.
