Jury Deliberations to Resume Next Week in Johnny Depp-Amber Heard Celebrity Suit in Absence of Unanimous Verdict

The jury did not reach a unanimous verdict in the Depp-Heard celebrity defamation suit at the end of business Friday. Following the Memorial Day vacation, they will resume deliberations on Tuesday morning.

On Friday, the conclusion of closing arguments in Amber Heard’s defamation trial in the case brought against her by ex-husband Johnny Depp.

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million after she implied in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed that he assaulted her. Despite the fact that she did not name him, he maintains her charges affected his capacity to work. She is pursuing a $100 million counterclaim.

Depp’s attorneys contended that Heard was the abuser, not Depp. In the final argument, Depp’s lawyers requested the jurors to “give him his life back” after claiming Heard’s allegations of domestic abuse had “ruined” it.
They claimed Heard would sooner fight than let the actor leave, that her accusations were an act of terrible cruelty to actual survivors, and that she produced the best performance of her life on the stand.

Vasquez stated that Heard was either a “victim of genuinely awful torture” or “a woman willing to say absolutely anything.” She said there was no recording of Depp admitting to striking Heard. “There is no such thing. It did not occur.”

Continuing the story, Depp’s lawyer, Benjamin Chew, told jurors that here was the real Amber Heard, and she was “scary.” Heard’s lies, he claimed, had evolved over time.

Ben Rottenborn, Heard’s attorney, told jurors that if Depp cannot prove he never mistreated Heard, she would win the case. A decision against Amber would give the message that no matter what you do as an abuse victim, you must always do more. He stated that no matter how honest a person is about his or her own defects and shortcomings in a relationship, you need to show you are perfect to make people believe you. He requested the jury not send across such a message to people.

He urged them to look at text messages that had already been given to the court and had “the most vile, disgusting language that you could ever imagine”. He said the lines show the “heart and mind” of America’s favorite pirate. “This is the authentic Johnny Depp.”
